New External Display Color Syncing

So I got a refurbished Samsung SyncMaster 932GW for my Late 2006 MacBook to use as a semi-permanent external display. Obviously I'd like it and the built-in screen to look the same, so I set both to use the sRGB IEC61966-2.1 (because neither profile works with the other). For comparison purposes I'm using the test pattern here: http://www.pacificnet.net/~johnr/barsb.html. Both displays are at full brightness (and contrast on the 932GW) and I've turned off the Dynamic Contrast, MagicColor, and other gewgaws on the 932GW.
On the SyncMaster the test pattern looks...right. The white looks as pure as I can tell, and the other colors are what I remember them to be.
But on the Color LCD, it looks crappy. The interface (windows, icons, etc) have a strong bluish cast, and the display overall (esp. the test image) has an overall anemic quality. This might just be due to comparison, but it's still distracting.
Am I going about this whole thing the right way? Is there some other standard (image or profile) I should be using? Or is it an entirely hopeless endeavour to get these two displays to agree?

What I gather from reading magazines and browsing various forums is that most monitors do not quite have the correct colors out of the box, shift over time, and need to be calibrated periodically. Calibration can be software based, using your eyes to calibrate (such as with the color calibration tools provided with OSX), or can use calibration devices, such as HUEY or Colorvision's Spyder 3. Calibration devices actually read your screen colors and tonal settings and adjust them to the standards you select. I've found Huey to be useless on LCDs. Using Spyder 3 has resulted in better colors on my MacBook Pro screen, but I have been unable to get Spyder 3 Elite to match the laptop screen and external monitor colors (Wacom 21ux), even though it is specifically intended to match colors across a numbe of monitors. Would like to hear what progress you make.

  • Top 1/4th of new External Display Dim

I recently purchased an external 20 inch display (Iiyama, 1600by1050@60hz, 32 bit color). The color is great except for the top 1/4 of the display where it is noticeably dimmer. Any ideas what might be causing this?

The same thing is happening to my second-generation 20" 2GHz iMac, just as you describe it. I had the power supply replaced (under warranty) about a month ago and that fixed it. Then five minutes ago it started happening again.
Others have also experienced this problem. See this thread: <http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=976506&#976506>

  • External Display - Blue "sync" arrows/sign

On several occassions, when I add a secondary monitor to my MBP (Viewsonic, projector, etc.) I get a symbol that looks like the blue sync arrows right in the middle of my second display. I cannot get rid of it for the life of me. Of course it goes away when I turn on my mirroring. Any Help?

Well, you can move the file from the desktop back to its original location to at least get back to what you had before.
The file structure under Snow Leopard has changed and it's hard to keep up with this stuff. There is also now a com.apple.WindowServer.plist file in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons that you could try moving to the desktop and restarting. I dunno. Same rule applies.....if it doesn't help, move the file from the desktop back to its original location.

  • External display color negative

Recently I found that when I drag a window from the LCD display of my 2010 MacBook Pro 15" to a Lenovo external monitor, the dragged window will look like a film negative as shown in the pictures below. This not only applies to a browser window but virtually every one including that of Google Chrome, Safari, or even the Finder.
Any suggestion of remedy welcome. Thanks!

  • External display recommendations?

I have a black MacBook (2.0ghz, 2 gigs of ram, etc.) and am in the market for a new external display. I'm currently running a 19" LCD (VGA) as an extended display, but the color is rather miserable and the image quality is awful. I've been leaning toward getting an Apple 23" Cinema display, but before I purchased that I thought it would be a good idea to get some feedback from people who might have had better experience with other displays. I want as much screen real estate as I can power with the MacBook and am desirous of beautiful color. I would also love to be able to plug my xBox into it for the times when the TV is in use, but that's definitely not a deal breaker. I probably need to learn some patience or something.
    Awesome. Thanks.

    hey there MadHatter,
the MacBook specs page allows for support up to a 23" display, but i've connected to a 42" Sony LCD projection HDTV over DVI>HDMI. get one w/ the new ATSC tuner as most of these will have an HDMI input or 2/3. higher contrast ratios(1200:1-i wouldn't get less, & above) will likely cost more as does a larger size(above 26") & will generally have the higher contrast ratios, some up to 15,000:1. 26" and above i feel deliver better "television" picture. get what fits your budget that has the best specs & features. i've got the 42" Sony/HDMI, a 26" Olevia LCD HDTV monitor/DVI(won't go to 1920 x 1080) & a 23" Philips LCD HDTV monitor/DVI. all bought for various reasons @ different times, a couple on sale/cleareance. i also use an optical audio cable w/ the Sony into my Sony AVR.
    good luck, hope this helps.

  • Macbook pro retina quit working with external displays

Just got a new external display, and can't get it to work with my MBP. I tried it via the mini display port and also via the HDMI connection. Then I tried to use my flatscreen tv just to test things out via HDMI and now that doesn't work either, I've done that quite a bit in the past. The only thing thats changed is I updated to Yosemite. I even tried different cables.
    Thoughts?
    Txs,
    Jeff

When I unplug the cable from the mac, the monitor does display this message:
    "No Display Port Cable"
So it does seem like the display knows that its connected to a mac, just nothing shows up. Don't get anything in System Prefs > Displays either.

  • I get glitch lines on external display

Ive noticed on my last monitor and this new one too. On certain web pages or video oriented tasks. Lines show up on the screen. They flash in and out. what could this be...bad video card?
I thought going to a DVI display would help but I guess not.

I've come to a conclusion that when the video card overheats the lines come.
Reason being, I opened the lid and the lines were still there and when I tested a dvd movie on full screen the lines were there. And watching a DVD movie on my display never used to cause lines. But I don't watch many movies on my powerbook.
Before plugging in my new external display I noticed that my powerbook was set on Better Perfomance and never hit sleep mode the whole time I was at work so when I came home the Powerbook was pretty hot.
As time went on with the lid open the lines began disappearing. So I decided to keep it open and not run anything too crazy and as the Powerbook cooled the lines started disappearing.
I ran a full screen movie like a half hour later and received no lines!
And here I am this morning using my lcd for the past hour and a half on internet and again, no lines.
    Hope this helps.

  • IBook G4 - External Display - Sony HS75P

    Hiya,
I am thinking of buying a new external display for my iBook G4 (bought some 2 years ago). The display I have chosen to buy is Sony HS75P which seems to have great reviews.
My question is - will my iBook G4 be good enough to handle the big 17" monitor? HS75P has both Analog and Digital inputs, so I don't have a compatibility problem. But, will the graphics suffer in any way compared to the iBook display itself?
As such I have no plans to upgrade my Mac for atleast a year from now.
    Please help me decide.
    Cheers,
    Shankar.

    Hi,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
when I'm using my external monitor, whether my iBook will go into sleep mode when I close the lid.
No it won't. There's a reed switch by the screen controlled by a magnet on the top case that will cause it to sleep. Yet you can connect your external monitor and wake it with the mouse.

  • Spaces and an external display

I've had a search around and i can't find a way of doing this, maybe someone else has worked it out....
I have a shiny new external display and i'd like to assign a particular space to it - is this possible? otherwise all i end up with is a duplicate of what i have on my MB Pro screen or I have to disable spaces.
    any clues fellow mac fans?

This is what I found works for me. Some programs work fine for this method others don't. I first go in and set all the apps in spaces preferences to the corresponding space they belong to. This gets them to the basic location I want. I usually use two apps together on the two screens such as Bridge and photoshop. Open the application you want to use on the external monitor. It should open on the correct space assigned to it initially.
Now you choose the spaces icon on the dock. This brings up all your spaces with the corresponding external monitor space next to it. Drag the application from the internal space screen to the external space screen. Now choose the app you just moved. This will take you to the correct space and app window. Close the app. When you open the app again it should open with its window in the external monitor. The applications menu bar stays on the main monitor but the window is where you placed it.
As I said this works for most apps but not all. You will find out which ones don't quickly. Then just open them and once you get to the app window drag it over to your external display.
I usually start all my apps I will be working on and arrange them like I want fixing the ones that don't start on the correct display. Then it is easy to change spaces and have my work area ready to go.
One thing I discovered in Pages is if I close a file that is displayed on the external monitor the same file when opened again will show up on that monitor. Comes in handy if you work on multiple documents. You just save the file on the window you want it to appear in the next time you need it.

  • HT1391 I had all of my music on an external hard drive that failed. I have iTunes Match so all of my music was synced with the "cloud". How do I now download and save all of my music back down on a new external hard drive?

I had all of my music on an external hard drive that crashed. I have iTunes Match so all of my music was synced in the cloud. How do I now re-load my music back down onto a new external hard drive?

    Hey Rbe58!
I believe this question can be answered by the information in the following article:
iTunes 11 for Windows: Access all your music anytime, anywhere with iTunes Match
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ph12492
Play or download songs from iCloud
You can play songs directly from iCloud, or you can download songs so you can play them when you’re not connected to the Internet.
If a song is available in iCloud, it has a Download button next to it.
To play the song, double-click it.
To download the song, click the Download button.
After you download a song to a computer, it remains in the computer’s iTunes library, even if you turn off iTunes Match.
To only display downloaded songs in your iTunes library, choose View > Hide Music in the Cloud. This also hides any previous iTunes Store purchases you haven’t downloaded.
For information about downloading and playing songs on an iOS device, see the documentation for the device.
Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

  • Satellite A300-202 - External display turned a strange color

    Hi,
I have a Satellite A300-202 with a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650, and after upgrade from vista to windows 7, my external display turned a strange color, seemed to lose the red color. Never show the white color, in which should show the white color shows the color blue.
I have uninstalled and installed again the graphic card drivers and update the new drivers but dont solved this trouble. My external monitor it's ok because I have tried with other laptop and don't have this trouble. I have also tried my laptop with other monitor and have the same trouble.
Anybody ever had this problem, someone who can help me?
    Thanks,

    Hi Xardas,
Yes I have problems only with the external monitor.
I tried both. Now I have the new beta version to the windows 7 64bits, downloaded from the amd/ati site, but I have tried also with the version available in the toshiba drivers page to my A300-202, and had the same problem.
Yes I have installed the new version of the BIOS too.
    Thanks,

  • External display scrolling causing loss of color

I've started running my MacBook Pro with an external display and this strange bug with scrolling has started coming up: After running for a while, a single-app will start to desaturate windows when they scroll. I've seen it happen in the Finder, Safari and Xcode.
Only the part of the window that has scrolled will lose color (the color actually fades as it scrolls) -- anything new scrolling into the window is bright and colorful when it first appears, then it loses color too. This ONLY happens when scrolling.
The display is a Samsung 226BW on my Leopard 10.5.1 running original MacBook Pro. (The original Core Duo MBP.) I'm using DVI-D to hook it up. I'm usually running the external monitor by itself (with the MBP lid closed to deactivate the internal display).
Quitting the app and restarting seems to fix it, but this is a big hassle for obvious reasons (especially when the app is the Finder ;P)
And here I was thanking my lucky stars that I haven't had quick user switching kill my display calibration anymore on Leopard =)
    Any ideas would be appreciated!

    I'm having a similar problem.
MDD G4, ATI Radeon 9000 Pro connected to a FujitsuSiemens Scaleoview 24".
In Safari for example the screen brightness reduces suddenly whilst scrolling, but literally from one pixel to the next! If I scroll back one pixel it brightens again. A similar thing can happen simply by going from one tab to another.
In the finder it can happen when the dock appears or by simply calling up certain windows. Restarting the finder seems to cure it for a while.
I'm starting to think that it maybe has something to do with Core Image/Quartz Extreme because it only seems to occur in Apple apps (Finder, Mail, Safari, etc).
I've tried all of the Monitor, Energy Saver, etc etc settings but to no avail - similarly, any ideas would be much appreciated!

  • Color management on an external display

I'm using a ColorEdge CE210W monitor as an external display for an Apple MacBook, and I'm having trouble getting images to display on the CE210W consistently *across applications*.
According to OS X's ColorSync Utility, the CE210W is the default display (it's the one with the OS X menu bar). OS X's System Preferences utility confirms that a reasonable color profile is selected for it. (The MacBook's built-in display uses it's own profile.)
As a test image, I have an 8-bit RGB TIFF with an embedded sRGB profile. I'm displaying the image only on the CE210W; I do not use the MacBook's built-in display. It appears differently in OS X's Preview application and Adobe Photoshop CS4. I'm using Photoshop's default color management settings, which means that the RGB working space is sRGB. Photoshop seems to confirm that it's idea of what the monitor's profile is what System Preferences says it is. I can't see a reason why the two programs wouldn't agree on the display of the image.
Now, suppose I log out, unplug the monitor, and log back in. When I open the same image again in Preview and Photoshop, now the two programs display it identically.
Does anyone have an idea about what's going on here? With the CE210W plugged in and set as the primary/default display, I've tried to make sure everyone agrees on the monitor's profile and working color spaces, but somehow images don't display identically in different programs. Without the CE210W plugged in and using the MacBook's display, everyone happily agrees.

Having read here and on other threads about 10.5.7 causing problems, etc.....
I decided to try to boot my new MB White (Apr 2009) with another external startup drive that contained 10.5.6. (I have a small problem where the DVI mode overscans the external monitor and it clips the top tool bar}.
Only trouble was, it was from my G4 iBook (2004). So I expected the white MB to reject that iBook G4 startup disk.
It did not. It worked as is with no workaround steps needed. Oh, I then tried that DVI mode but that didn't fix.
    Sometimes things just get weird.

  • External display orange color hue

No matter how I calibrate the colors my external display always has an orange hue.

Have you tried another display? If you did and it still does it, I would say you may have a hardware problem with your logic board. Try running your hardware tester once.
