New glitches in FCP 7 after transitions or layers. Any suggestions?

New glitches are showing up in FCP 7 after I add a transition or layer to my videos that look like a split-second zoom in/out. I can't see them moving frame-by-frame but I can in playback AND after exporting. I'm not doing anything new. What's going on?!
Someone recommended I try trashing preferences with Preference Manager and I tried it but hasn't change anything.
I have a Mac OS X 10.5.8 and am using Final Cut Pro 7.0.3.

I have never touched the sequence settings so everything must be set to the default settings. I'm working with m4v files (home videos ripped from DVD). I've never taken any fcp classes or anything so I've just been learning as I go. Any specific information I can look up? These glitches are showing up all over the place now.
Last night I put together lots of clips from my digital video camera. The playback in the canvas looked smooth (except when I tried to add a second video layer of text in the timeline so I got rid of it) but when exporting as a QuickTime movie, the movie was filled with glitches (split-second jumps to shots earlier or later in the clip). Exporting as an mp4 file worked okay, just terrible video quality of course.
This all just seems so bizarre! I have months' work of a documentary I'm making of my grandmother in progress. I live in Beijing and don't know if there are any experts here who can take a look at my computer for me. I have to figure this out! Thanks for your help...

Its cheaper than Numbers and it also works for Word and PowerPoint files too. I like the Dropbox integration. I can start on my Office docs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) in the office and then edit those files with Office2HD when I'm out of the office. Files saves right back to Dropbox so that when I get back to the office the files are already updated. Not bad for a $7.99 app!

If your external drive does not have an independent power supply, you may wish to consider a couple of lower-cost options before tossing the drive. Bus-powered drives have no external power source and must get all their power from the computer. They can exceed the computer's USB energy budget.
Cheapest option:
1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
This gets power from two of the computers USB porst sna can provide enough power to wake up an under-performaing bus-powered drive.
If you don't have enough ports to use this, try the next cheapest option:
Newer Technology 7 Port Hi-Speed USB 2.0 Hub with Power Adapter for Mac & PC
Such a hub has a an independent power supply to make up for wahat the comptuer fails to provide.

I haven't checked reviews recently but there's a difference between bare drives and drives with enclosures. Western Digital made some of the most reliable drives last time I checked, though the enclosures weren't all that great. It is convenient to get both in one package but I usually buy a highly rated enclosure and then put a highly rated drive in it myself. OWC sells some good enclosures but if they put a so-so drive inside of it then the package is only as good as its weakest component. If you get a package from them, ask them what drive is inside (some vendors have no idea what's inside - went to an Apple Store recently and they couldn't tell me what was inside some of their Apple brand enclosures). My first thought if buying a new drive would be to buy a OWC enclosure with a WD drive, but chek around because I may be out of date.
10 years ago Seagate was one of the best drives. Now they rate poorly in reviews.

Try an SMC reset and PRAM reset: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3603
If that doesn't help:
See if it will start in Safe Boot: restart holding down the Shift key until you see a grey progress bar, type your admin password when prompted, let it continue to (hopefully) boot. Restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If that didn't help, try booting into the Recovery HD: restart holding down Command+r and choose Disk Utility from the four choices when they appear on screen. Once DU has launched select your Macintosh HD on the left and click on 'repair disk'. If anything gets changed click on repair disk again until you get a clear pass, restart as normal from the Apple menu.
If you still have problems, give AppleCare a call.

You should Reset your iPod, by
1. Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 Secs till the Apple Logo comes ON.
2. Disconnect the sync cable.
3. Check the iPod Welcome screen, select language, go to menu (if you are lucky, your music are still on the iPod.)
if your iPod doesn't show the Welcome screen, bring it to Apple Store.
If the above is okay, (can see Menu but no Music)
4. Close iTunes and Reboot your PC.
5. Start iTunes
6. Connect the iPod to the Sync cable.
7. if iTunes ask to Restore, please do so.
8. Sync your iPod. ( I would advise you to disconnect from Internet and stop the Antivirus program when doing this.)
