New Dad cannot import video from Panasonic HDC-SD1. Seeks help.

Hi all,
A few week ago I bought a Panasonic HDC-SD1 in preparation for the birth of my first-born. I tested it and it worked fine, importing in to iMovie 7.1 either direct from the camera, or via a USB card reader.
Since then I have updated to iMovie 7.1.1 (running on OSX 10.5.1 Intel iMac).
My beautiful baby boy was born two days ago, and I'm still unable to get the video into the Mac. Using direct camera connection or USB card reader the card mounts, but iMovie refuses to recognise any video to input. I've tried starting iMovie before and after connecting the card etc, but it just won't play ball.
Anyone any other tips to get this working? All was well with iMovie 7.1 - I tried re-installing the old version but it just crashes on being run.
Help! Everyone wants to see my baby boy!

Congratulations on your new baby (your son, I mean) and your new tool (toy). I have a 4-month old, which was my justification for buying the Sony CX7, he also helped me get a new DSLR. Now I'm trying to convince my wife that the baby needs a new Macbook Air.
The CX7 is also a flash based, AVCHD camcorder. For a quick solution to your problem, check out a program called Voltaic. It will batch transcode the AVCHD (.mts) files. This way, you don't need iMovie to recognize the camera, and you can move the .mts files off your flash card for archiving on a DVD, NAS, or external drive for future use. You can then delete the transcoded files after you complete your projects, since you can easily transcode again, if you want use the clips again in a future project. You will want to do this, because the transcoded files are much, much larger than the original .mts AVCHD files.
I hope this helps.

Can I use iMovie 06 or will I be required to use an Intel based (OSX10.4) w/ iMovie08? I can only import the pictures in iPhoto06 but not the movie files? Thank you for your time.

Hi cape_surfers, and a warm welcome to the forums!
UPDATE1: About the MPEG-2 component included with iMovie ‘08
UPDATE2: After raising a stink, I figured that I’d spend a little more time trying to figure out how to make my Handycam work with native iMovie ‘08. Turns out that you have to turn on the camera, wait for OS X pick it up as a USB storage device, and then hang tight for three or four minutes until iMovie detects that your USB storage device is actually a camcorder, and presents the import dialog. I’m glad that I can import native MPEG-2, but am somewhat puzzled by the delay.

  • Impossible to import videos from Panasonic SDR s26 to iMovie 09, previously no problem. Why?

Impossible to import videos from Panasonic SDR s26 to iMovie 09, previously no problem. Any way to solve this problem?

I don't have your model but here are some things to try.
    1) Make sure you are powering the camcorder with AC power not batteries.
    2) Open iMovie before connecting the Camcorder
    3) Connect the USB Cable and turn on the camcorder
    4) Open the LCD screen of the camcorder. Does it give you a choice of Pictbridge vs. PC Mode. If so, choose PC Mode.
    5) iMovie import screen should come up.
Also, make sure you have installed all software updates. (/Software Update). If the software update requires you to restart your Mac, then restart your Mac before proceeding. Install iMovie, iLife, Quicktime, and Leopard updates.
If that still does not work, try taking out your SD card and putting in a USB card reader.
If that still does not work, put the card back in the camcorder and make a disk image of the card using disk utility. After making the disk image, try formatting the card using your camcorder menu. Then retry shooting some footage and importing.
By the way, using MPEG streamclip should not create files any larger than iMovie will create using an import function.

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • Settings to import video from Panasonic T700 camcorder

    Hello Forum,
this is my first post here but I think I'll post often, mainly asking question at first – and here's my first question:
What are the best settings for importing the footage from Panasonic T700 camcorder into the Final Cut 7?
I would appreciate a detailed answer or a good reference to an existing thread here or to existing documents, if possible.
Thank you very much for your help.
    Dimitri Vorontzov

    Hi Tom,
I was just reading some of your post from earlier threads. You're right, it's TM700. My mistake.
Please let me explain my challenge: I'm on this forum as a translator for a non-English speaking videographer who uses a collection of new camcorders, including Panasonic TM700. I'm relatively familiar with Final Cut Pro but not familiar with TM700. I understand that he's shooting ACHDV files in the 1080p60 format, and he needs to be able to edit that footage using FCP 7 and then output the result on a Blu-Ray disk.
    He asked me to ask here on the Forum, what is the most effective way to get the 1080p footage from Panasonic TM700 to FCP;
He also wants to know if there's a way to create an easy setup for a sequence.
What would be the best codec?
Any other questions I should ask here to understand the topic completely?
Should I make a new thread with the correct title so that other people find it easier to find the information?
    Would appreciate your advice.
    Best regards,
    Dimitri Vorontzov

  • Cannot import video from Canon Powershot G9

We just bought a Canon Powershot G9 and have had no trouble importing photos taken on it into our iPhoto (7.1.3). But we cannot import the video taken on the camera at all: every time we try iPhoto crashes and shuts as it starts the import process. We've saved the .avi files to a folder but even when playing them in VLC we get sound but no video. We're using iMac with OS 10.4.11.
Can anyone help in how to get the video from the G9 into iPhoto? We've also tried the Canon software and iMovie but neither worked.

    Hi Terence,
    Thanks for your promt response
I didn't move the file to the desktop because mp4s from my camera are imported by default to iphoto. Recently though, they have been corrupted or just not appearing at all in iphoto or anywhere else.
But I thought about it for a while and wondered if I could import them to (yes, you've guessed it) imovie HD!
I've gone for months looking everywhere for a solution to my problem, but not only was there no help in my mac, neither was the web any use. Consequently, I lost loads of precious little movies, (grandchildren, etc.) thinking the files were corrupt and not worth keeping.
You've obviously realised that I am not a computer geek, but thanks to 'lack of simple knowledge' being available on the net; thanks to you (indirectly) I managed to solve my problem.
I can't help wondering why on earth Apple doesn't admit that iphoto will 'baulk at importing anything that's too big', and simply suggest that newbies to Macs should import movies to imovie.
Thanks again for your clue to sorting out my problem.....now solved.

  • Importing Video from Panasonic NV-DS30 Video Camera

    Hi there
I need advice on how to connect my Panasonic NV-DS30 digital video camera to my iMac to import video into iMovie.
The camera has an iLink socket (aka a FireWire socket) however the manual only talks about digital dubbing with another video camera using an optional cable.
I guess I want to know if I buy a FireWire cable with the appropriate sized plug will I be able to import video into iMovie, without needing anything else?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Steve,
I couldn't find any reference to a NV-DS30 so I'm not sure what you have, format wise. If it has a firewire socket, I might assume that it is a miniDV cam, in which case, yes you need to buy the 4 to 6 pin firewire cable to connect to your Mac. It should import smoothly with iMovie 08 and, as a bonus to buying the right type of cam, you could also import to iMovie HD6. HD6 only imports from miniDV cams.

  • Importing video from Panasonic sdr-h85

Hey all! My husband just bought a family video camcorder..Panasonic SDR-H85. I have final cut pro
on my imac..how can I import the video from the camcorder into FCP? Do I need conversion software?

I believe you're reading a tone into Studio X's response that isn't really there.
The suggestion of the Creative Cow forum and the 2-pop forum actually will give you some great responses for consumer cameras and the CNET site has great reviews as well.
His suggestion to download the free software MPEG Streamclip is a grand suggestion which will allow you to transcode acquisition formats such as AVCHD and then use in FCP if you choose.

Of course you are certainly right about one thing though,

  • Device is unreachable: Cannot import video from iPhone 5 to Win 8.1 PC

This error message has become the bane of my existence as it stands in the way of importing all my photos and videos from my iPhone to my computer and thus not having a 99% full iphone on a daily basis. Most photos are imported just fine, just the larger videos and a few of the old photos show the error message "The device is unreachable." The photos I also had on my photostream so I don't care if those don't move in but I'd very much like to import the 5/10min videos I made. Any help is much appreciated.

I had the same issue. Here is what I did and it works fine.
My iPhone is 5S with iOS 8.1.
On my iPhone, I went to "Settings" --> "Photos & Camera" and I then turned on both "My Photo Stream" & "iCloud Photo Sharing" (you may need to turn on only one feature and it may work...I did not try to turn one on at a time because I was so frustrated and I did not have patience...so I turned them all on). I then unplugged my iPhone and then plugged it back in...the Windows 8 window popped up and I transferred all videos at once. I then also could be able to use Windows Explorer to copy & paste the video files if I wanted to (I could not do this before I fixed it).

  • Cannot import video from Canon ZR10 to iMovie '08

I have a Canon ZR10 mini-DV camcorder. My son is trying to import video to iMovie '08 and it does not seem to recognize the camera. I am using a 4-pin to 6-pin Firewire cable. When I turn on the camcorder, "DV In" appears on its screen so it seems to be in the proper mode to transfer video. However, iMovie doesn't do anything. I don't even get a blue screen. I tried File-->Import from Camera but that didn't so anything. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? He's very anxious to edit his movie! Thanks...

    Hello All,
I have been attacking this problem for a few hours and I have found that if you turn off and or make all network items inactive the camera will immediately be recognized by iMovie.
Took a long time to figure this out. Not sure why this is happening but it has fixed my problem.
Before this fix I would intermently get the camera and its memory sticks in the usb slot to recognize in iMovie.
Now all is well and works every time as long as I turn off or make things inactive
    Hope this works for you!

  • Cannot import video from new iphone 6

I have a new iPhone 6 which contains videos taken today (as well as older videos on the phone after restore). Connecting it to my Windows 8 PC the import wizard comes up automatically and successfully imports photos but not videos.
With the phone connected to the PC, I look in iTunes "On My Device" and click on movies, this view is empty. How can this be since I know there are videos on the phone.

I'm not sure why I'm getting this error message since it is in fact a video. Any suggestions on why this could be happening?

When the box tells you it work with iMovie and I did read the booklet but still doesnt mention anything of a Mac

Hi, thanks I found "log and transfer". I read on the internet that there is problem with my camera model in FCE. When I'm log and transfer I can choose btw formats like .MPl, .MTS and CPI - none of these work to import.
Maybe I'm stupid but I don't succeed to import either in iMove or FCE. More tips please?

I took a few videos with my iPhone and all were imported except one, which I actually had to use image capture to import it.
