New DVD Burner

Hi All,
I have installed a new Sony "DVD RW DW-Q120A" to my antique G4 350 yikes with hopes of installing 10.4 from the DVD disk. After installing the Sony DVD, I threw in a movie DVD and it was read just fine. I then tried to load my 10.4 DVD and got the continual spinning noise from the DVD drive and nothing showed up on the desktop. I also tested my 10.3 DVD disks that I got with my iBook. I was able to load the 10.4 DVD onto my iBook (G4) so I know the 10.4 DVD is good.
I called apple support and was told that they don't support my yikes machine any further due to its age.
Any thoughts or suggestions to get 10.4 loaded onto my yikes machine? Should I try loading 10.3 first then load 10.4? The yikes machine is also one of the few that you can't start from a firewire device.
Cheers,
Mike

Hi, Mike!
This doesn't address the optical drive read issue, but it may assist in getting Tiger installed via FW Target Disk Mode.
The Yikes can't be used as the target, but it will work as the host computer with the iBook used as the target.
Please review the FW TDM procedure in Apple Article linked above, then try this:
1. Insert the install DVD into your iBook.
2. Start the iBook while holding down the t-key.
3. Connect the two computers with a firewire cable.
4. Boot the G4 while holding doen the Option-key to get to the Startup Manager.
5. In Startup Manager, select the install DVD as boot drive for the G4 and boot to it to install.

  • New DVD burner not working w/iTunes

Okay, I've been working on this and digging through these forums for awhile now. I'm still stumped. So here we go:
I had a new DVD burner installed. I'm using Nero software which works fine for DVD, data, etc. However, iTunes gives me the "disc burner or software not found" message if I try to burn a disc from iTunes.
I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes (yes, latest version) twice now. No go.
In edit>preferences>advanced>burning CD burner: still shows the old CD-RW.
iTunes will recognize and play prerecorded CDs and ask if I want to import them.
In help>diagnostics>CD/DVD drive tests, after putting in a prerecorded CD as requested: Optical drive detected IS the correct device (D: ASUS DRW-1814BL) BUT I get a red dot with "no audio CD found" yet the songs are showing in the device window (in actual iTunes behind the diagnostic window).

I have uninstalled all virtual drive software, including Daemon Tools, PowerISO, and MagicDisc.
I have followed the article pointed out in an earlier thread involving editing the registry to remove 3rd party filters.
Okay... that's as much info as I can think of. Help?

Do you by any chance have Daemon tools? They are know to cause drive recongnition problems with this error number.

  • Can anyone recommend a  New DVD burner compatible with Retrospect?

I'm hoping some more experienced users can help me find a new DVD burner for my trusty old G4 (Dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4 - mirror doors).
My original Superdrive still functions, but has become a little erratic at times (and is a tad slow - like me), so I'm considering a new external burner (Firewire preferred). I've located a new LaCie drive (22x, DVD-DL, lightscribe, etc etc) model reference 301484U, but I cannot determine if it is Retrospect compatible.
As a Graphic Designer, I've built up over the years a very large Retrospect archive of all my work & clients files (several hundred CDs & DVDs), to which I must retain access. I checked the EMC (Dantz) web-site, but the burner is not listed, so I don't know if it is or is not compatible, just not tested.
I decided to go with an external/firewire drive in the hope that when I do buy a new Mac Pro I can switch it over to the new machine.
I suppose as an alternative, if I could find an external version of whatever model Superdrive is included in the current Mac Pros, that would more than likely work with Retrospect.
I would appreciate any suggestions/comments or recommendations

In the past year I have bought a Pioneer for my old G4 and a LG for my MacPro at Best Buy when they have been on sale. No problems, easy installs. If you need more detailed/user experiences check out the drive database at:

I just installed a new Pioneer DVR-112D DVD burner but when I try to burn a DVD with iDVD 4 it will not burn a DVD. It looks like iDVD 4 will get to stage 4 of the process but it will not finish burning the DVD. Can anyone help me out?

  • Buying A New DVD Burner and putting It in This ...... ?

Could you put a new DVD Drive/ Burner in a 2000 G4 Powermac with 10.1.5 OS
864MB Ram 30Gb HD. It has only a CD-Rom in it now. The Processor speed is 466Mhz. So getting a new drive would help or would it not work ?
Also would this LACIE D2 Dvd+-RW double Layer drive Firewire work on this computer ? it says on the box MAC OS X 10.3.2 Or Higher.
I want to install Tiger On it, and its only the DVD install, and do not really want to order the CD Set Up disks, and it would be good to have a DVD player on it anyway. Thanks

    Sure.
16X DVD-/+ DVR-111 or ND-3540, under $40 online newegg.com & others...; in early G4's such as yours, you don't need to remove the drive tray faceplate, so it's a simple job. You can search the KB for customer installable parts, to get a pdf or video directions should you need them.

  • Best New DVD Burner for a G5

My DVD Burner seems to have died and I'm wondering if anyone can advise on best replacement. I'd love to be able to burn DVD 9's.
    Thanks

Have you figured out the reason why your computer becomes unstable after having a disk in the drive?
I am having the same exact issue; after having disks in the DVD drive (PLEXTOR DVDR PX-800A:) they will not eject; I've tried using the eject command in the terminal, and using the "Open Superdrive" menu option.
I've also tried ejecting from Disk Utility but that will freeze the application. I can't force quit the Disk Utility application or even relaunch the Finder. The only way around is to go a hard reboot by holding down the power button.
Every time a disk is in the drive I have to force reboot, this is fast becoming a major issue, the computer works flawlessly otherwise.
I've read that it can be anything from bad RAM to a bad MB. Also, one last item to note, not sure if they're related but I tend to think so. When attempting to boot into the Hardware Test startup disk, the computer goes to the little wrist watch and never stops counting the minutes.
This will also occur when using the boot manager to select a start up disk even without the DVD in the drive, so its not limited to the DVD selection. The computer again needs to be rebooted and I have to select a startup disk from the startup preference pane. Of course the Hardware Test disk does not show as a startup option.
So, this is more than just an eject DVD issue, sounds more complicated than that. Also, just thought I'd mention the drive has been installed for over a year without issue, so its not due to a new piece of hardware.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • New DVD burner and iMovie

How can I do to set an external DVD burner to work with iDVD (different from the internal-default that the computer original brought)

If you are using iDVD4, you can install a "Easter Egg" that allows you to save your DVD to a disc image rather than burning it directly to a DVD. Once you have the disc image you can use Toast or other disc burning tools to create a DVD using your external burner.
    Full instructions are here:

and you will find the files you need here:

  • For all you folks trying to install a new DVD burner with no luck

I just bought a Panasonic UJ 841 for my Toshiba A100. It contains BOTH master and slave firmware. I installed the drive and like most of you it disn't see the drive in the BIOS. I contacted the guy in Taiwan who I bought the drive from and he showed me the slickest trick I have seen in a while. You DO NOT NEED TO FLASH THE FIRMWARE TO MAKE IT A SLAVE DRIVE.  Here is his fix and photos telling you how to deal with the problem. I take no responsibility if you screw up your drive doing this. It requires no soldering. It worked for me like a charm. This is for your information only. If you do it you do it at your own risk. (which is very little).

I just bought a new dvd-burner. At the first boot I noticed a lot of messages along the lines of:
    ata2 exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen
and an extremely long boot time. 3 to 5 minutes. When finally booting in to system the drive seems very sluggish to mount. Should I disable sata and pata in mkinitcpio? Is my new hardware crap?

  • DVD Burner not found

I have recently installed a new DVD burner on my PC however when I tried to burn a DVD from Premier Elements it states that the burner is not found.
I have however been able to burn a disc when using AVCHD as it finds the burner.
The drop down for the find burner location is alos blank and not letting me find the drive.
Does anyone have any suggestions as top what I can do to get the dvd recognised.

    endfates
This is now the 4th old post (this time only 1 year old instead of 3 to 4 like the others) in which you are sharing the same generalized report on what worked for you with a burner recognition problem. In each of your other threads that I am finding, I am asking for the following same supplemental information from you, information which I feel is important to your shared content. So, I repeat
    endfates
What version of Premiere Elements are you working with and on what computer operating system is it running?
With what type of burner are you working where you had this burner not recognized issue - Blu-ray/DVD/CD or just DVD/CD?
What specific video codecs did you find it necessary to install beyond what was provided for by the program, QuickTime, Windows Media Player,
and the usual assortment of players?
Besides "burner not recognized", did you have any "media not present" issues as well?
This information would be important since there is a 4 year gap between since the last entry in this thread (2010) and your post in this thread
    tonight (2014).
    Thank you.

Again, I point out that there are negative as well as positive aspects to the try this and try that "codecs". That is why I feel the requested information is important to the serial generalized messages that you are posting one after the other tonight in 1 to 4 year old threads.

  • Re: K7T266pro2 Board mod - Problem with DVD burner/DVD ROM

    Hi there!
I did the mod and installed a Athlon XP 2400 (T-Bred) on my board. Everything worked perfect, I had the 3.7 bios and it recognized the processor correctly, same for WIN, Sandra etc. System is stable, temperature are much lower compared to my old 1700XP.
But there exits a problem and I am not sure if it's related to the removal of the cap. First my DVD burner and my DVD-ROM stopped working and after thorough testing (different combinations master/slave/CS...) I thought they're broken and got a new DVD burner. But after installing this one - sampe problem.
This is the problem: The bios does not recognize the burner when it's in "auto" setting, it does so when doing autodetection in the bios. Then it says "DVD" for the respective IDE channel. But the drive does not react. If I press eject the lamp on the drive starts blinking but nothing happens, the tray does not open. Sometimes the drive is listing in WIN but it's not accessible.
All my HDD's work fine even on the same IDE channel.
Does anyone encounter a similiar rpoblem or have any idea how to solve this? I am sure itt must be a bios issue (to test I have flashed the 3.74 beta bios but problem remains).
    Thanks.
    Cheers
    P.

Hello! I tried to reply, but was thrown out of the forum without passing "Go". In short:
Have only one optical drive in.
Make it Master at the end of the cable.
    Disable DMA for it.
If this one works now, continue with the next.
Don't re-enable DMA till both are working.

  • MSI 6380 Problem with DVD burner

    Hello
I have a prob with my new DVD burner. Maybe someone of oyu has any idea what could be the prob.
I have an Athlon XP 2400 (T-Bred) on my board (MSI Kt7 266, MSI 6380 v2). I have done the C37 mod and removed the cap. Everything worked fine. Processor correctly recognized etc.
First my old DVD burner and my old DVD-ROM stopped working (means they didn't react to any commands anymore, I pres sejecct and nothing happens...) and after thorough testing (different combinations with correct jumper setting master/slave/CS..., new cable...) I thought they're broken and got a new DVD burner. But after installing this one - sampe problem.
This is the problem in deatils: The bios does recognize the burner in autodetection in the bios or with the setting "auto". Then it says "DVD" for the respective IDE channel and during bootpu it shows the correct name of theburner (LG GSA-4163). But the drive does not react on commands. If I press eject the lamp on the drive starts blinking but nothing happens, the tray does not open. It blinks a few times then blinks a few times very fast but nothing happens. The drive is listed in the explorer in WIN but I cannot access it. Also, the device manager shows no problem. All my HDD's work fine even on the same IDE channel.
Does anyone encounter a similiar rpoblem or have any idea how to solve this?
    Thanks.

I got another psu, more powerful then my old one. Same problem though. Can it be that this is the third optical drive in a row that fails?
Strange is that with the new psu (3,3-28A, 5V-35A, 12V-26A, 410W combined, ANTEC Truepower) my hardware monitor shows that for all the power the values are lower compared to my old psu. It shows 3,26 V 4,9V and 11,7V repsectively. With the other psu all values were higher. Is that an error or does this new psu suck?

  • Creating a new library from a DVD Burn library

I have my entire library of photos on my iMac in iPhoto 6.0.6. I recently spent quite a bit of time cleaning up what had been a rather messy, unorganized, photo library. My organizational method consisted of consolidating old film rolls which were inherited from original imports that were in different folders by moving groups of photos into single "film rolls" for older years and making fewer rolls for the last few years. I then went back through and corrected photo dates for a bunch of images that were scanned in, etc. I downloaded Keyword Manager, which I like a lot, and applied keywords to every photo in my collection. I also deleted a bunch of old photos which were too similar to better shots or simply not worth keeping. Once I finished all of this I had my new library consisting of 1892 pictures, which I hoped to backup and allow to serve as a "gold master copy" of all of my photos to date. In browsing the database in Finder, I noted that there were a lot of images in the "Original" folders that were not in the library. Some of these were images I had deleted in the library. (I know better than to do anything through the finder other than browse. I know that to maintain integrity of the library it is necessary to only perform actions through iPhoto.) I did a database rebuild and asked iPhoto to recover orphaned files which did nothing. I really wanted this database to be in pristine condition since I was using it as my master copy, but could not figure out how to do away with old unwanted images in the "originals" folders. I went ahead and created a DVD library with "Share -> Burn", and voila, the new iPhoto Library that was created on the DVD appeared to be "clean" with only the 1892 pictures in my viewable library existing in the Originals folder. OK, so far so good. I then took the DVD I had burned and attempted to replicate my library on my iBook which had a clean install of iLife '06 on it. When I launched iPhoto with the DVD in place it showed me an empty hard drive library and the burned library from the DVD. At first I attempted to just copy individual Film Rolls from the DVD to the local library. While this worked in bring the images over, the keywords became all jumbled. The resulting photos would have keywords attached which did not belong to them and were different from what was on the DVD. I then deleted the iBook library and tried copying the entire iPhoto Library folder from the DVD to the iBook via the Finder. When I relaunched iPhoto, presto all the photos were in my local library with keywords, film rolls and other metadata intact. However in browsing the library I came across a few photos which would cause iPhoto to crash when I tried to edit them. This was a consistent behavior on specific images. Reading through the forums I came across the color profile bug and through testing verified that this was not the problem. Meanwhile back on the iMac I could edit the photos in question with no problem. I verified that the image had not been corrupted during the DVD burn as well. The files are identical between the iMac and the iBook. I know this is a long drawn out post, but if anybody has read this far, here are my questions ...
    1) What is the best way to go about creating a "clean" database with internal integrity after a doing a lot of edits and metadata changes? Shouldn't the burn to DVD do what I want?
    2) How come when I copied subsets of my library over to a new machine from the DVD, the keywords seemed to get all jumbled? Is it a matter of indexing them? If I added all the keywords to an empty library before copying the images over, would it work? Is there not a way to just copy portions of a DVD library into another library?
    3) Any ideas on the crash while attempting to edit problem? The image will load as a thumbnail, and then briefly flas the full size image, before iPhoto crashes and pops up a dialog asking if I want to restart it.
    Thanks for staying with me!
