New Core Duo just won't start up again

Hi Everyone,
I am having a problem with my shiny new Core Duo Mini which I received yesterday. I would contact Apple support but today is a public holiday in Australia so I figured I would try the forums.
All went well with the set up. I ran software update and got all the updates (10.4.6, iPhoto, iTunes, Java, Front Row, and a couple of others that I can't remember) and did a reboot. All was fine.
I opened up iPhoto and imported all my photos but as it neared the end of the import the machine just cut out, gave me a black screen, made it's boot-up chime and started rebooting. I have owned Mac's for years and never had one do this to me before.
I figured maybe I had worked it too hard (I just imported 12000 raw images which probably gave it a good workout) so I thought I would do a shut down and let it cool down for a while. Before I got a chance to shut it down it cut-out again and powered off.
I left it for a while then tried to start it up but all I got was the flashing power LED (it flashes very breifly about once a second - sort of like blip............blip...........blip.........blip......... etc. ) and no display signal. I checked out Apple Support and tried a PRAM reset using CMD-OPT-P-R and SMC reset by unplugging all the cables and leaving it for a few minutes but to no avail.
I am using Apple wireless keyboard and mouse and I when it all started to go wrong I had an external firewire drive connected. I also have a blank CD stuck in the drive that I can't eject.
I wondered if it had somehow changed the start-up drive and is looking for another start-up disc or something?? At this point any advice would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Paul.

Hi Tom,
Thanks for that. I tried ejecting the CD as you suggested by holding down the mouse button (I tried with both my Apple wireless mouse and an old MS USB mouse that I have) but it won't spit the CD out.
When I power-up the Mini the CD drive makes the usual mechanical noises that it should and it spins up for a few seconds but all the while I still have the flashing power LED and nothing else happens. I noticed that when I used the MS mouse the optical sensor on the bottom of the mouse didn't light.
I am suspecting that this Mac Mini may be taking a trip back to Apple very soon.
Thanks again for the suggestions.
Paul.

  • Just won't start...

    (Sounds like a car, right?)
I'm in the middle of building a simple flash slideshow, using alpha fades between images. I have three layers, the first one being text, on the timeline for each layer/image. The other two layers are images, small footprint (sized and optimized in photoshop, each less than 100k). When I hit the Enter key it will play on timeline but the preview and fla file just won't start, hung up on the first frame - can't figure this out and I'm guessing I did something somewhere but I can't find it... I've got a more work to do on this one - any ideas?
I haven't got to using any scripts yet, I figured I wouldn't have to at this point since there's really no interactivity (yet)...
    Thanks!

I must have done something to the file... I started over and the new one is working perfectly... I would normally like to let someone attack the problem file, as I support the community but to be honest I'm on limited time... But thank you for your efforts! I really do appreciate it!
I guess it's like, "when in doubt, reboot"... I should have tried starting over before posting but frustration took over... me bad...
    thanks!

  • New Core Duo 2 Macbook benchmarks?

are there any new Core Duo 2 Macbook benchmarks out yet?

Well, 46°C idle do seem high, even for the 4MB Core 2 Duos. I think with the stock cooler you should idle around 38°C to 40°C, depending on your ambient temperature. You can overclock your CPU moderatly without burning it, and if you dont increase the v-core, things are pretty safe anyway. Just make sure your memory can handle the speeds, but if you set the divider to 533MHz (1:1) 300MHz for example shouldnt be a problem. Set the v-dimm (RAM voltage) to 2.1v.
Your CPU temps dont have anything to do with the PSU you use. Its more about the other components in your system and your airflow. Do you have a case with fans sucking air in? If not find some fans that fit into your case (lower front, rear). Using the stock cooler a better airflow will give you better CPU temps immediately.

  • Creeated new account - but safari won't start anymore

I created a new account with a parental control. Logged in under the new account and Safari won't start anymore. It quits directly after starting. Any help suggestion ?
    Thanks much

Does it work in your old account?
If so, delete everything in the folder /Users/controlled account name/Library/InputManagers.
Also try deleting /Users/controlled account name/Library/Preferences/com.apple.safari.plist.
(replace controlled account name with the name of the controlled account)
    Good luck!

My iPod itouch when plugged into computer just flashes the apple logo otherwise it just won't start. Try to reset -nothing.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • 4th gen. iPod touch suddenly won't start up again?

Hey all, hopefully someone can help me out.
My iPod was working perfectly up until an hour ago, and for some reason won't start up again. I've looked at the various tips, holding the power button for 10 seconds, but it still won't start up. Help would be greatly appreciated!
    -Mike

I have the same problem. I bought it 5 months ago, and just used it when I was at home. I take very good care of it. No accidental damage or misuse. But it suddenly can not start up. So I sent my ipod touch to Apple store. To my disappointed, they can not do anything. They do not want to take their responsibility.
Below is the email they sent to me.
Thank you for choosing AppleCare Service.
Your IPOD TOUCH (4TH GENERATION) has been inspected by Apple technicians, who have determined that it has been subjected to accidental damage or misuse, which is not covered by the warranty, the AppleCare Protection Plan, or other Apple repair program. Therefore your original product is being returned to you unrepaired
    So ridiculous and irresponsible
    Hope someone can help me.

  • New 'Core Duo 2 Extreme'

    Hi All --
Not sure if this post is allowed - delete if necess. - it looks like there will be another speed upgrade to Intel Macs - not sure about MBP. Intel 'Core Duo 2 Extreme' chips are on their way. The next upgrade will have MBP jump into your lap.
    Read all about it;
    http://blogs.zdnet.com/Apple/index.php?p=191
    cheers,
    J.
    PB 15/1.25 ghz/SD/80gig/768 RAM/   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Powermac G3

The C2D Extreme is a desktop chip (Conroe), you'll
never see it in a laptop.
The Core 2 Duo is the new name for Merom, it will
start showing up in laptops in a couple months. I
assume Apple will put it in the MBP fairly quickly.
Merom.. it sounds like Celeron, Turion, Duron.. all names that I've always hated. WHY CAN'T WE GET BACK OUR FAR BETTER POWER PC?
Why Sony will mount a "really cool chip", aka CELL which runs @3.2Ghz, on the new Playstation 3, and we have to comply with these "ORDINARY" processors?
I need a true MAC, an outstanding machine, not a commercial one! This is why I'm ready to pay double the price!! What is this INSANITY of that winXP on Apple machines? It's just for commercial purposes, just for money right? Shame on you Steve Jobs, once creator of finest, top computers, now just an industrial like many others.

  • Just got the 5s and it reset when pulling up my icloud back up and now it won't start up again.   Been starring at the apple logo for an hour.   Any suggestions?

just got the new 5s and was retrieving my icloud back up, it then reset automatically and now it isn't turning back on.   Been staring at the apple logo for an hour and the bar has barely moved at all.   Looks like it is frozen.   Any suggestions?  How long should it take to retreive the icloud back up?

If it won't start by conventional means and the battery is charged take it back.

  • Second hand Core Duo or new Core Duo 2?

Ok, I am really in doubt at this moment. I can buy a second hand Macbook 1.83 Core Duo with 2 Gb mem. for EUR 950 which seems like a good deal to me, but... should it be a better choice to go for the second generation Core Duo processors of the current Mac Books considering the upcoming OS? Or is speed more about internal mem than CPU? Can anyone figure this one out for me?

We really can't answer this one for you - it really comes down to personal preference and what you are planning to use the laptop for. Check out the technical differences between the two and think about whether or not the differences are really important to you. There are three big differences, off the top of my head:
    - Core duo is 32-bit, while Core 2 duo is 64-bit.
    - Core 2 duo ships with an 802.11n capable wireless chipset
    - Battery life seems a bit longer with Core 2 duo, and it tends to run a bit cooler.
There are quite a few more minor differences between the two (and several not-so-minor ones that I'm forgetting about, I'm sure). If your price for the core duo is significantly lower than the newer core 2 duo, and if the differences between them don't really matter to you, then I see no reason not to go with the cheaper laptop.

  • Macbook Pro 13" just won't start from original dvd

My MacBook 13", mid 2011, started to slow down, freeze. Tried to start up in safe mode, after that it just won't boot at all. Tried with the original DVD holding down "C" but no disk boot. What to do?
    Rgds

Since it's a Mid 2011, take it in for service, it's still under warranty.
Try charging it up and a SMC, PRAM reset, Hardware Test

  • My new(ish) Samsung S4 won't start.

My new(ish) 30 day old Samsung S4 won't start.  It was working normally this morning.  Now it won't start.  I take out my battery plug it back in, and then the screen displays "samsung galaxy 4" for like a good 3 seconds. Is there any way I can fix this?

  • IMac just won't start up!

I'm running out of ideas here, fellas.
My first-generation iMac G5 won't start up. I turn it on and it only goes up to the screen with the gray Apple logo. It never gets to the point of the spinning gear. After a while, the fan makes a constant loud sound.
I have read similar posts but I have a more complicated situation: even before this start-up problem, my iMac's internal optical drive had died out, so I've been using an external one.
So far I've done the following (with peripherals removed):
    Reset PRAM
    Reset SMU
I've also tried doing the following with the external drive:
    Hardware Test
Run Mac OS X Install CD (Both original and Tiger)
Nothing going, and my warranty's out.
    Help?

Might be worth trying a new PRAM battery, alternativeman. It is a CR2032 lithum button battery - used in many calculators, remote controls, etc etc and available from any electronics part store (and many other places too) for a couple of dollars (or from an Apple dealer for about $50).
Very easy to replace on this model. See http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/imacG5allModelsBackupBattery.pdf
    Cheers

  • Just won't start up anymore.

A Duel 2 GHz G5 won't start up anymore. After and if it restarts, it keeps asking me it can't find Mouse and wants to search for Bluetooth mouse and such. Reset SMU and am in the process of restarting G5 at this moment. Fan is going crazy right now with blue screen just now opening. At least I am getting the blue screen. Before I was finally getting desktop but nothing else but machine wanting to search for Bluetooth mouse and such but never consistent. Sometimes start up would take forever but never finished. Kept asking for Bluetooth mouse. Just crazy. Fan is still going crazy and still blue screen.
Any ideas? Need help now Please!

Had to power button shut down 10 times to finally get tray open and ran DiskWarrior. Only been two weeks since last ran but critical issues repaired. After running DW restart and same thing. Fan running like crazy and won't finish restart. Sounds like problem previous message from Michael Vejar is having.
Will have to force shut down and take in to store for further work.

  • Firefox just won't start, but IE starts ok ~ I have uninstalled Firefox and downloaded Firefox and reinstalled, but still won't load ~ no error messages show

I have run Firefox with no problems for years, but all of a sudden the last 2 days it just won't load. IE and email works okay. I was able to download Firefox by using IE to get on the internet, but I just can't get Firefix to work. Have rebooted a number of times.

I am running XP/Pro SP3. Last Patch Tuesday I installed the latest Microsoft updates. Yesterday I updated Firefox from 3.6.11 to 3.6.12. Since then I have been unable to start Firefox.
Using the desktop icon, using the start menu icon, double clicking firefox.exe all do nothing - a slight flurry of activity and then nothing.
There are no reports in Event Viewer relating to Firefox.
As reported by another, Internet Explorer works.
I just installed 3.6.11 over top of 3.6.12 and Firefox works again.
Since I would rather have the security updates of 3.6.12, I hope you can get to the bottom of this soon.
    Thanks

  • My 20" core duo just bit the dust. Where to from here?

    Hi all,
2 and a half years after purchase, my well loved 20inch core-duo white iMac made a very loud popping sound (together with the acrid smell of smoke) and is now dead (I should have purchased 3 years of Apple Care).
All signs point to it being a busted power supply or even worse, a toasted motherboard.
    I have two questions:
Being an all-in-one unit, how do I extract the hard-drive?
How do I dispose of it? Is there a recycling program? Is there any value left in it?

You can take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1434?viewlocale=en_US) or an Apple Store and have the hard drive removed. They may be able to resurrect the computer.
There is a recycling program. Details here: http://www.apple.com/environment/recycling/program/index.html
