New Extreme vs. Graphite & Snow

Hi all
I'm considering the new airport extreme for the simple reason that we remodeled our basement and are now having mega connection issues with our airport extreme graphite and snow which is upstairs. Now with the addition of walls and a ceiling, and the fact that my mac is in the basement and the snow and graphite is upstairs, the reception is horrible: drop outs, weak signals, difficulty connectimg.
the question: since the new airport extreme is supposed to broadcast further with a stronger signal, will that mean it can penetrate walls and ceilings more efficiently than the older technology?
thanks in advance

Mac Mini Mac OS X (10.4.1)

I wouldn't count on it. There seem to be no answers to the poor performance problems with the AE in various firmware levels.
Go with a cheaper dLink or LinkSys with g & n capabilities. I think you'll be much happier.
I speak from personal and painful experience. The AE is much slower than the dLink I bought, and connections are intermittent with the AE, whereas with the dLink, all is well. This with an iMac from 2007 with all the latest Leopard patches.
Best of luck with your issues.

  • Airport Extreme or Airport Snow/Graphite?

    Hi Folks,
I've got a collection of machines that I'd like to use to experiment/learn about LANs but want to be on the right page. From what I understand, the latest airport base station (Extreme?) will accept machines equipped with the latest and including the original cards, but setting up a network with the original bases (Graphite/Snow) will not allow clients equipped with the later cards (Extreme). Is this correct? Also, I'd like to mix in PC machines into the LAN. Wouldn't it be a mistake to get the earlier base stations (Graphite/Snow) if I plan on future clients with Express cards? But, having an Express station would allow both Express and orginal airport equipped machines. Correct? There's backward compatibility with the Express. I have two Mac towers with original airport cards, one laptop equipped with original. I suppose if I just wanted to keep the LAN with only machines equipped with original cards, the earlier base stations would be fine. But this would liimit my ability to allow addition of future machines equipped with the current cards. Yes? I hope I haven't confused anyone. Just don't want to plunk down my hard earned money on the wrong base station.
    Thanx in advance.

No, 802.11g (Extreme) clients can connect to an original Apple base station (802.11b). 802.11g is backward compatible.
Also, I'd like to mix in PC machines into the LAN.
PCs can connect to Airport networks.

You mean Extreme cards, and the faster 802.11g is better than 802.11b for internal file transfers, but if you have a slow internet connection and that is what you are just using then 802.11b is usually sufficient.
Personally I would get an 802.11g base station.

There would be no speed benefit to your 802.11b clients in having an 802.11g base station. However you would be able to use WPA which is more secure than WEP, so is certainly something to think about.

No, Extreme (802.11g) clients will be able to connect to an 802.11b base station.

  • New Extreme and New Powerbook Compatibillity

I have just plugged in my new Extreme base station. I have instantly got a decent signal and connection via a Netgear router. However, the front of the base station is flashing amber. We also have a PC in the house which requires the hexadecimal equiv to get on the network. When I open Airport Admin Utility, to get the details, the base station is listed but when I click on it, I get a drop down message telling me that it does not support this base station. My knowledge is limited but I suspect the software I am trying to use is not the correct version. It is showing as airport admin Utility for graphite and snow v4.2.5. any help would be greatly appreciated.

You would be better using the AIrport Utility to configure the Airport Extreme N base station, it comes on the disk in the same box. I think its at ver 5.1 now.

  • AEBS Graphite & Snow and Express Questions

Just moved my mac mini into a refinished basement and now am having drop out problems with the AEBS Graphite & Snow (it's now having to go through several walls, carpet and a new ceiling). The Graphite & Snow is on the main floor, where the cable modem is, and where it has to be since my wife's work computer is there; her PC cannot be wireless on account of work security.
I was wondering if getting an airport express would help strengthen the signal, since it can be used as a range extender?
Or would getting a new Airport Extreme serve the same purpose as adding an Express to an older model Graphite snow?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

The problem is that the Graphite and Snow can't be extended wirelessly. Even WDS isn't an option with them.

Typically silly IT nonsense. Do their meetings require Maxwell Smart's Cone of Silence? (What???)
I suppose they don't allow cell phone use either.

  • After the Airport update today, Airport Utility no longer sees my new Extreme or my 2 new Airport Express relay stations (same network); however, my internet is working and all Airports are green?

After the Airport update today, Airport Utility 6.0 no longer sees my new Extreme or my 2 new Airport Express relay stations (same network); however, my internet is working and all Airports are green?  I'm running Lion on my iMac and updated when Airport Utility prompted me to do so a few hours ago.  After applying the updates is when Airport Utility stopped seeing my routers.  But they are working?  Thoughts?

Did you remember to completely power cycle the entire network?
You would want to do this after any update or change to the network.
If you did not do this yet......things are out of sequence.
Power off everything on the network.....all devices.....power down order is not important
    Wait a few minutes
Start the modem first and let it run a minute or two by itself
Start the next device connected to the modem the same way
Work your way out on the network starting each device about a minute apart
    Check the network

  • Can the new Mac Mini boot Snow Leopard from an external hard drive?

I currently boot my 2009 Mac Mini from a FW800 external drive with 10.6.8. If I just plug my external drive into a new 2011 Mac Mini, will it boot into Snow Leopard if I set it as the startup disk or will I get a kernel panic?

I bought a 2011 Mac Mini, which came with Lion installed. I thought maybe I could repartition it and have a Snow Leopard partition. So I repartitioned it (500gb split into two 250gb partitions). I named the new partition "SnowLeopard" just to make it easy for me to tell the difference.
I attached the external DVD and put in a Snow Leopard installer disc, holding down the C key so it would boot and install from that, but it just spun for awhile. Doesn't appear to work.
Then I read somewhere else that someone had managed to clone a copy of Snow Leopard onto an external drive and boot from that. In their situation they were talking about a MacBook, but the principle seemed sane.
So I rebooted, holding down the T key to put the Mac Mini into Target hard disk mode, and attached it via Firewire to another MacMini (circa 2008 or so, not sure of year, but it was upgraded last year to Snow Leopard and has been upgraded along and along). Then I used Carbon Copy Cloner to copy Snow Leopard (that is, the entire hard disk-- System and all applications and data) to my newer Mac Mini's "snow leopard" partition.
For yucks, when it was done cloning, I restarted the older Mac Mini, and had it boot from the newer Mac Mini's snow leopard partition--- it worked! To make it easy to tell the difference, I changed the desktop background to something completely different. I think I tried booting from Lion but I can't remember if that worked.
Then I rebooted the newer Mac Mini, which booted up in Lion, of course. Going into System Settings, I changed the startup disk to the "snow leopard" partition, and rebooted, and it booted up in Snow Leopard.
I have yet to test the applications on the Snow Leopard partition. Another problem has arisen.
Because with both of the Mac MInis being active on the network, they both had the same computer and user name. So I renamed the newer Mac Mini to something completely different, and changed the password.
Unfortunately, now I cannot change any other setting in the System Settings that requires a password. While the newer Snow Leopard lets me log in with the new user and new password, whenever I try to click the "lock" icon to change something, I'm prompted for a username and password. Apparently this is some different username and password than either the new or old username/password.
I've tried various combinations of both: new user/old password, old user/new password, old user/old password, etc.
So if you do what I've done, be careful about changing the username and password on your cloned computer. I think it may be wiser to create a new user and then delete the old cloned users. I may just have to re-clone the old Mac Mini to the new one again.
If anyone has any ideas about this password conundrum, please pass along!

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. We're users here and do not speak for "Apple Inc."
Power on the computer and insert the DVD immediately.
Hold down the 'C' key to boot from the Snow Leopard DVD.

After selecting the appropriate language, if necessary, select Utilities, and Disk Utility.
You'll likely need to partition and format the new drive before it's recognized.

  • Unable to Print with HP 4215 and New Extreme N

    Hello:
I have the new Airport Extreme N, upgraded from the previous Extreme model.
In the past, I have been able to operate my HP All In One 4215 from the USB port in the back of the Airport.
With the new N station, I can not.
In the Airport Utility, it will recognize the printer name.
Using the 3.x driver, I was able to add the printer, but the print queue would lock up.
I went to HP and updated the driver to v.4, and it won't let me add the printer at all, giving me a error code.
I followed the advice of iFelix using the HIJPS drivers via HP IP Socket printing and the computer sends data to the printer but nothing comes out.
My Extreme is set up as WEP Personal/WEP2.
I don't want to have to buy a new printer if I don't have to and I assumed that becuase this printer worked with the old station, it would work with the new.
Printer works great directly connected to the PowerMac.
If anyone has any advice, please help. I eventually need this printer to work with two wireless macs and one PC laptop.
    Thanks in advance.

Do you still have the old Extreme base station?
You could connect the old Extreme to the new Extreme by ethernet and connect the printer to the old Extreme base station, ensuring that IP address distribution is not enabled on the old model.

  • I can't get my new Extreme to configure my existing Airport devices.

I'm replacing an older Extreme which connected to several Airport devices using 802.11n at 5ghz. The new Extreme is the latest version from the Apple store. The new one works fine - I can get to the Internet etc., but I haven't been able to get it to connect with the other Airport devices on my network.
I have the IP addresses for each of the devices to be connected, and I have the correct passwords, but when I try to configure them in Airport Utility it starts as though it is going to read the configuration but then says it is unable to do so. I saw a support article saying this could be because IPv6 is not turned on, but I've checked and it is.
When I go back to the older Extreme, it sees everything and the network works fine.
I'm accessing via a two year old MacBook Pro. OS is 10.10.1. Airport Utility is 6.3.4. In both cases, my settings are to create a network in bridge mode.
I'd be grateful for your suggestions please.

When you change the network you need to do full factory reset on all the airport devices.. and redo the setup from scratch.
If you have issues doing that then you need to plug in via ethernet to whichever airports are not working and manually fix them.. you cannot do it automatically or by wireless since you have changed the network around.

  • Connect 2 new extreme in the same net.

    Hello!
I have 2 new extreme and I want to connect them to expand the area of my wireless in the house.
But it does not seem to make me do this. it say that I have to change the net when I try to install the 2. one.
is there somebody who knows how to do this?
Step by step would be fine!
    thanks!

I just finshed replacing 2 expresses that I was using with my extreme with two extremes for a total of three extremes on my network. I upgrade mainly for the ability to share disk's at each location as well as having the additional ports. Cost difference of 70 bucks seemed trivial.
I set the first using the create network option.
I set up the 2 additional's using the extend a network option and using a ethernet cable. Keep in mind, that if you try to do this using only a wireles connection, you can't manage extreme's that are not part of you current network. You will have to join the network of the extreme you wish to add to your core network, then rejoin your core network to finish the config.
One thing I learned from this is that interface robustness is not compatiable with a multilple extreme network. As soon as you enable interface robusness, your extreme's will go off line.

  • Linking Express (older) with the new Extreme

Hello all. I have a question. I had an old express (not n capable) and just got a new Extreme. My question is, is it possible to link the two together wirelessly, with the extreme as the internet, but still being able to use the Airtunes function of Express? To be specific, I have my music folder on an drive plugged into my Extreme. However, I would like to also play that music from the Express via airtunes. Since I cannot switch to that base Express station without loosing connection to my music, I'm wondering if it is possible to have the express share the connection with the extreme to allow for one big happy music playing network???
    Thanks!

You can connect the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) as a "wireless client," and be able to access both the Internet and stream iTunes at the same time.
AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - iTunes Setup
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
    AirPort > Base Station
o Base Station Name: <rename or leave default>
    o Base Station Password: <enter desired password>
    o Verify Password: <re-enter desired password>
o Remember this password in my keychain: (optional)
    o Set time automatically: (unchecked)
    AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    o Network Name: <existing AEBSn's wireless network>
o Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
o Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
o Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
    Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)
o iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    o iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    o Verify Password: (optional)
o Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
o Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Want new Mac Pro With Snow Leopard

I am after a new Mac Pro with Snow Leopard.
I understand that some of the newer Mac Pros can have Snow Leopard installed.  Some tell me that in the recent past Apple made a change that made installation of Snow Leopard difficult or impossible on a Mac Pro.
Does anyone know with a reasonable degree of certainty how to tell if a given Mac Pro can have Snow Leopard installed?
I called Apple about a refurbished Mac Pro, they don't know what operating system it will come with!  And they don't know if it will include OS installation disks.

For what it is worth, I recently went through this drama.
    Well, it's worth a lot!
it is theoretically possible for Apple to modify the firmware to prevent Snow from booting, but my experience is that this has not happened yet.
How long ago did you purchase your Mac Pro? (I miss the old days, when users would modify their own firmware.)
See if you can buy from a seller who will let you test this out. There are some nice retailers out there, especially when you are dropping $1000s on a new Mac Pro.
I've been looking for a while now, Mac Pro sellers that have Snow Leopard know how valuable there machines are. There are no bargains if you want snow leopard.
We couldn't install Snow directly on the Mac Pro, so I installed on another computer (an older Mac Pro), and updated to 10.6.8 and swapped the drive across. This worked without issues.
    I currently own a 2008 Mac Pro (2,1) with 10.6.8
See if you can buy from a seller who will let you test this out.
Why not Apple?  They have a 15 Day return policy.   When I called Apple recently the person I spoke to suggested this.

  • How can I get my photosmart 3180 to work with my new extreme

I have looked around here, and just can't figure this out, please someone help. I just purchased a 3180 hd with my macbook. Was printing wirelessly fine with my previous hd and new extreme. Now this one isn't working and hp said that it is not a supported wireless printer. Why on earth would apple sell this printer then.
Could someone please tell me how to make this printer work over my new airport extreme base. PLEASE

Hey Gabriel (and anyone else interested)
I was glad to find your post as I had the same issue. My HP Photosmart C3180 would not appear anywhere with my new Airport Extreme 802.11n. I got it to work, but print only (no scan):
First, remove the HP drivers that you may already have on your Mac. Go to Applications, Hewlet-Packard, and run the Uninstall program. Then go to Utilities, and run Activity Monitor. Locate the handful of activites that are HP related (I had 4) and remove them. Empty the Trash, then Restart. At this point you should be free of HP drivers.
My setup is with an AirDisk and the printer, both USB to the AEBS through a simple USB hub. While the printer and the Extreme don't seem to get along, I found a thrid party driver that glues it all together nicely.
    http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php3
Download the installer for Gimp-Print 5.0. After you run the install, simply go to System Preferences, Print & Fax. Click on the + in the lower right hand part of the screen and new window appears. Click on "Default Browser" in the upper right hand corner and you should see "HP Photosmart C3100 Series" appear with the Bonjour connection. (Make sure, of course, you are connected to your wireless network, everything is hooked up, the printer is on, and Bonjour is enabled).
that was it! I printed the first page I had open in Preview and it worked flawlessly.
Now, when I want to scan.... I'll probably just do this whole thing backwards and hook it up with the USB cable to my Mac. We'll cross that bridge next time.

  • Using new Extreme N in mixed environment, seems slower than plain old G...

I got a new Extreme N couple days ago. Installed it as the main base, with an older Airport Extreme and an Express as WDS stations.
My MacBook Pro does not have N hardware in it (grrrr, don't get me started . But my wife's MacBook does. I got the N because I really want a networked hard drive and figured we'll all have N at some point.
I understand that the network speed gets knocked down to G speed if there are non N clients on it. However, I swear it seems noticeably slower overall than my plain old G network.
Anyone else feeling like a mixed network is slower than plain G?
Also, does anyone have a sense for how security options impact peformance?
    Thanks.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I'm in a similar position, picking up the new AE this weekend, and form what I've read there's a better way, and here's what I'm going to do, maybe you'll want to try it:
-Setup the new AEx as an N-only network, ramped up.
-Connect either the older AEx or EXp via ethernet to it, and hang it off there in bridge mode.
-Try to put some distance between the two, at least 20 feet.
-You can set it up as a g-only network if you like, and it'll handle wireless communications from you, and the the other g base station, also offering it's services on your total network, but without decreasing the n-speed.
Hope it helps. For more info on setting this up, consult the 'Designing Airport Extreme-n Networks" manual, here (PDF).

  • Setting up New Extreme

MacPro 2008, latest OS, latest Airport Util (6.3); when I replaced my old unit (Extreme Ver 5.0) with new (A1521), the new Airport Extreme would not connect to the Network, nor did iy see my Airport Express that I am using to extend the network. I have multiple networks--including a 5Hz and a Gust Network. I was trying to create a Network settings file which I could use to recreate the old networks on my new Extreme. When I open Network settings and select a particular Network and then access the scroll ladder (next to the +/- box at bottom of list)--the Export Configurations line is grayed out. Is there any better way to save your old saettings to use when you get a new Extreme?anyway to simplfy the new connections. Additionally, the new Extreme would not connect to the Internet yet modem ok and green lights on the back of the Extreme showing connections active; nor would it see the Airport Express extender I set up. Thanks in advance for asny suggestions

ufbrad24, Welcome to the discussion area!
FiOS does not require a modem. The Actiontec device is a router only.
You could replace the Actiontec completely with the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS). Many have discovered that this can be done by a quick call to Verizon.

  • New Extreme missing some features

What happened to the wall mount kit on the new Extreme? Am I supposed to find that old roll of duct tape and tape it to the wall?
How to you import/export MAC addresses from the ACL?
    MA073LL/A

On the Access Control panel, You simply click on the '+' then enter the various Airport ID's (MAC address of your wireless cards) and a description (computer name).
To import a bunch of them from a text file, create such text file with one line per entry and a <Tab> between the two fields:
    010203040506<Tab>Computer Name
The first 12 characters are the 6 Hex numbers of the MAC address, sometimes printed as 01:02:03:04:05:06. The second field is an arbitrary client computer identifier of your choice.
Use the *v button to find the Import/Export feature.
    Hope this is helpful.
