New EXS24 instrument

Hi,
I have some audio loops from a magazine. Each one is for one different note of the same instrument. I would like to make a new instrument from these loops so that I can play it with my keyboard. I've been trying but I don't know how to do it.
One more question, how can I delete the instrument if I don't like it later on?

To properly deleted it might be in the book, but I would just delete it from my instruments folder.
To create the instruments with the EXS you click the edit button from the EXS interface and once inside click (opps, don't have my machine with me..) the first tab on top of menu and select new, then click the zone tab and ask the EXS to "load multiple samples/sound" and a box should pop up asking where to get these sounds, drill to them then click add/add all. Another box should pop up and you want to "load contiguous zones" (that will place them in order starting with C(something)
Please keep in mind I'm raw with LOGIC but this should do it. Look to youtube and this dude SFLOGIC NINJA and his videos are great learning tools. He may not answer all of your questions in the vids, but you get a good nuts and bolts of LOGIC from him.
Also, I suggest NOT deleting any instruments that either came with LOGIC of you created your self. If you mess a set up, you can always edit the instruments.

Old problem new angle:EXS24 instrument audio file not found -but its THERE!

So I know this has been posted on before, but I've read the forums and my problem seems slightly different.
Was trying to open tenor sax, or alto sax.
Created a new EXS24 track. In the Logic Studio Library it comes up with a long list of folders, bottom is '12 Legacy Instruments', inside that all there is is '05 Horns and Woodwinds' and '08 Drum Kits'. I go into Horns and Woodwinds, there are my instruments. When I click them it says not found.
I checked in my finder window, (application support/Logic/Sampler Instruments/ 12 Legacy Instruments/05 Horns and Woodwinds). They ARE there. So that baffles me.
Now, someone said on another forum its because they arent in the right place and SHOULD be in garage band (application support/garage band/Instrument Library/Sampler/Sampler Files/12 Legacy Instruments/05 Horns and Woodwinds), so I copied them from the previously described Logic destination to there.
They STILL aren't working. It seems like Logic is looking in the right place but it says it cant find them?!
Please help!
(P.S - Annoyingly if it comes to reinstalling Logic Studio, I don't think I can do that. I bought my Mac Mini off ebay, and have forgotten the admin password, and have no OS discs to reset it. So until I can do that, I can't install anything (as you need the admin password. Any solutions that don't involve reinstalling Logic gratefully welcomed!)

What I think you have to do is refresh the Spotlight index. Open the prefpanel Spotlight, go to the Privacy Tab, put all your disks on it (just drag 'm), close the panel, reopen it, remove the disks, close the panel, let your Mac sit for an hour or so while it is creating Spotlight indeces from scratch. Use *Activity Monitor* to check if Spotlight is done indexing. If you see MDS or MDWorker still active (=using CPU), it is not done.
O and BTW, you should create an account for yourself of which you do have the admin password, or you will not be able to solve many possible problems.

Question for EXS24 instrument editor experts!

here's what I'm trying to do:
I'm trying to combine a solo violin instrument and a solo cello instrument into one EXS24 instrument that has the violin in the higher octaves and the cello in the lower octaves, not overlapping (to use with my EWI).
These are VSL (Vienna Symphonic) instruments, a different sample every half step, 3 velocity layers (different group for each velocity layer). So each instrument has around 150 audio samples.
Here's what i tried so far:
I opened the violin instrument, I added a new group and named it "solo cello pp". I drag dropped all the cello pp samples into the new group. I chose "auto map" in the dialog box.
OK, when I look in the new group it got all the zone key notes right (zone key note matches the audio sample name)
But... every zone has a key range of "Lo C-2, hi G8" so when I play the patch I'm hearing all the samples playing at once (because every zone has the full key range)
OK ... I can just go type in the correct key range for each zone (like for the A#3 sample: "Lo A#3, hi A#3" etc.) but with 150 samples per inst., that's typing in a field 300 times! Kind of insane! and I plan to build several instruments like this (trombone/trumpet, bassoon/oboe etc.)
Is there a smarter way to do this?
I suppose I could probably just keep the violin & cello instruments separate, constrict their ranges so they don't overlap, have them on separate tracks, record enable both tracks, and play it that way. But it would just be more idiot proof to have it all in one EXS24 instrument.
Any help would be appreciated.

EXS is not the easiest to work with.........
but , do this:
bring two EXS's up on two different channels.
load the vlns in one, the cello in the other.
open the cello edit pane. switch to "group" and select all groups.
open the edit menu and click on "copy".
next, open the vln editor, then click on edit and select "paste".
this should copy the cello in the vln pane.
if they overlap, you'll have to move them an octave and probably limit the range.
save as....... a new patch.

HT3989 i've migrated from my macbook pro to iMac and now some patches of the exs24 instrument do not work in logic

I recently bought a new imac and migrated form my macbook pro. I'm running logic and when i opened one of my logic project files i've been working on, some files (mostly exs24 instrument files) would not load up with the project file...a message was displayed with each file that could not be "detected" with an option to "Continue" or "Search again"...if you "search again" nothing happens and if you "continue" the files ends up loaded up with the exs24 instrument on some tracks not reading the patch file? This also happened with some audio files which would not load with a logic project file? I really do not want to reinstall and risk losing anything more...please help

Migration Assistant seems not to work well for some with Logic. Probably the easiest way to sort this would be to re-install the content.
You could check Library:Application Support:Logic and Library:Application Support:GarageBand for the "missing" files to see if the really are there.
If they are, it may be a Spotlight issue, which can be fixed by 're-building' the Spotlight Index.

Making new EXS instruments show up in the library

Is it possible to make new EXS instruments (such as third-party EXS instruments) show up in the new Library column, and not just the EXS24's own instruments list?
It would be great do access them directly from the main library column.

If you look at the channelstrip, you'll see a white halo around one of the buttons. It defaults to Settings but if you select the Instrument button with EXS instanciated, then the first library column becomes EXS presets.

Converting audio samples to EXS24 instrument

I have an audio track that contains a sequence of samples from a live instrument. The samples run from C0 to C7 in increasing order.
What's the easiest way to turn this into an EXS24 instrument?

First slice the track using the Strip Silence function (in L9 you could also use Flex mode to splice the track), then convert all the resulting regions into new Audio files using the copy/convert function. Then drag all those files into the EXS (hit the edit button first) using the contiguous mapping feature, set the lowest note to C0 or wherever you want the mapping to start.

For those who are following this thread I have received the following info from LPH: it hasn't dealt with this through midi controllers but with key switches in a v. easy to work with fashion, though I would still like to have a result with former, if there is anybody that can give me a clear proceedure. METHOD #1
Create a duplicate track for those instruments which you're keyswitching. Let's just focus on one instrument for now, flute. Create a duplicate track assigned to your flute instrument ("new track with same instrument/channel"). Next, copy all of the regions from the original track onto this track and merge (glue) them to create one contiguous track. Of course if you have only one region for the part, just copy the region over to the new track.
Then go into the piano roll editor and swipe the keyboard on the left in the range of your keyswitches. Then use the command "toggle selection" and hit DELETE. Now you have a region that contains only your keyswitches.
Or, of course, you can just swipe the range that the instrument plays in. Then hit DELETE. Either way...
The final step here is to untick the "score" checkbox for this keyswitch-only region (region parameters). Now, both tracks will still play, except only the actual flute part will appear in your score.
METHOD #2
In the score editor, open the staff style for the part. Set the highest note/lowest note range to (visually) filter out the keyswitch notes. This may seem like the easiest way to do things, but it will require you to have a distinct staff style applied to each part. For example, if you're using the Treble staff style for multiple parts (picc, flute, bass clarinet) and their key switches are in different ranges of the keyboard (as is the case with some libraries), you will need to create duplicates of "Treble", name them accordingly (picc, flute, b.clarinet), assign them to the various regions playing those parts, and then set their highest/lowest note values accordingly.

How do you save sample regions in the EXS24 instrument editor?

Hi There, I don't if my memory has failed me or something was changed in Logic pro 9 but I can't get a EXS24 instrument to save the sample region sections I set?? I open EXS24 click on edit, click on load zone, load a sample, click on edit in sample editor, set the region and then the new region doesn't set inside the EXS24 sample editor window? Tried saving the instrument, but it doesn't up date the selection? It just keeps the entire waveform as the sample? What am I doing wrong here? In the past this was really simple, you just moved the region on the sample area you want and the sample begin and end setting automatically update inside the EXS24 instrument editor window and then you just saved the instrument and each piece of the audio file as and how you set it was then on your keyboard ready to be used. Can anyone help me out here?

Got it to work, seems I had to resave the audio file again... weird glitch...

EXS24 Instrument editor

By hitting certain notes on the keyboard we can trigger different sounds in EXS24.
How can I setup EXS24 Instrument editor so when instrument is loaded it plays the first sound?
The only way to do this is arrange the groups in alphabetical order. Then loaded instrument plays the first group.
That's how it used to be in Logic 7.
But how can I do it in Logic 8?

Your question is a little bit confusing
What are you loading? Factory instrument sets that came with Logic or your own samples?
If you are loading your own samples, after creating a new instrument you need to create zones, where you can define the range and basic note of the samples (and much more).
Probably "all notes play at the same time" happens because you are not assigning zones to the individual samples.
Please start reading at page 520 of the Logic Pro 7 Plug-in Reference Manual for all the detailed information you need.
Hope this gets you on the succesful track of managing the instrument editor, which IMO is beautiful and powerful.

Some EXS24 instruments loads slow

Hi,
Why is it that some of my EXS24 instruments load very slow. Ironicly the worst ones is some which contains only a few very short samples (drums). What can I do to speed up the process?
When I load a song containing the instruments there's no problem. It's when I open the instruments in a new song.

Basic 3 min song loading takes 20 sec and 37 ms (
this is:
EXS24 = 8
TRILOGY =1
SONIK SYNTH =1
COM,EQ,DELAY,GATE,SPACE DESIGN,AD-LIMITER ect =25
Full song 7 min song loading takes 1min 3sec and 53ms
this is:
40 audio tracks
5 Stylus RMX all load with full presets
3 EXS24
2 Hypersonic each loading fully
60 COM,EQ,DELAY,GATE,SPACE DESIGN,ADLIMITER ect
now this will be different from all systems
I know for sure my G5 dual 1.8 with 1gb of rams will take longer to do this
and if add more rams or get a better processor than my G5 dual 2.5 with 3gb of rams will improve the loading time as well
but just having this setup and running the project manager have solved alot of problems when it comes to loading time
without the pro. man. it'll have taking more than 1
not to mention that this is not only EXS24, all the plug-ins are included in the song loading time
especially Hypersonic which takes like 20 sec just to load plus RMX which also takes like 10-15 sec to load as well
so how about you do a test
create 15 instrument channels with just EXS24 then load samples into them, save the project, close logic down then launch again then time it
just incase you don't know, the project manager only works for
EXS24

and logic's plug-ins settings
it does not include 3rd party plug-ins such as SAMPLETANK, STYLUS RMX,HYPERSONIC BFD and all them big dat. plug-ins
so try the test with just EXS24 and see

How would Kirk Hunter EXS24 instruments work with Logic Pro 9

I understand that Kirk Hunter strings are quite good. Does anyone know how the EXS24 version would work in logic pro 9? Is it just a question of putting files in the correct directory so they show up in the media library, or is something else involved?

(Note : The orchestral strings that come bundled with logic are disappointing. For a quantitative example, playing C1 (2 Cs below middle C) of the cello, there is no contribution at the fundamental frequency of ~65 Hz, as can be seen from an EQ analyzer.)

Kirk Hunter's EXS24 instruments work very well in Logic 9.
Drag the instruments folder here: User>>Library>Application Support>Logic>Sampler Instruments. (Or place an Alias of the KH instruments folder at the above location if you have your instruments stored on another drive.)
I placed the instruments in the above location but have the samples on an external drive when using my MPB, and on a separate internal HD in my MP.
Click on Options in the upper right of the EXS24 GUI to access Preferences. Make sure that Search samples on... is set to All Volumes.
The Diamond library is big bang for the buck when buying the EXS24 version. I also have the EXS 24 version of Concert Strings ll. But, it looks like KH is only going to release Kontakt versions of new products. I ended up also buying the Kontakt version of Diamond.

Creating a new software instrument track in Logic Pro 9

When I create a new software instrument track in Logic 9, the newly-created track always defaults to "EVP 88 Electric Piano" instead of "Inst 1" like it's supposed to. Why does Logic do this and how can I restore the settings so that it opens the new track as "Inst 1."

That was added around 9.1.1 - presumably so people wouldn't create an instrument and then ask "I created an instrument, but it don't make no sound."
You can uncheck the open library box or go to HD>Library>App support>Logic>channel strip settings>Instrument>01 Logic instruments and change the one called something like "EVP88 Electric Piano" to just "Electric Piano."

Drum Loops Missing But Plays Fine? EXS24 Instrument "2-step remix.exs"

Half of my drum loops play just great in the loop browser but when I drag them to the playhead I get the error message "EXS24 Instrument "2-step remix.exs" not found." and the same loop that just sounded great in the loop browser instantly morphs into some nasty series of sine wave beeps and clicks. What could possibly cause this?

That does make a lot of sense, I'll check the computers tomorrow when I get back to the studio and see. I usually sling the control over to "never" for putting the computer to sleep but I don't remember doing anything to the HD sleep.

Can't install new loops/instruments in GB '08

I went to install iLife 08 on my iBook yesterday. I did a custom install because I didn't want to install all the apps right away. For Garage Band, I noticed that the option for installing additional loops and instruments was grayed out. It would not allow me to even check it.
What's going on? Why can't I install the new loops/instruments that are part of GB '08?

So, I installed GB 08
Then, I went back to the installer. I can now check the garage band add ons option. Except that I can't check just that. It forces me to check the main garage band install box as well. I assume that means it would re-install GB, just to get those extras??
Also, sounds and jingles still can't be checked. It says there is stuff for GB and iMovie. I can't install iMovie since my G4 ibook won't run it, but I would think I would still be able to get the sounds and jingles to use in GB.

Bug in SURROUND when instnciating new SOFTWARE INSTRUMENT?

This only seems to appear after mix is up to say a dozen tracks.
Whilst working in SURROUND ... I have some audio and some software instrument tracks running ... instanciate a new EX24 or KONTAKT 3 by choosing NEW TRACK with a key command ...... choose NEW SOFTWARE INSTRUMENT .... when you've opened the new instrument, everything in the mix is shunted over toward the left hand side of the room.
There's no apparent way to get the mix back to where it was so you have REVERT TO SAVED?

If so, don't..... Use the New Project command instead
at the startup of the song it creates 5 busses......
using Empty project....... Every new SI.... same issue
It may be you have created a template, or are using one.. that includes those busses....
I do use a template song with some busses, but it creates 2 new if I create a new Software Instrument.
I don't understand this behavior.......
This issue occurs using the command New Software Instrument tracks, and not creating New Audio Tracks
The unique way to avoid this for me is to copy a SI in the Environment and then change its Inst channel....
