New filesystem upgrade replaces fstab
The latest upgrade to filesystem 2012.11-1 installs /etc/fstab.pacnew with no entries. I'm a little bit confused as to why. What am I supposed to do before overwriting my /etc/fstab with it?

A .pacnew file may be created during a package upgrade (pacman -Syu, pacman -Su or pacman -U) to avoid overwriting a file which already exists and was previously modified by the user.
i read that. i just wasn't sure what needed to be done in this particular case. i understand why it's done. so you can compare and merge changes before replacing the file. but, it would be nice if they gave more info then .pacnew was created like what needs to be modified.
There isn't that much more information to give. /etc/fstab is blank because, when you first install Arch, you either add your own entries or use genfstab to do it for you. So, when the filesystem package is updated, the new fstab is as it would be if your first installed Arch. Any changes/modifications--as always in Arch--are the responsibility of the user.

Can the flash storage hard drives in the brand new Macbook Pro Retina Display laptops that were just released a few days ago (10.22.13) be upgraded/replaced in the future? I will need more than the basic 256GB for sample libraries using music software, among other things, but currently larger flash drives from Apple are too expensive. I ask because I'm in the process of buying one of the new 15inch Macbook Pro Retina Display laptops right now (or at least right after I get an answer to this question).
I saw in the Mac store when I started looking at the build options for ordering the Macbook Pro that under Memory it said the memory was built into the computer and therefore could not ever be replaced or upgraded in the future. So I was wondering if something similiar might be the case with the flash storage drives even though the same wasn't written under the hard drive options? If these flash drives can be replaced in the future then I would just purchase the starting 256GB drive and suffer through using connected external hard drives, as unwieldy as that would be, until there were potential replacement flash drives with larger storage capacties available on the market or through Apple for more reasonable prices. But if the hard drives in these laptops can't be replaced/upgraded I would go for the 500GB drive option (even though paying an additional $300, before taxes, for just 244GBs more storage space is absolutely outrageous no matter how great flash drives are with their read/write speeds, no moving parts to break, and lighter weight/thinner builds allowing for an overall thinner laptop). I would even go for the larger 1TB option, which is really what I need, except that costs an additional $700 which is more than enough to buy me a new 50inch, HD, flatscreen TV from a reputable brand if I were so inclined! (And yes, I understand the youth of the technology, current limits to flash drive capacities, and the reason for the high prices. I know I'm not getting bilked...)
So yeah, does anybody have an answer to this question? Can the flash hard drives in the new Macbook Pro Retina Display laptops, just released, be upgraded/replaced in the future? Any answers are greatly appreciated and will save me some much needed cash on my purchase of one of these laptops! And I should also ask, if so, can they be replaced by the laptop owner with the normal toolset through the normal, easily done methods of hard drive replacement in laptops that has been common, or would I have to bring the laptop to a Apple technician?

macsales.com has been working on providing aftermarket modules for the older models that were on the SATA Bus.
These newer ones are likley directly on the PCIe Bus. That will take some time to develop. -
[Solved] latest filesystem upgrade failed
During last system upgrade ( pacman -Syu )，when upgrading filesystem-2011.08-1,
the system hang for a while, then pacman exit with some segfault error
I tried to fix it by typing ` pacman -Syu ` again, then got another error when upgrading linux-3.0.2-1
ERROR: file not found: `/etc/modprobe.d/usb-load-ehci-first.conf'
and filesystem is not in the upgrade package list, so I tried
sudo pacman -S filesystem
but I got some file confilct error

to my computer, and reinstall filesystem and kernel

system automaticlly checked and fixed those errors on root partition and reboot again
Then I can boot into X now

If I try to upgrade kernel of the VM to 3.0.2-1 ( currently 3.0.1-1 ), will cause VirtualBox and my computer crash
generating some assert error, produce segfault when I tried to type any command in shell
unable to launch any program in X, but if I switch to tty*, I only got
INIT:Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes
So I have to push the reset button to force reboot
after restore VM to previous snapshot, not having any problem so far -
User's PATH after filesystem upgrade of 2013-06-03.
Changing the directories /bin etc. to symbolic links to /usr/bin is transparent for most programs. However, certain programs such as shotwell (see bug FS#35899 filed on this package) are sensitive to how they are invoked, as influenced by the PATH variable. If /bin comes first in the PATH, then after the filesystem upgrade, shotwell is invoked as "/bin/shotwell" instead of "/usr/bin/shotwell". As a result, shotwell looks in "/bin/../*" for stuff it needs, rather than in "/usr/bin/../*". As a result, the unqualified invocation "shotwell" fails. This appears to be due to shotwell's dependency on vala, so other vala-based programs may be affected.
A solution is to remove /bin, /sbin, and /usr/sbin from one's legacy PATH in .profile/.bashrc, etc.
Perhaps users should be warned about this in the upgrade instructions on the homepage.

Now I know that doesn't mean it hasn't happened to other people, but unless it's a common problem I don't think we need to post a news bulletin or push post-upgrade messages into potentially breaking packages.
To be honest I'd consider this a bug in shotwell that should be fixed upstream, seems very odd that you can make the app but not run it until it's make install'd and executed from the installed location.
Thinking on more arch terms (as I understand them); This bug only occurs if you modified /etc/profile. Archlinux cannot start notifying users of breakages that may occur from all kinds of various configurations. I'm not saying that we should never notify users of potential breakages, but there should be limits and in my opinion this falls outside those limits. -
Why is it that when I add a new bookmark, it replaces one of my old ones?
I have a good number of bookmarks in Firefox. I want to add more, but each time I add a new one, it replaces the last bookmark I added with the new one. That old bookmark is then gone from my list.
Also, normally when I hit "bookmark this page," the box that pops up will automatically be populated with the page title I am trying to bookmark...however, now when I try to add a new bookmark, the box is populated with information from the last bookmark I added.
I have version 3.0.7 for Mac. I really don't want to lose my old bookmarks, and I have a lot of windows I keep open now because there are pages I want to bookmark, but can't.
Any advice is appreciated.This can be caused by a problem with the file places.sqlite that stores the bookmarks and the history.

I had a new hard drive replaced in my imac. Now my 1st generation apple TV does not appear under devices in itunes. How do I get my apple tv to connect to my computer? My OS is 10.6.8
Welcome to the Apple Community.
Navigate to Settings > Computers > Your Library on the Apple TV, you may be told you will lose all synced content, but you can't doing anything abouty this, you won't lose any purchased content that has yet to be transferred. Then select Settings > Computers > Connect To iTunes, note the passcode that appears on screen, click on the device in iTunes and enter the passcode when prompted. -
Dear wise & wondeful people:
How can I get missing contacts, notes, calendar dates and reminders that are just on my old iphone onto the iCloud for transfer to my new iPhone upgrade? Half of my contacts, notes, ect. were on my iCloud so have happily moved to my new iPhone but the rest are completely resistant. For example, on my iCloud I have 14 missing contacts starting with the letter A alone, however they are happily viewable on my old iPhone 4S and won't budge over into the iCloud.
There are also 3 notes missing yet still acessible on my onld iPhone 4S, the list goes on.
Your help would be most appreciated. Thank you so much.

I have over 16,000 songs in my iTunes library so I manually manage the music on all my devices. I bought a new iPod to replace an older one. I'd like to transfer all 900 songs to my new device without having to handpick each song from my music library. Is there a way to do it?
No. I have quite a few more 16,000, so I don't manually manage. Making playlists for each device makes things much easier to organize. You can create regular lists of essential tracks and smart playlists to automatically catch new content, top rated, most played etc. If you'd done it this way all along configuring a new or restored device would be the work of moments.

iPad settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party party app along with app settings are included with the iPad's backup along with other data.
If you are syncing your iPad direct with iTunes on your computer via USB, the iPad's backup is updated as the first step during the iTunes sync process.
The first time you connect a new iPad or iOS device to iTunes that is used to sync with another iOS device, you are prompted to transfer the backup for the other iOS device to the new device. This is followed by a sync to transfer the same content from your computer that is on the old iPad to the new iPad such as music, movies, tv shows, 3rd party apps, photos, audio and print books, etc. -

I really appreciate the detail that wjosten provides on the User Tip entitled "Syncing to a New Computer or Replacing a crashed hard drive". I do have a follow up question though about my wife's iPhone 4 running iOS 5.1.1. All her calendar and contacts are on the Cloud - not running through anything like Outlook or Windows Address Book, as far as I can tell. In the past, we previously synched with a PC.
Since the calendar and contacts are on the Cloud, can we synch using the steps wjosten details on a new PC and not lose the calendar / contacts? If not, do you have any advise? Thanks.If she doesn't want to sync her calendar and contacts with a supported program on her computer such as Outlook, just uncheck Sync Calendar and Sync Contacts on the Info tab of her iTunes sync setting before syncing (which I assume is what she was doing before). She can continue to sync these with iCloud if that what she prefers by going to Settings>iCloud and turning Contacts and Calendars to On).

As I downloaded new software upgrade in my iPod nano 7 th gen and also new iTunes upgrade then all data on my iPod got erased and now when I am trying to sync it again then sync button is disabled on the windows screen . Kindly help

They don't have the music on their computer so they cannot transfer the iTunes folder, from the computer to their iPod and then to the new computer. And if they try to enable disk use on the iPod it will erase all the music that is on it. The method you cited is moving the files in a data format using the iPod as a flash drive. It doesn't work if they are in music format. That is why I suggested Yamipod. -
I have Photoshop Elements 9 on an iMac with OS 10.6.8. I bought a new printer/scanner and the program will not import the new scanner to replace the old one. How do I do this?
Thank you for your suggestions. I downloaded a more recent version of Twain, but this didn't help. I also tried closing and opening Photo Shop and restarting my computer without success. Reinstalling Photo Shop sounds like a very promising solution, but I'm not sure I will do it. In the meantime I can scan items using a printer program. These scans open in Photo Shop. It is an extra step.

I have a new time capsule (replace my old time capsule). I want to erase my old one. My computer does not see the old one anymore, how do I connect it (the old TC is not connected to modem). I want to erase it and then use it as either a second hard drive (sired/sirelesly?) or as a hard drive/bridge. So,
1. why doesn't my cmputer see the old TC
2 once i have solved that, how do I erase the old one
3. Can I use the old one as a supplemental hard drive
a. wired?
b. wirelessly?
4. Can I use the old one as a range extender?
I know .. a lot of questions but I would appreciate any help.

1. Because it is either the same IP as the new one or hidden by being plugged in as a second router.
To access it, isolate one computer from the existing network and plug it directly by ethernet to a lan port of the TC. Use the erase function in the TC to remove all the content of the hard disk.
Then go to the internet tab, connection sharing and select off bridged. You can then reconnect the TC to the network.. and the computer as well. The TC will act as bridged device.. getting IP from the main router and should then appear correctly in Airport utility.
2. I covered in 1. But you just go in airport utility manual setup. disk, and you will see the erase function. You can also set it to bridge and leave the erase until you put it back in the network.. but be careful you erase the right one.
3. You can use the old TC via wired or wireless.. although I would always stick to wired connection if possible. Speed on wireless is 10x worse than wired.
Also note the reliability goes down dramatically after 2 years.. a series 1 3 years old or more is ebay fodder unless you want to repair it. Do not trust vital data to it.. when it dies you will have issues recovering it.
4. Yes, all apple routers will function as wireless extenders. when you do that the ethernet ports turn off so it becomes a purely wireless device.. strange apple decision on what you want to use your TC for. -

When in CS6 - Bridge>OUTPUT as a PDF....if you choose "Watermark" as an image...and the image is a PNG so that stuff shows through.....Bridge seems to put one multible copies of the PNG file on top multible times....causing strange overlapping. LET M
