New disk for TM backups

I am replacing my current 500Gb disk for backups through TM with a 1Tb disk.
Can I just copy the 500Gb disk on the 1Tb disk before I configure TM for using the 1Tb disk so that I don't loose my previous backups and just continue with incremental backups?

you can copy the old backups to the new drive but don't do it using finder. clone the old TM drive to the new one using either Superduper or the restore tab in Disk Utility.

I need a new disk for 2011 Mac Mini i5 with Radeon 6630M
    Will this fit?

Will I need special screwdrivers or tools?

Wow, I worked on my MacMini after watching the video.
    But BEWARE!
That OWC video misses a crucial step! (I emailed them)
My MacMini had a bit of "invisible" black tape holding the disk connector to the disk, very hard to see. When I pulled off the connector, it came apart !
That bit of tape must be something Apple added, or some manufacturers added, but it really messed me up. I had to send my MacMini off to be repaired, at a cost about $200 including parts and labour.

Make sure your hard drive is formatted properly for the operating system installed.  Go to Apple menu -> About This Mac to determine what it is.  You posted to the 10.5 forum, but your signature says you have 10.9.  Here is the tip on what formatting supports what operating systems:

  • Mountain Lion refuses to install on Hard disk because it is used for Time Backups. I have mounted a different disk for tame backups and still, I cannot install the OSX. What do I do?

I donwloaded the Mountain Lion OSX and it would not install because it said that the hard disk is used for Time Backups. I then mounted a separate Hard Disk and started running the time backups on it.
Still, the Mountain Lion would not install on the main hard disk.
How do I convince it that the haerd disk is no longer used for time backups?

  • New disk for Data Pump

    Hi to all,
OS: Windows Server 2003 EE 64bit, Database: Oracle Database 10g
I do not know whether this question is for here, but …
I have a database server with four SCSI hard drives. The last hard drive I added (300GB) in Disk Management is set up as Layout:Simple Type:Dynamic. All of my other drives are set up as Layout:Partition Type:Basic. The new drive I want to use as location for DATA PUMP dump files.
This new drive I don’t plan to put with another disk in mirror or any RAID configuration, as is the case with other existing hard drives.
Whether to leave it as Dynamic or to put them as Basic?
I was curious as to what the differences are, and if I continue to use it as Dynamic will I have any issue?
    Thanks.

  • Problem using iPod as encrypted disk for G4 Backup

i have created an encrypted disk image on my iPod for backing up my G4 desktop folder. works like a charm. however, OSX limits the size of this disk image to 500MB when it is created using Disk Utility. that is unfortunate since my desktop folder is larger than that. the iPod has 14 Gigs of memory available and i would like the encrypted disk to be larger. is there any way to modify this limitation?
    many thanks

In disk utility when you select "new image", it should give you the option, size, where you can select from various preset sizes or create your own custom size. Try creating the image you your local drive first then copy it to your ipod.

  • How do I change the source disk for my backup?

    Hi
I recently purchased an external hard drive so I can move all my files that I currently have on my desktop to this new drive. How do I change Time Machine to make backups from this new external drive and not from the desktop?  I don't see any options to do this in the Time Machine app. I do see that this new drive is recognized/included in the backups but I don't need two backups of the same files, because as soon as I can confirm that the new drive has been backed up to Time Machine, I will delete all my files that are on the desktop to make room for other stuff. Make sense?
    thanks
    Nadia

Volumes on external drives (except Thunderbolt drives) are automatically added to the backup exclusion list. You can remove the exclusions in the Time Machine preference pane, and then the volumes will be backed up, provided they're in MacOS format. Volumes in other formats can't be backed up with Time Machine.

  • Occasional loss of TC Disk for TM Backups

    Hi all,
Once in a while - with no noticable pattern - I will get an an error that the TM disk could not be found, mounted etc...
The only way to fix it is to use Airport Utility and to "Disconnect All Users" from the Disk settings page.  This fixes it for quite a while.
I see the following in the logs:
    12/22/11 6:04:45.000 AM kernel: AFP_VFS afpfs_DoReconnect:  Max reconnect time: 30 secs, Connect timeout: 15 secs for /Volumes/Data
Is there a way to stop this from happening?
    Thanks!
    Stu

Go back to previousl firmware.. there is a long post here about the issue. 7.6 firmware may not have been the first instance of the issue but it sure became worse.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3526741?start=30&tstart=30
Read it backwards.. you will see the issue has been worked out as mainly the firmware bug.

  • Problems Moving to New Drive For Time Machine Backups

I'm moving to a new, bigger drive for my TM backups. So with the help of some suggestions here, I:
    1. Turned off Time Machine
    2. Formatted the new drive with "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"
    3. Cloned the old drive to the new with SuperDuper (Erase and copy)
    4. Turned on TM and told it to use the new drive (with a different name than the old one) as the backup drive.
That was twenty minutes ago. TM backups usually take a couple of minutes. The only time it went this long is when it was doing its first backup. Is that what's happening? I've still got the folder structure you'd expect -- with a new folder for the backup going on now.
In addition, the clone took forever -- five hours for 120 GB over Firewire 800. It seemed to slow down as it went on, too.
Does anybody have any suggestions? Should I stop the current backup and try something different?
Thanks very much to anybody who can help,
    Steve

Anyway, I did let it finish and everything seems to be normal now. The next backup took just two minutes. Much better.

I trust that you have no issues with the procedure I used?
not sure which procedure you mean but you should be fine now.

  • Time Capsule spends about 30 minutes "preparing" for each backup.

My Time Capsule has two MacBooks backing up to it. One of them backs up fine; the other has a problem. It goes into "preparation" mode before each backup and it stays there for ridiculous lengths of time -- even if the machine was not used therefore nothing needs to be backed up. The TC hard disk just spins and spins.

You have continual messages.. No space left on device
Is your TC full..?? Are you using wireless to connect to the TC?
The time capsule has been  stuck in the "preparing for backup" stage indefinately: like months and months.
Note that Time Capsule is the hardware device.. Time Machine is the software that prepares the backup.. They are completely different.. !!
Open either the TM preference or the airport utility and tell us how much space is reported left on the drive.. or is the local hard disk full??
If you upgraded OS on the computer it can fail to properly clean up old backups and you will need to step in and erase the TC yourself. Or plug in a USB drive and set that as a new destination for the backup.

The new HD is a WD My Passport Edge 500 GB capacity
5 hours to do 6 GB of transfer is NOT normal, even for USB 2.0 so there's something wrong here. I'd say cancel it, wipe the drive and then test the integrity of the drive. Do some file transfers over to and see if it's behaving normally. It could be a bad USB cable, it could be a bad drive or bad enclosure. As it's new, I suspect you haven't really put it through its paces yet and it's important to do that first before commissioning it to serve as your "reliable backup."

Can I use the new Time Capsule to backup my mid 2010 Macbook Pro?
Yes, if you are asking about using Time Machine to backup the Mac.
Also can I want to free up my hard disk, can I save my photos and files on the time capsule and later access through wifi?
You are not thinking of deleting the photos and files on your Mac, are you?  If you do this, you will have no backups for those files.
Another concern is that Time Machine backs up the changes on your Mac. At some point, Time Machine will automatically delete the photos and files from the Time Capsule.....you just don't know when this might occur.
In other words, only delete files from your Mac that you can afford to lose.

    Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.
