  • JAVA 1.6.0_22 UPDATE CREATED NEW ERRORS IN DISK UTILITY.CORRECTED POST

THIS IS A CORRECTED VERSION OF MY ORIGINAL POST AS IT MIGHT HAVE HAVE BEEN UNCLEAR. Permissions Verify and Repair Messages after Updating Java SE 6 to 1.6.0_22
    Posted: Oct 21, 2010 3:49 PM
THIS IS A CORRECTED VERSION OF A POST THAT I ALREADY MADE. AS YOU READ THIS PLEASE NOTE THAT THE FIRST SET OF VERIFY PERMISSIONS THAT YOU SEE HAVE ALREADY GONE THRU THE REPAIR PROCESS BUT THEY REMAIN AFTER I REPAIRED THEM AND THEN VERIFIED THEM AGAIN.
NEXT YOU WILL SEE VERIFYING AFTER THE NEW JAVE 1.6.0_22 UPDATE FROM YESTERDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2010,
I VERIFIED, REPAIRED, VERIFIED, REPAIRED AND IT NEVER REPAIRS. EACH TIME IT SAYS REPAIRED I VERIFY IT AGAIN AND IT STILL SHOWS THE SAME ERRORS.
I AM NOT CONCERNED WITH THE ERRORS PRIOR TO THE UPDATE. I AM CONCERNED WITH THE ERRORS THAT I HAVE AFTER THE JAVA UPDATE.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER.

Yesterday I installed the latest Java update. PRIOR to the update these were 'errors' showed when I ran Disk Utility:

ANY HELP IS MOST APPRECIATED AS APPLE SAYS IT IS NOT THEIR PROBLEM AS IT IS 3RD PARTY SOFTWARE AND MY WARRANTY EXPIRES IN 5 DAYS SO I AM HOPING SOMEBODY OUT THERE CAN HELP ME.
AGAIN -- THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIDS MATTER.
    MARA

    Greetings William,
Not one of my errors is on that list!
I am more concerned about the ones that start with "User" then I am of the others.
The only reason that I ran the update is because of the errors that I had on the disk before the update came out yesterday.
I had called Apple last week about the original errors and was told that the new update would resolve my issues; however, as you can see not only did it NOT resolve the original errors but created several new ones!
Today I see that Apple is discontinuing use of Java!
Also, I have 5 days left on my 3 year warranty with Apple and now they are telling me it is not their problem as it is a third party software. I will do one more clean install and will not do the last Java update that I did yesterday.
In any case I appreciate your input and wish you well.
Again -- thank you for your attention to this matter.

I've noticed a huge hit in performance since upgrading to Leopard and the issues mentioned above do not get repaired when trying to Repair Permissions.
Are these two issues related? - The lagging performance of my cool MacBook Pro, and the Permissions errors?
Is there a way to repair the issues with Permissions, AND - could the performance problem be something as simple as a bad stick of RAM?
Many thanks for your help and advice,
    Joel

See Mac OS X 10.5- Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions reports issues with SUID files. If you install the 10.5.6 Combo Updater - support.apple.com/downloads/ - these messages should cease. They are otherwise innocuous and have no effect on system performance.

  • Cloning new HDD with Disk Utility

    Hi,
Currently experiencing some problem while cloning to a new drive. Have properly prepared the new drive to "Journalized OS" compatible. My problem occurs when the clone is at its verifying stage. It simply got stuck at that stage and states it take 5 hours to finish, but it simply is not moving forward. As a result of this, I have tried cloning to the same drive twice and have canceled the process at the verifying stage.
Also, I notice when it hits the verifying stage - the new drive (in the enclosure for cloning) disappeared in the left side list. See photo below.
    My question is:
    1) Should I just let the cloning process alone and let it keep going even though the new drive disappears from the left list ?
    2) Is there a possibility that the enclosure is causing the issue? But could that still allow the drive to copy all the blocks in the initial stage, and stop at the verifying stage?
Thanks in advance for all your responses.

I dont use CCC anymore, Superduper is easier and never encountered an issue with same, its 2 clicks and sit back for 40 mins until done.
however if CCC or Superduper, here are clone and replace info:
    1. grab carbon copy cloner or superDuper CLONE app.
2 attach target clone drive via USB in an enclosure or HD dock. Firstly format the target (external new) HD or SSD in disk utility in “Mac OS extended journaled”
    3. clone internal HD to target HD or SSD (external) [takes about 40 mins depending on size]
    4. Boot ONCE from external (go to sys. preference to boot from external) to TEST the new Clone
    5. open bottom (see videos on ifixit or youtube on same) and remove old, install new.
(this video is for a 2012, look at this site for YOUR specific year / model)
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Replacing+MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2012+Hard+ Drive/10378/1
    Done
(FIRST TIME after installing,  boot will be SLOW,...normal and ignore that).
    Clone APPS
Superduper does not clone the recovery partition, but that is NOT necessary if you keep the original HD as a “backup clone”. Most don’t bother with the recovery partition in a clone, however that is your prerogative.

  • External Hard Disc won't mount - Partition Map error.  Can't repair with Disk Utility

Happy New Year all and thanks in advance for any support/advise.
I have some important data on an external drive that does not seem to want to mount.  The drive is a 500 GB Seagate connected via USB.  I am currently on an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Yosemity 10.10.1
    What I've tried:
Multiple computers - connected the drive to various apple computers with the same result.
New enclosure:  I have removed the actual HD from the enclosure and connected it using a new one.
Disk Utility:  Verifying Disc reports the following error:  'Error: Partition map check failed because no slices were found.'  Screenshot below:
I have searched this and other forums and run a few commands in Terminal that seem relevant to the issue, but am out of my depth in terms of interpreting the results.  Thank again for your attention!!!

Select the disk1s1 volume under the main drive entry, then click on the Mount icon in the Disk Utility toolbar if it goes active and see if a volume then mounts on your Desktop. If it does not, then you need to reformat the drive. And, you cannot access the volume in order to copy your data somewhere else. If you are willing to spend money on the problem, then you can always try using a software recovery utility:
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as MAC Data Recovery, Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Recovery software usually provide trial versions that enable you to determine if the software would help before actually paying for it. Beyond this or if the drive has completely failed, then you would need to send the drive to a recovery service which is very expensive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Problems with External Hard drive, will not mount and errors in disk utilit

i have a powerbook g4 aluminum. i have an external hard drive for it. a simple tech 100gig portable drive, almost brand new. i dont know what happened to it, but one day i was starting my computer up with it attached. it wounldnt fully start up, said "waiting for local disks" so i uplugged the external hard drive. now it wont mount and will only show up in the disk utility of my friends macbook. i tried to verify and repair, and this is the message i got.
    Verify and Repair disk “UNTITLED”

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 non HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Im in mexico writing a book and so i really need help on this one guys.

Hi, hjbugs, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Disconnecting the drive while your Powerbook was accessing it probably caused your problem. It may be repairable using DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro, but if you don't have access to one of those and aren't going to buy one, reformatting the drive with Disk Utility may be the only other way to make it usable again. If it contains data you need to recover first (i.e., data that isn't also stored on your internal HD or other storage media), download the free demo version of one of the data recovery utilities mentioned in this thread and use it to see what is recoverable. If the files you need are recoverable, buy the full version of one of the utilities and recover them.

  • Can Time Capsule hard drive be accessed with Disk Utility? I'm having issues...

How does one mount , inspect , verify , and possibly repair a Time Capsule hard drive  with Disk Utility ?
My 500Gb 1st gen Time Capsule  ( used wireless with Airport)  has quit backing up new data . ( iMac Core2Duo, Snow Leopard) .  TC  says it needs 238 Gb of available space, but only has 35 Gb available. So it quit doing new  incremental backup altogether. It's almost like it wants to start over.
Airport connection seems good.  Time Capsule seems healthy enough ( for being 3.5 years old) .  I really dont want to lose the data on the existing backup.
What is the nature of this glitch ?

I'm sorry , LaP , but " Time Capsule become too full " is not the cause of my problem .
In fact, I just got done pruning the iMac system hard drive a little  to free up some  10 Gb of new space , yet created only maybe 1-2 Gb of new data to archive. The TC had been doing regular daily backups without issue and Time Machine  was showing me stuff from about ten days back.
The TC informed me it needed 235 Gb of space but only had 34 Gb available. That 235 Gb needed is totally in error.  My problem more resembles corrupt hard disk directories . Maybe Permissions ?  which is why I asked about using Disk Utility.
Yes, I do need a newer larger TC, but pigs don't fly and money does not grow on trees to make tha happen. The backup I have now is fine and should work if I need to restore anything in the forseeable. New data will not be archived, alas.

  • Problem partitioning external hard drive with Disk Utility

I'm trying to create a new partition in disk utility in an external hard drive using disk utility and every time I click Apply it says that "Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and can't continue. Quit and relaunch Disk Utility". It is a 3TB hard disk and I already created the first partition of 2 TB, and when I click the + symbol to add a 1 TB partition and click Apply is when the error shows up. I have restart the mac, unplugged the hard disk but the error still shows up. Anyone has any idea??? Thanks for your help in advance
    David

I solved this issue. I was able to create the partition with the format MS-DOS and then I erased it to the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format.
Now it is working OK. Hope this help someone

  • Disk Management Tool error in Disk Utility

Update: (first, reviewing problem that I and others have been having, including on 10.4.x systems):
When I attempt to repair permissions on my HD with Disk Utility, I get this specific error message: "Disk Utility internal error -- Disk Utility has lost its connection with the Disk Management Tool and cannot continue. Please quit and relaunch Disk Utility" and the repair-permissions will not proceed. It fails to get the proper "correct" permissions info for that drive to allow the repair. The error log points to a file in the Library called "DiskManagementToll" The path is ~/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskManagement.framework/Resources/DiskManag ementTool)
This problem is appearing in many forums here and elsewhere, including 10.4.x systems (like mine) and persists in a few after deleting suggested files. Is there a sophisticated solution that addresses the problem through the DiskManagementTool file by replacing some values or replacing the file from a backup vis SUDO or Root?
Previous posts have focused on Macs running 10.3.x and with iTunes 6.0x installed. Not here, so the problem is more general. None of the "delete iTunes / plists / Chess.app" suggested fixes have worked for me. Also tried running DU from my Tiger install disk; no luck! -- still fails when it tries to determine the correct permissions.
The "DiskManagementTool" file apparently either stores the correct file permissions or handles reading them from the receipts in the Library. If I understand things right, Disk Utility is actually a (user)-permissioned graphic front end, while DiskManagementTool is a Root-user-level tool that actually does the heavy lifting. Can I replace -- and any benefit to that -- or rewrite it with proper access?
There is a complete crash log report in Crash Reporter, by the way. Anyone want the text, and would it help figure out what's happening?
I've tried the suggested deletion of iTunes 6.0.2 or Chess.app and their plists (these and other steps were suggested on MacFixIt at http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060111090035797 the advice is, basically, to delete iTunes 6.0.2 and/or Chess.app and related plist files.) As I said, no luck!
Everyone that I talk to says it MUST be the fault of some other 3rd-party disk utility software.
For what it's worth, I HAVE run Disk Warrior -- and, the drive that's having the problem is a recent reinstall from a backup using Carbon Copy Cloner. The original disk is NOT having such a problem, only the hard drive on my iBook after the reinstall. Don't know if that gives any clues (or to how the link gets somehow disengaged between Disk Utility and the Disk Management Tool file / software).
Any thoughts on that? What about replacing the Disk Management Tool file in the Library or forcing some kind of re-link to it? some Unix guru MUST know a fix!
Obviously, the big worry for me is that I can't update my System to 10.4.5 or anything else without repairing permissions first. This IS a big deal. And others are having the same problem. Help?!?
    New 2 GHz dual g5 , Dual g4, & iBook G4 (recent) Mac OS X (10.4.4)

A system problem was involved that became, briefly, a "known issue" that was solved in the next minor update. Solved, anyway, by the advice given by the last poster. Thanks! SJ

  • Reported Fatal Hardware Error to Disk Utility

I see the following message in my Power Book G4 Disk Utility:
"This drive has Reported Fatal Hardware Error to Disk Utility. If drive has not failed completely, back up as much data as you can and then replace it with a new drive."
I already made a back up my Home folder to my external HD. The install disk utility reports the same and has grey the repair uptions.
The spinning beachball appears constantly when using Safari and iTunes. What should I do?

If your Mac is no longer under the standard 1-yr warranty period or under the 3-yr extended warranty if you purchased the AppleCare extended warranty for your PB, you need to purchase a new internal hard drive that is compatible with your Mac model. This is something you can install yourself or take your Mac to an Apple authorized repair facility to purchase and have a new internal hard drive installed.
The repair facility should include re-installing whichever OX version and all software that was pre-installed and shipped with this Mac when purchased new. If this wasn't Tiger and you purchased a Tiger retail install package, you can re-install the Tiger upgrade yourself and then replace all data from your backup on the new hard drive.

  • Errors in Disk Utility

Hello. I was wondering for some opinions. i was having some problems with permission errors in disk utility so they wanted me to erase and install with a new disc set. So I completely erased the disc and reinstalled just the software on the mac os x discs. Now, after running typical software update and now I have 492 pages of permission errors. I ran it three times so far and it is still coming up with 492 errors on it.
    What could be causing this?

    Hi,
*"i was having some problems with permission errors in disk utility so they wanted me to erase and install with a new disc set."*
    Who is they? Apple?
You have 492 pages of permissions messages or 492 messages?
It won't do any good to keep running it. Go here for information on permissions you can ignore. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448

  • Drive has reported a fatal error to Disk Utility, HELP ME PLEASE!!!

I'm a little worried my Macbook Pro has become an overpriced paperweight.
    Here's what happened:
I had a spare 512MB RAM, which was taken out of my 24" iMac Intel Core 2 Duo when I replced it with a 1GB RAM and, after checking several sources on the web, successfully installed the extra RAM in the MBP.
I restarted the MBP and the new RAM was registered after checking in About this Mac. I then began using the MBP as normal and wrote and saved a Word document. I clicked on the email and Safari icons in the dock and they just kept bouncing in the dock without launching. Pressed Power button - nothing. Took out the battery and replaced it after 30secs and pressed power button. All I got was the grey screen with the Apple logo and the winding circle which stayed like that for 20 minutes.
First reaction was to remove the RAM and restart. Same endless grey screen and winding circle.
Rebooted from CD, checked disk and repaired and said everything was OK. Restarted without CD still nothing.
Tried Archive and Install and came back with an error during installation.
Tried Erase and Install - same error.
Tried to select startup disk and it no longer could find my HD yet Disk Utility could find it and told me everything was OK. Tried resetting PRAM nothing.
Tried to erase the HD and nothing happened. Erasing a HD takes some time, but everytime I hit erase 10 seconds later it was back to the same point where I began
Next tried to create one single partition and struck the message Drive has reported a fatal hardware error to disk utility. Even the lettering for the main drive is now in red.
Do I need to replace the hard drive altogether or is there a solution to this problem. Was it the RAM that brought me undone or was that just a coincidence?
    PLEASE HELP ME!!!

make sure that you haven't used it yet as RAM can only be used in one machine, not transferred to another one (like you did).
Sorry, but that's completely untrue, and I don't know where you might have read or heard such a fallacy. RAM has no registration that even tells a system that it's been used, much less a key that would make it work only in one system. As long as the RAM is properly compatible and precautions are taken not to shock a system with static electricity while removing or inserting the component or causing mechanical damage, a RAM module can be swapped between systems as often as desired.

  • Mac-formatted external HD only access with Disk Utility

    Hello!
I read a lot about problems with Mavericks and WD harddrives. But i did not found anything about my problem:
    - bought a new HD and formatted with Disk Utility
    - copied all important data to it, all fine
    - next day for my surprise i couldn´t see this HD in Finder
    - looked in Disk Utility and the HD is there
    - if i click on the drive and "open" then i can see it in finder and have access to all data, but if i click on "reveal in finder" i can´t see it!
    - i started CarbonCopyCloner and did a complete backup to a new second backup HD, CCC recognized the HD and everything worked fine
    - now the backup HD has the same problem, i can see it only in Disk Utility
    - it seems that the error moved from one drive to the other, so my guess is it has nothing to do with brands or a hardware failure
    - i´m searching now for hours but i don´t find a solution
    - i now have one (very important) data HD and a backup HD as a clone with the same problem
    - all other HD´s i have are showing correctly in finder!
    Does anyone have any ideas?

After hours of searching this is the solution:
    Open Terminal, then
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    killall Finder
sudo chflags nohidden /Volumes/"Name Of Drive"
    killall Finder
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
    killall Finder
    This thread helped me:

  • Problems with Disk Utility & Mounting DMG!! Help!!

Hey guys, im a fairly inexperienced mac user anyways I recently bought a IBOOK G3 with Tiger 10.4 and i'm having major issues with Disk Utility and installing applications.
The issues with D.I are that it loads up then I get the error message "Disk Utlity started but a background process needed in Disk Utility didn't start properly. Please quit and restart Disk Utility. And when I do restart it, i get the same error over and over.
Also my second problem is whenever I try to and install DMG files I get the error: "Broken Pipe" and sometimes "Device Not Configured"
I've tried searching for resolutions for each problem but they both involve the other functioning! I'm really at a loss, i've tried using programs like pacifist to reinstall my original files etc and they haven't seemed to help.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you xxx

Hi Kellie, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD, but saves all your files and gives a new OS...

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.
Report if there were errors please.
