We know all the problems MBP CD had, we thought it will be fixed in C2D after using people as laboratory rats in first generation. Well, C2D is here, and problems too, all computer trademarks have problems, but apple is always telling us they are the best, but now, they have same configuration of normal pc´s and less Please, all users of MBP, C2D and CD, plug your computer, install coreduotemp, quit the battery, look the processor speed, you will see it at 1ghz. And with battery, notice the continously speed variation, normal in some energy configurations and in some temperatures, but not always.
Of course, we continue with noise problems and eEtcetera

That behavior is normal. Intel's chips use a technology called (I believe) "SpeedStep", which dynamically adjusts the processor speed as is needed. This improves battery life and has no impact on performance.
With respect to quitting the battery, I assume you mean to remove it... This will, in fact, freeze the processors at a max of 1GHz, which is a safety feature.

What type of wireless router w/new MBP C2D??

I have a new 17" C2D MBP on order and I would like to sort out my wireless home network before it arrives...
As I am new to the wireless world, I do not understand what wireless router would work for this new MBP. I have read about it having 802.11g technology, but I have also seen something about N technology... my local computer shop says that they don't have N technology yet, but will soon.
What is this all about? Is 802.11g G technology? What do I get to have wireless internet access with my new MBP at home?

If you have the MBP C2D and you would like to get a wireless router. I suggest that you get a 802.11n router, as it works for both 802.11b, 802.11g as well as 802.11n. It is common knowledge by now that the wireless card that is used in the MBP with the C2D is an Atheros AR5008 802.11n. Though it is recognized as an 802.11g in the current OSX 10.4, this wireless card has the possibility of being used at its native state of 802.11n. What does this mean to you? Well, the 802.11n is ~ 650% faster than 802.11g and has about 5X the range of it as well. Though 10.4 does not recognize the card as such, windows vista will (that is if you plan on installing it onto the system) and OSX 10.5 might (I don't if Apple, will support draft N [802.11n] of the new wireless standard, even though they put a wireless card in the system that is a Draft N card). So get a wireless router that uses 802.11n. It'll save you money in the future.
Ok, now I'm done explaining why you should get the 802.11n router. Now, as for those who might say otherwise. If you think the 802.11n draft standard is going to change much from now, until the standard is finalized, then you may or may not be right. But from what my professor explained to me about how the technology works, it probably won't change that much. If I were to explain it to anyone on this board about how the standard works, it would be a hopeless matter unless you have taken classes in state variables or control systems. But I guess there are more than enough resources online to find out about how the Draft N standard works. And that is my 2 cents.

Can't Remove Office 2004 Test Drive from new MBP C2D.

I received my new MBP C2D yesterday. I'm trying to remove Office 2004 Test Drive so I can install the full version. When I run the the Remove Office application it posts a log on the desktop that indicates that it located the Office 2004 Test Drive folder, but when I get to the Results page of the Remove Office application it does not show me the option to remove the folder. When I click continue it says: "You have not chosen to remove any Microsoft Office items." Has anyone else run into this problem? Is there any other way to remove the Test Drive? Please help!

I installed the office 2004 software, and at the end of the installation it will give you the option to uninstall the test drive software. Good luck.

New MBP C2D-SR 15" with old SMC Firmware?

I found this odd - just got a new MBP C2D SR 15" and checked the SMC version. It's 1.16f8 but the latest version is apparently 1.2f10 from last year.
As with a lot of other posters here, my machine seemed to be running hot and I wonder if this is related.
Should I update?

Anybody gonna cancel order for 17"MBP C2D if shipping gets delayed again?

Just wondering if anybody else will want to cancel their order if our "updated" shipping date estimate is pushed back again. This is my first Apple (not including my ipod) and it has been a bad experience so far. I was looking forward to my new mac world but right now my trusty PC is looking better and better. If the delay was for something other than supply issues I might not want to get on this sinking ship.

I feel your pain...I ordered the new MBP C2D then cancelled the order, because I wanted to wait for some more feedback. I had ordered a custom configuration and when I called Apple to hold the shipment until I was got back to them they said that normally they won't do that and with it being a custom config it was not returnable. If i cancelled before shipment I would be able to in essence get a refund but in that case I wasn't even being billed for it since they don't charge the credit card until it is shipped. this all happened last night (sunday). I was made aware that if it were shipped anyway because it had already been built I could still return it for a refund since I had made the decision and it is on file with Apple before fedex got their hands on it.
fast forward to this morning.....Fedex got it before Apple pulled it from the loading dock......in the end, I don't really mind the situation. I will just drop it back at fedex. apple didn't pressure me into keeping it and even helped me expedite the return. I also don't need a replacement computer, so I am not in a bind.
Also, I guess, it i needed a new 'puter I would be ****** off with the delay....on the other hand, I would anticipate any delays or problems if I needed a new one.

Help! I Can't Boot from Firewire Drive (Previous MBP C2D Hard Drive)

Can a hardrive from a C2D Macbook Pro start an i7 Quad MBP?
I just sold my 2008 15" 2.4ghz C2D MBP, (that had 10.6.5 installed), and today bought the newest
17" 2.2ghz i7 Quad Core MBP, (that has 10.6.6 pre-installed.)
I installed a fresh HD on the 15" before selling it, and kept its HD, and put it into a FW800 enclosure.
+(note: The 15" Macbook Pro I just sold, booted fine from this HD in the FW800 enclosure.)+
Before migrating my data, from the FW800 drive, I figured I would upgrade the old OS to 10.6.6, so it would be a seamless migration.
While up and running on the brand new i7, I could see the FW800 drive with 10.6.5 as a Startup Disk option in System Preferences.
I rebooted holding down the option key, selected the FW drive, and pressed the arrow below to continue startup.
The grey screen with the apple came up immediately, but I was horrified that the spinning gear never did appear, and startup froze at that point. I left it like this for five minutes. Grey screen with apple. Frozen.
So, I held down the power key, shut it down, then restarted holding down Command-S to run Disk Utility in SIngle User Mode, (/sbin/fsck -fy). Disk was okay.
I rebooted into the new internal, installed Diskwarrior 4.3, and checked the FW800, and it had no errors.
I opened Startup Disk in System Preferences, and chose the FW800 drive as the Startup Disk, and rebooted. Same result. Grey screen with apple, and no further...
Can someone please help me troubleshoot this?
Should I be able to boot this new MBP i7 with the HD from my old MBP C2D?
Is there something incompatible between the old C2D and i7?

Bad routers w/MBP C2D

I will start with the first reply...

Apple airport extreme base station 5.7 and airport express 6.3, WPA2 personal, randomly drop connections and fluctuate signal strength (15-5 bars).
My first mbp c2d which I shipped back and a new replacement mbp c2d (pure apple software out of the box osX 10.4.8 + 2006-007 patch, no 3rd party, no data transfered from an old pbG4) randomly drop connections (can easily re-establish, thou) and the signal strength fluctuates between 15 and 5 bars, which cuts the average download speed by 50% (e.g. 4Mbit/s)compared with an old pbG4 which (on the same network) never drops connections and is on average faster (10 Mbit/s ) when close (~3 yards) to AEBS or AE.
In a larger distance (~45 feet) from AEBS the mbp c2d has better signal and download speed than pbG4.

Has anyone received or at least seen MBP C2D 17"? I called apple store in London and they told me that there is another delay and I should try it in 7 days. Does anyone know what is going on?

it doesn't seem that strange to me. retooling an assembly line to produce a few hundred models for display purposes which are almost identical (save for the chip) to the previous line doesn't make sense. it's all about money. there is probably more money to be made right now making macbooks and 15 inch macbook pros. they've cranked out some 17s now so that means they've either got a new assembly plant on line or at least have converted some of the lines from a plant formerly making 15s over to the 17s...these kinds of operations changes take a while to make and require considerable planning and commitment to a decision in order for them to make sense, money-wise. anyway, that's my take on it...

Speakers on MBP C2D Are basically mute with three bars left to go.

Describe WORKING mbp c2d airport internet connection with stable signal

As I read many reports about problems in different configurations and after 2 weeks was not able to find a working solution for myself yet, may I ask users who do have a working and stable airport internet configuration to describe it in this thread? Only WORKING configurations please.

I replaced my 4 years old airport extreme base station (AEBS, newest firmware v5.7) with the netgear WPN824 router and my mbp c2d wireless internet access problems are resolved. 802.11g only, WPA2-PSK. I see a steady strong signal on my mbp c2d (11-15 bars) and download speeds in the range 10-15Mbit/s. Also my older pb G4 and dell c2d have a quick steady wireless connection to the WPN824.
With AEBS my mbp c2d signal varied between 0-15 bars (occasionally dropped connection) and the download speeds on the mbp c2d were in the range 3-14 Mbit/s, but on average 50% slower than with the WPN824.

About MBP C2D

I have a MB core duo. When i tap with two fingers on the trackpad the right click options come up....this feature was not there in the MBP core duo 15 inch models
Does anybody know if this feature has been included in the new MBP C2D 15 inch models.

It is true that the functionality was not available in the first versions of the MPB CD, but after the MB was introduced that did support the 2 finger right click, the MPB CD also got this feature.
This was not announced, but it is there

15 " MBP C2D fans running at full speed all the time

A very reasonable thought although it's clearly not DOA. Nor do we know whether it was bought as a CTO or not. The requirements for classing a system DOA are very clear and this system, while possibly not operating correctly, certainly is not a DOA.
I would however make every effort to determine the cause of the problem. Potentially the issue can be caused through software and no fault of Apple. Being able to quantify an issue does go a long way to resolving it.

Slow MBP C2D vs Macbook CD

Hi,
I have a MBP C2D bought brand new in Nov 06 (120GB hardrive) and a MB C2 bought brand new in Sep 06 (60GB hardrive). I have 2GB ram in the MBP and 1GB ram in the MB.
I've had months and months to try them both and it seems over and over that the MB is screaming way faster than the MBP. It's very weird. Even my friend who has a MBP (Core Duo, not C2D w/ 2GB ram) was commenting on how much the MB is faster than his MBP.
I'm sure the definition of 'fast' depends on what you're doing, but for most of what i do, is just surf, open word, itunes, and iphoto. the MB opens each app much faster, is super quick to open finder, reboots and starts from cold very quiclkly (blue bar is visible for only 2-3 seconds).
my mbp takes longer to boot and the blue bar is visible for the entire 'space' (4 inches?)...sometimes this takes over 10 seconds.
did I get a MBP lemon? I mean, my MBP gets the job done just fine, it's just very STRANGE that it's getting smoked by a machine w/ an older chip w/ half the memory and half the hard drive size.
Oh, both HD's are about 40% free.
The Macbook just feels much 'zippier'. Has anyone else noticed this?
I've tried the apple store in SF, Walnut Creek, and Stoneridge and it's a bit tougher to gauge on the displays (probably from all the use).
I feel like a I have a Macbook anti-lemon...it's a lemon in the complete opposite direction!

I have a MacBook Core2Duo 2.0Ghz, and a MacBook Pro Core2Duo 2.33 Ghz, and I don't notice the MacBook being faster than the MBP. Both have 2G of RAM, and in ordinary use, I can't detect any speed difference.
You could run Xbench on both, and see if there's any glaring difference compared against other similar systems.

PB AL 15 to MBP C2D not going well

Tried using Migration Assistant but old PB G4 Al 15" 1.33Ghz always froze as Target Disk on any transfer over 5GB (all that mattered). So moved stuff manually, so no big wonder I'm hosed now.
Please spare me the "wipe it and start over" stuff, installing all the apps & pwd's from scratch will be last resort only, and I manage >60 G4 & G5 Macs at work that will soon migrate to Intel so I need to know how to fix things.
So new MBP 15.4" 2.33Ghz is fine except for:
1. MBP goes online fine at work (web, POP mail, whatever) but typing 1 character into any text field like Google or banks or anything freezes Safari instantly with BBOD. Firefox is fine. Unable to re-install any Java software update or 10.4.8 combo update
2. At home old PB & MBP will connect to Belkin FD7230-4 wire & 802.11g gateway router fine (wireless or wired), can ARD & fileshare fine between them, Network pref's show "connected to network 'xyzap'. ..connected to Internet via Airport (or Ethernet, or both)" but the new MBP can only get RSS feeds (with Safari but NOTHING with Firefox, web sites get "ur not connected 2 internet" [Safari] and "Server not found" [Firefox] nor POP mail for that matter, haven't tried FTP yet..)
x. Why does Migration Assistant fail with target locking up? Tried DU & DW repairs, no luck. On manual moves there were a few files that would kill transfers with "can't read or write" type errors, moving them separately by themselves or deleting got past that.

Not much attitude about m&a (migration assistant?), but about these forums, I never get any help here.
On about the 5th wipe and install try used ma after install instead of during (not the 1st time trying that way) and it left a log file on desktop (never did b4) which pointed to the mail.app files that were the culprits, deleted them, wiped & installed again and success moving 1 home directory.
That said it seems clear from posts elsewhere that there are issues with "can't read or write" issues. The G4 PB had no problem with the files in question.
And as to internet connections, also obvious from posts elswhere that there r issues with MBP C2D's and wireless gateway routers (NetGear, Linksys, D-link & Belkin (I have Belkin F5D7230-4US8.01.07, what a POS, worked with a couple all day at work trying to set up WDS / bridging, when their "tech support" hung up on me in 1st 5 seconds with 2nd level guy I threw 'em back to wally world). Dug a bit deeper tonight, plugged the MBP straight into cox cable modem again, no luck again UNTIL reboot cable modem then joy.
So reran AirPortUpdate2006002.dmg but no joy. kaka. So anyway gonna mark this 1 done and post over at "Getting Online & Networking" to see if the help there is any better.

15" MBP C2D reboots on lid close

Well, it's happend twice in the last 24 hours. I unplug the new 15 MBP C2D. I close the lid. <Dong> The laptop immediately reboots with the lid shut. Not sure if it is a hard reboot or soft, as I haven't had any applications with unsaved work lost -yet-....
The battery seems to be fine and hold a charge well. This reboot thing doesn't happen every time, but now I'm about 2 for 15 in spontaneous reboots after lid closure. (2 for 3 in the last 24 hours).
Anybody else having this problem? I've got the 160GB upgrade and have BootCamp installed.

It happened once to me - this morning. I was using my MBP C2D while travelling to work, shut the lid, packed it in my rucksack, and when I woke it up from sleep at work I noticed that it had gone asleep at the end of the boot process (just before the login window shows up). The log confirms that it actually rebooted some time after I closed the lid, and that it had not finished writing the "sleepimage" file (This is from /var/log/syslog, please check what your own machine was doing when it rebooted!):
