New conversation windows start minimized?

Is there a way to make Skype act like a more traditional IM client, so that every time someone sends me a message, the conversation window pops up?
I am using Skype in Compact Mode and I have selected the "Open a new window when I receive a new message in compact view" option under the IM settings. Yet whenever someone sends me an message, the new chat window opens up minimized to the taskbar. This means it's quite easy to miss incoming messages since the only cue you get is the skype taskbar icon blinking orange.
So, is there a way to have the new conversations pop up and start maximized?

This seems to be because of the default view in skype now which keeps conversations and contacts in the same window. If you want your new conversations to pop up in a new window as they used to you will need to switch to a classic split view instead.  You can do this under the View menu by selecting the 'Split Window View' menu item. Once set new conversations will pop up in their own window as expected

    Bug Report: Skype Desktop: New conversation window stills the system/keyboard focus.
    When the UI is in multi-window mode and a conversation window pops up (due for example to a newly received chat message), that window steals the system/keyboard focus, even though it appears in a minimized state in the Windows taskbar. And this should not happen by default, because it is impractical (especially for screen reader users). And it didn't happen in Skype 6.21 and earlier. But since the new UI was introduced officially in Skype 7.0, it started happening constantly.
    Steps to reproduce it:
    1. From "View" menu, activate the "Split Window View", if it is not already enabled.
    2. From Tools -> Options -> IM & SMS -> IM settings, enable "Open a new window when I receive a new message in Split Window View", if it is not already enabled.
    3. From Tools -> Options -> Advanced, activate "Enable accessible mode", if it is not already enabled.
    4. Activate the "Save" button, to save the changes.
    5. Close all windows, related to Skype. You may keep only the main window opened.
    6. Move the system focus to another application.
    7. Tell someone to send you a chat message. When the message arrives and the conversation window pops up minimized in the Windows Taskbar, everything seams to be as it should. A few seconds after that however, the system/keyboard focus gets moved to that new conversation window, even though it is neither restored/maximized (it is minimized), nor it is visible on the screen (except as a button in the taskbar).
    Actual results:
    When a new conversation window pops up in the Windows taskbar, it stills the system/keyboard focus to itself from the currently focused application.
    Expected results:
    Skype's popping up new conversation windows should not still the system/keyboard focus to themselfs from the currently focused application.
    Test environment:
    - Operating system: Windows 8.1 Pro N, 64-bit, in Bulgarian with all locale settings set to "Bulgarian".
    - Skype version: 7.0.0.102 for Desktop.

    This is a known problem, but Skype have not given us an estimated time for a fix.
    Traditionally, Skype updates have been roughly monthly, so we are due a new version sometime soon. Many of us here are hoping that is has a bunch of fixes for the UI, the focus problem being one of them.

  • TextEdit new document window starts off screen

    In TextEdit, if I create a new document, the window stretches off the bottom of the screen. The bounds of the window are {133, 53, 760, 882}. This behaviour takes place when the preference setting 'Wrap to page' is checked. If I create a second new document window while the first is still open, it fits within the screen at {154, 22, 781, 851} (it moves up to the right by 21 pixels). How can I get the first document to start within the screen's real estate?
    If it is unchecked, the co-ordinates of the upper left corner of the new window are {133, 53}. The size of the window depends upon the font size. Note that the upper left corner also remains the same if I change paper sizes.
    I have deleted the preferences but nothing has changed.
    Does anyone know how to control the size and location of a new document window, with the 'wrap' feature checked?
    Thanks.

    On my machines, wrap to page is enabled and I have window size set to 80x70 which works for me for years.

  • Xmonad and pidgin conversation windows

    Hi
    Not sure if this is a Pidgin related problem, but I'm trying to get urgencyhook to work with new conversation windows in Pidgin - it doesn't trigger an urgent before I focus the conversation window and send a new message (from another workspace.. text based MSN client).
    So basicly this is what's happening..
    I write "Open new window please.." and a new conversation window is opened on workspace "im" - if I go to the "im" workspace and focus the conversation window, then go back to workspace 3 "code", and type another message.. I receive the urgent notification.
    Anyone had this problem? I would love it to notify when opening a new conversation window. Using the "Message Notification" plugin for Pidgin.

    Incredibly fast.. this post is already on Google hehe.
    Ok, so.. I edited the notify plugin (Message Notification), in src/src/pidgin-2.7.0/pidgin/plugins/ to print a debug message whenever a conersation window was opened, and it does:
    (17:47:30) gtkspell: Failed to setup GtkSpell: enchant error for language: en_US.UTF-8
    (17:47:30) gtkconv: setting active conversation on toolbar 0x983b110
    (17:47:30) gtkconv: setting active conversation on toolbar 0x983b110
    (17:47:30) prefs: /pidgin/conversations/toolbar/wide changed, scheduling save.
    (17:47:31) notify: ***** CONVERSATION CREATED *****
    (17:47:31) prefs: /pidgin/conversations/im/y changed, scheduling save.
    static void
    conv_created(PurpleConversation *conv)
    purple_conversation_set_data(conv, "notify-message-count",
    GINT_TO_POINTER(0));
    purple_debug_misc("notify", "***** CONVERSATION CREATED *****\n");
    /* always attach the signals, notify() will take care of conversation
    * type checking */
    attach_signals(conv);
    Uhm, so.. it should notify, and it's being triggered. The problem must lie somewhere else.

    Whenever I launch a new Google window, Google immediately re-opens all other windows I happen to have open but minimized. I then have to either close or re-minimize each window, one at a time. What a pain!!

    Just to address the last point: check your History menu to see whether you have the Restore Previous Session option and use that if you can. If that is grayed out or doesn't restore everything, check the Recently Closed Windows and Recently Closed Tabs lists for other pages.
    The unwanted window may be generated by an add-on. Try disabling ALL nonessential or unrecognized extensions on the Add-ons page. Either:
    * Ctrl+Shift+a
    * "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons
    In the left column, click Extensions. Then, if in doubt, disable.
    Usually a link will appear above at least one disabled extension to restart Firefox. You can complete your work on the tab and click one of the links as the last step.
    Any improvement?
    Here are some other things to check:
    (1) user.js file that changes Firefox startup behavior and overrides your preferences. This article describes how to track that down and delete it if you have one: [[How to fix preferences that won't save]].
    (2) Possible hijacked shortcut. Check the "target" of the desktop icon you use to start Firefox to see whether it lists the unwanted page. To do that:
    right-click the icon > Properties > Shortcut tab
    For 64-bit Windows 7, the Target should be no more and no less than this:
    "C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
    (3) Possible undisclosed bundle items. If you have installed any free software recently, check your Windows Control Panel, Uninstall a program for surprises. If you click the "Installed on" column head to group by date, it is easier to spot bundled junk. Remove everything suspicious or unrecognized.
    (4) Supplemental clean up scans. Our support article lists tools other Firefox users have found helpful: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
    Hopefully that cures it.

  • Windows 7: How to get iTunes to start minimized on boot

    I just got a brand new Windows 7 machine, and installed itunes. I see no option for having it start on boot anywhere in the preferences. I know I can add an itunes shortcut to my startup folder, but this causes the program to start with it's window open. I've tried setting the property to start minimized, but iTunes seems to ignore it.

    Install Windows using Boot Camp Assistant. Register it. Install Parallels and configure it to use the Boot Camp installation of Windows as the guest operation system. Register Windows in Parallels. If the online registration does not work use the telephone registration. It is an automated system that will give you a second registration number. If the telephone system does not work for you call the registration assistance number. They will give you a new key for your Parallels Windows.
    The reason you need to register twice is because Windows uses your hardware configuration to identify what computer it is installed on. When you use Windows in Parallels, Parallels creates virtual hardware that appears different than the hardware used during the Boot Camp installation. So Windows thinks it is installed on two different computers. Once the registration is performed with two different keys (free of course) then you won't have any problems.
    You will need to go through this double registration for Microsoft Office as well if you install it.

    Hi,
    Previously iChat had tried a Last Chat/IM option when using Saved Transcripts - which itself was an option.
    iChat has also tried "Saving" the Last Chat by leaving a Chat window open and using something similar to the Lion method of showing an app in the state is was closed in.
    In Messages the option to Save Transcripts has been removed and Chats or all types are saved as a matter of course.
    What this tends to mean for your iChat style Buddy Chats is that it opens all the Transcripts  for that buddy as a sort of History you can scroll back through if you want  (I have  some Buddies with saved chats gong back to 2004)
    With the Syncing of iMessages with iPhones and iPads (or Touches) then it seems this works slightly differently.
    Although you can delete the chat and the contents of the Chat as separate action it is true that in the Beta as soon as you connect to the same Contact that the contents of the previous chats are shown to you.
    I have found that Messages stores a data base of info on iMessages in Your Home Folder/Library/Messages
    I have found that deleting this chat-db removes the "History" that keep popping up.
    By default the Saved "iChats" are also stored in the Home Folder/Documents/iChats (At least this is the default place iChat used and they go to the same iChats folder where ever you had it)
    Some people claim removing iMessages saved here stops the "History" reappearing.
    In Lion the only access to the Home Folder/Library is via the Finder's Go Menu and hiding down the ALT key

  • Messages - missing 'Start New Conversations From'

    Have an iPhone 4 that I am attempting to use without cellular service.
    Am able to use Facetime but am having a problem with Messages.
    In the Settings > Messages > Send & Receive the phone does not display the 'Start New Conversations From' section.
    I am unable to send from Messages. I assume these two items are related.
    I've tried resetting the phone, using a different apple id / icloud account, all to no avail.
    Any ideas?
    TIA

    This worked for me.  Turn off iMessage in Settings---> Messages. Then turn off iPhone. Restart iPhone then turn iMessage back on.   The phone number should reappear.

  • When starting up Mail 7.3 does not provide a New Message window

    When starting up Mail 7.3 does not provide a New Message window as it always used to? Have I inadvertently turned something off?

    OOPs! My mistake; I meant New Viewer Window!
    The problem is that if I close the Mail window but leave Mail running in the background, the next time I click on Mail in the Dock, I do NOT get the New Viewer Window, just the Mail Menu on the Menu Bar. If I Quit Mail in that state and then start it up from the Dock, I also get on the Mail Menu.
    If, however, I Quit Mail when the Viewer Window is open, it will open up again with the New Viewer Window visible.
    In the past, I got the New Viewer Window whenever I clicked Mail in the Dock.
    Changing settings in System Preferences / General  doesn't make any difference.
    Not a huge problem, just an annoyance. Ran Permissions Repair; no change in the issue.
    Thanks for your response / attempt to help. Sorry again for the mistaken Window name.

  • Start in New Browser window

    Does anyone know how to get a creator project to always start in a new browser window?
    Conversly, I would also like to add a button to close the browser window and end the session.

    I guess I should clarify my question.
    I have a five page web application that aceeses a database. I log the user in as part of the init of the session bean. I would like to log the user out, close the database connection and return the user to wherever the started from in their browser.
    I figure the easiest way to do that is to always open a new browser window when the session bean starts up. This would allow me to close the session and the browser window, forcing a new session to be started the next time the user selects the application form the main web pages.
    What you appear to be saying is that the control of starting the deployed project in a new window would be done from the logic of the main page using javascript, php,html or whatever the main web pages are written in.
    You suggest that my close be controlled through a javascript call. I was hoping to do it within my creator code which is written in java and jsp. Is there a java call to close the browser window?

  • IMessage: "Start New Conversations From" setting is ignored

    In my iMessage settings, I have the option set to start new conversations from my email address instead of my phone number. I don't want anyone having my phone number, so this is a VITAL feature for me.
    The problem is that the setting is IGNORED! New conversations are in fact coming from my phone number. I have tried changing the setting back and forth, even wiped my phone and started from scratch, and still, new conversations come from my phone number instead of my email address.
    How can I get iMessage to acknowledge the setting and start new conversations from my email address?
    Thanks!

    This worked for me.  Turn off iMessage in Settings---> Messages. Then turn off iPhone. Restart iPhone then turn iMessage back on.   The phone number should reappear.

    This can be caused by a problem with an extension (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions)
    Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of your add-ons is causing your problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    See [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] and [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
    If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all your extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    You can use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    You have to close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
