New gaming laptop suggestions

My laptop came back for Geek Squad with a message telling BB to replace it.  As they don't carry that model anymore and the stores don't stock the better gaming Laptops they gave me a gift card so I can replace it.
my old machine had 12 GB RAM, NVIDIA 675m GPU, and 7200 rpm HDD.  And it worked exceptional for all games I played.  Most CPU's in the current gaming machines are faster.
Looking for suggestions and bad things on certain brands.
As a base starting point I am looking at the Dominator 895 and 894
The significant differences are 8 gb ram on the 895 and 12 gb on the 894 plus 128 GB SSD for $200 more.  RAM I can install for a less than $200 to bring it up to 12 or 16
Is the SSD that much of a game changer.  I have never had an SSD on a computer (only tablets and phones)
It is my understanding that the OS would be loaded on the SSD.
Would it also then be significanly better perfomace wise to load my main games on the SSD or to leave that alone for the OS

Changing ram in system in most cases does NOT void the warranty. Only time it would void the warranty is if you have to break a warranty seal to access the memory.
SSD's are very much worth it. While HDD win on price and capacity. SSD's are better for their speed (and yes the speed difference is noticable), they emit no noise at all, they dont become fragmented like HDD's that traditionally slows down a HDD speed even further, and they are rugged! SSD's are great in laptops because laptops are designed to be portable and movable. A SSD has no moving parts so they are not susceptible to shock like a mechanical HDD is.
That said it looks like all other specs are identical. I would go with the 894 for 200 dollars more. While you may be able to upgrade the memory cheaper then 200 dollars you will pay just as much if not more if you also bought a SSD seperately as well.
If you get the one with the SSD the OS should be installed on that drive by the OEM. And then I would put your most played games on that SSD as well and then the rest on the HHD.

  • Be careful with these new "gaming laptops"

I was pleasantly surprised to see quite a few new "gaming laptops" being advertised on the website.  Sony, Toshiba, and even Samsung have started off the new year by offering some really interesting new products.  While I am happy to see this new dedication to the gaming genre of computer, I really want to warn potential buyers of the pitfalls associated with these machines.
Lets start with the good-The new computers are boasting some good power, including the newest and most advanced processors (i5 and i7).  Pretty much all of these models use DDR3 ranging from 4-6 gigs...not too shabby.  Some other nice features include very stunning screens, blue tooth, etc.
A good gaming laptop is usually composed of 3 major elements (debatable): 1. A good processor 2. A decent amount of RAM 3. A good graphics card.  Similar to the fire triangle, one weak or absent component makes the structure crash.  And this is the Achilles heal of the new Sony, Toshiba, and Samsung "gaming laptops."
Enter the Nvidia 330m and 360m graphics card.  For those loosely keeping track of Nvidia mobile graphics cards, the 260m is one of the more recent ones to be released, so naturally the 330m and 360m SOUND better than the 260m.  Well...yes and no.  For simplicity sake, lets compare 3 graphics cards: GTS 360m found in the Toshiba, the GT330m found in the Sony, and the GTX 260m found in the Asus.
The GTS 360m is essentially the same chip as the GTS 260m, ranked #25 as a class 1 chip, only just above the GTS 260m.  The GT 300m is surprisingly only a class 2 chip (midrange) and ranked #51.  Finally, the GTX 260m..............................................................class 1 chip, ranked #19.
So which one is the best to get?  There are 3 Toshiba "gaming laptops" currently out and each has a $400 price difference between them.  They all have the same graphics card and the only difference is that the middle one has a better processor and the best one has more ram.  The graphics card is...decent and the processor is more than adequate.  The Sony has a good processor but the graphics card is very week for a top of the line gaming notebook.  Finally, the Asus has a slightly older processor and only 4gb of RAM, but the graphics card is the best.  Unfortunately, Asus computers at Best Buy have not had a very good reliability rating.
For someone like me currently in the market for a gaming notebook, I have seen Toshiba make their move, I've seen Sony make their move, so now I am going to wait and see if Asus makes their move anytime soon (which I do expect to happen).  If Asus does not come out with a new computer within a month, I will probably get the lower end Toshiba, just because it is more reliable than the Asus and not too overly expensive.
Please feel free to write your own opinions on my opinions stated here.

I haven't fully tested out the graphics, but for basic things its keeping up just fine. High settings on basic games like wow and dragon age are running flawlessly. Haven't tried anything more demanding. I would never say a laptop would be a top of the line gaming system because the majority of gamers use desktops for true gaming because of the expandability and upgrade capability. It's still nice to have a computer that can keep up with day to day use and still be able to play something when I feel like it, or stream hulu on a dual monitor set up while I do other things without issues. It sure is a jump up in performance from my older ati card. So is it a gaming laptop, sure. Is it going to do what a true gamer would need it to, nope, but somebody who is investing in a computer only for high performance gaming wouldn't buy a laptop.

  • Can I prevent dust killing my gaming laptop using a room air purifier set up ?

I have  MSI Wind Top AE1900 2009 model at home which my brother uses for gaming. Lately the fan is sounding like a lawnmower and the system has slowed down considerably . I asked a friend to take a look and he tells me its probably because of heating due to dust build up .To be honest I clean it just once a year and sometimes use a vacuum cleaner or a hairdryer to knock off the dust on the surface. I'm thinking of investing in a new gaming laptop since I cannot upgrade this model is there something I could do to improve performance ?? As a temporary solution I'm planning on using our room air purifier ClairBF2025 (go-clair.com) to prevent dust build up .
Is there an easier workable option out there ? Would appreciate any suggestion /advice.

Hmm.. its always been silent and off late it has been making this noise .. So got my friend to dismantle it and he said there has been accumulation of lot of dust .. I'm not very good at hardware and stuff .. Is it time to buy a new one ? I'm confused ..

I want to buy a new gaming laptop and i really love the qosmio series but its VGA is a bit outdated if we consider the new DX 11 cards...
will Toshiba release a new gaming latop anytime soon? I heard about the new 3D laptop but i don't want a 3D laptop at least now!

Not *that* great of a difference, honestly. But it's still there.

  • Warning to people looking for a gaming laptop

    I bought Gateway FX P-7805u(Core Duo 2 P8400, 4GB RAM, 17.1" monitor with 1920x1200 max res, and GeForce M 9800GTS 1GB for $1,150 ) about 10
days ago. It was an amazing deal! I searched the internet for hours and couldn't find a laptop that was a bigger bang for the buck. I was extremely happy
with it...for the first few days.
At some point however it started to crash most games I played, showing the infamous nvlddmkm.sys error. I tried every suggestion I could find on
    google:
-Installed latest drivers from nvidia and gateway
-Ran a memory test with no problem reported
    -Switched between opengl and d3d
    -Disabled Aero theme
-Decreased clock speed up to 10%(did work on one game)
    -Formatted to factory condition
At that point I thought it must have been a faulty mobo/gpu, but I doubt it now. There are many people with the same model and the same problem:

The error happens only when certain 3d apps are running, so if you don't play any games, this shouldn't be a problem. But this is supposed to be a
GAMING laptop! Too bad I have to return this tomorrow. I won't find a budget laptop as good as this(as far as the specs go, of course).

PC gaming is a constantly changing market. With every new game, it requires more RAM, more Hard drive space, more video processing power and a new power supply to run that new videocard. PC Gaming is a very expensive hobby you must be able to get afford the upgrades that the new games require.
That is the number 1 reason why I do not recommend a laptop for gaming. There are just no upgrade options avaiable for most notebook computers.
    1. Let's say you spend $2000 in May 2009 for a laptop so you can play Crysis.
    2. January 2010 Crysis 2 comes out (just an example) and you want to play Crysis 2 on your laptop.
    3. Guess what?? Your videocard in your less than 1 year old notebook computer will not play Crysis 2.
    4. You cannot upgrade the videocard.
    5. So you have to pay out another $2000 or more for another laptop just so you can play Crysis 2.
PC gaming requires constant upgrades and you can't do that on most laptops.
    Exactly.
While my Nvidia 8800GTX is still able to play the majority of the games on the market

  • What's a good gaming laptop?

College student here, in dire need of a new laptop.  I dropped my old one and the screen cracked.  Plus it's rather old and slowly starting to die on me.
So with that said, I need a laptop for school, but I also need it to be able to run WoW and LoL.  I have know nothing about computers, so I don't really know what I'm looking for.  Any suggestions?

Like the other contributor suggested, any laptop with a dedicated card (nVIDIA/AMD VISION sticker on it) Will give you better performance than integrated graphics.
Best bang for your buck would be a laptop with an AMD Trinity Processor, and AMD Vision graphics.
While it won't give you the best performance in the world, it will be able to run WoW & LoL at very good framerates at a decent screen resolution (720p HD). (should run you about 500-750)
If you're looking for something with a little more pizzaz and don't mind spending some more money there is a 14" Asus G41 series gaming laptop with an i5 processor, an nVIDIA GTX 660M graphics card that will give you fantastic performance, and also be a bit more future-proof in case you wanted to expand your gaming horizon in the coming months.
Good luck, always good to have more PC gamers.
    FOR THE HORDE!

  • What is the BEST gaming laptop for under $3,000.00

I am looking around and comparing gaming PCs and laptops.  I am strongly leaning toward a laptop because I already have a fairly nice PC, but it really isn't built for gaming.  Any advice or suggestions are appreciated.  I like:

If your budget is $3000, build a new gaming PC, or overhauling your current one to gaming specs.

Unfortunately, that's the bad luck of any electronic, there's going to be bad Apples... wait that's a horrible pun.

  • I am in the market for a new HP Laptop.

I am in the market for a new HP Laptop seeing as how my current one is starting to die out on me. I am looking for one that would last me at least 3 or more years like my current has and i kinda have one i like in mind at this link:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/envy-17-3-laptop-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive/9769246.p?id=1219041359741&sk...
So my my main question is going to be this: Does Best buy match prices or beat them out if i find the same model cheaper and with a mail in rebate on another retailer's website such as office depot?
I am doing price comparisons right now, because i don't know how long my current HP Pavillion Entertainment PC will hold out. I have had it for 3 years and now my on board graphics chipset or the LCD Monitor one are starting to mess up on me and i had to replace the fan and battery almost 2 or 3 months ago and now this issue is popping up. It boots up with a green screen when i turn it on at the moment, but then after it has warmed up the screen clears back up like normal. So that is why i figured that it is about time for a newer model laptop and where my researching and price comparing will come in down the line.
If you have any other laptop suggestions for me to at least look at please tell me. I want at least 750 GB or 1 TB HDD and an Intel Core i5 or I7 Processor in these suggestions too, because i do heavy duty Video Editing and Processing for my website and for Video Game Video Walkthroughs and need not only the best Processor it can handle, but for website backups and for the space doing Webcam video recordings can handle too.
Thanks for any suggestions you may have and if the current one i have linked is worth my time in saving for please be so kind as if to let me know that as well. I don't care if it has a Touch Screen or not. But any suggestion for research is always welcome.

The RAM of my HP Pavillion Dv4-2164us model is currently 4, but it is starting to boot up with a green screen when I first start it. So I am thinking about going with the J020 Envy which is a 17 Screen display or I might go for this:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/envy-touchsmart-17-3-touch-screen-laptop-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive/18203... if I go 4th gen Intel Core i7 Processor and Touch Screen
The next thing after I save up after getting whatever next Laptop I buy will be a Cooling Pad and an External HDD that I can put into one of the USB Ports or where ever you hook them up so that I can backup it up for a rainy day as they say.
The only reason why I am not opting for the becoming popular SSD is the Price tag to get the amount of space I would need is still out of my price range if I got one included. I have to be realistic and on budget as much as I don't want to be.
If I went 4th gen I5 I might get something like this:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/envy-17-3-laptop-8gb-memory-750gb-hard-drive/2354033.p?id=1219072210771&...
I would have shown a 15 screen laptop, but the CD/DVD Combo drive is not included in any of them. I would need one to back up my new laptop's OS and files the first week I use it to save from having to reformat or reinstall stuff if things even got messed up.
I have been thinking a lot about all of this not like it was a just now knowing this type of thing either. I have known for some time about that. Thanks for trying to help too.

    Hi Kelly,
As someone who has to print from my Mac to a networked printer at home all the time, I can certainly understand how frustrating it must be to have that fail to perform as expected. Let's see if we can get you up and running.

  • New cube laptop - not showing Maxtor external hard-drive in windows explorer, but showing up in Device manager.

    Hi
If anyone is able to give me some advice I'd really appreciate it. I have seen similar issues on here and tried uninstalling then re-installing the driver which seemed to fix the similar issue on someone's Windows 7 system but it doesn't seem
to have worked for me. I also tried using the usb 2 drive rather than the usb 3.
I have a new cube laptop with Windows 8 (which I'm not used to yet at all) and am trying to access the files from the Maxtor hard-drive from my old pc. The hard-drive does not show up under file explorer but seems to appear in device manager. The
laptop makes noises occasionally as if it is detecting some hardware but not showing it.
    Can anyone suggest a fix?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    Apologize for the late reply.
How about the situation by now?
Could the external hard drive be shown in the
    disk management?
Or take a look at the format of that hard drive(list disks) with diskpart command:
A Description of the Diskpart Command-Line Utility
Check if the format is NTFS.
Also please take a look at the following article:

  • How can I install my pantech um290 on a new toshiba laptop?

Bought a new toshiba laptop today, installed vz access for the pantech 290 and cannot connect to the internet.  I contacted tech support, and they attempted to help me, but there really was no help.  I am running windows 7 on the newbie.  I installed, detected the device, and kept getting error message wmc100.  Tech support advised me to uninstall it, shut it down, open it back up, install it, shut it down, open it back up and attempt to log on.  Still got the same error message.
<sigh>  if only I could afford a new mac laptop.  It really is my preference........

The first thing I would do is take evsotech suggestion to install the updated version of the software because the cd has a habit of having out dated software on the cd, go to http://vzam.net/ and download the most recent version of the software..
Now as for having driver issues, basically to make sure you have all your drivers installed correctly go to your desktop and right click on the
    1."Computer" icon and select
    2."Properties" and then select
    3. Device Manager located on the left boarder....
    4. Once the screen comes up that shows a list with all the hardware on your PC  (Check for any yellow triangle or red exclamation point) because this will indicate a missing driver..
After checking this please report back...
