New FCP X User Question - MXF File Names in Event Library

Hello,
I have noticed that my imported mxf files are named by the date and time created, and not by the actual file name when recorded. Is there a way to show the originating name as well as the date and time created within the event library?
Thanks,
GL

You can't relink files in FCPX. Best way to rename clips is within FCPX itself.
final
Batch rename clips using a naming preset
1. In the Event Browser, select the clips you want to rename.
2. To open the Info inspector, click the Inspector button in the toolbar (shown below), and click the Info button at the top of the pane that appears.
3. Choose Apply Custom Name from the Action pop-up menu          and choose a naming preset from the submenu.
The clips selected in the Event Browser are renamed.

See my updated answer. The double quotes need to be removed. Also note that you need to use $item.File.Name
and not $item.Name to get the name of the files.

  • Adobe Premiere CS6 'Create new Trimmed Project' Crash with .MXF files

Yesterday I started to back up all our students work, and found that the "Create New Trimmed Project" no longer works in CS6 with .MFX files.
Adobe Premiere CS6.0.3,  crashes when I try to "Create New Trimmed Project" under "Project Manager"
This only happens when there are .MXF files in the Sequence.
As we use Panasonic P2 cameras at this university, this is a problem, as this is the format that they shoot in.
As a test I have made a Project with only one .MXF file placed on the sequence, and it crashes.
This happens on my Macs and Windows machines with Adobe Premiere CS6 .
Adobe Premiere CS5.5 works fine, and does not crash.
    Unfortunately I cant save a CS6 project as a CS5.5
If you don't have any .MXF files to test this,
You can make your own .MXF files by exporting any video file as "MXF OP1a" or "P2 Movie" Format, (the Preset setting is irrelevant - any preset will cause it)
    P.S.
Using "Collect files and Copy to new Location" under "Project Manager" works fine, but does not reduce project size as much.

I also discovered this behavior last summer.  Unfortunately the best (lame) answer I could find was that "Some formats, such as Long GOP based media files, cannot trim media, or add handles."  Source:  http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS1c9bc5c2e465a58a91cf0b1038518aef7-7c72a .html
That's not very specific, but in my case at least (and it sounds like in your case, too) .MXF may be another file type that cannot be trimmed.  If I remember correctly, the answers I got from others was that they were able to export fine.  My machine (and maybe yours) has an issue that nobody else seems to have encountered.  So none of the prescribed remedies allowed me to move forward in this regard.
After much searching, asking and several suggestions from various Premiere communities, I gave up and moved on.
Use Remove Unused and then Collect Files and Copy to New Location.  At least that can help you if you have a lot of clips.  In my case, it didn't help much, because my very short clips were edited from very long takes, so as Premiere sees it, not much was "unused".
Be aware that "Project Manager does not copy and collect After Effects compositions that are dynamically linked to an Adobe Premiere Pro project. Project Manager does save the Dynamic Link clip in the trimmed project as an offline clip, however."
Wish I could offer you more.

  • Rename files and move them into new folders with part of original file name

I have tried using automator and other programs such as name Name Mangler with no luck.
I am trying to have an AppleScript run when files are added to a folder, using a service through Automator.
File names come in 9 different suffixes, all with the same prefix.
    Example:
    nonspecificprefixSUFFIX
    nonspecificprefixOTHERSUFFIX
    nonspecificprefixALSOSUFFIX
I am trying to get the program to create a folder named after the prefix, then to remove the prefix from the files after moving them into this folder.
There are 9 different suffixes that should remained unchanged.
End goal would be to have child folders named nonspecificprefix, nonspecificprefix2 etc each with 9 files only containing the suffix portion of original name.
If anyone has any tips to get me on the right path that would be much appreciated! I have thousands of files to rename and move so this would save me loads of time!

    Erwin,
I was not able to systematically examine this issue, because it occurred on a production system and, of course, I uninstalled the Adobe iFilters as soon as I read that they may delete pdf files. Before the uninstallation I noticed the AR9 folders appearing on c:\ and moved them from time to time to another folder. Using the search function inside this folder, I found that all files were present in duplicate at least. I concluded, that after moving the AR9 folders they were recreated containing the same files. Consequently, these files cannot have been deleted. Searching for the origin of these files I found that they were part of pdf portfolios, therefore my conclusion that they are part of the indexing mechanism of the portfolios. What I have not done (and what I am not going to do since it is a production system) is to fill a folder with pdfs and track what is happening to the files.
In case of my server, I think that the iFilters did not delete any files. Of course I cannot say what happens on other systems. I am definitely not going to reinstall the iFilters before knowing what they a really doing to the files.
Not sure if this is of much help
    Michael

  • Question on file names

    Hi,
I just picked up a 500 gig hard drive and I would like to start to import about 50 mini dv tapes.
I started the first one and the names of the files show in as New Event 9-29-07 Day 1 , Day 2 etc.
I guess this is some type of automatic file numbering system. The date of 9-29 is an insignificant date as it is just the date I am importing.
I was wondering if there is way to name the clips the date the video was taken, and can this happen automatically?
in addition how do I change the clip names that I already imported. I hope I don't have to constantly name every clip manually.

As I write this, FootTrack is capturing straight from my camera's DV tape. It is storing it on my hard drive in a separate folder. When the clips are organized, I can then export them to iMovie.
It can also import as references—not copies—iMovie containers and catalogues the clips in them, saving them back to iMovie. So it can track iMovie projects as well. You can even compress as you import from camera or other sources.
It can also handle most compression formats available to QT both reading and compressing.
So you can store them in iMovie or outside. Compressed or not. It's up to you. The only real editing feature is clip splitting.
What FootTrack excels at is cataloging tapes and clips, giving them keywords within its database, and, most important, organizing the whole thing using very precise date and time stamps.
It's not the prettiest program with the brushed metal look, but it is very, very powerful, flexible, and well thought out. Plays nice with Final Cut in the same way as iMovie. Developer support is terrific and he's working on a new version. The cost is reasonable for its power and the try-before-you buy is great.

  • P2 MXF file name changing

I know I can re-name the user clip name but my understanding is not to change the actual clip name.
Problem is when I want to import a clip into Boris Red for example, Boris looks for clip names which as we know are just a bunch of numbers/letters.
Is it OK to rename clip names using P2 manager or P2 fordge?
    Thanks for any input.
    Mark Voigt

I would suggest you export the clip as an AVI intermediate for use in apps outside Premiere such as Boris.

  • Set unique file name for document library in SharePoint 2013

    Hi,
I have document library in the sharepoint 2013 with two dropdown fields-dept name, dept id.
My requirement is to create a namiing convention for each file uploded in the document library.
So the naming convention should be "deptname-deptid-filename-Id".
I tried this naming convention using workflow as below-
In this case ,first I attach the file and then it asks for dept name & id,Whwn i input these value,it shows error message as this file is modified by you at this point of time.On cancel it saves the attached file but does not save the deptname and dept
    id.
please help if any idea or suggestion.
    Thank you.

The only way I've ever seen this work while adding a new file is to use an Event Reciever.  Build an Event
Receiver that fires whenever a file is added and have the code change the name of the file from whatever the user titled it to the naming convention you are using.

I have read through some of the tutorials that you have directed me too and they are very useful, thank you. however there are still a few things that i am not clear about. I am using net beans 5.0 I have placed a text file named Results.txt into the project at the root so the program can view it.
When I use the code that you provided me with, does it matter where the file is, or will it look through everywhere on the hard drive to find a match?
This code compiles but at run time it comes up with this error
    run-single:
    java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: NamedFile
    Exception in thread "main"
    Java Result: 1
BUILD SUCCESSFUL (total time: 3 seconds)

// this Scanner is used to read what the user enters
        Scanner user = new Scanner( System.in );
        String  fileName;
        System.out.print("File Name: ");
        fileName = user.nextLine().trim();
File file = new File( fileName );     // create a File object
// this Scanner is used to read from the file
        Scanner scan = new Scanner( file );
while( scan.hasNextInt() )   // is there more data to process?
          num = scan.nextInt();
          square = num * num ;
          System.out.println("The square of " + num + " is " + square);
}his is the code that i used. It is the same as the code you posted for me (on chapter 23 I/O using Scanner and PrintStream) Sorry im just really stuck on this!!

  • Exported videos have weird file names FCP 7

I've been having this issue for a while and just now it bothered me enough to search for it and ask if anyone else has this specific problem.  When I export videos out of FCP 7, sometimes the exported file name ends with lots of numbers and letters instead of the name I specified.  Why does this happen?  How do I make it stop?

Why does this happen?  It happens to me sometimes when I have long filenames. It never seems to affect the clip, just the name.
How do I make it stop?  uh...  stop exporting?

  • RH10 variable and build tag source file names

I'm using RH10 and outputting to WebHelp. My company requires that I archive project source files to our CVS via Eclipse. I am not using RoboSource_Control and must use the company's development resources for archiving.
Since archiving the initial project, I have been uploading only source files with modified dates.
However, I have discovered that the files I thought were storing user variables and build tags are not the correct files to archive. Since I am uploading all files with a newer date and that's not working, I need to know the user variable source file name and the build tag source file name that stores the currently defined variables and build tags.
I have already tried the WebHelp forum and was directed to this forum to pose the question because I'm looking for source file information instead of output file information.
    Thanks for your help!
    karen

Yes, Eclipse does work that way. However, we do not use our development directory as the local Eclipse repository. I need to move changed files to the local repository (stores all source files in the project) so that Eclipse can upload changes to the server. Yes, this is planned redundancy.
That said, it is not acceptable to spend the time copying all files in the large projects from the work folder to the local repository. I simply need to know which individual files to copy that include the currently defined variables and build tags. Note, we do not copy the SSL folder output files to our local source file repository, or other associated reference files that are not actually project source files.
Can you find someone who knows which files I need?
    Thanks,
    karen

  • Cannot duplicate event due to same file name

I'm trying to archive some video projects my boss has made using Final Cut Pro X 10.0.7 on OS X 10.7.5. The problem I'm having is that I cannot "Duplicate Project + Used Clips" like I have done in the past because this project uses clips from three different events, and each of these events contains files that happen to have the same names as files in the other events.
    For example:
    Event A
    - 00000-1.m4v
    - 00000-2.m4v
    - 00000-3.m4v
    Event B
    - 00000-1.m4v
    Event C
    - 00000-1.m4v
    - 00000-2.m4v
So let's say the project he's created uses all these clips. If I attempt to "Duplicate Project + Used Clips", it won't work because 00000-1.m4v from three different events is used in the project. Apparently FCP is written in such a way that it allows you to fall into this trap. What it should be doing is either not allowing you to import a file into an event if that file name already exists in another event, or it should be smart enough to rename duplicate files on-the-fly when exporting (for example, 00000-1-1.m4v and 00000-1-2.m4v). But it does neither of these things.
The problem here is that these are the three events:
    Event A = 108 clips
    Event B = 68 clips
    Event C = 80 clips
All FCP will say is that "two or more media files use the same name - rename the file or files and try again". Only it's not talking about the name of the file from within FCP -- it only cares about the file name as seen in the Finder. So even if I went into event A and put "A-" in front of all the clilp names, it doesn't matter, because it's not really "A-00000-1.m4v" -- the file is still named "00000-1.m4v" in the Finder, and the problem is unresolved.
Does anyone know any way of sorting out this problem without a massive amount of digging around, renaming files by hand and relinking?

I'm still stuck on this problem and in a couple of days I'm going to be sitting in on a webinar that will discuss archiving in FCP X.
I have tried several things and if I'm missing something I'd like someone to let me know.  I also cannot find much on this subject which is very surprising...or I'm not searching in the right places.  I'm going to submit feedback to Apple as follows:
Error:  “The operation cannot be completed.  Two or more media files use the same name.  Rename the file or files and try again.”
Operation attempted:  Duplicate project with used clips.
Second operation attempted:  Consolidate project media > Copy used clips only.
Cause:  Two or more events contain clips with the same name.
    Eg.
    event-20130126
              GOPR0002.mp4
    event-20130220
              GOPR0002.mp4
    Background:
This video project resulted in a one hour documentary that used recordings from 6 different cameras shot over a span of 4 months.  Each day’s recording, for the most part, was broken into separate fcp events.  This resulted in 48 events.
AVCHD imports result in media files whose name reflects the date and time of the recording which makes each of the imports’ media file names unique, even across all events.
Imports from cameras such as GoPro’s Hero use their own original file names such as GOPR0001.  Therefore media file names are not unique across all events.
Due to render and export problems, the video was broken up into 14 separate FCP X projects, aligned with what would ultimately be a “chapter” in the resulting video.
The 14 projects “share” events;  i.e. the events used in the 14 projects (chapters) are not mutually exclusive.
The source media as well as the events span over 3 physical external hard drives.
All 14 projects are on one hard drive.
    Consideration #1:
It would seem that one way around this problem is to merge all 48 events.  I will not do this since this function moves the events rather than copies them.  Additionally, I’m not even sure if I have enough space to consolidate all 48 events anywhere available to me.
    Consideration #2:
This leaves only one other option which is to rename the source media files and relink all of them across all events.
    Questions:
              1.          Why can’t FCP (internally) qualify the media file names that it imports with the event name?  i.e why is it left up to the user to insure that all of the media file names are unique across all events used by a project?
              2.          If it doesn’t do #1, then why were we not warned of this before starting.  I find out about this when I’m done with my project and trying to archive.  Now it’s a huge task to rename and relink.
    Thoughts:
Regardless of whether there is work-around to this problem, the fact that FCP has a “feature” such as events and allows projects to use more than one event but does not manage them properly reveals a weakness and flaw.  If such is the case, then it would be less painful, in this situation, to force a project to use only one event.
I wish that others would speak to this problem.  Or let us know what the answer to this is.
    Thanks.

    Thank You for the reply.
In my custom page, i am trying to include a search page which includes date parameters based on which the pdf files in the unix box should be displayed in the page as a list. (The pdf file names start with the date).
Once the user clicks the file names displayed in the page, i need to open the pdf. This part i can handle but to search the file names based on the parameter names and display in the page as the list is a bit confusing.
