New DRIVES installed but only 1 listed (raid question)

I just upgraded from Adobe Premier Pro CS2 to CS4.  After installing it on my PC computer (XP) I also decided to upgrade my computer drives and memory.  My classroom in a book states that three drives are best.  Drive one is dedicated to the operating system and programs, drive two (the fastest drive) dedicatd to captured video and video previews and drive three dedicated to audio, misc. still images and exporting.
I told my computer tech what I wanted and yesterday I picked-up my computer with an invoice that read:
1 - EVGA GeForce GTX 260 Core 192 896MB 448-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 X 16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card
1 - Western Digital 250GB SATA 16MB 7200rpm 3.5" Hard Drive Raid with current 250GB
1 - Western Digital 1TB Caviar Green SATA 7200rp 64MB Hard Drive Windows Backup Drive
1 - 1 GB DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz 240-pin (total 3GB RAM)
1 - Rebit Backup Software Windows XP (required for XP)
1- Set-up Window XP RAID with backup software and drive
My tech told me that EVERYTHING would be saved to the 'C:' drive!
HERE'S MY QUESTION: When I booted-up my computer and checked 'my computer' I only saw one drive listed - The 'C:' drive. (WINXP).  Also listed was my 'E:' drive (DVD RAM Drive), a Rebit icon and two folder files (my documents and shared documents).
I expected to see 3 drives.  My tech told me that RAID means to connect the drives.
WHAT I NEED TO KNOW IS:
1 - What exactly doe RAID mean/do?
2 - Do I create FILE FOLDERS on my 'C:' drive for all my CS4 files?  Importing/Rendering/Backup/Scrath/Previews/Etc.
3 - SOMEONE OUT THERE PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO DIRECT MY CS4 FILES TO THEIR APPROPRIATE PLACES AND WHERE THAT IS.
THANKS
Tom

Bill...
I went back to my tech and told him what you said...he sent me this e-mail:
Ok Tom,  we will remove the RAID configuration drive so  that is has Drive letters.
You will loose the performance aspect: "RAID is a array of physical HDD's, and can be hardware, or software managed. The two main uses are for an increase in size (say two physical HDD's seen as one) and speed, as the reads/writes are spread over two HDD's, instead of one"
C:\ OS, programs and possibly the Windows Page File (Statically Managed)
D:\ Projects w/ Scratch Disks
E:\ Media
The 1TB will still be the BACKUP DRIVE, shown as Rebit.   You Only have access to that to recover data or System Disaster.
(Drive letters may be different than you listed)
As you may have noticed the speed of the storage and Scratch Disk is a BIG factor of the Adobe process!
The settings you and the tech are asking for are based on the old rules.
However,  since this is what you want I apologize for doing it the way adobe instructed us to do it for previous customers (who are happy with the RAID setup).  We will convert your drive to your request.
Please bring the machine back at your convenience (on a weekday) and I will have it done ASAP.  If I have it in the morning you wil have it by afternoon.
Again, the backup drive is a REBIT drive you will not have access to it other than for data or system restore.
My sincere applogies, Matt
BILL...should I leave my computer alone...do you agree with my tech?  Should I return it and have him do it according to what Adobe Classroom In A Book says?
Thanks again, in advance...
Tom

Indesign CS3, 5 and 5.5 are installed, but only CS3 will open. CS 5 and 5.5 versions seem to be opening but then "quit unexpectedly." Any ideas on how to get 5.5 to open and to be default version? Thanks!

OS 10.6.8, we are in a college marketing office, and another in the office has the same setup, also with the 3 versions of InDesign. He's not having this problem. This has been a problem on this iMac since 5 and then 5.5 were installed.
What happens is that when you open the applications from the dock or applications folder, 5 and 5.5 seem like they're opening, but then the "quit unexpectedly" message. Here are screen shots: Thanks for any clue to this odd behavior.

Not sure where you backup to.
ITunes keeps the latest backup only.
Icloud keeps the 3 last backup.

  • New Hard Disc Drive installed but is not recognised on reboot.

My Toshiba Satellite A200-1BW hard drive went (200gb, mk2035gss). I bought a new 500gb (mq01abd050) toshiba one and replaced it. After formatting it will not recognise the new drive. It goes through the formating process ok. on startup it says:-
"media test failure" then later:- "Windows could not complete the installation, To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation."
so far I have:- reinstalled/formatted many times. device manager in dos. disabled all network adapters and then restart. I do not have the option in BIOS to go from sata mode to compatability mode. Is this a Bios problem? mine is ISKAE BIOS VERSION V1.30 (26/32007). tried downloading new bios but appears not to work.
I have 2048mb of ram in the machine. windows vista ultimate.
I can boot up sometimes with the old drive which works for a while before freezing. I can attach the 500gb hdd externally via usb and it works fine. It has two partitions. 1.46gb WinRE and Vista. The old hdd 200gb has the same1.46gb and Vista. however when i use computer management the old hdd says the 1.46gb partition is healthy(EISA Configuration) and the new 500gb 1.46gb partition says healthy (primary partition), and the old hdd vista says healthy (system, Boot, Page file, Active, Crash dump, Primary partition). The new vista just says healthy (Active, Primary partition).
Is this the problem or is this simple because it has not configured everything yet as it has never booted from the new drive? How do i get the new drive to say system, boot etc....... the old drives 1.46gb partion has no name and i cannot open it to see what's in there. the new one WinRE i can open. it has boot.sdi and a folder  "sources". in that folder is a file boot.wim The files installed on the new drive look the same as the old drive as far as I can see.
in computer management i have made the new hdd default OS. If I reboot and go into system recovery options it lists the 2 drives. the old one says "microsoft windows vista"  the new drive says" windows vista (tm) ultimate (recovered)
CD drive may need replacing so if I need to use the recovery disc again I will need help making a USB flash drive to boot up as the one i tried did nothing. what other info do you need?

Hi! I'm not much help, but I seem to be the only one replying. I don't know Norton ghost 10. I use Macrium Reflect and I have always been able to restore my drive to just like the day I made the image. I have done it many times. Macriuum Reflect is my best friend. I just boot with the Linux based CD that you make on day one. I plug in my external USB. Macrium finds all my images and I just chose the date I want and in less than two hours I'm back up and running. I have never lost on bite of data and it has never let me down. I have no use for any thing Norton makes.
    Dokie!!
PS The screen shot shows all three partitions of my HD. I can chose any one partition or all three if I'm restoring to a new drive. This is all I know. I can also mount any partition and see what is on it with Macrium.
PS Here is all the files that are on my recovery partition.

  • I am installing snow leopard on a new drive unformatted but it does not show the disk to install it on.? do i need to format first with one partition?

I have installed a new drive on my mac book and more ram but the snow leopard install asks which to install the system on but then does not show the drive.
do I have to partition it and name it first. -- if so just one partition?

    Do this:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.

  • New HD installed, but how to install OS?

My trusty PB lost it's factory hard drive this week. I've installed a new Samsung 160GB drive. Unfortunately, I can't for the life of me find my original PB disks (it's been almost 4 years!) It was running 10.5.1 perfectly prior to the drive failure. It also ran 10.4 long-term.
I have retail versions of OS 10.4 and 10.5 family packs. I used these same disks to do system upgrades to the PB in the past.
10.4 runs the installer, but tells me it can't be installed on this machine. (Disk Utility successfully identifies, partitions and verifies the new Drive).
10.5 spits the disk out on boot-up.
I can't seem to successfully mount a disk from another machine over Firewire.
What are my options? I presume that one is to contact Apple for replacement disks - can't find ANY reference to that process on their site; a link would be greatly appreciated. Is inconvenient-hours Phone Support the only way to do it?
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the thought, Mark, but as mentioned, Disk Utility worked fine off the OS 10.4 install disk. Unfortunately, it wouldn't install anything, though.
I've solved the issue myself, so thought I'd post the answer for the benefit of others in the same situation.
Thankfully, I used Time Machine to archive the PBs hard drive after I installed the OS and software. I still had that November archive on a Firewire drive. I couldn't boot off the Firewire drive OR the OS 10.5 disk, however. But I COULD boot the PB in Firewire Target Mood (boot system while holding "T" key). So I did.
I then connected the PB to a MacPro via Firewire. The Intel vs. PPC mismatch meant I couldn't just do a system install onto the PB drive from the MacPro.
The MacPro is still running OS 10.4, so I had to boot the MacPro with the OS 10.5 install disk, then start Disk Utility and choose the Time Machine Restore function.
The PB drive was restored to the same state it was in in November, which meant I didn't need to re-install third party software or anything. I'm SOLD on Time Machine!

  • New RAM installed but System Profiler still seeing old RAM

    Hi
Recently put in a new hard drive after the last one failed. The new RAM, equaling 3GB, was installed on my iMac C2D 24" BEFORE the failure. I got it back from the shop today and checked to see if the RAM was still recognised. The System Profiler is showing 1GB or RAM, 512 in each slot, and the serial numbers match the RAM that came with the computer originally.
I'm running Snow Leopard and haven't noticed anything running slow. Is this just a glitch in the matrix?

So you are saying the original DIMMs are there plus the ones you added, all were recognized before the repair but only the Apple-supplied after the repair.
Just trying to keep all of this straight in my mind.
In that case, you might try removing the DIMMs you installed and reinstalling, one at a time and see if they are recognized. If they are not, then they may have gone bad for some reason, who knows why, and it is time to look at the warranty you have from the people from whom you purchased the DIMMs.
If it was someone like Crucial or OWC (macsales) they are really good about their lifetime warranty.
If the warranty is lifetime, contact the supplier and see what the process is for replacement.
It is strange that both would work, and then fail. But stranger things have happened with computers.

  • Cannot back up with Time Machine/Capsule after new drive installed in MacBook Pro

MacBook Pro 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running 10.8.5.
I just had a larger hard drive installed by Tekserve. This is to be my first back up since installing the new drive. I have 2 back ups: one to my Time Capsule via WiFi, the other to an external Le Cie via USB.
Time Machine just gives me preparing to backup but goes no further, just stuck in that mode. I suspect that it can't find my old drive, which it backed up till now. But I cannot find a way to correct this possible snafu. I do not see an option in Preferences.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

Just so we are clear.. were your files all recovered from backup after the install of the disk?? Did you supply one of the backups to the company who did the installation so they could do the recovery?
You do want to be careful not to damage the old backup.. it might really be better to start over a clean new backup.
TM should be reset. It sounds like they did recover your settings.. Please check Pondini here.
    A4 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Also use A1 to check what the log is saying about TM.. the old backup will need to be fully indexed and checked if you intend to keep using it.. and that will take several hours to the TC if you use wireless.. The problem people expect fast starts but that is not possible unless you are doing a new backup.
You can also check some of the other help files there eg D1 long preparing for why that happens.

    Hi Anne,
Your version of Safari is still supported.  Please see Adobe Flash Player | Tech specs for supported OS and browsers.
If the Flash Player plugin is in the Plug-ins (disabled) folder it's because it's an older version that Apple has disabled in Safari.  This has nothing to do with whether or not Flash Player supports the browser.
I'm not sure what you mean by "when i click on flash player itself i am told there is no application to open it."  Flash Player.plugin only works in the browser to view Flash content in the browser.  The plugin does not open files outside of the browser.  If you have SWF files you'd like to view outside of the browser, then you'll need the Flash Player projector. However, based on your previous comments this doesn't appear to be what you are trying to do.
Google Chrome does embed Flash Player in it, while Firefox does not.   Mozilla has also recently started blocking older versions of Flash Player in Firefox similar to what Apple is doing in Safari.
Following the 'clean install' instructions should result in you having the latest version of Flash Player installed that will not be blocked by the browser.

  • Cd Drive not working even after a new drive installed.

    Hello
About a month ago i had problems with my cd drive, it wouldn't burn a cd and every time i tried it sounded like the computer was going to take off! I took my computer to the genius' and it was supposedly fixed with a new disk drive put it. BUT i am still having the same problems! is there any way in which it may be a software issue as i am still having the same issues and they are actually getting worse!
    Please Help!
    Thank You!

You should go back to the genius who installed the new drive.  The repair will be under warranty.

  • Second hard drive installed but fails to appear in disk utility

I have installed the original 160GB into the second HD bay of my Dual 1.8 G5, and have had little success of it working. I say little success because one time (not the first time) it appeared on the desktop and I was able to view and run apps. from it. However, with each additional boot it has not been visible on the desk top, system profiler, or disk utility.
?Why did I install the original Hard drive in the second bay?
Just before leaving the country I sold my mother this computer, just before delevering the computer it crashed to catastrophie. She took the computer to
a certified apple repair facility, and they removed the drive, and installed a new drive in HD bay 1. In addition, they sold her an external firewire case that which the original drive could be installed in and therefore connected to the G5.
I would rather work through this problem than use the external drive, so Please Help.
    power mac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.4)

I am having the same trouble with my G5! You are not alone but I am also trying to get the answer to our problem.
Would someone please help us with this problem?

  • SetupApi.dev.log error message on driver install, but driver runs fine anyway... why?

    Hello,
I am trying to run down the cause of the following warning/error message I see in my SetupApi.Dev.log file after I install a commercially signed driver.
!    sig:           Verifying file against specific (valid) catalog failed! (0x800b0109)
!    sig:           Error 0x800b0109: A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which is not trusted by the trust provider.
I see this error against all the files in the driver package, but the driver operation has so far been just fine.
I have checked the certificate chain for the driver (there are 3 certificates in the chain: a root, an intermediate, and the code signing certificate I purchased, all from Verisign/Symantec), and compared the root and intermediate certificates against ones
that are already installed on the machine where I installed the driver.
Using the MMC, I can see:
     - the root certificate is located at:         Console Root->Certificates-Current User->Trusted Root Certification Authorities->Certificate
     - the intermediate certificate is located at: Console Root->Certificates-Current User->Intermediate Certification Authorities->Certificate
     - the code signing certificate is located at: Console Root->Certificates-Current User->Trusted Publishers->Certificates
This all seems to make sense to me for as much as I've been able to research from the MSDN, so would there be some reason why this message shows up, yet the driver seems to install and operate correctly anyway?
I am using VS 2012 Pro on top of Windows 7 (x64) Pro SP1 to perform the driver build and code signing.
Thanks much in advance for reading this, and for any insight/advice you might have about this.
    Geoff

    Hi Pavel, Jason, and Bryan,
I apologize for not getting back to this sooner, I got side tracked with a different task for a few days...
I really appreciate your looking at my problem.
I did some more digging and contacted VeriSign/Symantec for some assistance and learned
I had a few things set up improperly with respect to my code signing certificate.
VeriSign pointed me to a few links to straighten out my code signing certificate's chain of trust on
my code-signing machine, and then they also pointed me to a couple links similar to the one
Bryan provided here for the cross-signing certificate I needed.
The links are provided below for reference (in case somebody else can make some use of them too)
    1. Disable root cert, so my certificate's signing chain of trust shows up:
     https://knowledge.verisign.com/support/code-signing-support/index?page=content&id=SO16958&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US
    2. Get the correct intermediate certs insalled:
     https://knowledge.verisign.com/support/code-signing-support/index?page=content&id=AR1739&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US
    3. Get the correct X-signing cert from MSFT (same dert as the one Bryan provided in his link):
     https://knowledge.verisign.com/support/code-signing-support/index?page=content&id=SO16763&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US
     https://knowledge.verisign.com/support/code-signing-support/index?page=content&id=SO5820&actp=search&viewlocale=en_US
I'm building/signing this for Release, on a Windows 7 x64 platform. I am doing this using the
Windows 8 WDK and VS 2012 Professional. It's a nice combination, as it automates the driver
    signing process.
My driver is a package of files, and is signed with a CAT file.
I wanted to be sure the files were signed correctly, so I ran "signtool" over each file in the package
to verify the signing is correct. I've included the output from one of the files here. Save the filename,
the output is identical for each file in the package.
The signing certificate chain shown below matches my code-signing certificate chain when I examine it
    using the MMC-certificate snap-in.
The cross certificate chain shown below is identical to the output from the VS 2012 IDE. Note the MFST X-signing
certificate is in this chain from step 3 above, it's the second one from the top in the chain.

As best as I can tell, this follows the kernel mode signing walkthrough doc, and assuming
VS 2012 is doing the signing correctly, the driver package should have been signed correctly.
The problem is, I still see the same error on the target machine.
I've tried manually installing the code signing certificate in the target's Trusted Publisher Store,
prior to installing the driver, but this does not keep the error from showing up.
I honestly have no clue why. If the driver package files check out OK with the signtool on the signing
machine, I'm at a loss for why the error shows up on the machine where I'm installing the driver.
One other thing that is different is the code signing certificate's certification path When I insepct
it on the target machine. It appears to have a different Root and (only one) intermediate certificate.
The Verisign folks said this is "OK" because different machines have different certificates. I'm not
sure I'm buying this statement. Does it make sense to you guys?
The folks at VeriSign also told me I do not need ANY of the certificates used in signing the driver to
be installed on the target machine. Does this make sense to you guys? I'm a little skeptical about
that assumption too, but I haven't found any information on line to confirm or negate it.
I'm really no further along in determining why I'm getting this error on my target machines.
Does anything here look out of place to you?
I'm half tempted to manually sign the driver package to is there's something going on inside the VS 2012
IDE that could be causing this.
Again, thanks for taking your time to read this.

  • Mac Pro refuses to boot after new drive instalation...

    Hi
Could anyone shed a bit of light on my problem - Ive just got a new 500gb seagate drive, - when I load it up in order to format, im faced with a blank screen, and os x refuses to even think about booting up - there is also an odd click which Im guessing is the boot drive trying to start.
The new drive slots into place fine, and I made sure I was earthed out before touching it...
When the new drive is taken out, the system starts up without a hitch.
Do I have a duff drive? - or am I missing something blindingly obvious?
    Thanks for any help
    Maxine.

    Hi,
Funny that I saw this message, I am the person that had the exact same problem on the 20th of December.
After trying to install the HD, I had the problem as well. I ended up taking the computer in to my local Apple store, and they kept the Mac Pro.
It is now January 5th and I still do not have the system. Called them an hour ago and they said that the part (they didn't mention what it was) was on BACKORDER, so they had to decide if they were going to wait for the part or give me a brand new system. Hmmmm.... Could this be a NEW hidden problem for the Mac Pro now?
I wanted to purchase an iMac, but was afraid of the lock-up issues. I am starting to regreat my choice and wish I had got an iMac, at least I would have some kind of file server for my network
All I can suggest is to take it in to your local Apple store and let them check it, and then ask if they could fix it right then, or you two could have a system that's not able to be workable.
