New feature on my macbook : the fan stays on !

Hi !
I hope this issue hasn't been posted somewhere else, but I did check.
Since about a week, the fan of my macbook pro intel core 2 duo stays on at maximum speed. Before, this happened only while video encoding or a few graphic games like second life. Now, whenever the fan turns on, it stays on, even if the only app i have open is iChat, and even one hour after I even touched the computer !
Of course, the air vents are not blocked and I am not using the laptop on a radiator nor in the desert.
Does anyone have any idea how to get this fan to go back to normal, hopefully without having to replace a component inside... ?!
Thanks
Michael, from France

First, run Activity Monitor and see if perhaps there's some background process running that's working the system hard. I doubt it since if there were you'd almost certainly have seen the performance impact, but it's worth checking. Then I'd suggest resetting the system management controller and see if that helps:

Good luck.

    10G NEW FEATURE-HOW TO FLUSH THE BUFFER CACHE
    ===============================================
    PURPOSE
    이 자료는 Oracle 10g new feature 로 manual 하게
    buffer cache 를 flush 할 수 있는 기능에 대하여 알아보도록 한다.
    Explanation
    Oracle 10g 에서 new feature 로 소개된 내용으로 SGA 내 buffer cache 의
    모든 data 를 command 수행으로 clear 할 수 있다.
    이 작업을 위해서는 "alter system" privileges 가 있어야 한다.
    Buffer cache flush 를 위한 command 는 다음과 같다.
    주의) 이 작업은 database performance 에 영향을 줄 수 있으므로 주의하여 사용하여야 한다.
    SQL > alter system flush buffer_cache;
    Example
    x$bh 를 query 하여 buffer cache 내 존재하는 정보를 확인한다.
    x$bh view 는 buffer cache headers 정보를 확인할 수 있는 view 이다.
    우선 test 로 table 을 생성하고 insert 를 수행하고
    x$bh 에서 barfil column(Relative file number of block) 과 file# 를 조회한다.
    1) Test table 생성
    SQL> Create table Test_buffer (a number)
    2 tablespace USERS;
    Table created.
    2) Test table 에 insert
    SQL> begin
    2 for i in 1..1000
    3 loop
    4 insert into test_buffer values (i);
    5 end loop;
    6 commit;
    7 end;
    8 /
    PL/SQL procedure successfully completed.
    3) Object_id 확인
    SQL> select OBJECT_id from dba_objects
    2 where object_name='TEST_BUFFER';
    OBJECT_ID
    42817
    4) x$bh 에서 buffer cache 내에 올라와 있는 DBARFIL(file number of block) 를 조회한다.
    SQL> select ts#,file#,dbarfil,dbablk,class,state,mode_held,obj
    2 from x$bh where obj= 42817;
    TS# FILE# DBARFIL DBABLK CLASS STATE MODE_HELD J
    9 23 23 1297 8 1 0 7
    9 23 23 1298 9 1 0 7
    9 23 23 1299 4 1 0 7
    9 23 23 1300 1 1 0 7
    9 23 23 1301 1 1 0 7
    9 23 23 1302 1 1 0 7
    9 23 23 1303 1 1 0 7
    9 23 23 1304 1 1 0 7
    8 rows selected.
    5) 다음과 같이 buffer cache 를 flush 하고 위 query 를 재수행한다.
    SQL > alter system flush buffer_cache ;
    SQL> select ts#,file#,dbarfil,dbablk,class,state,mode_held,obj
    2 from x$bh where obj= 42817;
    6) x$bh 에서 state column 이 0 인지 확인한다.
    0 은 free buffer 를 의미한다. flush 이후에 state 가 0 인지 확인함으로써
    flushing 이 command 를 통해 manual 하게 수행되었음을 확인할 수 있다.

  • HT1776 Hi, my iMac screen goes to sleep but the fan stays on 24hrs and never stops?

    Hi, my iMac screen goes to sleep but the fan stays on 24hrs and never stops? You can hear it running all night.
    Appreciate any advice.I'm using Lion. Many problems started since using Lion!

    The temps are a bit higher than I'd expect under normal circumstances, and too high while playing games, but what is the room temp where it is?
    I def. think its a temp thing now. but why does it only raise when im playing games or watching videos online?
    Games tipically press the CPU, Video Card, RAM, and everything else much harder than most apps.
    It may be a Fan not working properly, or just dust buildup.
    Boot off your Install Disk while holding down the *d key*, (not c key), then run the extended Apple Hardware Test. Some disks require you to use the Option key at bootup to select AHT. Some models have a separate AHT CD.
    Report any errors it finds.

  • MacBook Pro fans stay on, very loud

    Today the fans on my MacBook Pro started being on all the time. Sounds loud. This has never happened before. I've had it about two years. The fans start up the moment I turn the power on. I have tried: Shutting down, leaving it off for a few minutes, then starting up again several times. Activity monitor shows System is using about 1% and user is using about 12% of CPU capacity. I repaired permissions, verified hard drive and checked for viruses using Sophos. What is cauising the fans to stay on and loud all the time and be so loud?

    There are a lot of things that may cause the fans to work at maximum speed, from an OS X process to a hardware issue.
    If you have checked there are not any processes that are taking a lot of your CPU, reset the SMC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964 This is the part that manages the fan speed.
    If it does not work, run Apple Hardware Test. Plug the MacBook to the charger, hold Option (Alt) and D keys and run Apple Hardware Test. Make sure you tick the option to run an extended test. If you see an error at the end of the test, copy it here

  • What are your favorite apps/new features you like after the 2.0 upgrade?

    I discovered one feature by mistake, after finally getting my iPhone going again! I pressed the top button and home button at the same time once and saw a white flash on the screen! It turns out it works like a print screen button!! Very cool! Whatever you see on your iPhone, you can save directly to your photos, just press those two buttons simultaneously once until it flashes! If you guys already knew about this, I apologize. Please post any other favorite new features or apps here!! Thanks.

    Well the update worked fine for me and one thing I love is that I can access the app store using the Edge network & not just via wi-fi. but if i can access the app store over the edge network then why not allow users to access the itunes store over the edge network as well? either way i'm happy. also, i liked the fact that when i tested the "locate me" feature in maps that the iphone prompted me for permission. that's a great security feature so that other ppl can't try to access your phone remotely or something and try to determine your location w/o your permission.

  • What new features should be in the second gen. iPod Touch?

    title basically asks the question.
    These can be hardware or software new features.

    iCal needs some desperate improvements to be a good PDA. Like floating events and a better alarm that goes off more than just once.

  • I don't see the new features of CC within the Camera RAW dialog

    Using Adobe Creative Cloud, I Updated Bridge Cc and Photoshop CC. Now when I access Camera Raw, Camera appears as 8.0  without the new features in the Cc version.

    Updating Bridge and Photoshop isn't also updating ACR. You should be seeing the ACR 8.4 update in your CC app. If not, you can download the actual installer for Photoshop CC (not CS6 mind you):
    ACR 8.4 for Mac
    ACR 8.4 for Windows

    Hummmm, you might not be missing anything... From what I understand, really the only new visible add-on apps type programs are Newstand and Reminders. The Notification Center seems to be about how your info and alerts are pushed to your screen and you control that thru the phone settings>General>Notifications, the panel is accessed by swiping downward from the top of your screen. Weird I know, should be more obvious. Enjoy!
    Don't forget, you can now use the volume button on the side of your phone to take photos. I really like this!

  • Everytime i turn my MacBook pro on the screen is black and the fan stays on. is there anything i can do to fix it?

  • MacBook Pro fans stay on strong and loud

    I have had my MacBook pro for a year or two and never had this happen. Fans are staying on strong and loud for no aparen reason (just sitting on a wood table in a 68º F room as usual). A full shut down and restart did not fix the issue. A permissions repair and disk repair did not fix the issue. Any ideas?

    Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    If this isn't the issue, then perhaps there has been a hardware failure or sensor failure. You can see if this helps: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC). If it does not then take it in for service.

  • Anticipated new features/wish list for the Apple TV?

    I'd be interested to hear people's guesses/wishes for the next OS update to the AppleTV. I know that I love mine but I find myself increasingly frustrated by the lost potential. For example, here are a few things I'd love to see (and yes, I've submitted these requests to Apple already):
    * subscribable podcasts - it'd be great to be able to have the Apple TV subscribe to and auto-update podcasts. Great content always available on the device! Can't see any reason why they haven't done this...
    * RSS newsreader/custom info page - I want to be able to turn on my Apple TV and have it give me a single-page summary of the news and info that's important to me. This would be a great way to tart my day - see the weather forecast, see the day's headlines, etc. Again, no practical reason not to do this.
    * some sort of music visualizer - having a largescreen TV simply begs for some great visuals when playing music. I know that the Apple TV's graphic hw is insufficient for this purpose, but it'd still be nice <g>.
    * ABC/NBC/CBS/Hulu/Netflix content - The elephant in the room. The proliferation of high-quality, free streaming content on the web has really changed the game and Apple should be at the forefront of delivering this stuff. I know they'll NEVER do this for business reasons, but I'm hopeful they'll find cutting-edge solutions to this, the most important of all, developments.
    What would YOU like to see?

    Polls and speculation aren't actually permitted. You might want to submit your feedback to Apple:
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/appletv.html
    Best of luck.
