New Final Cut 5 User Question

Im a new user and I have a question. Using Final Cut Pro 5.something on a MacBook Pro
I am importing a video with an odd resolution into sequence. Even if I change the sequence settings to match the video, the program still says I need to render the video to see it. Rendering takes WAYYY too long.... is there a way to have a sequence import settings from a video? I pulled up the video analysis and tried to match the settings of the sequence, but its not working.

Capture problems for new Final Cut user

I'm new to final cut, just switching from pc...got a brand new mac pro, fresh install of final cut studio. I am capturing hdv tapes from a Sony FX1 using capture now so that the clips are broken up. It captures perfectly except for the long clip, which is about 40 minutes long. I've gone back to capture it alone and get an unknown capture error after I hit escape to end the capture. There is plenty of room on the hard drive and the ckeckbox in system settings for limiting capture now to 30 minutes is not checked. Any ideas?

Are you capturing using HDV, ProRes, or SD via i.Link Conversion? I also have a Sony FX1, and capturing long clips is only an issue when my hard drives can't keep up or if there is an issue with the tape. Sometimes the tape can have issues and will disrupt your capture. Definitely set your capture scratch to an internal drive if you can and don't capture to your boot drive if possible. If you only have one drive, fork over the 100 bucks and get a 750 gig drive or even two or three and raid them together. You'll be happier if you do.

Generally any Mac made since 2009 can handle FCP X.
Your small screen is not ideal unless you are young and have good vision.
However, you needn't ask whether or not your computer is suitable as you can find out yourself by downloading the free 30 day trial.

Some of the functions of Color have been incorporated into FCP X, meaning you will have more than the 3-Way-Color-Corrector but less than Color.
Since you cannot share projects between FCP and FCP X, you might want to stay with FCS if you rely on Color.

If the answer is yes how do I separate them? Can they both be in my applications folder? I just want to try the new program.

Final Cut Studio gets moved to its own subfolder inside Applications.

How many registration keys come with the new Final Cut Studio

Hi I'm thinking of buying the new final cut studio and am trying to find out how many registration keys come with the box. I have 2 others in the family that would use it on their comps as well, and my friend had gotten the previous version of final cut studio 2 (final cut pro 6) and said it came with 3 keys inside, which would be great for me. So I'm just making sure that's true. Thanks.
Also you can bring final cut pro 6 files from another computer onto a computer with final cut pro 7 and still work on them right?

Your friend is a pathological lier (or delusional - sometimes it's hard to tell the difference).
FCP is licensed for one laptop and one desktop as long as:
1. Both machines are owned by YOU (your inlaws don't count as you)
and
2. They are not used at the same time.
If your family wants FCS, time for them to purchase their own copies. (Apple has dropped the price so low that even Junior High School students can afford their own copies now.)
Yes, FCP6 files will open without issue on FCP7. The reverse is not true.

After spend 300 dollars in the brand new final cut X, i notice that i also have a free spinning colourfull beachball?! yes in the previous version i never add so many hang ups and so time waiting for some operations, i have, as u can say the best comfiguration tha a imac can have until a year ago, 16 g of ram and a i7 processor, well the best on a imac.

I'm running it on a 15" MacBook Pro and I get constant beach balls, they seem to get more frequent the longer I have the app open, and ultimately I have to force close and restart my computer because the whole system bogs down. Your media is stored in Final Cut Events folder > "name of event" > original media. The Final Cut Events folder is in your movies folder or at the root level of an external drive if you are using one to store your media. Simply open iMovie and under file menu select import movies. Navigate to the original media folder and import your clips to Imovie event library.

What is the frame rate of the project? At what frame rate was the media recorded? What frame size?
What are the audio settings?
What are the specs of the machine, in particular how much RAM, how is the hard drive connected, etc.?
If possible, post screenshots of the inspector for the project.
It could be related to the audio frequency?

So I will need upgrade to FCP 7 first, then convert to an XML file in 6.0.6, then convert to another file that FCP X can read? I have a lot of half done projects that need finishing. Is this process very complex and time consuming?
Maybe I should be approaching this from a different angle. The reason I am asking is that I now need to upgrade to a new Mac book pro and have been told that I cant run final cut pro 6.0.6 on the new models using maverick. Is this true?

Unfortunately, this is just not supported in FCX, and Apple has stated they have no plans to add it in. There are some third party developers working on solutions, but no products or timelines have been announced yet.
The best thing to do is to finish your project in FCP and use FCX for new projects.
Eventually, converters may become available to port your old projects to FCX.

I have a power mac G4 and I want to know will the new final cut package work on it? My pc has a radeon 9000 pro, dual 1.25 processors,, memory 1.25.

I'd think you will be able to run FCS 2. Your computer is above all of the minimum specs, only wild card here is your graphics card. It has enough VRAM ... just not listed in the compatible cards. Bet it works OK though. Look at the Motion and Color minimums. FCP will work without a hitch in any event, and so should compressor, LiveType, and DVD SP. You could upgrade it if you find it lacking but I'd give it a go with the card you have to see if you're OK first.

We've just downloaded Maverick and the new final cut 10.1. On two separate computers it has crashed and we have lost our entire project that we were editing. Not sure if it is a final cut problem or maverick. Any suggestions on how to get the timeline

Please help me. I have been editing on a tiny little pc, and finally made the switch. Now, I can't access any of my videos, can't edit or even open the files. If all the files are moi or mod, what does final cut express need to open the files? How do I go about converting them? Such a big powerful machine, such limited accessibility!

FCE4 on an Intel Mac can only edit DV, HDV and AVCHD video.
All other formats will not work.
You will have to download an app like Streamclip to convert your non-standard files to DV.
