New computer, want to upload iPod

I recently got a new computer and lost my original iTunes library, but it's all on my iPod. Someone told me if I plug in my iPod it will automatically clear itself because of this. How can I get my music from my iPod onto this library?
video ipod 30gb   Windows XP

If your iPod is set to automatically update then you need to prevent it auto-syncing and erasing the music currently on it.
While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (On a Mac, hold ⌥ and ⌘). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.
Another way is to connect your iPod and before it starts to sync, click the little X on the right hand side of the display beside the "Do Not Disconnect" message. The display is the little window to the right of the iTunes control buttons: http://www.apple.com/support/ipod101/tunes/1/#1
Or you could look at the method described in this link "How to keep iTunes from automatically updating your iPod" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93779
Go with whichever method you feel most comfortable. If at any point you are asked if you want to link your iPod to a new library, click No.
After that, there are a number of third party utilities you can use to retrieve the files from your iPod.

  • Have a new computer want to sync ipod classic to itunes.

I already transfered files from old computer to new computer via Home Sharing and external hard drived the playlists. now I want to transfer ipod over to new computer. Old computer is gonna be wiped and given to kids. Any ideas how to do this I am lost.

    HI Stormsmom,
You need to set your iPod to "manually manage music" or else iTunes will delete your files in syncing it up.You can read this article for more info:

  • New Computer, want to upload songs onto new computer

I just bought a new I-MAC and want to get all of my music onto the new computer, but when I hookup my i-pod, it says I can only sync with one computer and I have already done this on another computer(it is a PC that has recently died). I have heard about "rippers" but there has to be an easier way to do this. I am sure I'm not the first one to encounter this, and I have looked for a way to fix this but haven't been able to find one...I am still learning the Mac operating system.
    Thanks for the help

Apple doesn't support the transferring of music from your iPod to your iTunes. Only iTunes to iPod. So to do this you will need to download a third party program that will help copy your music from your iPod back to your computer, or there are a couple manual methods you can check out.

Personally I was in the exact position you are, I used Senuti to take the music off my Pc formated iPod and put it on my new Mac. It was easy, worked perfect, took me about an hour to get it off and reload it all back to my iPod. Saved me a lot of time and headaches, Good Luck

  • New computer:  Can I upload new songs from my new computer to my old ipod without deleting the playlists that already exist??

I recently had to purchase a new computer due to my old one shooting sparks and almost setting fire to my furniture when I used it.  I can use it rarely to try to get my itunes loaded to transfer over, but it usually doesn't cooperate.  I now have a bunch of new songs on my new itunes from purchases and also uploading old cd's.  I want to be able to add these songs to my playlists I already have mostly because I use my ipod to work out and also, there are a large amount of songs from my old computer on playlists currently. Is there anyway to make new playlists from my new computer onto my old ipod??

You should be backing up regularly so you can transfer your library to the new computer.
    Otherwise, you can transfer purchases

For non-purchased content you will need to find a 3rd party app

  • New computer,  want keep ipod music from old computer to new?

new computer,  want keep ipod music from old computer to new?

    Hi mtscott41,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you have music on an iPod from your old computer. You now have a new computer but do not want to have the music from the iPod erased when you sync to the new computer. If the music on your iPod was purchased from iTunes you can either transfer those purchases from the iPod to your new computer’s iTunes Library or you can download the previously purchased content directly to your iTunes Library from iTunes. Please use the following article as reference for transferring purchases.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1848
The following article will show you how to download all of your previous purchases directly to iTunes if you would like to proceed this way.
    Download past purchases
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519
If the music on your iPod was not purchased from iTunes and you still have the old computer, you may want to use a process called Home Sharing to transfer that content to your new computer. The following article explains Home Sharing.

    I hope this helps,

  • I have new computer, want to update itunes on new computer?

I want to update itunes on new computer with my old iPod nano version 4.  How can I do this?

If you already have iTunes on your computer, then open it up.
Go to the menubar at the top of the screen, and select "Advanced"
In there, you will see the option "Check for Updates". Select that.

  • New Computer won't recongize iPod

Hi. My computer won't recognize my iPod. I just got a new Mac Mini, and iTunes keeps saying that "This iPod is in use by another computer" What can I do to fix this?

Austin - your new computer is recognizing your iPod and it is trying to keep you from doing something potentially hazardous to your music. An iPod can be synced with only one computer. Apple did this so the music labels wouldn't view the iPod as a huge copyright violation machine.
So when you connect your iPod to another computer iTunes tells you that the iPod is already being used by another computer. You dohave the option at that point to switch over syncing to the new computer. But it will erase the iPod's contents. Again, this keeps the iPod from being used to illegally transfer music from one computer to another. If you want to start using the iPod on your new computer, go ahead and indicate that you want to use the new computer. Just be aware that the iPod will be erased.
Of course your next question might be, "But how do I get my music onto the new computer? Can't I use my iPod to do this?" Yes, but it will require 3rd party software. Go to your favorite download site and search for 'iPod'.

  • My new computer wants to wipe out all the apps on my sons iphone and he has games on it that he has worked hard to get to high levels. If I allow my new computer to be the primary computer will I lose all his games or is there a way to sync without losing

My new computer wants to wipe out my sons apps on his iphone and he will lose all of his "progress" in the games he had loaded on already. Is there a way to save th info from all the apps and still designate the new computer as his new primary one?

Copy your ENTIRE iTunes FOLDER to an External Drive... and then from the External Drive to your New Computer..
Backup iTunes to an External Drive

An Added Bonus is that you will have a Backup of iTunes.

  • ITunes on my new computer wants to erase my iPhone music

iTunes on my new computer wants to erase my iPhone music when syncing and put that library on it. I have albums on my iPhone that aren't on my computer and I don't want them erased. Am I screwed?

Yes, I know. The problem is that my old computer died before I could back up a few albums that the original hard copies were stolen.
Like you said I can only use one. If I use the new one it says it will erase those albums from my phone that are not on my new computer's iTunes. Some of these albums are out of print now. I even have a few songs on an iTunes purchase that didn't go to my new iTunes via the cloud ( but are on my iPhone). I checked for available downloads and it says nothing is there.

  • My new computer wants to "fix" my ipod... should I be worried?

    Hi folks
I bought my iPod early 08 and uploaded my CD collection on it. Since then i have just bought a new computer (i went from XP to Vista), and when i plug my iPod in to charge it a message pops up asking me if i want to "fix" my ipod. I have a horrible feeling that this will delete my music ... i have not uploaded any iPod programs onto my new puter and am unsure what to do... Can anyone out there help? is it just a matter of downloading the ipod software from the apple site a second time or what?

    Hello.
I'm not gonna tell you I know everything about iTunes etc., but I think this is nothing to worry about.
Just install the iPod software again, take care you have an copy of your music files and when it's possible, just click the message away. When it itsn't, click 'OK', or when there is a 'CANCEL', click it. When it deletes your music - but that would seem strange to me- and you have a backup, it's easy to put it all on again.
I think it's just a risk but there's in my brain only a little option it will delete everything.
    Succes.

  • My hard drive is ready to die and i want to load my itunes to an external hard drive and then loan them back to my new computer. Will my ipod classic sync up to the new computer?

my hard drive is ready to die and want to move my itunes to an external hard then back to a new computer, will i have a problem syncing my ipod up to the new computer and in the process loosing all my music?

To be honest your post is rambling and difficult to read due to the lack of proper punctuation I only read it part way however...
The first thing to do is a proper backup. Your system has Time Machine built into it, here is the Time Machine Tutorial. Look that over, get yourself an external HD to use as a TM drive and backup properly! This will backup all of OS X however it will NOT backup MS Windows!
If you think your HD is failing then run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode and if it reports errors you can post them here.
