New dsl modem; existing Airport Network

I'm trying to replace the dsl modem I rent monthly from Centurylink with a DSL router I own.  I already have a functioning Airport (AEBS) wireless network.  Can I simply unplug the current modem that I'm using and plug in the modem I own?  I want the network to just stay the same.  Just to be clear:  I have a functioning DSL modem and Airport Network.  Can I swap out one modem for a new one without having to reconfigure anything?

Maybe ...
Anytime you change networking hardware, it is always a good idea to perform a complete power recycle of your networking components.
I would recommend that you do the following as a minimum:
Power-down the modem, AirPort base station, and computer(s).
Disconnect the AirPort base station from the Internet broadband modem.
Power-up the modem; wait at least 10-15 minutes to allow it adequate time to initialize.
Power-up the AirPort base station; wait at least 5-10 minutes. Note: The AirPort's status light may continue to flash amber after it has intialized. That is because, there may be some additional configuration items necessary, like setting up wireless security, before the overall setup is completed to get a green status.
Power-up your computer(s).
Since you did not make any configuration changes, the AirPort base station should broadcast the same Wi-Fi network with security settings as before. Network clients, connected to the base station either by wire or wireless, should now be able to access the Internet through the ISP's modem. Once Internet connectivity has been verified, you can use the AirPort Utility to configure the base station for wireless security and any other desired options. Please post back your results.

  • Power backup for dsl modem and Airport Extreme

Does anyone here have backup power for a dsl modem and Airport Extreme that is successful? I have a name brand power backup and when the power goes off both the dsl modem and Airport Extreme remain on; however, the network connection is lost so the fact that they remain on doesn't help. I have been unable to find anything about this problem on the internet generally and consultation with a well-known squad person has not helped. Any thoughts about this will be welcome.

Yes, I agree. But since the backup power keeps the modem powered, why doesn't the dsl connection continue? The squad person I talked with told me that the speed with which the backup power units replace power during an outage is about the same across different backup brands/units (I don't recall the speed but it was in milliseconds) and should be quick enough to retain the dsl connection. Doesn't happen.

  • Unable to connect wirelessly to new DSL modem - HP Deskjet 3050A - HELP!

I have a HP Deskjet 3050A J611g - I've had it a little more than a year (so out of warranty) and it has also been connected wirelessly to my HP laptop and other devices without any issues.  Last month I had to get a new DSL modem from AT&T (the brand is PACE and the model is 4111N).  Ever since getting the new modem my printer will not maintain a wireless connection.
I worked with AT&T tech support just after getting the modem and they were able to get me connected (they had remote access to my computer - uninstalled, reinstalled drivers, etc.) but within a few days I lost the wireless signal and cannot get it restored.  I have worked with AT&T tech support for more than 10 hours - several different reps - and still not working.  I have researched the issue myself, tried all of the troubleshooting steps provided by HP and others.  I'm at a loss.  My printer works if connected to my laptop with a usb cable but not wirelessly.
All my other devices are able to connect wirelessly to the modem, just not the printer.  I'm at my wits end!  What is left to try other than paying HP support for their assistance?

Access your router and make sure that MAC Filtering is turned off.  Also, set the encryption type to WPA2-PSK (AES) only as HP printers don't work well with the TKIP encryption type, and set the Mode to 802.11g only as that is the Mode that HP printers work best with.  Being on channel 11 shouldn't hurt anything unless there is a device that uses the same channel in the area then you might get some interference.  Give these things a shot, and let me know what happens.

  • Troubles with new DSL modem (moto 3260)

    Folks,
My old 2wire died and I picked up a Motorola 3260 from ATT....been reading a lot of articles on these boards but I'm stymied trying to get this to work with my Airport Extreme (and MBP on Mountain Lion)
I actually seemingly had the Modem-Airport-Computer connection working for a few minutes, but the connection quickly fell apart and I'm busy trying to methodically put it all backk together.
    1) Reset modem and pulled power. Put modem back in non-bridged mode. Got new DSL password from ATT. Attached directly to computer through ethernet cable. Works!
    2) Put modem into bridged mode. Cycled power on modem and computer. Set computer to "DHCP with manual address" so I could directly access the modem's settings pages. Verifed that modem showed up in bridged mode.
    3) Set computer to DHCP (without manual adress)....renewed lease.....shut computer down and powered back up. Created PPPoE service on computer to see if I could get that working first before doing the same thing with the Airport....but this failed to connect! NOTE: I had gotten this working yesterday a few times, but not today.
So, this is the main issue....I can't seem to get PPPoE working via my computer to DSL modem directly, or when I use the AIrport to DSL modem.
If anyone has any pointers or advice, I would REALLY appreciate it!!!
    Thanks!
    Tom

    Sorry for the difficulties.
I have used the Motorola 2210 for a number of years with rock solid performance. The modem is not exactly in Bridge Mode....it is set to PPPoE is on the computer or router.  I do not know if the 3360 has that option.
It appears as if the 3360 has replaced the 2210....I have not tried a 3360 yet.
I use an Airport Extreme which is configured to provide the PPPoE connection service. No special setup, or hidden settings, etc. Been running fine for 4+ years.
Not sure why you are having so much trouble, when it appears that you are doing everything right.
You may have already thought of this, but it is possible to run PPPoE on the modem, and have the AirPort Extreme connect using "Ethernet".  That will create a Double NAT error, but this is usually not serious, and AirPort Utility provides you with an option to "ignore" the error, so you get a green light, and not flashing amber.
I have run the network this way from time to time if for no other reason than experiment. The Double NAT does not seem to affect anything noticeably....unless you are using online gaming or other things that will not tolerate a Double NAT.
One of the advantages of using Double NAT is that you can bring up the modem settings simply by typing in the 192.168.1.254. Of course, if the network is running OK, there is not much reason to do this.
I'm not recommending that you use the Double NAT setup, but it might be worth a try to see how you like it...or if it works.  Post back if need a few tips on this.

  • Need help!! for DSL Modem to airport

My brother (hes in SC I'm in NY) called looking for help and I can't figure this situation out. SO I'm here for all the help here
He has DSL line. Into a modem that is all a DHCP NAT distributer. He has an Airport Extreme dual band and wants to set it up so the Guest network works. It is currently setup in Bridge mode.
So far I have failed in figuring this out. If we turn off the DSL modem as DHCP, and setup the Airport to be a DHCP - it doesn't have the internet. We haven't even gotten to the Guest part yet.
I know I'm asking a lot but is there some setting I'm missing?
Once DSL modem set to not be DHCP, so I use the Airport WAN port or still just into and ethernet port?
Thanks. I am posting this first before I goggle. Thissite usually faster and right.

I would think that the Gateway device (combo modem/router) might have an option to reconfigure it as a bridge, but without any information on the exact make/model of this device I can't offer much advice. Most non-AirPort routers typically use a web-based interface for administering them.
The AirPort must have NAT enabled for it to provide a Guest network. Only one option; Connection Sharing = Share a public IP address, will do so.

  • G4 does not detect existing Airport network

Following a physical move to another room my G4 does not recognize any network, including an existing Airport Extreme. My G5, also in the same room as the G4 does recognize the Airport and other networks.
I rechecked the airport card in the G4 to ensure it didn't come loose. Still no luck.
I have an Airport Extreme (g), with an Airport Express being used as a network extender.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Dave

Assuming that the card is recognized by the iMac, one or more of the following is true:
The antenna wire has came loose from the card. If the card is an AirPort Extreme card, verify the antenna wire connection using the photos in KB 108039, Properly attaching the antenna on an AirPort Extreme Card.
    The antenna wire is damaged.
The RF section of the card has failed.

  • Replacing BT (UK) DSL Modem for Apple network

I have a BT DSL modem which thankfully has disappeared in a cloud of smoke. Any advice on its replacement ie an easy box to replace it. The box is DSL in and then Ethernet to my Aiport Express network (3 express'), simple but seemed to work well. When you google this topic you are immediately in PC land and I am lost, Draytek and Zoom appear a lot. All help appreciated.
    Thanks

this morning was no change, a phone to BT, she was to call back 10mins later after speaking to the engineering department.
1+ Hours waited and i had to call them myself again, (maybe indian call centre minutes are not the same as GMT minutes) the chap i spoke to looked through the notes and told me they have identified a problem with the connection/line and they will look at it today and call me back tomorrow morning.
I have just done a check and my IP is still saying 15.9mbps max speed and was connection just short of this, with a 10mbps upload speed which i connected at 8mbps,
so things are slowly improving or setting been corrected, but 15.9 mbps is half what i had before the DSL router been replaced
i'll update tomorrow when they have rung me back

  • Using Time Capsule With Existing Airport Network

    Hi All,
I already have an Airport connection and would like to setup TimeCapsule on that network. Do I need to plug in an ethernet cable? Will it conflict with my existing airport base station?
    Thanks in advance,
    Tim

    Hi All,
I went through the setup on the Airport Utility but honestly I'm very confused as to how to set this up. It's being recognized by the Aiport utility but when I got to configure it, the airport utility says "Please make sure your Apple wireless device is plugged in and in range of your computer or connected via Ethernet and try again. (-6753)" I've connected it to my Ethernet port even though I thought I shouldn't have to and it still gives me this message. Thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!!

  • Got the new dsl modem/router combined now having latency issues

We had the old little black westell modem and it died on me i had a tech out last wendsay he gave me the new dsl router and modem in one. Anytime anyone else is on the internet and I'm trying to play a game on my computer my latencey will go from 100 to 1700 in a second and stay up there til someone else logs off their computer. Now i'm wonder is there a way i can fix this or can i get a another westell modem we never had that problem. This modem also dc's all the time i have to reset it a couple of times a day.

Have Verizon check your line and make sure it is not out of sync. Run a speed test too, and make sure you're getting the correct speed you had before the Westell died. Verizon doesn't give out Westell "Netgear" Gateways or modems anymore - Only ActionTecs or D-Links.

  • New Mac Mini - Existing Wireless Network - Can't Connect

I have an existing wireless network that works fine with an iBook G3. I just hooked up my Mac Mini and it can see the network, but it can't connect. The menu of available networks on the Mac Mini is also much more limited than that of the iBook. Is there an interference issue? If yes, why does the iBook working?

  • Remove non-existant AirPort network

Many versions of iTunes ago I set up an airport network using an airport express called Mandy. Many quarter notes later I'm using AirPlay and all of my iOS devices and iTunes 10.1 are showing Mandy as one of the options for AirPlaying. But when I launch AirPort Utility there is no Mandy to be found because Mandy (the airport express) has stopped functioning.
Can anyone tell me how to get rid of Mandy, the airport network/device which still shows up on my AirPlay options along with my AppleTV 2? Can't find anything in iTunes Prefs, AirPort utility reveals nothing and I can't even phrase something that Google or Forum Search returns as remotely useful.
    Thanks

does Mandy appear in system preferences > network > airport > advanced > airport under +preferred networks+ ?

  • BellSouth Alcatel DSL Modem and Airport Extreme

I have a new iMac, and BellSouth DSL Internet service (alcatel modem). I get an Internet connection when connecting the modem directly to iMac using an ethernet cable. However, when I try to configure my Airport Extreme 1 of 2 things happens: a constantly blinking amber light, or a green light. In neither instance does Airport Utility see Airport Extreme (even when the light is green). I have tried powering off and recycling both Airport Extreme and the modem, with neither solving the problem. Any thoughts?

The modem is a Speed Touch Home.
wow, I used one of those 8 years ago I did not know they still being used. If I remember correctly it did not have integrated pppoe or pptp client so it requires you to run a pppoe or pptp client on your mac. Therefore when connecting it to an apple airport basestation you have to configure the pppoe client in the base station.
so open your airport utility select your base station , choose manual setup
the click the 'internet' icon in the toolbar of the airport utility window and from the connect using drop down choose PPPoE, then configure it with your isp login details. The click the update button.

  • Which Ethernet DSL Modem for Airport Extreme?

I was lucky enough to receive an Airport Extreme Base Station for Christmas and would like to know opinions and experiences with DSL Ethernet Modems and which are compatible. Most seem to have a download bandwidth limit of 8Mbps which is what I currently receive but eventually I would hope to get a higher speed without having to replace the modem again.
I currently have a Netgear DG834PN wireless router/modem which has a WAN port. Until I get a new modem would it be possible to connect the Airport Extreme to this after turning off the router side on the Netgear? If this is possible is this a better solution to buying a modem or will I benefit from just having a dedicated modem.
Thanks in advance for any replies and Happy Christmas.

As a disclaimer, I reside in New Zealand, but the findings should still bear relevance.
I have used Alcatel (also marketed under the 'Thomson' name) ADSL modems for the last 7-8 years, and haven't had an issue. One of the reasons I choose Alcatel is they are the leading manufacturer of the DSLAMs which sit on the ISPs side of the connection.
We've just upgraded from an Alcatel One Touch Pro to a Thomson SpeedTouch 546(i) v6, and I'm very impressed. Testing shows the modem syncs at a higher speed than other brands such as D-Link, Netgear, etc and is more tolerant of line noise. I've never experienced the drop outs which certain brands featuring the Texas Instruments AR7 chip do - for more on this, take a look here.
I recommend talking to your more tech savvy neighbours and friends (preferably using the same ISP) and see what their experiences are.

  • Adding an Airport Express to existing Airport Network- Help!

There is an Airport Extreme Base station upstairs "hard wired" (ethernet) to a G-5 Tower. There is a MacBook downstairs in the kitchen and it does not get a good connection. We are trying to add an Airport Express as a relay. I have followed the prompts on the Airport Setup Assistant. It recognises the new station gets all the way to the last screen and then can not be added because of "radio interference/conflict" something to that effect. (Sorry I do not have the exact working from the screen.)
Does any one know of an step by step intruction guide in setting up an Airport Express as a relay??
All the Apple manuals and articles say is to follow the on screen prompts. There does not seem to be a specific instruction guide.

    Duane thanks for your help.
Well I think so. We do see it in the list of available networks in the menu bar.
I think I will try and set it up in the same room as the base station. Does that make sense?

  • Installed a new DSL router, now AirPort won't work

My DSL router started dying a few days ago. The tech from my provider came right out and replaced it; the wired connection to my MacBook Pro is fine, and the wireless connection to the old iBook G4 via AirPort initially worked OK, but now the house wifi name won't even show on the menu.
When the new router was programmed, it was set to "Enable DHCP Server".
The router is a Comtrend ADSL. I'm logged onto it now, and the settings at the "Management" control panel DHCP are "enable" and "disable". Is there anything I should change there?
Under "Access Control", I'm shown a table headed "Feature/root/support/user/apuser" with category titles like "account access", "wireless - basic", and "wireless - advanced", and under the "account access" category, there are popdown menus with choices "none", "LAN", "WAN" and "both". Is there anything I need to change there?
Any ideas? I'm kind of feeling my way through this, so apologies in advance if nothing makes any sense.
Machines involved in this fracas are a G4 iBook, an Intel MacBook, an iPad2, and a couple of iPhones. Main wired connectivity is OK on a MacBook Pro, which is probably snickering smugly as I type this.
    Thanks in advance,

almost all Netgear routers have a firewall. So log into the router. Username Admin and password is probably password. If not these days they print in on the bottom of the router. Check the ports used for mail are not blocked.
