New DSL connection prevents screen share, videochat

Previously, I was able to videochat and screen share with a remote computer using ichat. With that particular remote computer, I was never able to use vnc or finder-originated screen sharing, so I've always relied on ichat.
I switched from cable to Verizon's DSL internet service, and now I find that I can no longer screen share using ichat or use videochat. Sometimes my file sharing is also affected. I can also no longer access this screen from another computer from the finder, or access this computer as a file share from another computer.
I have enabled file sharing and screen sharing in the sharing panel. The remote computer also has screen sharing enabled. I have mobile me service, which syncs ok, and I can obtain a shared screen from my office computer, although this seems to be available only now and then.
Running ichat 4.0.8, OS 10.5.7 on both computers that I'm having trouble screensharing and videochatting between.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Todd

Hi,
I have seen one post that remarked that the end user thought Verizon were now blocking VNC connections and that their reasoning was to stop Internet attacks on Home computers.
Seeing this is a common method for large companies to update remote computers particularly with Windows and is part of Apple Remote Desktop, And, that on all computers it has to be set to be allowed, this did seem a bit lame.
If you know the IP addressing needed to get from home to your work computer then using vnc:// instead of afp:// in Connect to Servers will invoke the Screen Sharing App that is hidden away in Leopard in Hard Drive/System/Library/Core Services (I have only done this over my Local LAN and don't know how to set it up or address it over the internet)
Your extras clues only seem to partially support the idea that VNC connections are blocked.
If Video chat were not working as well I would look to whether the Modem is allowing Response to Internet (Anonymous) Pings as I know iChat sends a Ping in Video and Audio Chats (and the screen Sharing includes a Audio feed.)
I would have looked on this site for more clues http://portforward.com/routers.htm as some of the Instruction pages include pictures that can be helpful in some cases.
I don't see your model listed which may mean it is really new and has not made it to the list yet.
Defcom either compared them a chose the most likely access defaults or found the info elsewhere.
This one which may be the closest model number has no real pictures in this case
http://portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Westell/D90-740010-06/iCh at.htm
This page is from a D-Link emulator
http://support.dlink.com/Emulators/di624revC/advfilters.html
It is Advanced then Filters (The Yellow items)
Do you have anything like this on your device ?
Does anything appear to be set ?
In this Tools and Misc page it has UPnP and other options that may need to be allowed. (WAN Ping Blocking is on this page for this device and it also has VPN stuff)
These pages/links are for clues only as most manufacturers of modems and routers layout the pages differently.
My thinking is that it is either something like a Firewall or filter or similar on the modem that need "Unblocking" in some manner to allow UPnP to "Fully" function or the ISP is doing something that they are not being too open about.

  • Can't connect via Screen Share or Web Server, but can ping and ssh

Bit of an odd problem here.
My Mountain Lion Mac Pro (called "Trogdor" for convenience) is connected to my work university network. I can ping it from anywhere-- elsewhere on the network, from home behind a firewall. Can connect over ssh from everywhere. I can also connect to other computers (on the same network or at home behind a firewall) from Trogdor via ssh, Screen Sharing, etc.
But I can't Screen Share into Trogdor, and I can't connect to Trogdor's built-in web server, either system-wide (in /Library/WebServer) or for my username (~/Sites). (I can connect to the web server from Trogdor.)
Note that I can do both of these for other computers on the same network (same subnet, etc), so it's not a network issue. I can't do these from anywhere: same network or from home. I have this problem whether I use Trogdor's hostname or its IP address. (I can look up its hostname using the IP address with the "host" tool in Terminal, and vice versa.)
So it sounds like a port issue, right? Except I don't think I've ever messed with my port settings directly. How do I diagnose the problem? Should I scan my ports? Can I return port settings to default?
    Thanks!

  • New DSL Connection Troubles

I just had Comcast Cable Internet and switched to Windstream's DSL Internet. Everything was running smoothly before the switchover this afternoon. I am able to connect to the internet via Airport and by hardwiring to the modem and the router.....however none of my peripheral programs will connect (iChat, Mail, MSN Messenger, AOL IM...). They just spin and try and after about 2 minutes they stop and give me an error saying an internet connection was not established. I'm really confused as to how I can have an internet connection but yet not be able to access these programs. I did call Windstreams tech support and basically told me to call Apple and the issue isnt them. I told them that it worked fine in the morning when I had Comcast, and when I came home to WIndstream is when the problems started! Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Kelly:
I'm a little confused, does safari work?

  • I was using a neighbor's wifi temporarily.  Now that I have my permanent DSL connection, my wifi connects automatically to my neighbor's  wifi.  How can I change it to access my new DSL connection?

I was using a neighbor's wifi temporarily.  Now that I have my own wifi, my Macbook continues to hook up with my neighbor's.  How can I change it so that it automatically hooks up with my wifi?  I have no problem with the connection.  It is just a pain to continually change to my wifi.

You need to go into the Preferences for the your WiFi and remove your neighbors from the list or move it below yours so that it will connect to yours first.  System Preferences (Accessed through the Apple in the Upper Left Hand Corner) > Network.  Then click on WiFi in the list on the Left hand side of the window and then click on Advanced button in the lower right hand corner.  You will then get the list of all the wireless networks that have been joined and in the order they were joined from oldest to newest.  Find the one in the list and either drag it below your network, or click on it and then press the "-" button to remove it from the list totally and then from that point on it should start connecting to your WiFi first automatically.

  • I'm trying to use Mountain Lion Server so my family can have separate logins via Screen Share to their iTunes.

Using Mountain Lion Server so my family can have separate logins and connect via Screen Share.
Works great, each has their own home directory and permissions are perfect.
Now setting up iTunes for each with their own Library (not shared), thus keeping multiple Libraries.
    I get this;
This Computer is already associated with an Apple ID.
If you download past purchases with your Apple ID, you
cannot auto-download past purchases with a different
    Apple ID for 90 days.
    What!
So what it is on the same computer, they are completely separate Libraries never to be mixed.
If this works, I only need to keep one computer up and running, instead of three.
Each can do their syncing/backup and connect to the various Airplay/AppleTVs I have around the house.
    How do I fix this.
    Thanks

Bottom line is you can't - easily.
You need to make sure that you log out of the server each time otherwise the ID is running. To explain, if you had a laptop with different people using it, your solution works fine. Each time someone logs in, the iTunes ID is different so it works as you can only have one person using the laptop at any one time.
Now, turning your problem inside-out, you want people to be able to log into iTunes concurrently to use their own version of the program with their own library. This does not seem to work and you get the conflicted ID error message. Even though iTunes is running under their own login ident, I have never been able to get this working reliably and was told that iTunes is NOT a network-aware application as it is designed to be single user.
The way I got around this was to login as XYZ and to make sure that the ID was changed in iTunes accordingly. However, it did not always work so I gave up with the whole thing.

  • Cannot Maintain Stable Screen Share Connection New MacBook Pro

I am having some difficulty maintaining a stable screen share connection. It just keeps disconnecting and reconnecting. It has nothing to do with my network as I have tested it from 5 machines and it's only this one.
Has anyone else experienced this with the new MacBook/ MacBook Pro's?
    I have  MacBook Pro - 15" 2.53Ghz/4GB RAM/320GB @ 5400RPM
    Thanks,
    Dean

A little update. I have found what caused this.
When my MacBook Pro was trying to Screen Share to my iMac it would ONLY drop out when connected to this particular machine. The iMac is a 24" Aluminum 2.4Ghz it is running @ 1920 x 1200 with a 23" Apple Cinema Display connected to it @ 1920 x1200.
When I mirror the display the screen-share connection stays stable. Only when I change it to Extended does this issue occur. I am wondering if any other users have experienced this? Possibly it could be a bug in the OS as it doesn't like multiple displays during screen share.

  • Does video chat on the new Messager on Mac allow screen share or multiple people?

does video chat on the new Messager on Mac allow screen share or multiple people?
i noticed they said that facetime will basically be taking over video calls on the mac and that Messager will take over ichat, but i'm worried they're going to drop all the nice features they had on ichat, like being able to share screens while video chatting with someone. or being able to chat with 2 people at once on a video call.
has anyone downloaded the beta of this yet and tried it out? i'm very curious

    Hi,
You can start a Video chat with one Buddy and then chose Screen Share and providing you and the Buddy are using UPnP to open ports it will instantly convert to a Screen Share.
A Screen Share is only 1-1 and is technically an Audio Chat +
The Plus bit is an VNC connection alongside the Audio Chat.
This VNC connection uses a random port - hence the need to use UPnP to open the ports in the router (Or Port Mapping Protocol) in  Apple Base Station.
There used to be Add-ons that allowed the Desktop as Video Feed which would have been a sort of Screen Share but none of these have been updated for Lion.
An Example is iUSBCam  (ShowMacster was another - My link no longer works)
CamCamX maybe a possibility if it works in Lion  (It does say it neess iUSBCam for iChat)

  • Screen Share connection problems

I have an iMac and a MacBookPro on my home network. I used to be able to share screens between them quickly, trivially, painlessly. For a while now, though, it never (or rarely) works. Not sure, but possibly began after I upgraded to Snow Leopard.
    Setup:
    Snow Leopard on both computers
ADSL Modem -> Airport Extreme -> Wireless connection to MBP and iMac. (both are within seven meters of the Airport Extreme
    What happens?
I'll try to connect and it just says "establishing connection" forever. Eventually it might say "Connection Failed" but not give any other diagnostic.
Everything else works ok -- shared time capsules, access to the internet, etc.
Advice on how to debug this problem? I tried it last night w/ a brand new MacBook, and had the same issues.

Make sure that both ends are set to Screen Share (as in, receiving), and make sure both can "see" the other.

  • Can't connect to mac mini leopard shares or screen share

i'm having problem connecting to a mac mini that is on my network (running leopard 10.5.8) and is wired to the network via an AEBS.
previously when my MBP was also running 10.5.8 i had no problems using screen sharing and connecting to 2 shares on it using "afp://10.x.x.x/sharename", or browsing to them via finder.
i did a clean install of SL on the MBP and now even though the mac mini shows up in finder, when i select it it just sits there trying to connect and eventually the beach ball appears and fails saying it can't connect to it.
when i try to connect to the shares using command-K, again it won't connect to the shares.
if i try to connect to them using the samba share that is also configured on the mac min then is does connect to them.
i can ping the mac mini using network utility.
any ideas what the problem is? everything worked fine before i wiped and installed SL.

    HI,
Make sure screen sharing is turned on and you have set up sharing permissions on the computer whose screen you want to share.
    To set up screen sharing:
Choose Apple menu > System Preferences and click Sharing.
    Select the Screen Sharing checkbox.
To specify who can share your screen, select one of the following:
All users: Select this if you want to allow any user with a user account on your computer to share your screen.
Only these users: Select this if you want to restrict screen sharing to specific users.
Click Add + at the bottom of the Users list and select a user from Users & Groups (accounts you have set up in Accounts preferences), Network Users (users on your network), or your Address Book. Or click New Person and enter a name and password to create a sharing account. Then select that user from the list and click Select.
Click Computer Settings and set the following options:
Anyone may request permission to control screen: Select this to allow anyone on your network to request to share your screen.
VNC viewers may control screen with password: Select this and enter a password that VNC viewer applications can enter in order to control your screen.
It’s recommended that you not set a password if you only share this computer’s screen using the built-in screen sharing viewer in Mac OS X.

  • Screen Share for Brand New Mini Server

    Hello all,
just unpacked the brand new Mac Mini Server and don't know what to do. We all work on laptops in my studio so have no keyboards to use with the thing. I haven't turned it on yet, but is there a way to immediately go into remote screen sharing so I can configure it etc? Thanks for any tips that keep me from having to go dig up a keyboard!

    Hi
Do you see an option to Screen Share on a client mac?
With the MacMini there should be two disks. One of them is for installing the Server Administration applications. Install these on a client mac - must be 10.6. Once installed launch Server Admin. Switch on your MacMini and connect it to the network. Good idea to have DHCP running somewhere. Presumably whatever you're using for your Router/Firewall? Make a note of the MacMini's Serial Number (first 8 characters) Launch Server Admin and dismiss the authentication prompt. Select "Set Up Remote Server" from the Server Admin Menu.
It should be fairly obvious from there - hopefully?
    HTH?

  • Cannot screen share or connect to update server.

I have a MBP and I'm having problems. My laptop connected to the wifi, i have internet and it works. Up until yesterday i could screen share with my mac mini but all of the sudden its stopped working, it also won't allow me to connect to the software update server, if i connect to my neighbours (legally) it connects to the update server but at home it wont, i have tried turning of my router but it still doesnt work. I have anothe MBP in the house that can do all of the listed functions, its just this one laptop.
    Thanks,
    Ben

Just thought I would give this a bump. I recently transferred over to a new computer (I did not import/migrate settings, I reentered them. No longer can I VPN into work. Running 10.5.7 I have entered in the correct DNS settings and the domain. No errors, it says I am connected but I cannot contact any servers or file share. Any thoughts?

  • Messages screen share connection issues

    Greetings.
I have three Macs:  a MacBook Pro (mine)  at site A, and two iMacs at site B (friends).  All three have Mountain Lion.  All three have their firewall turned off.
I am seeing strange issues when trying to screen share.  I can share my screen, but I cannot successfully request to see theirs - connection/port issue.
Also, if they attempt to share their screen from their side: no go.
Why would it work one way but not another?  Is there a port being blocked on either of the two site's routers?

I finally isolated what the problem was after several days of trouble shooting this problem. I am not going to go into any trouble shooting specifics, but here is what the solution was:
    1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences.
    2. Choose View > Sharing.
    3. Click the Firewall tab.
    4. Click New.
    5. Choose VNC from the Port Name pop-up menu.
    6. Click OK and close system preferences
I am really befuddled as to why I only had to use this solution on the G3 Tower B/W since it had Mac OS X 10.4.11 installed on it just like two other Mac’s my local network.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Quit and relaunch Mail, and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Suddenly can't connect to shared computers or screen share

For some reason I can no longer connect to my shared computers. I can however connect to MY computer from my shared computers, if that makes sense.
From my own computer, when I go to my shared list in the finder, I click on a computer (normally it all automatically connects because I have the password remembered), I click "connect as" and I never get any response, sometimes a "connection failed" I know file sharing is enabled on all computers.
Is there a way to refresh my list? What can I do to reconnect to my shared computers? This seems to have been happenings since I last updated the OS.
Also, I can no longer do a screen share where I was doing this regularly every day.
    Thanks
