New features for Numbers: Add yours

Let's create one thread that lists the requests / needs / demands of Numbers users, to help Apple figure out this app, because apparently they need the help. They came up with a somewhat new paradigm, so major props there--but some of the omissions or curious programming/organization are startling. I promise to keep in mind that this is a $26 app, so it is not going to out-Excel Excel, no matter what. Also some things Microsoft has patent protection on, so Apple can't copy even if it wanted to. But Apple has to realize that it's average user profile is pretty intellectual in my experience, and they have basic computer needs that Apple should satisfy--it ain't just Grandma wanting to do email, figure out her gas mileage, and send a nice photo newsletter to her friends.
The fact that Mac users send a billion dollars to Microsoft on a regular basis out to tell Steve that they have a need for something with some capability, just minus the crap and bloat.
So far, I would like:
• Faster performance--it's pretty sluggish (Did I mention that it's really s-l--o-w, one page imported Excel sheet--three minutes to process for printing!
• Print Selection capability
• Bigger type on the menu bar--it's ridiculously small
• Attention Apple User Interface Group--dark gray on a light gray background is NOT conducive to legibility
• Rows and Columns narrower than 0.11" to help in formatting
• "Fit to Page" button, as slider is not very accurate in this version--one page Excel sheet prints in Excel at 62% and fits on one page--in Numbers it fits at 54%, with same page margins
• More date format options
• Standard deviations on graphs--easy to do since Cricket Graph in the late 80's, but apparently beyond Apple software writers.
• Inspector to auto move when a window is dragged to resize--why not attach it to the right or left side of the window frame
• Text Tool on Inspector--why can't you select font and size there, and NO separate Fonts window--Text and Fonts belong together!
• Text Tool--Put the Text Box button on the Text Tool--duh
• Text Tool--add Regular/Bold/Italic
• Text Tool--superscript/subscript
• Split windows--come on, this is basic
In the "Dream On" category:
• Filemaker Pro "Lite"-we'll even take Appleworks lite--database
• Mix portrait and landscape in one document

OK Here goes my wannahaves...
1) create new table or sheet from a file instead of having to open the file and copy/paste into current document. ie "Insert Sheet from file", "Insert Table from File"
2) show linked data from a data source other than the address book - eg an ODBC data source or Filemaker database
3) Ability to paste a filtered table into a new table with just the found rows.
4) Ability to freeze rows and columns to allow for very wide or deep tables
5) When typing data into a cell, automatically adjust its width as you type. Depending on your enter key config, hitting enter puts a new line in the cell and adjusts the row height to fit.
6) Printer page formats default to regional standard: eg in Australia, UK - A4
7) Popup list or menu contents based on a data range: eg a list of categories
8) Media to be selected from anywhere on the system, not just in iTunes/iPhoto (eg most of my video is on an external hard drive)
9) "Autofilter" based on contents of the column.
10) Vlookup and other reference functions: need to be able to select a table (by name) as your range, a column/row (by name) to look up from and a column/row (by name) to retrieve. All functions should work this way, not just the basic ones.
11) When inserting a table you should be asked how many rows and columns.
12 "Format painter" - copy styles and other formatting from cell to cell and table to table.
13) Outlining based upon repeated cell values

  • Where are the all-new features for China?

    Hello.
I just upgraded from 10.7 to 10.8 and while going through the feature list I wanted to look more closely at the all-new features for China. However, it looks like most them are not there.
OS X Mountain Lion brings all-new support for many popular Chinese features and services. The dictionary app now includes the Standard Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese. Improved text input makes typing in Chinese easier, faster, and more accurate. With eight new fonts, your writing can appear formal, informal, or fun. Mail works with QQ, 163, and 126. Baidu, the leading Chinese search provider, is a built-in option in Safari. Now you can post to the web right from the app you’re in. Post videos with Youku and Tudou. Post to Sina Weibo, the popular microblogging service. And share easier than ever. All these new services are easy to set up on your Mac.
I've not been able to find anything about the new services that OS X integrates with. For example, in Safari I can only choose between Google, Yahoo and Bing. In QuickTime Player I can only upload to YouTube and Vimeo, and the only microblogging service I can add is Twitter.

Is it impossible to use the those features without making the computer chinese?
I forgot, yes, you can you can always add an account for a specific service in the Messages, Calendars & Contacts Preferences pane.

  • Possible new feature for Macs

    Hi Guys,
I have always been annoyed by not finding the right brightness on my display. It or either to bright or too dark.. BUT I came to the conclusion it is the whites on the display that makes it too bright and my eyes get tired.
I think an excelent new feature for Macs would be to be able to just increase the brightness of DARK colors and have the bright colors increase at 50% rate or something like that.
    What do you think?
    Edwin

This is a user to user forum.  Ideas like these might find there way into software developers hands.  If you wish to have Apple consider the idea, read the unsolicited ideas policy on http://www.apple.com/feedback/ and post there. Brightness of displays from my point of view, and for that matter glare can be very subjective, and hard to please everyone.  Your overhead and peripheral lights, as well as the light behind you make a significant effect on the perceived brightness of the display. Anti-glare displays are truer to real life brightness and color than glossy displays.  People who may not notice as much difference probably wear glasses or contacts as they add highlighted glare to your vision that isnt' there with unaided sight.  People used to viewing glossy photos may prefer glossy displays well.  But when it comes to realism, the anti-glare displays are closer to reality.

  • Why the apple told about this system for the new iphone 6 but the mine no see the change...?1:28 p.m. Wi-Fi calling is a new feature for making high-quality calls when cell conditions are poor.

Hi apple. in the Keynotes about the new iphone you say..
    1:28 p.m.
Wi-Fi calling is a new feature for making high-quality calls when cell conditions are poor.
The question is Work That? i no see the change for me POOR signal here on my office..
my carrier att. have very Poor Signal here on Aguadilla PR.. i take this PHone for this keynotes about the wifi calling is a new feature...
please i need a new respont.. and check the security about iphone Someone call reply the text messenger from the Block area.

It sounds as if you only had one line with an upgrade available. So you can only upgrade one line. For you to upgrade as well, you will have to wait until your upgrade is available. You can check that at MyVerizon. That's just how it works. All carriers and phone brands are the same. I have to wait until February to upgrade. The only thing you can do to get the new iPhone, is add a new line. But then you're paying for a line you don't need.

  • New feature for Preview - Where to submit?

I have a thought for a new feature for Preview that I wonder how many people would say it is worth submitting to Apple, and if so, then where and how do I send it to them?
The problem I face is that I get a lot of PDF forms off websites (usually financially related) that are not created with proper form fields, so I am forced to print the form off and use my "chicken scribble" handwriting to fill it in, then I usually try to email it back, but sometimes I have to fax or mail it.
Well, the thought I had was, "Why can't I use Preview to select a font, click on the page with the Text tool and start typing in what I need?"
Ideally it would be good to be able to save the document with your "overtyping", but I understand that some PDF files are protected, so how about saving just the stuff I have added as to a PDF file that when I open that, it opens the original (blank) form as well?
Surely I'm not the only one that has to fill in PDF forms. Anyone else think this is a worthy addition to Previews already good capabilities?
If so, how do I pass this idea onto someone that cares?
    Cheers,
    Mark

    Welcome to the Forums!
It is a good suggestion. FYI, Acrobat Professional can do this (not the free reader, of course).
Thanks also for understanding that this is not the place for suggestions to Apple!
There's no specific feedback page for Preview, so you should submit to the general OS X feedback page.
Links to other feedback pages (for your future ideas) are here.
    Hope this helps...

  • 1Z0-045: Oracle Database 10g: New Features for Oracle 8i OCPs

    Hi,
I was looking for right reference book for the 1z0-045 upgrade certification. I could not find any reference book that is related to this certification. Only one book have found out on Amazon site, which is "OCP Oracle Database 10g: New Features for Administrators Exam Guide (Oracle Press) (Paperback)" published by McGraw Hill.
But this book does not show exem number 1z0-045 anywhere. So I am not sure, is it a right book to buy.
Please let me know if any one has any knowledge about that.
    I appreciate for your information.
    Thanks
    Amit

The book you mention is for those individuals who are upgrading their 9i OCP to the 10g OCP. Since you are apparently upgrading from 8i OCP, there is possibly a gap in your learning. You might want to take a look at OCP Oracle9i Database: New Features for Administrators Exam Guide (Paperback) which explains the new features for Oracle 9i to someone coming from an 8i background. No additional exam would be needed in your case but this book may help to fill out your knowledge a bit. You could also take a look at http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96531/toc.htm if you would rather not buy an additional book.

    Thanks in advance

Muhammad AliOkay I've haven't done 1z0-045 ... but I at one point I was considering 1z0-050 so I'm willing to share my views on an upgrade exam and exams in general.
Remember Oracle are trying to ensure that a DBA who was tested at 8i DBA OCP has nw
It depends on your definition of read the topics. If you mean literally just read the topics then that will result in a failure. If you mean study research practice and fully understand the topics that should lead to a pass.
Bear in mind that Oracle would expect a competent 8i DBA attending the 5 day training course Oracle Database 10g: New Features for Oracle8i DBAs [http://education.oracle.com/web_prod-plq-dad/plsql/show_desc.redirect?dc=D17389GC10&p_org_id=&lang=&source_call=] to be able pass the exam with perhaps 2 to 4 weeks further study, revision and practice.
Interestingly this particular exam has a relatively high pass mark (73%) ... one implication of that is that it is prudent to be comfortable with all topics.
Generally an upgrade exam will cover topics beyond that of the straight OCA/OCP exams. The questions will obviously be at OCP level.
It is possilble the Sybex book Oracle 10g New Features for Administrators Study Guide (Certification Study Guide) ISBN-13: 978-0782143553 which although for 1z0-040 may have some relevance for some of your topics. If you choose to purchase it that is your choice. (It seems to have good amazon reviews ... though all of these books can contain errors, it may or may not be updated for 10gR2, and some Sybex Oracle books are sometimes OTT in some areas IMHO, but that wouldn't stop me using one).

  • What are the new features for the latest version ...

what are the new features for the latest version of N6300? can you cite me the newest features?

The latest update was just bug fixes and improved stability, no new features. That is nearly always the case with series 40 phones like the 6300.
Nokia do not make the changelogs available publicly but often they do appear on unofficial sites. Searching google may provide you with more detailed info that cannot be posted here.
