New(?) encoder for a Mac...

Just thought I would post my own personal experience with this, in the event it may or may not help someone else. I basically straddle both the PC and Apple worlds. I edit SD and HD content on a PC with Edius (from Canopus) and encode most of my content with Procoder 2 (from Canopus). I migrate tiles created in Livetype or composited clips from Motion over to my PC, and use DVDSP for dvd content creation (and at times use eDVD 4 on my PC to add ROM content). I was intrigued by the announcement of Boot Camp and running Windows XP on a Mac. I recently got my MacBook Pro (Intel based), and thought I would stick my foot in the water.
All I can say is "WOW". It really does work like it says it should on paper. This laptop outperformed my stand alone PC (granted it's a couple of years old--P4 3.6HT chip, 2 gig of RAM) using both Edius and Procoder. The transcode speeds have been faster, but to be fair I haven't had a chance to do a head to head comparison of all the typical transcodes I do.
I know of some who have wondered if Canopus would ever make a Mac version of their encoder. The answer is maybe never--since they won't have to. Procoder does near real time encoding of dv to mpeg for dvd file preparation in the 'mastering' (best) setting--in other words, FAST.
I'm in heaven.

I was really taken aback about how well it performed. The only glitch I seem to be having is creating custom profiles and having them be saved. It's not a big deal because you can set up the encode quickly anyway, but custom profiles are nice. I need to play with it a bit more to see if there's a trick. I haven't done a watch folder yet, but that's my next test. The cool thing is you can encode your files on the PC side, reboot and within the 'Mac side' see the windows partition and access your encoded files directly.

Wow, I worked on my MacMini after watching the video.
But BEWARE!
That OWC video misses a crucial step! (I emailed them)
My MacMini had a bit of "invisible" black tape holding the disk connector to the disk, very hard to see. When I pulled off the connector, it came apart !
That bit of tape must be something Apple added, or some manufacturers added, but it really messed me up. I had to send my MacMini off to be repaired, at a cost about $200 including parts and labour.

Turned out the hardware was bad. Apple exchanged it for a new Mac Air and the new trackpad works great. Thank goodness it was a defect. If the trackpads all worked like that I would have been bummed.

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.
Partition and Format the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
This will install the version of OS X that originally came with your model if you have a model that supports Internet Recovery - 2010 models and later: Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery.

How can I buy an new Superdrive for my mac pro without having to take my computer to a apple store?????

I have a Mac Pro and my optical drive is not working anymore.Thus, I went to the online store to buy another one.
Surprisingly, the only one I found was the macbook air (external) superdive.
I did not buy it online on that day. However, I went to the Apple Retail Store in Sydney to buy another external hard drive and asked to one of the costumer supports in red if the "macbook air" superdrive would work in any mac. The answer: YES!!! So, I got one. When I was paying the products I asked to the other "red mac guy" the same question... Again, the answer was YES!!!
So... Do these costumer support guys have any training. It is written in the box that requires a macbook air... That's why I asked for two different guys!!! Why did they say YES???
Ok! Lets not put the fault on the red guys... So I ask Apple:
Why apple does not make a external superdrive for pros?? Or one that works for all macs!!

Why can't we buy internal superdrives anymore? Neither the online store or the retail store sell them anymore!!!

You know you don't have to buy a replacement dvd drive from apple. For example, take a look at OWC's selection.
You don't say what year your mac pro is so I use a 2008 as an example. On that page click the little picture that shows a 2008 mac pro. That will take you to this page. And there's an example of a Lite-On drive.
In addition, on the right side of that page are links to instructional videos on how to add the drive to your machine. Click, for example, Optical, med (medium) and you will see how straight forward it is to change the optical drive.

New tool for opening Mac mini

I bought two of these fish tank scrapers for my Mac Mini. They are just 0.1mm thick and very strong. These are much thinner than any putty knife from the hardware store. Very easy to insert into the gap between the aluminum case and plastic base, without leaving any scuffle marks. And they have handles to let you apply pressure to disengage the inside clips.
Insert the two blades on the opposite edges and press the handles outward to lift the base up in no time.

HP Officejet Pro L7580- here's a new one for HP Mac Architect

So like all the other disgruntled HP users who foolishly installed 10.5 when it was released, I have been without a scanner ever since. Until three days ago, however, I've been able to print, as the driver for the L7580 was included in Leopard. Now, whenever I try to print a document, the print queue opens and the job says "stopped", which, incidentally, is the same thing that happens when I send a print job to my other once-was-a-printer-now-just-a-giant-waste-of-space, the Canon LBP5000. I've racked my brain trying to think if I've done something to trigger this, pestered the HP call in support center, installed, uninstalled and installed the printer again, restarted, replaced the USB cable- anything I can think of. Nothing works. I run a small business and while it's been a huge inconvenience to lose my not so inexpensive scanner, I've made due with an old one waiting for HP to get their act together and release software that actually works with 10.5. Needless to say, I cannot work without a printer. Am I going to have to go back to Tiger now? Spend untold thousands of dollars on a printer that probably won't work with leopard anyway? Can anyone advise? HP Mac Architect?

Try this for a Quick Fix ...........
After reading other forum comments from people having the same problem with the yellow cartridge popping-out, combined with others who have realised that HP have no interest in compensating anyone for this rediculous example of, at best, 'bad design', or at worst 'blatent planned obsolescence', I have created a 'quick fix' that may add another 1, 2 or more years of life to the HP Officejet Pro L7580 Printer.
This is not the elegant technical solution I was hoping for. However, in hindsight, it may prove to be a more reliable solution than replacing the faulty part that is actually causing the problem. So, here it is the Quick Fix ........
I found a wooden triangular door stop that I cut to size that fitted exactly in the space between the plastic door and the offending yellow cartridge. To hold it in place, I wrapped the doorstop with 2" cellotape, then I stuck the door stop to the inside of the plastic door with double sided cellotape (double sided stick-on foam would also work well). With the doorstop in the correct place, the plastic door closed perfectly and was snug enough to apply sufficent pressure to the offending yellow cartridge, and hence stopping it from popping out again. To make sure the plastic door does not 'fly open' with the pressure of the yellow cartridge (when it wants to pop out!), I applied another piece of 2" cellotape around the outside of the door, holding it to the body of the photocopier.
This exercise only took 10-15 mins to do. I feel this is a much better option than spending another $300+ on a new All-in-One system, as well as being a good environmental solution. If this is DELIBERATE 'planned obsolescence', companies like HP need to be more accountable for, at best, 'sloppy design'. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Media Encoder for CS4 (Mac Version) will not encode

I am editing on a new macbook pro and Premiere works great....but the media encoder keeps giving me error messages stating the source media can't be found. I have tried to update the software, but the update will not complete (update work for the rest of CS4). I have reinstalled and still have the same problem. I have downloaded to the most current patch but it tells me the version on my computer is newer. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Any ideas?

In addition to my post here is the answer why some user doesn't have security updater as an option to update:
It was to clarify the purpose of the update for anyone wondering why they did not find info about the security update when they ran Software Update. It isn't for everyone. This is version 1.1 of the security update. It is a revision. It is specifically targeted at versions or builds of Mac OS X 10.4.9 that developed issues when version 1.0 of the update was issued almost 2 weeks ago on 19 APR 2006 for PPC and Intel Macs. Version 1.0 has been removed from the Apple Downloads page, because it has now been superseded by the revision. Anyone who did not get version 1.0 will now get version 1.1, but folks who already got version 1.0 may not get version 1.1 because it is only targeted at specific users.

I downloaded the new Firefox for my Mac and it won't open. I deleted the old version. What am I doing wrong?

I can't get firefox to open now that I erased the old version and tried to install the new version (6.0.2) on my Mac. I was hoping I could update it and have my bookmarks and everything intact, but when I drag the firefox symbol into my dock it won't do anything after downloading. I have put it in the trash to delete it and re-downloaded it, but nothing seems to help. On top of it, the fan on my computer goes on when I am trying to get firefox to work ????

I also tried to download the .exe one, but as expected when I double click on it, I have an error message that confirmed Windows is not supported.

HT1119 I recently purchased a brand new battery for my mac book pro and if I allow my computer to run out of charge and plug it in just moments later it can take up to 40 minutes to turn back on again!

Is anyone else having this problem? I rely on my computer heavily for work and school and this is just not acceptable! After paying $125 for a brand new battery I would have never expected these problems.

I'm sure that if you search hard enough, you'll find someone else who has had a similar problem, but that does not mean that it is remotely normal or common. Apple definitely needs to replace the machine, but don't be afraid that the same thing will happen with the new one.
Of course, that's assuming that this wasn't a case of user error. It's hard to understand how it could be, but in my years of tech support, I've learned to never discount such possibilities. I've seen people do things like forceably shove plugs into the wrong ports, seemingly oblivious to the fact that it doesn't fit and insistent that it should.
