New DVR Issues (First Run, Channel Switching, etc.)

I've spent the last 30 minutes trying to find answers through the search with no luck, so sorry if I missed something.
I recently switched to FIOS from RCN cable in New York.  I've gone through trying to setup my DVR and am running into issues and was hoping for some answers.
1.  I setup two programs to record at 8PM, I was watching another channel at the time and only half paying attention.  Around 8:02 I noticed a message had popped up asking if I would like to switch channels to start recording.  I was expecting it to force it to switch like my old DVR, but in this case it didn't switch and I missed the first two minutes of one of the shows.  I typically leave my DVR on all day and just turn off the TV, this dual show handling will cause issues with that if I forget to turn off the DVR.  Is there a setting I can change that will force the DVR to choose one of the recording channels?
2.  I setup all my recordings for "First Run" because I only want to see the new episodes.  One show I setup was The Daily Show on comedy central, which is shown weeknights at 11pm and repeated 3-4 times throughout the day.  My scheduled recordings is showing all these as planned recordings even though only the 11pm show is really "new".  Most of the shows I've setup are once a week so they aren't a problem, but this seems like it will quickly fill my DVR.  Any fixes?
Thanks for the help.

Go to Solution.

I came from RCN about a year ago.  Fios is different in several ways, not all of them desirable.  Here are several ways to get--and fix--unwanted recordings from a series recording setup.
Some general principles.
Saving changes.  When you originally create a series with options, or if you go back to edit the options for an existing series, You MUST save the Series Options changes.  Pretty much everywhere else in the user interface, when you change an option, the change takes effect immediately--but not in Series Options.  Look at the Series Options window.  Look at the far right side.  There is a vertical "Save" bar, which you must navigate to and click OK on to actually save your changes.  Exiting the Series Options window without having first saved your changes loses all your attempted changes--immediately.
Default Series Options.  This is accessed  from [Menu]--DVR--Settings--Default Series Options.  This will bring up the series options that will automatically be applied to the creation of a NEW series. The options for every previously created series will not be affected by a subsequent modification of the Default Series Options.  You should set these options to the way you would like them to be for the majority of series recordings that you are likely to create.  Be sure to SAVE your changes.  This is what you will get when you select "Create Series Recording" from the Guide.  When creating a new series recording where you think that you may want options different from the default, select "Create Series with Options" instead.  Series Options can always be changed for any individual series set up later--but not for all series at once.
Non-series recordings.  With Fios you have no directly available options for these.  With RCN and most other DVRs, you can change the start and end times for individual episodes, including individual episodes that are also in a series.  With Fios, your workarounds are to create a series with options for a single program, then delete the series later;  change the series options if the program is already in a series, then undo the changes you made to the series options later; or schedule recordings of the preceding and/or following shows as needed.
And now, to the unwanted repeats.
First, make sure your series options for the specific series in question--and not just the series default options--include "First Run Only".  If not, fix that and SAVE.  Then check you results by viewing the current options using the Series Manager app under the DVR menu.
Second, and most annoying, the Guide can have repeat programs on your channel tagged as "New".  It happens.  Set the series option "Air Time" to "Selected Time".  To make this work correctly, you must have set up the original series recording after selecting the program in the Guide at the exact time of a first run showing (11pm, in your case), and not on a repeat entry in the Guide.  Then, even it The Daily Show is tagged as New for repeat showings, these will be ignored.
Third, another channel may air reruns of the program in your series recording, and the first showing of a rerun episode on the other channel may be tagged as "New".  These can be ignored in your series if you set the series option "Channel" to "Selected Channel".  Related to this, if there is both an SD and HD channel broadcasting you series program, you will record them both if the series option "Duplicates" is set to "Yes".  However, when the Channel option is set to "Selected Channel", the Duplicates Option is always effectively "No", regardless of what shows up on the options screen.
As for you missing two minutes,  I have sereral instances in which two programs start recording at the same time.  To the best of my recollection, whenever the warning message has appeared, ignoring it has not caused a loss of recording time.  You might have an older software version.  Newest is v.1.8.  Look at Menu--Settings--System Info.  Or, I might not have noticed the loss of minutes.  I regularly see up to a minute of previous programming at the start of a recording, or a few missing seconds at the beginning or end of a recording.  There are a lot of possibilities for that, but the DVR clock being incorrect is not one of them.  With RCN, the DVR clocks occasionally drifted off by as much as a minute and a half.

  • How can I disable the 'First Run' and 'Whats New' pages from showing after updating Firefox for all users that log onto a system.

I am a system administrator and need a way to set a global preference to not open the Whats New and first run pages. I found the browser.startup.homepage_override.mstone preference in the user profile but want to be able to set this globally.

Use a mozilla.cfg file in the Firefox program folder to lock prefs or specify default values.
Place a file local-settings.js in the defaults\pref folder where you also find the file channel-prefs.js to specify using mozilla.cfg.
    pref("general.config.filename", "mozilla.cfg");
    pref("general.config.obscure_value", 0); // use this to disable the byte-shift
    See:

You can use these functions in mozilla.cfg:

lockPref(); // lock pref, disallow changes

  • Illustrator CS4, new Pantone color books, color channel issue

Since I installed the new Pantone color books, I've been running in a major issue which will affect our whole production line.
If an Illustrator CS4 file contains a Photoshop CS4 image which is using an "old" Pantone color in a color channel, it cannot be opened and I get an error message "File is unreadable". If I replace the "old" Pantone colour with its new equivalent in the color channel in Photoshop, the file can be opened normally.
In our work environment, this means going through all our images to check which one is using a color channel. A painful and time wasting procedure. Furthermore, if one of our suppliers doesn't have the new color books, they won't be able to open any of the files, both Photoshop and Illustrator, so they have no way to revert back to the old Pantone.
Is there another way to fix this?
    Thank you

More on the Pantone PLUS saga, hoping to get some input from the users of this forum. I find their silence deafening, to say the least. This is a serious issue, that will cost our agency hours and hours of work if it isn't addressed. And we've already wasted hours of troubleshooting and discussions on how we could resolve it.
We're actually testing a workaround: using both the old and the new libraries in Illustrator. After consulting our suppliers, we've learned that this is what they also do. For them, it's a one shot to get the file to print. For us, it means cheating with files that will get edited again in the future. And the Pantone installer removes the old Pantone books from the Adobe folders for a reason which is mentioned on the download page:
The reason that the PANTONE Color Libraries that had been built into Illustrator need to be removed and replaced with the PANTONE PLUS Color Libraries is that, in Illustrator, a PANTONE Color can only have one data point with which it is associated. In the short term, in order to benefit from the new colors and data associated in PLUS, the PANTONE Libraries that are installed with Adobe Illustrator are removed and replaced with the new PLUS Libraries.
    http://www.pantone.com/pages/Pantone/Pantone.aspx?pg=20721&ca=1
I worry this may lead to another bunch of issue, knowing how easily AI files get corrupted. What I need to know is:
What is the exact meaning of the Pantone warning about the "one data point per color?
What are the long term implications of using both Pantone libraries in an Adobe file? Or in the Adobe app?

  • Overlapping Channels and DVR issues

I wanted to report an issue or see if anyone else has experienced what has been happening to me.  I live in the DC metro area and I go to the HD NBC (504) or HD CBS (509) stations with no problems. However multiple times I have gone to either station and what is showing is not correct.  Sometimes when I go to channel 504, I'm getting programming produced by the local NBC channel, or when I go to channel 509, I get the weather radar.  When this happens on either channel, I just turn the channel and then come back and the correct content is being broadcasted.  I believe this is also causing DVR issues as well because sometimes when I got to watch a recording from either of these channels, I see the show recorded twice and only for 1 or 2 seconds.  It's frustrating because I have lost out on shows that are not repeated nor on demand.  Any ideas on what is gong on?

Is this common? If i didn't like my internet speed I would have dropped this garbage service a long time ago !
I'd just bypass customer service and swap out the dvr for a different one. You can go to a fios store, do it through your account on verizon.net or the easiest way, do it on the dvr itself.
Go to menu, customer support, set top box exchange.

  • Distinguishing First Run and Rerun for DVR Recording

If you want to record a series, not just a single show, the only choice you have is to record BOTH First-Run episodes AND Reruns.  I note that Direct TV users and TiVo users have a choice when recording a series by selecting First Run Only or First Run and Repeats.  Without this discriminate, shows that repeat habitually throughout the day and week are recorded.  This is a major inconvenience if your recording are almost exclusively series TV shows.  It becomes very inconvenient for series broadcast on HBO, where throught the week multiple series and reruns--for example Boardwalk Empire--are all playing in a single week.  The lack of this feature--that other services already have--is a major shortcoming.

Something odd there.  Which DVR model?
Should be press DVR button scrool to manage series recordings, press right, scroll to show, press ok,  (options including change priority, modify series and cancel series.  Modify Series. press ok.  Options on that include episodes (first run only/first run and repeats). Scroll to episodes, press enter, change as desired, press ok, push right to save, press ok. close menus, may have to do repeated exits.
You may also want to find the dvr settings to set your default options for creating series recordings.  menu/settings/system/dvr/default series options

  • I want to upgrade my old airport express to the new express. Can I just switch out the old for the new or must I delete the old network first and start from scratch with the new express?

I want to upgrade my old airport express to the new express. Can I just switch out the old for the new or must I delete the old network first and start from scratch with the new express?

It is not necessary to delete your old wireless networks first, but doing so may eliminate confusion. If you wish to do that, open System Preferences > Network, and select Wi-Fi from the left column. Click the Advanced... button, then select your old wireless networks and delete them with the "–" (minus) button. Make sure the "Remember networks this computer has joined" remains checked.
    OK then Apply.
This prevents your Mac from searching for your previous network which will no longer exist.
A new Express creates an open wireless network that you must select before you can configure it. It appears in your Wi-Fi menu like this:
Select it. AirPort Utility will load and walk you through its configuration.
Edit: If you are really using OS X 10.5.1 as shown in your profile, the above screenshot is not applicable. Instead, select the network called "Apple network nnnnnn" and then launch AirPort Utility.

  • Show not flagged as "first run" in listings, causing dvr headaches

As of 21 April 2014, "The Boondocks" episode that airs on Cartoon HD at 10:30pm EDT each Monday is a first run.  However, the listings on my FiOS guide don't show it as such, so if I have my dvr set to record first run only, it doesn't record ANYTHING.  If I eliminate the first run requirement, it schedules EVERY airing of the show to record.  Please fix this.  Thank you.

One area I saw a major improvement (about 2.5x faster) was in the processing of Magic Bullet effects, specifically Colorista and Looks.
If you use those effects at all (or any others that may be processed on the GPU), the extra CUDA cores really do make a significant difference.

    Hi,
I am stuck with the issue to run redistributeactivedatabases.ps1 in new-pssession.
Is there any best pratice or some other script to redistribute the mailbox databases using new-pssession

    Hi Jrv,
I am sorry for not being very clear.
Also i know what i am trying is not very sane but i cannot help it as i got order that i have to achive this.
    Below are the exact suitation.
We have JP1 server (Automation) which we use to reboot/failover/failback.
I have to automate failover and failback scripts. I am able to achive failover part as it is simple command
    Move-ActiveMailboxDatabase -server servername
    and it is working.
For failback and automatic rebalance mailbox database according to the activation preference i am using below script which i have to run using cmd.
    $mbxs =
    Get-MailboxDatabase
    | sort name
    ForEach($mbx
    in $mbxs){
        $MBdb=$mbx.Name
        $ServerHosting=$mbx.Server.Name
        if($mbx.activationPreference.value
    -eq 1)
            If
    ($ServerHosting -ne $ActivationPreference.Key.Name){
                Move-ActiveMailboxDatabase $MBdb
    -ActivateOnServer $ActivationPreference.Key.Name
    -confirm:$False
But the problem i am getting is that script is not working when i am running this in cmd or in powershell.
But if i run the same script on Exchange server using Exchange Management shell then there are no issues.
So, i need your help so that i can run above script using cmd in new-pssession.
Hopefully i am able to make some sense now.

  • New DVR Scheduler Bugs: Priority Settings No Longer Working, Scrolling Series Schedules is Flakey

    Hi,
After this last HD DVR update, I have two new problems:
    1) I can no longer set the priority of most of my series schedules. I have about 100 series schedule entries, which the DVR update probably wasn't tested for.
Now when I try to set a series priority, it LOOKS like it worked, but if I get out of DVR options and go back into Manage Recordings, 90% of the time I find that the series priority is either unchanged, or (even worse) has bounced up to some unexpected random priority - Thus, I have to search the series list  to find it - Then I cannot move it back to where it's supposed to be!
It seems that only moving a series priority a little bit will sometimes work, but moving the series from near the top of the list to near the bottom (or vice-versa) doesn't work at all, even though it may appear like it worked until the list is refreshed (either by paging up and down the list a few times, or by exiting the DVR manager and going back in).
    2) The scrolling is messed up now in the series schedule manager - When setting Priority, as I scrool up or down from the middle of the list using the arrow or Page buttons,  the list will end unexpectedly, making it impossible to actually drag the series to the bottom or top of the list. Then if you deposit the series at the "end" of the list, suddenly the rest of the list will then magically appear (of course, the series schedule you deposited there will no longer be where you deposited it - See problem #1). Obviously the list is running out of buffer space, so the next part of the list isn't being loaded while you're in the process of changing a series priority..
Scrolling is also messed up just scrolling through the list without changing priority: Scrolling through my series schedules USED to be very FAST and painless using the Page (Channel) up/down button, I could scroll from top to bottom of my 100 series schedules in a matter of like 5 seconds. NOW, it takes forever and is a real pain to scroll from top to bottom, because the scrolling pauses on just about every other page - As though it ran out of buffer space and is having trouble loading the next buffer.
I have a lot of series schedule entries so all the First-run Programs are at the top of the priority list, then all the re-runs are in the bottom half of the list. That's the only way I have found to prevent Re-Runs from hijacking new programs, since there's no DVR option to prevent re-runs from inteferring with new episodes (BTW, in order for this to work, the First-Run schedule must be created first. Then a duplicate First-Run and Reruns schedule must be created - Creating them in reverse order will throw a "Duplicate" error message).
The DVR software has always been buggy and feature-depribed, but this is rediculous - To think the programming team didn't even test the scrolling and priority of series schedules is as bad as the ObamaCare website, and that's setting a very low bar! You HAVE to test EVERYTHING when you release new updates, even if the programmers say it won't affect anything else, because from my experience programmers develop tunnel vision (been there, done that myself), and if you have more than one person on the programming team, neither programmer will communicate their changes to anyone else (been there, done that too).

I have the identical problem after the recent software upgrade which VERIZON did to my DVR.
In addition, I have "Manual Series" listed under the "Manage Series Recordings" section of my DVR for about 10 of the tv shows that I have tagged to be recorded weekly. Several others have reported this seemingly related problem to this forum.
I've tried twice to report the latter problem to VERIZON's technical support staff, but met with indifference in the first attempt (a guy recommended that I replace my DVR with a new one - an utterly ridiculous suggestion), and in my second attempt I got a somewhat helpful lady who couldn't correct this glitch and was unaware of others having same problem but promised to send it up the flagpole to higher level tech folks (best action that I realistically could get).
As I told VERIZON's techies, I likely was not the only customer experiencing these problems - and your and others postings to this forum confirm my initial hunch.  VERIZON leaves a lot to be desired in the testing of their software "upgrades".

  • New DVR, Can't Recognize Existing ESata Drive/Programs

I had a Motorola 7216 DVR box that had an external ESata drive.  The box had three issues:  froze 2-3 times a day for maybe 30 seconds, sound "clipping" during loud sections of shows/movies, and I could never get the Android app or web app to connect to the DVR.  So, I received a new 7232 DVR today.  Prior to disconnecting the old, I did the proper method of ejecting of the ESata Drive.
I hooked up the new DVR, and (possibly mistakenly) hooked up the ESata drive as well before booting it up the first time.   Did the initialization, all went well.   Went through the routine of adding ESata, rebooted, didn't recognize the drive.   Realize I maybe shouldn't have plugged it in, so unplugged ESata cord, rebooted, did Set-Top Box Auto Correct, then went through the proper routine to add external storage.   However, when rebooting, the box blinks one light for 30 seconds, then the entire display lights up, then it reboots, repeating this routine ad infinitum (nothing ever displays on the TV).
So, thinking I got a bad box, I hook up the old DVR, get it working, and then run the add ESata routine.  It now is in the same infinite loop as the old box (for 30 minutes now as I type).
Removing the ESata, and rebooting, back to normal operation, though without ESata and all of the recorded shows.
Any ideas?   Do you think my "mistake" in hooking up the ESata drive to the new box right off the bat might have messed up the drive?   I'm ordering an ESata to Sata cable so I can hook up the drive to my PC and see if it's accessable.  Maybe I can reformat it, knowing we'll lose all our programs (actually, my wife's programs......no big deal to me )
Or does it take a long time to initialize an existing ESata drive with lots of programs on it?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Greetings, armond_in_nj!
Thanks for your message responding to my plea for help!
OK.... Finally have had time to try everything again AND make notes along the way.
    I have a Motorola STB, model HD DVR QIP 7216 P2 500GB.
I have a Western Digital external eSata hard drive, model  WDBABT0010HBK-NESN – 1TB (on the "approved" list).
And yes, I have tried everything mentioned in the post by "steveKane" just above my original. See below at the end for what happened when I tried to re-format my WD drive on my desktop PC.
When I first got my WD external HD several months ago, I had to call Verizon support to get the DVR to recognize the Western Digital external HD, but we finally got that fixed and all was fine (i.e., programs recording to external HD, status visible under DVR/Recorder Status using my remote). Then, around mid-november, when I would schedule programs to record, either when I was asleep or at work, when I went to view them later, often times one program was broken into 2 or more segments. Then a little later, sometimes while watching a recorded program, the DVR would just freeze. I would reset the Set Top Box (STB) and could continue watching the program. But this all got worse and worse and, finally, I called tech support. After a frustrating hour with a tech support person, who declared everything was fine with my STB because I could press RECORD and the DVR would record a short segment of programming. During that hour conversation, we had reset the STB more than 10 times. I finally asked to speak with this technician's supervisor, who finally agreed with me that the STB needed replacing. When I received the new STB, it would not function at all. So.... another call to support, more attempts on their end to re-set the STB, and finally they agreed that I needed yet another new STB. When that arrived, I went through all the proper steps to set up the STB first, without the external HD and, only when the new STB was working properly did I try to get it to recognize my external HD.
The Western Digital instructions for connecting their drive to my DVR are as follows:
    1. Power off the DVR box by disconnecting the AC power cord. --- Did that
    2. Connect one end of the eSATA cable to your My Book AV and the other end to the DVR box (do not use a USB cable to connect to DVR) -- Did that
    3. Connect one end of the AC power cord to the My Book AV and the other end to the electrical outlet. The power LED inlluminates. ---- I did, and it did
    4. Waii approximately 15 seconds for the hard drive to reach operating speed. -- Did that
    5. Power on the DVR box by reattaching the AC power cord. -- Did that
    6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
This procedure did not work. There were no on-screen instructions when I powered the STB back on. So, I did the following:
    1. I went to "DVR/Enable more storage" and followed the prompts from there, which at one point told me to connect the external HD to the STB, which it already was. I pressed OK to proceed and got the message that "external storage is active for this STB. To detect the external hard, please press OK to reboot the STB".
    2. Did that, waited; during reboot, a white band appears briefly across the TV screen with the words "Please wait" in red, then it goes away as the reboot process continues. Eventually, I get a message that says "Press MENU to watch FiOS TV, or turn your TV off". I press MENU, the screen appears (with red background) saying "Verizon FiOS is starting up - one moment pleast. Initial download in progress. It takes about one minute", then after a minute or so, the TV image appears.
    3. I go to DVR/Recorder status, and the external HD is not there.
Since the STB prompted me to connect the external HD during step 1 above, I decided to power everything off, disconnect the eSATA cable from the back of the STB, reconnect power to the external HD, then reconnect power to the STB to reboot.
Everything in step 2 above proceeds as outlined there, but still I got no on-screen instructions after FiOS started back up. So, I went to DVR/Enable more storage, followed the prompts until asked to connect the external HD to the STB, at which time, now, I get a pop-up screen that says "The connected external HD has been previously used with another STB with a different DVR. Using the drive on this STB will remove all existing content on the drive. Do you want to use this drive?" Options are "ACCEPT" or "REJECT". I press OK to ACCEPT, then we go through the whole reboot thing again, and still no sign of the external HD under DVR/Recorder status.
I even tried connecting the WD external HD to my desktop computer (running XP Professional) using a USB cable (following "steveKane's" suggestion in his posting of 12-02-12), thinking I could try to reformat the drive on my desktop. After connecting, I go to Window Explorer and the drive is not there. When I open the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the Task Bar, the drive is visible there. I tried stopping the device, removing it, then waiting a bit and reconnecting it, but get the same results. Not visible in Explorer so that I can try to re-format.
The posting by "mcorbo" right above "steveKane's" posting says "The only way to reuse the drive is to let the dvr reformat it." So how does one get the DVR to reformat the drive????
I hope I have given you the information needed.
I'm at my wits end. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
