New driver killed Media Pla

I installed the July 2008 web update for Audigy 4 and it zapped all music file playback. System sounds like start up still work. I've tried everything in the FAQ. Rolled back the driver. Uninstalled and reinstalled the sound card several times. Even uninstalled all the associated software and reinstalled it from the CD. Theoretically I'm back to my previous setup. Except I only get system sounds, no music files. Windows media player shows a red X and then an error message saying.... "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There might not be a sound device installed on your computer, it might be in use by another program, or it might not be functioning properly. " But iTunes and WinAmp both work!!!
Can anyone advise my next step here. I have a big music library and can't play any of it right now in the way I had it set up.

Welcome to the club of no sounds--software auto update managed to kill my Volume, Audio and Voice in Sounds & Audio Devices. Microsoft's research team is contacting me tomorrow in attempt to get sounds back and I will advise on outcome... Basically I managed to get back my 3D direct sound and soundfonts by removing all software, drivers etc and reinstalling from my CD disk but only hardware, 3D direct sound and soundfonts passed the diagnostics test... I have the sb audigy 2 zs.
So u have to remove software from Add/Remove software, Uninstall creative stuff from Device Manager, remove creative folders from program files, windows and Documents & settings and use a cleaner to remove the rest. Empty the recycle bin and then start up without the card in place. Then turn off power, reseat the card, startup and reininstall from only your CD and u should be back to square one before attempting to update driver--if u are lucky--I wasn't and still have Volume, Audio and Voice indicating I have no sound device in place and have only managed to get back the 3D direct sound which means my on-line game Eve now has sound again--rest is toast... I may have to reformat my dri've and reinstall windows XP Pro. Microsoft has been working primarily to gain back sound using on board audio....Previously the chat help person tried a number of things and ran a system integrity check and when he got to SFC scan (whatever that is), it would not complete and so as I indicated above--research team is getting involved.

Can you afford a new Thunderbolt case and cable? any case with FW800 is going to be slow 72MB/sec and less, and any new 1TB drive is capable of 75MB/s minimum up to 125MB/sec.
Thunderbolt storage can of course when setup properly reach 100's of MB higher using multiple drives.
Use what you have for a system backup or for secondary backup storage.
you might be able to take the drive - most cases allow you to open and swap drives - and use this:

Best format for new 500GB internal media drive

Apologies if this has been asked before.
Just got hold of a Mac Pro and adding a second drive for media. I assume this should be initialized as Mac OS Extended, i.e. NOT journaled. New to Intel Macs so haven't seen the "case sensitive" initialization options before - what are they all about?
Also, I may install a windows partition on this drive at a later date. Will that cause any problems down the line and will it affect the initialization choices now?

Denis, OS Extended is what you want, period. I'm guessing that making it case sensitive would mean just that, your file names would be case-sensitive.
As far as installing a windows partition on this drive, I do not think that is wise. You do not want to partition your media drive and I think that your windows partition has to be on the boot drive, but I am not positive on that one. If it were me I would not partition my media drive, EVER. If you need a separate partition for Windows and it doesn't have to be on the boot drive, then just spend a few bucks and buy another drive, you have plenty of bays in that machine.

Media offline with new drive

Hi everyone. Lat night I bought a Free Agent Pro external hard drive. My old drive was getting filled so I transferred some files to my new drive which only mainly consisted of audio files. The hard drive only came with a USB wire btw. So when i went to launch final cut it had some media off line files, so i did the standard... file... reconnect media, and it found the file but when I hit ok to import it FCP shut down. It did it several times. Is this because I'm using the USB and not the fire wire? It also has a eSATA port on the drive, but it didn't come with the cable. Which is the correct one that I should be using? USB or eSATA?

New MacBook Pro? 17" MacBook Pro? Do you have a slot that can be used for eSATA? If so, use it. Otherwise get rid of the drive. What's your video format anyway?

Disk utility reports "Device could not be opened" - error when trying to format a new drive in a Mac Pro 1,1

I have encountered the following behavior when trying to format a new drive with disk utility. This description has also been send via the Mac Pro feedback as a bug report to Apple.
On searching the web and forums with this particular error message and behaviour I could not find any usful results. So maybe the following description may be helpful for some users.
Best regards.
1. Drive Bay 1 contains the original 250 GB Startupdisk. It works without errors.
2. Drive Bays 3 and 4 contain each a WD Caviar Black 2 TB SATA 3 HDD. They work without errors.
3. I have purchased a third WD Caviar Black 2 TB HDD.
4. In Drive Bay 2 there has been a Seagate 750 GB HDD, which worked in conjunction with all the other drives without error.
5. I exchanged the Seagate HDD in Drive Bay 2 with the new WD Caviar Black 2 TB HDD.
6. On starting the system, it will report to initialize the new drive.
7. On trying to initialize the new drive with disk utility it reports the error [translated from German] "Erasing of the volume has failed. The device could not be opened."
8. I thought that the drive is faulty. Thus I created an RMA-Case at WD. They exchanged the drive without problems.
9. On getting the exchanged WD Caviar Black 2 TB drive I put it in Drive Bay 2 as before.
10. On trying to erase and format the exchange drive I got the same error message "Drive could not be opened."
10.1 On selecting the physical drive in the devices list, disk utility reports all information in the bottom area of its window as usual, e. g. hard disk description, connection bus, type and place, capacity, write status, SMART-status, partition scheme.
10.1 On leaving that drive selected in the devices list and clicking the info-button, disk utility will also report additional information as usual, e. g. Name, Type, partition scheme, media-identification, media name, media type, device tree, … , number of relocated sectors, etc.. All this information appears to be valid, as can be compared to the other devices information inside the other Drive Bays. Also the disk numbering scheme appears to be standard - 4 HDDs give the numbering disk0, disk1, disk2, disk3.
10.2 From that information I conclude that the SATA-bus and connectors electrically work properly, the drive has spun up and can be accessed by the system normally.
11. I powered down the computer, took out the HDDs from Drive Bays 3 and 4 and put the caddy with the new exchange drive in Drive Bay 4 [Maybe, I could have also just left it alone in Drive Bay 2, or 3].
12. After powering on the system, disk utility will quick format the exchange drive without any error message. Also, when erasing again by selecting the option to write zeros to the drive, disk utility will finish without error.
13. After disk utility finished formatting, I put back the original drives into Drive Bay 3 and 4 and put the now newly formatted drive back into Drive Bay 2.
14. After switching on the computer the system start and login proceeds without any error message. All drives appear as expected on the desktop.

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

Just put my i-tunes library on a 2nd hard drive, how do I easily change the location where the program looks for current songs from the C:/ drive to the new drive without going thru each song individually in the "get info" tab

I just installed a new hard drive and transfered my i-tunes library to the new drive. How can I make a bulk change of the location the program looks for the current songs. I know you can do it song by song from the "get info" tab but I need to do it for all 4500 songs. I have already changed the location that new files are stored to the new hard drive.

The pop-up lets you connect to the library file, iTunes Library.itl, on the external drive. This will, in turn, automatically update the preference for the iTunes Media folder to be the iTunes Media or iTunes Music folder inside the iTunes folder on the external drive and it will update the locations of all the content inside the media folder so that it uses the version on the external drive.
This works seamlessly if all iTunes content was inside the iTunes Media (or iTunes Music) folder (which was itself inside the iTunes library folder) before you moved/copied the iTunes folder. For content outside the iTunes Media folder iTunes should remain connected to the original location. These files should be consolidated (before or after the move/copy) and in addition, if available the library should be upgraded to the newer layout which places iPod Games and Mobile Applications inside the media folder instead of the library folder. (File > Library > Organize Library...)
For split libraries there are methods to rejoin them before moving (preferred) or repairing after the fact (e.g. my script) which I can go into if needed.

Arch mirror to new drive [solved]

Hi guys, a newbie question here.
I wish move my current arch installation to a brand new drive using Clonezilla but the operation wasn't 100% successful. The mirroring operation from the old drive to the new one didn't give me any problems but I cannot boot into the new system. Grub lets me choose operating system (Arch or centos) but shortly after it gets stuck, throwing errors like: "failed to parse block device name for /dev/sda1".
I've tried editing my menu.lst by mounting the partition via Arch live-cd (but I don't really see why I have to change anything at all). The menu.lst file looks exactly the same as my old/current Arch's ditto. I also tried changing the UUID in root=/dev/uuid etc into root=/dev/sda1 but no joy. A desperate and probably long shot solution (at least in my mind!) was to generate a new mkinitcpio but that failed too saying it cannot find /boot/grub/kernel26 etc.
Did I miss something?
The reason for me wanting to move my Arch installation is that my Seagate is way too loud. The new drive is from Samsung. Same size. Supposedly quieter.
Any ideas?
Edit: the mkinitcpio is untouched, it's supposed to find all pata, scsi, sata etc.

Possibly the mkinitcpio command didn't work as it should since I couldn't chroot into the new drive's partition for some reason (following the Arch Wiki, how to chroot). But I have to give it another shot checking out Blazercist's how-to.
"Anyhow this is basically what needs to be done to correct the problem.
1. Boot ArchLive
2. mkdir /media/disk
3. mount /dev/sdxX /media/disk
4. chroot /media/disk
5. mkinitcpio -k 2.6.28-ARCH -g /boot/kernel26.img
6. nano /boot/grub/menu.lst
7. Replace any references to UUID with /dev/sdxX (where xX represents your drive and partition) instead, save and exit nano.
8. reboot
Make sure and pay attention to the output of the mkinitcpio command in my step 5. If there are any errors relating to one or more of the hooks you'll need to edit /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and remove the hook it complains about !!IF POSSIBLE!!. I for example had some problem with the autodetect hook which caused my regular kernel to fail to create an image.
If mkinicpio doesn't complain and tells you it SUCCEEDED generating the images then you should be good to go."

Just downloaded and installed the driver and it does exactly what is needed.
I can now turn off the automatic dragging (which caused me to move so many files by accident) and adjust the tap speed etc.

W500 ATI FireGL 5700 BSOD on new driver upgrade

I'm seeing the video corruption where I get a dot/fuzzy pattern randomly at times. As much as I can figure out, a new driver may take care of the video corruption.
However, I am consistently getting a BSOD when upgrading to the latest 8.752.4-101022a-107489C (windows7, x64) dated 15/Nov/2010 driver. After I install and reboot, the BSOD occurs and I'm forced to go back to restore state in order to get the machine to boot. I've tried this several times with or without killing the ATI Catalyst program before install.
Anyone have any ideas on how to figure this out? Anyone seen this issue before and know of a workaround?
I also noticed that after install and the restore state runs, the 7vd616ww.exe file is 0 bytes. Weird.

Your assupmtion is right....its a problem with the nvidia display driver.
Try booting in safemode and deinstalling the driver. This should at least make u able to boot normally. Then try to install one of those modded-drivers. I've been using those for a long time without problems

Moving Referenced Photos to new Drive

I have my media files on external drives and these are getting full now. My main media drive contains 480GB of files and 380GB of them is my referenced Aperture Library (30K+ pictures and video clips).
For some tests I want to put the data onto newer and bigger drives.
Copying the whole disk in the Finder works well and is done after approx. 2 hours (maybe a bit more).
In Aperture I have to show all files, select them all and choose "Locate Referenced Files...". In the Dialog I choose the location for any one of the 30000+ listed files and search it on the new Drive. Then I'm doing a "Reconnect All".
So far so good. But now one of the most time consuming Aperture Processes starts to work. Unfortunately this is a modal process and I can't do nothing but staring at this slow process.
OMG it is so unbelievable slow.
FOUR hours later the job was done and everything is fine.
Is there something I can do to speed up that task? I mean - has this to be that slow? It takes longer than copying more files in the Finder. Hello?
I'm on hold with my further Drive test because the whole thing takes too long at the moment.
Any suggestions?
(I refreain from using "Relocate Masters" inside Aperture because the Referenced files are spread over the media disk and I want to clone the whole disk outside of Aperture.)

I have just replicated the issue you are having and can confirm that TWO completely different Aperture 3 installations behave exactly as you describe. I have not dug into WHY this no longer works but it does not - volume name, mount point, partition name, device name, everything that comes to mind and meets the eye is identically but the masters remain off-line until you "reconnect'.
I cannot believe that Apple did this on purpose - I can assure you I have done this many many times in the past and it worked fine. If it is a mistake and should work let's hope it gets fixed - if it works like this on purpose I would love to know that possible rationale would make this make any sense whatsoever. This is a big big problem for multivolume libraries.
Does anyone's Aperture 3 installation let them do this?

Where to add new drives for best speed

I've got a G4 here, and I want to add a 300GB drive for video scratch data - obviously I'd like everything to be as fast as possible.
My question is, the front drive bay has ATA buses labeled ATA33 and ATA66, which I'm assuming mean it uses the lower speed ATA. On the other hand, the higher speed bus (ATA100) already has the main system drive plugged into it. Which location for my new drive will get me the best performance, on the same cable with the other drive, (ATA100) or on a second cable (ATA66)?

Not everyone realizes that the MDD has native large (48-bit) support on both the ATA-4 and ATA-6 buses.
What you may want, though, is an ATA or SATA controller if you want to create a scratch RAID.
the ATA-4 (ATA/66) bus is about 4% slower than ATA/100. I'm not sure if you will see the 65MB/sec that your new drive is capable of. But that has nothing to do with being ATA/100/133 or ATA-6 or ATA-7.
You could use the 300GB drive as boot + scratch drive, using the ATA/100 bus, and keep /Users/account on ATA/66 drive bus. Otherwise, if you already keep OS/Apps only on startup drive, and have data and media files on another drive/bus, you might want to look into (S)ATA controller.
There is an article (sticky) on MacNN Forum, under PowerMac, that lists what Macs have native support for 48-bit etc., very useful. The QS/2002 was the first PMac to support >137GB drives too.

Installing on new drive and copying files to it

I have a Macpro with a 500GB drive running 10.5.4 that contains the OS, applications and my media. I would like to put either a 1TB or 2TB drive into it and put Snow Leopard on it and transfer all of my data and files (almost 450GB) to the new drive.
1.) How do I install the new OS on the new drive after I swap it out with the old one?
2.) What is the best way to copy all of my media and files to the new drive after the OS is installed?

Put the new drive in and keep the old one as well.
Boot from the SL DVD and install it on the new drive.
Once you boot in SL for the first time, use the Migration Assistant to transfer your stuff. Point it to the old drive.
You could also clone your old drive on the new drive using Supper Dupper and then upgrade to SL. If it was me that's what I would do, because I don't like Migration Assistant. But it's your choice..

What Size Drive for Media Cache?

I'm about to edit a large project (5TB of 4K RED footage and counting) on a laptop and am intending to use the setup below for disks. Ideally I would have gone for a "4 disk" setup, but I've maxed out my eSATA connections and would have to use USB for anything else. If coincidentally you can see any problems with this configuration please let me know!

3x 2TB Drives in eSATA docking stations (Media, Projects)
Second internal hard disk (Previews, Media Cache, Exports)
I'm intending to install a second hard drive in my laptop to use for the Media Cache. What size/speed drive should be used for this purpose?

Perhaps only that the predominant holy grail on this forum is achieving a high PPBM score, not necessarily edit 4K.

In your case, since you don't seem to plan to have a relatively fast main media volume (e.g. an eSATA RAID0), a separate drive for media caching and database may have a performance benefit. The size of it depends on the size of your projects, how complex your project and timelines are, how much rendering they require. Usually even a small disk (under 100GB) will do just fine for the purpose; the current "sweet spot" is around 256GB SSD and 500-750GB 7200rpm mechanical drive.

Moving backups to new drive -- without using disk utility restore

I have done some research on this already but I don't believe I've found the solution. I just bought a new media / backup hard drive, and I've moved my itunes library (over 100 GBs) to this drive. Now I have researched how to move the time machine backups to this drive, and know you can't just copy the files.
The instructions I've received tell me to use the disk utility to restore the old time machine backup drive to the new drive, however if I do that won't I lose the iTunes stuff currently on that drive?
Is there an easier way to move that data without me transferring the iTunes back to my laptop, and then restoring through disk utility, and then re-transferring the iTunes again?

yes, you will. but it is also a VERY bad idea to keep other data on the same partition as the TM backup. first, this data will not be backed up by TM. if you value your itunes data you should have it backed up. also, TM is very buggy and there are too many situations when you need to delete existing TM backups and start from scratch. this should be done by erasing the entire TM partition. you should never delete any TM backups from finder. also, TM will eventually fill up the entire partition with TM backup. it will start bumping up against other data on the partition and you won't be able to put anything else on it.
the upshot is that you should make a separate partition just for TM. don't keep any other data on that partition. you can add a partition to the drive without disturbing your itunes data. type "create new volumes" in disk utility help to see how. however, that's not a good idea IMO as you'll have both the itunes data and the TM backups on the same physical drive. when the drive fails (and it will eventually) you'll loose everything.

Time Machine restore to new drive not even starting

I have a Macbook that came with Tiger. I upgraded a few months ago to Leopard and started using Time Machine - last time backed up about 10d ago.
Internal hard drive crashed and I installed a new one. I don't have my original Leopard media so I borrowed from someone else, thus can't install Leopard but can boot the machine from the CD.
When I go to utilities and select "restore from backup" (i.e. Time Machine) nothing, whatsoever, happens. It's as if I didn't even hit the button. I can see the contents of the TM disk so I know it's good. The new drive formatted fine too.
Am I going to have to get my Leopard disks (which are 50 miles away, thus not handy) and do this in two steps (first get a working Leopard install, then try to restore from TM)?

I'm in the same situation as the original poster, the leopard DVD is at work, and on a Saturday my laptop crashed. I get this "Unable to load XIPanel_RestoreIntroduction nib file" error and I'd like to know if others have been able to:
1) understand what this message is about, e.g. are there additional checks in the nib file or is it just not found?
2) work around the issue one way or another.
Apple making computers -- deterministic creatures of all, and not casinos I'm not fully satisfied with the idea that this is a gamble to work around the issue. Unless of course there is a list of "other issues" that's been published somewhere in which case I'll be grateful to not embark on a useless and ultimately doomed effort to get my mac to work.
