New G5 Quad running slow...why?

My computer is very new...and it has been running slowly (the rainbow circle appears quite often) from day 1. It's not specific to any one program, and it happens when I am searching the web too. I bought and installed Disk Warrior, but I don't really understand the program. Why would such a kick-butt, new computer run slow?
Advice appreciated

danabell,
Apple sells a sort of bare bones computer and it takes a bit more money and knowledge to leverage it's full capabilites.
Disk Warrior will not give you much of any performance benefit, in fact at your current learning curve I don't recommend you using it or much of anything else.
What you need is someone who a Mac mechanic, that can trick out your Quad with more RAM, faster hard drives etc., much like a car mechanic. They can also take a look how and what your using that Quad for and best tailor a backup and software utilization method so your getting the most out of that beast and protecting your data from loss.
You have a Quad processor machine, it's potentially very powerful provided the other requirements of the computer are met. Especially more RAM, then faster video cards and hard drives.
Only someone who can observe what your using this for can tailor your machine, that's why Apple sells a bare box at the Apple Stores, because so many people's needs are different that tricking out each machine would set the average price well over $5000.
Now you can take the machine back to a Apple Store and they can install RAM for you, but they charge so much it's insane. You'll do better having someone install it for you and buy it off a website like Crucial.com and save hundreds of dollars.
If you don't know anyone nearby that can help you with your Mac, you can search Apple's main page for "Mac User Group" and by finding a local group they most likely can help you.
Good luck, I wish i had that Quad, I know what I would be doing with it.

You might want to post this in the Using your Power Mac G5 section, which is
the right section for your computer.
In the menatime, how have you used Disk Warrior ? How
long have you been using your computer ? Do you have
a lot of important files on it ?
There are things you might want to try before taking
measures such as running DW. Yasu is a nice and easy-to-use
    maintenance/troubleshooting utility which will clear
cache files and font caches that might have become
corrupted and could slow the computer down, as well
    as clearing logs, etc.
    thanks.

  • Why does the new version FireFox run slower than the old one?

I have a fairly new computer but Firefox runs slower than the older version. Can this be remedied?

That does not sound right. I recommend rebuilding your VI. Beore you do, open the top level VI and press contol-shift-run arrow to perform a manual binary recompile. This makes LabVIEW recompile the whole code. Most times you will not see anything happen but occasionally an error will surface. Be sure to save the VI then rebuild it.
You may also need to reinstall the LabVIEW run time engine and/or LabVIEW. I would start with the run time engine first.

  • NEW macbook pro running slow ~ i hate the rainbow pinwheel

    i have a two-week old MacBook Pro.
it has been running slow ever since I got it.
the apple genius bar guy pulled up my activity monitor and said it was normal.
how can a constant rainbow pinwheel be normal???
because i use it for business, i had to download Outlook and now i can barely get anything to run without the stupid rainbow pinwheel.
it has 4GB or memory.  do I need to add another 4GB or is there something else I can do?
i can't believe how this "powerful machine" feels like i'm trudging in the mud.
    thanks for your help.

Ok, so I'm pretty new to this and want to make sure I answer each of your questions.
Right now, my computer is behaving (of course)... so I might need to do this again when I've got a pinwheel or beach ball or whatever they call that spinning rainbow torture device.  So, the numbers below reflect my computer without the pinwheel (probably not helpful for troubleshooting)....

  • Why is my new macbook pro running slow?

I bought a new macbook pro in october 2012. It has always run very fast without a problem.
Yesterday i noticed when i opened up apps the app symbol would bounce in the dock for a good 20 - 30 seconds and i would get the spinning beachball icon. • Brand new Hp desktop running slow

I just purchased a new HP desktop computer (HP 110-210).  AMD quad-core a4 accelerated processor, 4GB memory, 500GB hard drive.  The computer has disapointed me because it is far more slower than my 4 year old HP laptop.  Files take awhile to load, google chrome fails to open sometimes.  Overall, the computer is just not as fast as I expected it to be, and honestly, I would consider it to be slow.
One concern that I had when I purchased it was that it was the floor model (purchased at a discount of course), meaning customers could use it as a test computer.  Although the one I purchased was turned off and not available for use at that time, I would assume it was used as a display computer at one time.  The manager did "reset the computer to factory settings" before packaging it up.  I am currently running a virus scan on mcafee, 36% complete and so far it has found 1 virus.  Wondering if there is any more steps I should take to speed this computer up before I take it back to the store for a refund?

    Hello @Cmal89,

  • New MacBook Pro Running Slow after repairs?

    Hi Everyone,
I have 3 month old MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz with 4GB RAM running Leopard 10.5.5 which I bought back in June.
It was working beautifully until a month ago when it suddenly had a problem where the trackpad, the keyboard and the left had USB port stopped working, but it would work with an external keypad and mouse through the right hand USB port.
I took it o the recommended Apple service centre and the fixed it in a few days by replacing the trackpad the keyboard, the uSB port and the logic board.
It all works again but has been running really slow ever since, even taking a long time to open up folders and about 4 times as long as it used to to copy files to USB flash drives.
Any ideas on things I can try to fix it up?

    Thanks,
Yes I just checked and there's still 4GB or RAM. Another thing I've noticed to day is that the Hard Drive seem to be making a bit of general low background noise when nothing is going on and the activity monityor says not much is happenning. From memory it used to be quieter in the past.

  • New mac mini running slow

    08/26/2011
I just bought a new max mini with Lion, it is SLOW, SLOW SLOW.  What is wrong?

  • New Macbook Pro running slow?

I just got a brand new Macbook pro little over a month ago and it has been working great. I installed OS X Lion a day after the initial release date and have been thrilled with it so far. It was able to load 1080p HD YouTube videos great, which my old desktop PC would never have been able to do, but within the last week I haven't even been able to load 360p videos without pausing and letting it buffer for a minute or so before watching something. The internet is fine. The signal is strong and the speed hasn't changed on any other internet device in the house. Any ideas on what the problem could be? Any suggestions? Let me know if you need more info.
    Thanks

usuallly sometimes when many people are using the internet in the house then the internet starts to get slower even when it shows full connection. and if you download too many things then the mac starts to get slow. try doing these things when no one else is using the internet connection

  • New Macbook Pro Running Slow. What can I do?

Hey there! I purchased a 15'' Macbook Pro about two months ago. I tried running Starcraft II on it, and it performed great.
Then, while I was playing, it started running -really- well. I had maxed out all the settings, and somehow the framerate was a constant 90-100. Now if I do this I get about 10 frame rate or less, maybe. If I run on even the lowest settings I can't get higher than 65 or so.
I know it's not related to an SMC reset or anything like that. I think there must be some setting on the mac that I'd enabled to cause the game to run so well. It's really a great machine- i7 core processor, 8 gigs of ram, a gig of video memory- and it can barely run this game at all, now. This surprises me because my friend's older macbook, which doesn't even have a graphics card, runs the game better than mine does. I think he's on an i5 or i3 processor, with 256 MBs of video memory on an Nvidia card. I'm on an ATI card.
I've tried reinstalling Lion OSx, I've tried going into Bootcamp, and I've tried all the SMC reset tricks and Disk Repair tricks out there; I've also reinstalled and repaired the game. Another problem is that no drivers seem to work for my graphics card in Windows 7; they all say they're not compatable. Actually, if I run a program called AT Monitor, in OSx, I see that apparently my GPU usage is "0". Does this make sense to anybody?
And then, if I run my video card in Windows 7, for some reason my computer throttles it to 100hz/150hz.
Finally, the charger seems to be running really hot, like really hot. I started noticing the heat in the battery/charger around when the computer started not working well.
I would really appreciate any help! Thanks in advance.

Third-party system modifications are a common cause of instability and poor performance. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions -- they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line of text below into the window, and press return:
    kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Next, do the same thing with this line:
    sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
That's one line, not two. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
    Next, this command:
    launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
Again, one line. Finally, one more:
    ls -1A {,/}Library/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Sta}* 2> /dev/null
Important: If you synchronize with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address will appear in the output of the above command. Change it to something like “[email protected]” before posting.
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Motion runs slow, why?

How do I let Motion know that I have 4.5GB of DDR SDRAM, so it can play something faster than 9fps? I'd like it to always play at 30fps. My graphics card is a ATI Radeon 9650 with 256 MB of VRAM. (not sure how to assign this to motion either.) Please help.
    Power Mac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   2.7 GHz and 4.5 GB

    Welcome to the discussions.
I'd like it to always play at 30fps.
everyone would like to play all Motion's projects at 30 FPS! But it is not like this.
It depends what filters and effects did you use in the project. It is quite easy to compound the project with blurs, drop shadows and other needed filters and effects, and the playback will slow down to 1 or 2 fps!
It is not so difficult to create the project that can seriously slow down (to several fps) even the MacPro 3.0 with 8GB RAM and X1900XT card!
So, don't be surprised - your computer and the graphic card aren't the fastest elements nowadays. Even the short projects from "Fun with ... " series can make a lot of "troubles" for the fastest computers.
I'am curious how Motion 3 will work, but it looks that it should work much better. We will see...
    Marek.

  • New - Macbook Pro - Running slow, beach ball spinning all the time

I've had my Macbook pro about 3 weeks and the beach ball is constantly spinning and I'm constantly having to force quit programs. Between Mail, Safari, and Aperture. Any ideas?
    Robin

    ONE POSSIBLE SOLUTION:
I've recently had the beach ball appearing every 30 seconds or so and then the Mac totally freezes.
After trying all the suggestions online, the solution that fixed my problem was to reset the SMU. It basically forces the fan to maximum power and cools your mac down. The problems I had were being caused by an overheating Mac, even though it looked like a system software issue!
    The reset the SMU:
    Shut your Mac down.
Unplug the power cable from the back of the mac and any other devices (keyboard, etc).
Leave the mac for at least 10 seconds.
Hold down the power button on the back of the mac.
Keep holding down the power button and re-attach the power cable.
Once the power cable is in place, release the power button.
Now press the power button again to start-up your mac. (You can plug your devices back in now).
You should now hear the fan at maximum levels (it's very noisy!).
If you have the same problem that I had, your mac should start to cool and your mac should start operating preperly again (it may take a few minutes).
If this works, you'll then need to download FAN CONTROL FOR MAC.
It's a control panel that better regulates the temperature of your mac than the standard settings.

  • Satellite C50-A628 running slow

    Good day everyone.
Sorry if this post is in the wrong section, but, please help.
I know that maybe some people might think this as a waste of time or just something you could search in google, but, for about *7 months*, I've been trying to figure out why my new laptop is running slow.
As this laptop comes without any pre-installed operating system, there is no restore disk or factory reset disc. For the first few months of using my laptop, it's been running +windows 8.1 pro+.
Every time I use it, it opens everything okay, except when my browser is open. everything becomes unstable and doesn't respond. after a few seconds of not responding, I can use it again as long as I don't multi-task. I've installed the latest graphics drivers and some apps, but that's it. I thought that it was a problem with windows 8 about 5 days ago, so I downgraded to +windows 7 ultimate 64 bit+.
Now, i'm starting to think that maybe the problem is because of the drivers since I didn't install the drivers required for the laptop since it doesn't come with the drivers and reset disk.
So now, I'd like to ask for support on this matter. Please show the proper installation of windows 7 and the all the drivers required for my laptop which is the *TOSHIBA SATELLITE C50-A628 RUNNING WINDOWS 7 ULTIMATE 64-bit*. (Or any idea on why this problem is occuring)
Thank you and have a nice day.
    -George B.

One note: the system performance, especially the internet browser issues has NOTHING to do with drivers preinstalled on your notebook. Mostly drivers are not the reason why the notebook runs slow (open software slowly, etc)
Fact is that your Satellite C50-A628 was equipped with 2GB RAM.
Additionaly an part of this 2GB RAM is shared with GPU: Intel HD Graphics
Therefore less than 2GB are used for system and applications.
To be honest; this is not enough to run system smoothly!
I recommend you to upgrade the RAM at least to 4GB/6GB or better 8GB RAM to get better performance.
    Regadign the drivers download:
The Win 7 driver can be downloaded here:
    http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=EU
    Choose: Satellite C50-A PSCJGF
