  • How can I make a new genius mix? Apple has made two automatically, but I would like one based on other genres within my iTunes library. I have tried updating my genius mixes to no avail.

How can I make a new genius mix? I do not want to make a genius playlist. Genius has already created two mixes but I would like another based on other genres within my extensive music library. I have tried updating Genius from Store>Update Genius but to no avail. Thank you!

Hi. The two user tips both describe a sequence of steps that should get your library from the point where it threatens to wipe data from your device to where it is syncing normally, while recovering as much information as possible. It may still be necessary to wipe and reload the device but this should only take place once all the data that can be recovered has been recovered.
Doing step 1 of 8 and then complaining things aren't the way you want them to be yet strikes me as premature...
Since you appear to have all your media content, and we are discussing an iPod classic, not an iOS device, the main worries are already taken care of. What's left is ratings, playcounts, playlist membership and checked status. Since your device holds only part of your library at best you could only recover the missing data for the content that is on the device using third party tools.
Recreating the previous checked/unchecked status of every track in your library from where you are now may not be that easy. Syncing with selected playlists has many advantages, one of which would have been that you would have a named playlist that could have been retrieved by 3rd party software if you had used this method.
You haven't explained what caused your problem in the first place, but if you have a Previous iTunes Libraries folder holding old copies of your iTunes database (generated with each iTunes update) then it would be possible to restore the most recent of these and then update the library with any changes in your media folder.
BTW Apple doesn't offer free support for this kind of issue with iTunes.

  • Need some Help with the new Genius Mixes on iTunes 9

I would like to know how to use the New Genius Mixes on iTunes 9. I don't quit know how to use it yet and like all of us we're all just learning how to use the Genius Mixes. I did watch the KeyNote but they didn't go into great detail on how to use it. Does Apple have a web site that has more detail instruction on how to use the genius Mixes? I did find some info. on how to use the Genius mixes but it didn't go into great detail on how or what to do with the genius Mixex and thats what I need.
when I click on the genius Mixes icon under the "Genius", what shows up is a Big square with four album images of my music that I have in my music collection, I go and roll my mouse over the Big square with my four music albums and click on it to play the music and it'll play what ever I have in the Genius Mix list plus as I roll my mouse over the Big Square, under it it says "Jazz Mix" with some text writings under the Jazz mix.
I want to change the Jazz mix Title and I want to know how to add more music square boxes to my Genius Mixes just like they show in the Keynote and I would like to edit and create my own four square music boxes in my Genius Mixes.
I never used my music genius list, I always created just a play List, now I am just learning how to use this music Genius lists and I don't know how to use it at all and I need someone that knows how to use thr Genius Mixes list to help me how to use it since there isn't a how to book yet for the new iTunes 9.
Can someone Please help me with the new genius Mixes on iTunes.
    Thank you,
    Mrs Trisha Foster

Today, I was getting an array out of bounds exception on a split
I don't see how that could happen with the 'split' method since it creates its own array.
    For this particular string, ordSplit.length = 24 and commas = 26.
PERFECT! That is exactly what it should be!
Look closely at the end of the sample string you posted and you will see that it has trailing empty strings at the end: '1096200000000242505,,,'
Then if you read the Javadocs for the 'split' method you will find that those will NOT be included in the resulting array:
    http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/lang/String.html#split(java.lang.String)
    split
    public String[] split(String regex)
Splits this string around matches of the given regular expression.  This method works as if by invoking the two-argument split method with the given expression and a limit argument of zero. Trailing empty strings are therefore not included in the resulting array.
Just a hunch but your 'out of bounds exception' is likely due to your code assuming that there will be 26 entries in the array and there are really only 24.

  • How do I get new Genius Mixes?

I click Genius Mixes and it's always the same old mixes. How do I create/get new Genius Mixes?

You need to update your genius and you'll get the mix with your new genius results. If it isn't updating there may be an issue with your library that's stopping the error - either 4002 or 4010 errors. I would turn genius on an off in the "Store" menu then update genius. If that doesn't work (it didn't for me) here's what I did to get it working:
Turns out there was an overriding issue with dead tracks for me.
    - Turn Genius off - this will delete the genius results.
    - Download the iTunes script Super Remove Dead Tracks http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=removedeadsuper
    - Install and run according to directions
    - Turn genius on
Hopefully this fixes the issues and you'll get genius mixes when it stops updating.

  • How do I sync the new Genius Mixes to my iPod?

I watched all the videos, and it said Genius Mixes would automatically sync to my iPod, but it didn't. Any suggestions? Has anyone else had this problem?

The new Genius mixes do not sync to a 4th gen nano.

  • How does 3.1's new "Genius Mix" differ from a Genius Playlist?

Hey guys I still haven't updated to 3.1 because of all the complaints and issues associated with it, but I was curious about one feature I'm missing out on... How does the new Genius Mix any different than an automated Genius Playlist that is made when you turn on Genius on your iPhone???
Genius just collects up to 25 songs by different artists in the same genre... What does Genius Mix do differently?
Thanks to anybody who answers me... I'm just curious, that's all.

Genius mixes are created in iTunes 9. It's like Genius, but different. Genius mixes come automatically.
"This new feature searches your iTunes library, finds songs that go great together, and creates multiple mixes you’ll love. All automatically. These mixes are like channels programmed entirely with your music. You may discover songs you never knew you had — and rediscover forgotten favorites."
iTunes will create up to 12 Genius mixes, like Rock Mix 1, Rock Mix 2, Oldies Mix, Alternative
Mix, etc. These are like radio stations created from your own music. The songs in the mix can't can't be listed.
Go here and scroll down to Genius Mix. http://www.apple.com/itunes/whats-new/

  • New Mac Trojan

    How to protect yourself.
    1) Launch the Terminal app
    2) Enter in the command line
sudo ipfw add 1000 deny all from any to 176.58.100.37
    3)Enter Password
Your firewall is now updated to protect against this trojan.

As Terence says, a trojan is NOT a virus.
It may seem like a minor distinction, but a virus can come onto a computer via an e-mail attachment, embedded into an email, or something loaded from the internet, CD/DVD, USB drive, etc., then replicate itself to, say, everyone in your address book, +all without any action by you+. There are hundreds of thousands of them for PCs. At the moment, for Macs there are exactly zero known viruses. None. Zip. Zilch. So don't panic.
It is possible, though, for you to get one of these. It won't do any harm on your Mac, but if you send it to a PC user, it may spread. If you want, you can get anti-virus software for this purpose. The one I see recommended most is ClamXav, and is free. Like many Mac users, I don't run any.
There is malware, including trojans, for Macs, though far fewer than for PCs. As reported, all these require some action by you -- and in those cases where they come with pirated software, you obviously would have to be a thief, too (poetic justice?).

  • How to create new genius playlists from existing music in library?

I tried the genius button for creating lists from existing music in my library. The problem is that it continues to show the first list created no matter what song I highlight then hit the genius button. Genius works fine for creating lists I can purchase online, but not new ones from my own music.

As you are running Windows you will probably get a better response from posting in the iTunes for Windows forum:

  • NEW APPLE TROJAN DISCOVERED

A newly identified Mac OS X Trojan bundles a component that leverages the processing power of video cards (GPUs) to generate Bitcoins, a popular type of virtual currency.
The new Trojan was dubbed DevilRobber by antivirus vendors and is being distributed together with several software applications via BitTorrent sites.
“This malware is complex, and performs many operations,” security researchers from Mac antivirus vendor Intego warned. “It is a combination of several types of malware: It is a Trojan horse, since it is hidden inside other applications; it is a backdoor, as it opens ports and can accept commands from command and control servers; it is a stealer, as it steals data and Bitcoin virtual money; and it is a spyware, as it sends personal data to remote servers,” they explained.
The Bitcoin mining program that DevilRobber installs on infected computers is called DiabloMiner and is a legitimate Java-based application used in the virtual currency’s production.
Bitcoin is a form of virtual cash that can be exchanged by users without the need for an intermediary bank or payment service. Bitcoins are actually cryptographic hashes that get generated piece by piece using specialized programs like DiabloMiner, according to a public algorithm.
One Bitcoin is currently valued at around $3.20, and it is a good source of profit for both Bitcoin miners, who legitimately use their computer resources to generate them, and cybercriminals who steal them.
The DevilRobber trojan steals processing power, which can lead to slow computer performance, as well as actual Bitcoins, which are kept in virtual wallets on the victim’s machine.

    Credit ProtectMac with this description:
New Mac OS X Trojan distributed via BitTorrent file-sharing sites
    01/11/11 12:13
A new Mac OS X Trojan has been discovered on BitTorrent sites. The threat, dubbed OSX.DevilRobber or OSX.Miner, has appeared within legitimate copies of GraphicConverter v7.4, Flux v3.2.5 and CorelPainter v12, which the virus writer has modified and posted on the file-sharing websites. The Trojan is installed on your computer when the parent application’s installer is run.
The threat appears to be quite sophisticated, adopting a multi-pronged approach to harvesting personal details from your computer, including stored information from encryption software and Safari, and sends this to a remote server. In addition, the Trojan utilizes your Graphics processor (GPU) to perform calculations required to undertake bitcoin mining, hence the name. If it discovers a bitcoin wallet it will save that, too.
If your Mac becomes infected by this Trojan then the first thing you may notice is a sluggishness as it performs the bitcoin permutations required for ‘mining’. Check for the presence of a folder in your login user area called ~/Library/mdsa1331/ and a launch agent file in ~/Library/LaunchAgents/ that looks unfamiliar. The current version of the trojan creates a startup file, which at first glance appears to have come from Apple, com.apple.legion.plist.
Interestingly, the Trojan script exits if it detects that LittleSnitch, a network analyzing tool, is installed on your Mac. Presumably this is because it will highlight network traffic and raise awareness of the Trojan’s presence in the wild.
As always, we advise extreme caution when downloading software from file-sharing websites as you don’t always get what you expect. Unfortunately in this case you get a lot more than you bargained for!
ProtectMac AntiVirus detects this new Trojan as OSX.DevilRobber.
Participants in this forum discussion appear to have been infected by a different version.

  • How do you create a new Genius Mix

Somehow I have ended up with one Genius Mix. It is labeled "Classical Mix". It appeared without my intervention. Can someone tell me how to create additional Genius Mixes?

Jim -- thanks. I tried your suggestions, but I seem to be stuck with the one mix (the same one).
I don't have a real extensive library of albums, but I do have a fair number of individual songs and few if any of these unchecked. The one mix I have is based on four albums and "others". I am not sure what "others" means, but I do have those four complete albums in the library. Maybe that's the key.

  • New Trojan Horses

Last night, I made the mistake of downloading an app called "Wine" and "Winebottler". These are apps that allow Windows programs to be played on Macintosh without installing Windows. I ended up with 13 new OSX Trojan Horses on my Macintosh. These apps kept on installing add ons to the iTunes Store. I knew I was in trouble immediately, I guess, by instinct.I had also installed Wineskin for the same purpose, but I don't think that was the problem as I found no Trojan Horses associated with this app. I had my security set to download from App Store and Trusted Developers only. I am now going to upgrade my security to download from App Store only now, but I don't know for sure if that will help.
Luckily, I had Kaspersky on my Mac, and it kept on finding Trojan Horses on a full scan. I had firevault on and iCloud on. I am wondering now if my iCloud account is infected. I am currently erasing my whole hard drive and reinstalling. I will not turn on iCloud until I get some advice. For those that are unaware, I know we are in a cyberwar. I don't know where these apps originated, but I wanted the community to know this. I've used Macintosh since the first day it was available in 1984. I've never had troubles with viruses and Trojan Horses like this, except for two that were found by Kaspersky a couple of months ago and were easily found, isolated and disinfected. Not these. Most were easily disinfected: all but two. I had to restart the computer and Kaspersky got rid of them. Kaspersky is a great program, but I wasn't sure if it got rid of everything, which led me to erase and reinstall.
Please inform my about how secure iCloud is against attached viruses or should I delete my account.

    I downloaded from WineHQ.org.
I doubt that because WineHQ doesn't have any Mac versions of Wine available. They distribute Linux binaries and source. If you downloaded a Mac version, it must have come from somewhere else.
As soon as I downloaded it and the Winebottler, I knew I had problems.
    Why?
I took your earlier advice: left OS10.9.1 in place and turned iCloud back on. I hope I made the right decision. I did not delete Kaspersky because OSX did not delete the Trojan or prevent it from being downloaded. Kaspersky did.
But you are in a catch-22 situation here. These forums are full of people reporting problems with computers and antivirus is a very common cause. By comparison, there are far fewer people reporting problems with trojans. Are these programs really trojans? And even if they are, would they cause as much trouble and be as difficult to remove as antivirus? I doubt it
As far as I can tell WineHQ must be a trusted developer, because that is how my computer is set as I previously stated.
I would definitely consider WineHQ to be trustworthy (more so than antivirus vendors) but they definitely do not have an Apple Developer ID that would enable them to distribute software past Gatekeeper. Someone malicious may have repackaged Wine, added trojans, and signed it with a Developer ID. The only way to address that problem is to identify where you got the software so that the illicit Developer ID can be revoked.
I did not download these programs to play games. That's for Millenials. I downloaded these because Windows is a disaster, and I didn't want to load Windows on my computer. There are Windows programs that there is no equivalent in Mac.
It doesn't matter why you downloaded them. If they are Windows programs, you are going to have to run Windows. Wine is a cool project, but very little software actually works on it.
I also deleted Adobe Flash Player as was advised in another thread. Now I can't see instructions in YouTube. Does the App Store have a recommended flash player to see You Tube?
Download Adobe Flash directly from Adobe and installer. Then download the Click2Flash Safari extension: http://hoyois.github.io/safariextensions/clicktoplugin/ so you can avoid Flash, if possible. If you ever get any Flash popup asking for an update, always close it - always. Then go to the Adobe Flash site yourself and see if there is an update and download it.
I downloaded the program from WineHQ. It's in my history. I went back and looked today. I don't think Linux has an iTunes version. I downloaded a program I didn't request that attached itself to iTunes. This is how I knew I had problems.
I appreciate all the advice: dismissive or not. It did give me confidence there's nothing wrong with my computer. I just don't have faith in Mac like I used to. I'm guessing that the trojans were not real, but I'm glad I had a device to delete the false positives, if for no other reason than it made me feel better. Any website can be attacked by hackers. Maybe that's what happened to WineHQ.

  • New Trojan to watch out for on Market...

pandora that have advertisement on them.  will they if accidently touch in the advertisement  area cause this problem to pop up.
This is directed to a infected file and does not apply to all advertisement on all apps but like article reported to use causion if a app wants to open a browser to download something from the market, the market does not use outside link sources.
And on my texting i dont use any text services from the Market. i go to my contacts an send a text that way or when i send a Email
The method of Premium Messages is a old tactic used to charge a monthly fee directly to you phone bill and has nothing to due with Market, usually it requires a user to place their cell number to download something from the site and once this information they activate a monthly email to device that will charge usually a 9.99 fee to bill as if it was a requested service from the user.... This is why I suggested disabling this with Verizon so if a site attempt this it will instantly restrict the account from being setup..
i'll use my Gmail or yahoo. I dont use I M messaging.  And doing your updates on your apps! this is still ok ?  or should that be
It is wise to continue updates because developers usually add security improvement to minimize their app from being hijacked, plus is a app gets modified and posted as a popular app that is already installed the verification signature usually wont match and it will not be able to override file so installation will probably fail.

  • I believe an Apple Genius has damaged my computer, what can I do?

I took my Mac Pro to the Apple Store today to get a heatsink looked at (it's overheating). I know the heat sink retainer clip is broken, you can see it with a flashlight. So I asked the Genius to take a look at it.
He took the processor board out of the machine with a ground strap on and took it into the back room where he continued to take off the CPU heatsinks so he could get a look at the faulty heat sink (northbridge). He puts it back together, brings it back out to me WITHOUT a ground strap on. He tells me they can't sell me only the retainer clip, the best they can do is sell me a brand new processor board. $330. I told him I'd shop around for a better price (come on, it's just a standard plastic heat sink push pin).
So I take my machine home and plug it in and turn it on. No chime, no boot. Uh oh! Maybe he just didn't push the processor board in all the way, so I ground up with my ESD strap and reseat the processor board.
So the machine finally turns on and I get to the gray boot screen, which suddenly has a kernel panic... Recovery partition also gives me a kernel panic... and my snow leopard DVD also gives me a kernel panic... but I can successfully boot to Windows 7! All right!
However, Windows is reporting that I only have 4 CPU cores (the machine is supposed to have 8) and that I only have 3 GB of RAM (I have 6 GB installed)... I begin to think that the Apple Genius has installed the processor wrong.
So I take the machine back to the Genius Bar, explaining what happened to a different person this time (original guy was gone). Now the machine won't even boot into Windows, or even get the gray boot screen... the same issue I had as soon as I got home... Except this time, reseating the CPU board isn't helping.
The new genius starts telling me that the processor board was broken when I came in earlier, and I tell her that this is a new problem that I didn't have before I came by the first time.... The only thing that was broken about it was the heatsink push pin. I explain to her that the Genius before could have reinstalled a processor incorrectly, as I understand that human error happens (I work at an electronics manufacturing company).
She tells me that the only thing he did was detailed in his notes he left behind earlier (which were vague, and left out the part where he took apart my processor board). She starts telling me that there's nothing they can do now except charge me for a new processor board.
I do not want to pay for a processor board that the Apple Genius may have broken earlier today. He was not grounded when he was handling my board and may have damaged something unintentionally. I'm frustrated at the thought of paying a lot of money for something I did not break.
Is there anything I can do? Who can I talk to about this? Apple seems to be impossible to get a hold of.

sorry, but Apple doesn't really read or have much to do with stuff that's posted here. Your best bet may be to speak to the Manager of the store or call/email Apple. Retain all documents,  make your case thoroughly but politely, and cross your fingers. an EECB* may work as well, but be polite-maybe asking to speak to a supervisor?

  • How do you get an Ipod Classic to make Genius mixes using the songs you want?

My Ipod Classic is now about four years old. it's the grey, 160gb model. the hard drive doesn't click, so it's in stable, working condition, as far as I can tell, but lately, I've been having a few problems with it. first and foremost, it's stubbornly refusing to make Genius Playlists for me, using the songs I want. Secondly, it's not playing some songs. now, the second issue isn't new, and I've fixed it before, but that brings me to my third issue.
when opening Klondikes (because that's the only game I play on my ipod out of the three that come with it) the other day, it gave me an error message stating "game cannot be opened because ipod is full" or something like that. I have 160 gigabytes of storage, and all I have on there is music.
anyway, back to the Genius problem.
So I'll tell the Ipod to make a new Genius Mix from a selected song. in this case, I'll use Alestorm's "Keelhauled" for example. I made an edit of the song, decreasing the tempo, and drawing out the length of the song to 4:20. every single time, the ipod will use that instead of the original.
Say I use "I See Fire" by Ed Sheeran (from The Hobbit, of course). the ipod uses the Kygo Remix I have.
Say I use "One Eight Zero" by Grendel. it uses the remix.
Say I use "The Sunk'n Norwegian", by Alestorm. the Ipod uses the Acoustic version.
Say I use "7 Days to the wolves", by Nightwish. it actually uses that song, and not the Instrumental version.
for "Whispers In The Dark", by Skillet, it doesn't use it, or the Instrumental version cause it can't find a match. (not a problem, just extraneous information.)
Say I use "We Can Make The World Stop" by The Glitch Mob. it uses a piano cover.
the trend I'm noticing here is that it only applies to songs with remixes. but as I have 1408 songs on my ipod, and need to be at work in an hour, I'm not going to look through everything to find every single instance of this.
the ID3 tags for these songs are correct.
Now, this is likely just a tagging issue, but the software should treat them as different songs. after all, most of them are stored in completely different blocks of memory. most of these are even different genres than the originals. and in the case of Keelhauled, because I exported the remix from Garageband, I'm listed as the Artist.
can someone please explain to me what's going on with my ipod, or give me some insight into what's going on under the hood?

A "classic" iPod is really a hard drive with a media player tacked on.  Like any hard drive (including your computer's), it can develop data corruption.  For example, maybe you mistakenly or accidentally disconnected it from the computer while it was syncing.  Or you dropped it, while the iPod was trying to access its drive for song data.  Or the hard drive can be getting worn out and unreliable.
The Restore will not fix the problem if the hard drive is becoming faulty.  But if the data corruption was caused by something else, the Restore should fix it by erasing the hard drive to give it a "fresh start," like reformatting your computer's drive and reinstalling the OS.

  • Creating a genius bar reservation in apple store app?

There's no way to create a new Genius Bar reservation with this app. Each time I tap the "Genius Bar" button on a store's reservation page, I end up on a page with two buttons: "Help" and "Call Apple" and a pop-up message that says "There is nothing scheduled for this store". There is nothing to do on that page.  I can change existing reservations and I can make one on one reservations, but I can't make Genius Bar reservations. I've tried with many different stores and it's the same for all of them.
Any one find a way of doing this?

I came up with the same results.
