New Drive Won't Install OS

This is a long painful saga with a failed PowerMac G5. The original system drive failed a week or so ago and after a valient attempt with DiskWarrior to resurrect the drive, I was forced to format the drive and reinstall the OS. But it would not let me: mid-way through the first Tiger Install disc, I'd get the message "There were errors during the installation" and to try again. Which I did, numerous times.
So I acquired another drive, reformatted it and set it up for Tiger install. Same problem. I did have the foresight to jot down some of the error messages in the Installer Log. With the original failed drive, I had gotten the error message: Error Detected. Then "NSGenericException". And then the explanation: "Some files for AsianLanguageSupport may have not been written correctly (code 1)"
Today, on the newly installed drive, I got the Error Detected and "NSGenericException" with the explanation "Some files for Media Files may have not been written correctly (code 1)"
Also, I have formatted with HFS+
Any clues? Is it the G5 itself? Did I just spend close to $600 bucks on 4 extra gigs of RAM and a hard drive and its the G5?!

I can't be certain, but it sounds to me like you have a dirty/damaged Mac OS X installation disk or a flakey SuperDrive. It's also possible that your new RAM is causing a problem, so if the install disk looks good (I'm presuming you're using the system disk that shipped with the G5 or a retail copy of Mac OS X 10.4, not the system disk from a different model of Mac) and the SuperDrive seems to work OK with other boot disks (DiskWarrior, for instance), then you might try removing the new RAM and see if that makes any difference.
Hope this helps.

  • Hard Drive Failure, New Drive Won't Install

Like many others here, my seagate hard drive failed. After driving two hours to the Apple store in Orlando, FL they told me that they didn't have any appointments for the day. I waited around to see if anyone cancelled and luckily after and hour and a half they agreed to see me. Told me my hard drive was toast, they would replace it (I could come back in 4 fours and pick it up), but wouldn't give me my old one back to try and have info recovered, so I left with my non working macbook. All in All I was VERY dissapointed with my first Apple store experience!!
I placed a call to see what recovery cost, and was informed anywhere from 500 to 3,000 dollars, depending on how much information they recovered. I don't have the money for that, so I just stopped at Circuit City on the way and purchased a new 160GB WD hard drive. When I pulled the old HD out the little rubber rail on the side came out with it. It took me many times to keep the flexible rail in place while sliding the new HD in to get it where I think that it is mating up properly. When I put everything back together and boot while holding the C key, I still get the flashing folder with a question mark.
    Someone Please HELP Me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes indeed, and I do back up, but just not the most recent data. This is not about Apple or anybody being responsible for lost data in un backed up drives, it is about them caring about the customers enough to let them know they have are looking into an issue with their defective seagate drives, and there is a potentially higher risk than usual in the meantime. Classic case of protecting themselves more at the expense of their customers.
I understand. My guess (just speculation) is that Apple and Seagate are negotiating right now over this. I wouldn't necessarily expect the customer service employees of Apple to know the inner workings of the legal and business team or to be apprised of it until there is a resolution between Apple and Seagate.
Most users don't have an IT department at home, or a nightly backup strategy/capability. I back up my data weekly or more often given the nature of the data I have. Going forward I would like to do what you do. How do I make and maintain a bootable clone of my hard drive without spending hours a day?
Set up a RAID configuration with an external hard drive. All data would be simultaneously mirrored to the redundant hard drive. I've never done it, but I hear it's not that bad.

    Hello SandyJeanne,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information on this, take a look at:
iTunes 11.1.4 for Windows: Unable to install or open
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS5376
    Check for .dll files
Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\iTunes and C:\Program Files\iTunes and look for .dll files.
If you find QTMovie.DLL, or any other .dll files, move them to the desktop.
    Reboot your computer.
Note: Depending on your operating system, you may only have one of the listed paths.
    Uninstall and reinstall iTunes
Uninstall iTunes and all of its related components.
Reboot your computer. If you can't uninstall a piece of Apple software, try using the Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall Utility.
    Re-download and reinstall iTunes 11.1.4.
    Best of luck,
    Mario

my photo's were in a 9.2.3 version of iPhoto. Now I can't move my library across. Help
    What exactly is the problem?
You are now running Mavericks. What version of iPhoto do you now have installed? If you restored  an iPhoto 9.2.3 version, it will not work with Mavericks, you first need to update iPhoto to the current version 9.5.1.  Check, if you are seeing an update on the "updates" tab of the App Store, when you sign in with your Apple iD, or on the "Purchased" tab in the "Accept" portion of the tab.
What kind of backup of your iPhoto library do you have?

  • My new blank hard drive won't install OSX from the disk?

For some reason my Mac book pro won't install OS through the install cd or through the flash drives. It will load the disk but then freeze when I click install. It won't load through the USB either. I have done multiple diagnostics at the mac store and they tell me that my hd is bad. Twice the hd was fresh out of the box and installed that day. I spoke to a supervisor via phone when I called apple care and he told me that unless I have all apple parts in the computer they can't accurately diagnose the issue. It feels like they're trying to con me into paying double for a "apple hd". What can I do to get my computer working?

I would purchase an external USB enclosure for the HDD. With the HDD in the enclosure, install OSX and then mount in your MacBook. If you continue to have problems, it could be a faulty internal SATA cable.

  • New hard drive won't install

I am trying to install a harddrive into the second bay of my 2005 Power Mac G5.
The drive I'm installing is a Western Digital Caviar black 2TB. It is and SATA drive and the same one has installed successfully on my newer G5 tower.
I plug the drive in, start up the computer - and it doesn't show up. The computer can't find the drive, not even through the disc utility.
I know the bay works since it held a smaller, older drive before that also shows up if I put it back.
Is the drive too new or large for this older computer to recognize it? I'm definitely at my wits end.....

G5s will take up to 2.2 TB drives no problem, I think you need a Jumper on Pins 5&6 to slow it ti SATA 1 speeds.

  • New Hard drive - won't install windows from recovery disc

I am having an issue with my Satellite L505D-S5965.  I replaced the hard drive (upgraded from 250 to 500GB) due to issues with the old one (which had been replaced once already) and am using the recovery disc I made before my other hard drive crashed.  When I boot the computer, it says it is loading Windows files, asks for country, etc., but then doesn't display an operating system to choose and asks me to choose drivers.  I can't restore it from a system image because I kept getting an error on the old drive when I tried to create one.  When I've checked, it says that Windows isn't installed on the computer.  I checked the BIOS and it is recognizing the new hard drive.  I have also tried booting it up from the DVD/CD using the set of disks I created after I got my new hard drive previously, but it doesn't seem to even recognize them and I can't get to the Toshiba Recovery Wizard. I would order the Toshiba Recovery Media, but with the issues I'm having, I'm not sure that is the fix.  I'd hate to be out another $30 on an old computer (since we also had to replace the mother board in the past few months) if I'm not sure that will cure the problem.

The usual problem is restoring to a drive with advanced-format technology. Nearly all the new drives use it. See this message from three years ago.

  • HP CM1312nfi driver won't install

Hello, I just bought a new computer with a windows 8.1 Pro version on it.  I try to install the drivers but the install software won't let me.  It says: "The Operatingsystem on this computer couldn't be recognised as a supported operatingsystem.  This is only a warning message.  The install can continue.Actual O.S. The install can't continue until this issue is resolved.* Only problem, the continue button is greyed out and I'm forced to abort. I tried finding a new driver but the HP support site only proposes the universal driver.  That one works fine BUT as you can imagine, no scanner possibilities. So help is most appreciated. Content of autorun.log.... CStubApp::CStubApp: Leaving

  • Apple mobile device USB Driver won't install (Code 37) on my 7th Generation iPod Nano

As a result, iTunes won't detect my iPod. But the iPod will charge when I plug it in to my comp, and there is an iPod folder in "My Computer". But after installing iTunes, it no longer says “connected” on the iPod (even though it still charges it). And, in Device manager, there is a yellow exclamation mark that appears in the DVD/CD-ROM drive directly after installing iTunes – there is also a yellow mark next to “Apple mobile device USB Driver” when my iPod is plugged in. For both, it says “Code 37.” I know how to fix the DVD/CD-ROM drive problem (by deleting the filters) but the Apple driver still won't install after that. I've tried troubling shooting this. I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, but it hasn't made a difference. And I've uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes multiple times, too, and every time I reinstall iTunes the same thing happens: my iPod no longer says “connected on the screen,” and the  DVD/CD-ROM drive gets code 37 again. Also, I tried different USB cables/ports.
Any help of suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And I think I've already read a lot of troubleshooting guides on this site, but haven't had any success so far.

Sorry, I'm confused. What do you mean by “leaving all other USB devices disconnected”? Does that include my mouse, keyboard, etc? And does that mean I uninstall those things in the device manager?

    Hi,
Right mouse click on the update and select run as administrator.
You might need to uninstall the previous video driver before attempting to install the new driver.
If you are not running VISTA service pack 1 then install it before trying the update.

  • New HDD, won't install from DVD - freezes

I have a MBP from 2009 and the hard drive went out last week. I managed to pull a backup off of it with DW 4.4 and my SATA-USB converter. The new drive arrived today, so I installed it (same drive I had, as recommended by OWC), and put in my 10.6 disc.
I hold down "C" and nothing happens. Drive spins, but apple logo never appears. The first time I booted up, I didn't hit a key and I received a folder with a "?" in it. I restarted, and tried "C" and SHIFT and others. When I held OPTION during the boot, I saw the icon for "Mac OS X Install Disc 1" so I clicked it.
NOW IT'S FROZEN. The DVD drive isn't spinning... nothing is happening.
    What are my options here?
    Thanks,
    Blake

Yes.  During the installation process, select the external HDD for the OSX installation.
That way I can then install the drive into the laptop, fire it up, and update via internet, back to Mountain Lion?
    Will that work?
Yes, assuming that there are no issues with the laptop in which you are installing the HDD.  I would test it first externally to see if it will boot the MBP in question.
    Ciao.

  • Optical drive won't install programs from CDs

I have a S300-EZ2501.  I downgraded my installation from Vista Business to XP Pro.
My drive has stopped installing programs that come on CDs.  I did not have this problem while loading all my software onto the laptop.  Now, however, when I insert an installation CD into the drive, it attempts to read the CD, but cannot initialize the Autorun file, so nothing happens.  I've tried running the install from the Run line, or by browsing to the file, but that does not work either.  I also tried deleting the device from my system and reinstalling; that didn't work either.
Are there any registry settings for the optical drive that I can check?  I want to make sure that the system is pointing to the correct location.
    Thank you.
    Barry L. Lippitt

I tried to restore to earlier settings, but that did not help.
If I try to doubleclick on the executable file on the CD, the hard drive light goes on, but not the external drive light.
I'm starting to think this is a WindowsXP problem and not a drive problem.  I copied the contents of one of the program CDs to my hard drive, and tried installing from that directory.  When I double-click on the Setup.exe file, there is sporadic hard drive flashing light, but nothing happens.  The programs install from .exe files and not .msi files, so its not a Windows Installer problem.  What other settings can I check that affect running setup programs on the laptop?
As I'm typing this, all of a sudden the executable program screen appeared on the laptop (after about 10 minutes).  Maybe it will install, but that's a very long time before it happens.
Nothing more happened (10 more minutes).  When I closed the screens fromy my toolbar, I received a popup telling me that I am ending the "nonresponsive program 32-bit Setup Launcher."  I think there is a problem with this file; when I tried to install other programs (16-bit, from earlier versions) and had to close them down, I received messages that the 16-bit system was unstable.
Is there a way to repair these files on my laptop?  What might have destabilized them?
As a reminder back to the beginning of this thread, my laptop came with Vista Business installed, but I downgraded from the restore CD to WinXP Pro.
