New Displays/Price Drops anytime soon? Maybe MACWORLD EXPO

The current displays have been around for awhile. I know the prices have dropped a lot, are we due for another drop in price at MACWORLD EXPO? Or will we see new displays in the near future?
cheers

  • $1,400 Overpriced, huge price drop very soon?

I've wanted a MacBook Pro for quite a while now. The only things that are holding me back are: MBPs need a much better video card and the price. I was looking at Dell (don't worry, my next computer will be a Mac) and the Inspiron 1720 with:
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7700 (2.4GHz/800Mhz FSB/4MB cache)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium Edition
    Jet Black
High Resolution, glossy widescreen 17.0 inch display (1920 x 1200)
    256MB NVIDIA® GeForce® 8600M GT
    2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
Size: 160GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM)
CD / DVD writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)
    Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini-Card
    Integrated 2.0 Megapixel Webcam
56Whr Lithium Ion Battery (6 cell)
    High Definition Audio 2.0
    http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DNDWMA2&s= dhs
This configuration costs $1,674. The closest model of MBP to these specs is the $2,800 model and even after that you need $200 of upgrades to meet these specs. I want to bring to Apple's attention how cheap notebooks are becoming and how much a HUGE price drop would help Apple's sales and increase the percentage of Mac owners. So Apple: gaming notebooks with SLI (or a huge improvement on the current card) and atleast a $1,000 price drop and I'll buy a MBP the first day this changes are announced. What do you guys think?

Well, 1st off, Apple does not read these boards (at least, officially).
So, visit http://www.apple.com/feedback/macbookpro.html to speak (type, technically) your mind.
Not sure where youcome up with the extra $200 needed, but for the Dell you missed bluetooth, N wireless and 30 days tech support options, which brings it $1,843, and of course, gigabit ethernet and a backlit keyboard don't seem to be options.
And there's the form factor - the Dell is an inch deeper, 0.7 inches thicker, and around a pound heavier.
    But yes, it's cheaper.

  • Rumors of a display price drop?

I read somewhere on these display lists about a rumored price drop on the cinema displays.
Anyone know anything to substantiate these rumors?
I see today's Apple announcements didn't include any price reductions on the displays....
    Just curious.

Before you decide an HDTV is the right choice for you, check out HDTV as a Computer Monitor.
Regardless, the point I was trying to make is that you can't reliably estimate the power usage of something from what something else uses. Note that the 'Surprises' article uses specific HDTV's to make its point, but that doesn't mean another model from the same manufacturer will have the same overall power usage characteristics. That will depend on the features it supports, which are in use at any given time, & so on.
For instance, any product with the Energy Star logo must consume less than 1 watt in standby mode, but there is much more to it than that. For more about this, see for example EPEAT and ENERGY STAR compliance - HP Small and Medium Business.
The bottom line is there is no one average power use rating for anything. The best you can do is pick a product with an EPEAT Gold rating, get a power consumption monitoring device like this one, & see how much power the thing actually uses when different features are in use.

  • Is pages getting any new language updates/additions anytime soon?

    HI there,
so I am from Europe - Slovenia and getting a laptop that doesn't support my native tongue was a gamble as it is but now NONE of the writing programs support it. Pages is a no go, Office is a no go, iWrite is a no go. I can add custom dictionarries in Office but they are mostly, pardon my french, crap.
My question is this - is ANY of these programs (Office, Pages, iWrite) getting any new dictionaries/spell-checks (Slovenian specifically) and if so when?
Tnx for your answer(s) in advance.
    Cheers,

  • Refurbished iphone and price drop

    Hi there,
I purchased a refurbished iPhone about 7 days ago. Since the new Phone price dropped $200 I am hoping that the price of the refurbished phone dropped $200 as well.
Does anybody know what the story is?
    Cheers,
    Noah

I believe by purchasing your product at the lower refurbished price you are receiving the "other consideration" and therefore are not entitiled to the $100 rebate. The technique you are attempting to exploit is known as double dipping!
That depends on what the meaning of the word is is.
The letter states that anyone who IS not receiving a rebate or any other consideration, which I would assume to mean a credit card consideration or AT&T credit. It doesn't say anyone who HAD received a rebate or consideration.
I would contact Apple because they should refund the difference between the old and the new refurb price, esp. since the purchase was made within the past 14 days. At least, I hope they would.

  • Price drop or new versions with larger storage space?

does anyone know if there will be a new ipod touch on the horizon anytime soon with a larger storage capacity? ive been thinking about buying the 8 gig version, simply because i cant afford the 16 gig version even though i would love to have the storage capacity of 16 gigs.
also since im posting anyways, if there arent any new touches coming out, does anyone know if refurbs are available and if so, how much they are?
apple also used to offer student discounts on the classic ipod when they were $299 but stopped when they dropped to $249. are they doing that for the touches?
finally, i know this isnt ipod touch related, but since im asking about new versions with larger storage capabilities, are any new iphones on the horizon?
any help would be appreciated. thanks.

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Apple never gives indications about future products. We are just users here and have no idea when new iPods will arrive. Actually the current models are only a very few months old but I'm sure in the future capacities will increase and prices will drop. Set yourself a price and capacity and buy when Apple are selling that model. If you want it now buy now.
You'll simply have to check the online store for refurbs that's the only place they are listed AFAIK and they may only be there for a short time.
I don't believe Apple's Educational discount is available on iPods any longer.
Its safe to assume there are new iPhones on the horizon but there will be no details or timescales until Apple choose to announce them.

  • Markdown in Prices anytime soon...?

    Yo,
Atm im in the market for a BIG lcd (30inch) but the 30" ACD is AUS$3200! way too much for me as the dell 30" is AUS$2600. Can we expect prices to drop on ACD anytime soon..?

We can only hope so, since we have figured out how to use PNGs as TPIs to do Copyright and Frame overlays as Id Plates, not to mention End Panel images. It would be nice to catalogue them from with in LR.
    See

  • New feature phones anytime soon?

Are there going to be any new feature phones anytime soon? I haven't seen any that I like, and am just wondering if there will be any new ones in the near future. Most of the ones sold now are absolutely worthless and the rest (theres only 1 or 2 of them) don't really line up with my tastes and I'd be better off keeping my old phone then get a new phone that will fall apart in a few months or getting one I don't want.
And please don't just give me the link to the feature phones , I'm completely capable of looking there myself and also please don't tell me to sign up for updates, as I'd rather be told by an actual person than being sent a generic email that doesn't really give me the information I'm asking for.
I'm just curious if anybody has any information about new feature phones coming out this summer. I'd like a phone with at least some of the capabilities of a smartphone, or at least a phone that looks nice and works well, but I'm unable to have a data plan since all my money is going towards a college bill and my parents are in control of my phone bill.

Appearently new phones running MP Brew are in the works but I don't suspect they will be out until late this year.  This question has been posted more than a few times and Verizon is unwilling to give an answer.  The fact that no one is previewing a phone should also be telling as to when the new phones will ship.

sounds like you broke the display when you dropped it.  There's nothing we users here can do for you.
Since the iPhone warranty does not cover accidental damage, you will have to pay to have your phone repaired or replaced.  You can bring it into Apple for an out of warranty exchange in the country of purchase, or you can find a 3rd party iPhone repair store in your area.

  • Gregory Johnson, Director of the Consumer Defense Resource Group, responds to the recent iPhone price drop.

Gregory Johnson, Director of the Consumer Defense Resource Group, responds to the recent iPhone price drop.
In a strange turn of events this week, some consumers are upset now because as of Wednesday (Sept. 5) Apple lowered the retail price of their iPhone by $200. The 8GB iPhone is now $400 rather than $600. Customers raised such an outcry that Steve Jobs has published an open letter in response.
Apple and other companies are continually coming out with new products that usually offer more speed, more storage, more features, and cost less than previous models. Nobody has ever complained -- until now. Why haven't people complained in the past when Apple has had significant price drops and major upgrades on their other products? There wasn't a revolt then. There were no mobs of angry customers demanding rebates.
My first CD drive was a 2X speed external drive that required a special interface card in the computer. It cost $1,200 and today better drives are available for about $30. My first scanner was a very slow and big unit costing over $1,000. Today, better scanners are available for under $100. My first computer cost more than $2,000 and had a 20MB hard drive. With 8GB of storage, the iPhone should cost about $800,000. So, $600 didn’t seem too expensive.
I bought my iPhone for $600 knowing that by next year they would probably drop to about $300 or $400. I didn't think there would be a mid-year drop, but so what. I knew the trajectory of technology progress would mean that a better phone will be available in 6 to 9 months at probably a lower price -- more apps, faster, more features, more memory. It's a given. You buy something this month. Next month it will be obsolete. That's just the way it is. Perhaps Apple should put a disclaimer on their website stating: "Warning: Our products will increasingly become faster, cooler, more innovative, and offer greater value for the dollar as time goes on. Get used to it."
Apple is progressing so quickly now, beyond any other technology innovation company, that this kind of thing is likely to happen again in the future with some other product of theirs. Are people going to complain each time? Must the company give out rebates each time? This all seems so silly. It’s no longer possible to compare Apple to other companies with regard to their ability to implement product improvements. It’s like dog years versus human years. Two months in Apple’s world of product development is equal to about 6 to 9 months for most manufacturers. I know it is difficult, but people need to get used to that.
To the complainers out there, I have a few questions. Would you like Apple to be less innovative? Would you like Apple to not give you more value and voluntarily drop their prices by hundreds of dollars? Is that what you want? Don't get upset at Apple just because they are pushing the envelope of technical innovation and value from one month to the next. What if Apple released an 8-core computer this summer and then by fall they announced their new 16-core computer? This is the kind of development and progress pace we need to start expecting from Apple. The migration to Intel processors went much faster than anticipated.
Some research suggests that the iPhone cost of materials are about $300. So, there had been some complaints that Apple is price gouging by selling the iPhone for twice that amount. What people don’t understand is that there are other costs in building a piece of technology and running a business beyond the electronic components that go into them. The actual cost per 8GB iPhone is probably about $550. When Apple sells them for $400 each, I calculate they are taking a loss on the phone of about $150 per phone. Why would a company do this? There is something called a “lost leader” in retail sales. It’s a product you sell below your cost in an effort to rapidly expand your customer base. I’m guessing this is what Apple is doing by offering the iPhone at such an amazingly low price.
I'm planning to purchase an Apple notebook sometime soon. I'm not in a hurry, so I'm waiting until they announce the next major upgrade to their notebook line. I'm guessing it will be this fall. If I really was in a rush to get a notebook, I'd get one now, and then be a little disappointed when the new ones are announced -- but I wouldn’t be surprised. Instead, I'm waiting. I'd like to see built-in broadband cards (cellular data access) and LED back lighting in the 17-inch notebook. Perhaps larger hard drives and faster processors would be nice. It would be wonderful if it had an optical glass touch screen like the iPhone.
This latest uproar reminds me of the consumer complaints about iPods scratching. For decades, portable handheld computing devices have been available. They get scratched, and nobody says anything. Anyone concerned about their device scratching can purchase a protective cover. Then Apple comes along and offers their product. Suddenly consumers are in an uproar about it scratching and there is a class action lawsuit. It doesn’t seem fair that the most progressive and innovative company out there is the one that gets beaten up by consumers the most.

The analogies and comparisons are still way off. Production didn't get cheaper, the phone didn't get upgraded, no carrier's are subsidizing, retailer's are not discounting. Never has the MSRP of CD-ROMs, nor cellphones, nor HDTV's dropped this quickly in history.
I'm tired and going to bed. But here's your assignment. Apple's price decrease rate is 33.3% in 67 days. What would a $10,000 item cost at that rate in one year?
Actually product advancement and innovation are very much the central issue here. Apple has effectively "upgraded" the 4GB unit to 8GB and reduced the price by $100. It's all in how you look at it.
The real issue of innovation and development has yet to be seen, but the recent price drop is an indicator that Apple already has something "in the shoot" to be released soon.
I was thinking it might take a year for a new version of the iPhone to be announced. Yet, with the recent price drop, it seems they may be lowering the price on the original unit to make room for a new one. Which is my point exactly. Apple is so fast at innovating that they already have something new to release (that's my prediction).
They can't release something new and sell the old units if the "something new" and the "something old" are at the same price. It makes sense that the 8GB unit would drop to $400 and the new one will be $600.
