New guy

just a couple quick questions.I just got a mac mini w/ garage band
1)Are the loops that are greyed out in the jam pack,,,or is there another way to get them..
2) and if i open a intrument track ,,,just play a bunch of random notes...then save in my loop browser,,then drop back in a song.,,will they sound nsync with my song. I is that easy,,,I hope so>>>i just hate using somebody else loops..unless its a small sound like a tic or just a percussion

http://seminars.apple.com/seminarsonline/garageband/apple/index1.html This is a good seminar, there are 3 videos you can watch. The first one is 31 minutes long , at about the 17 -26 minute point in vid they talk about creating your own loops. lot's of good info , just click on above link

  • New Guy Question about Name Changes from Logical to Relational

    Sorry for the "New Guy" question. I am trying to do this the way I wished it worked rather than the way it does.
    Lets say I have an Entity named "Current Database" with an Attribute named "Current Database Name". All this is in plan english for the Logical Model. Now when I generate the Relational Model I would like the Table named "CDCD_CURRENT_DB" and the column named "CURRENT_DB_NAME".
    I have been working with a Glossary and some other features trying to get this to work. It kind of does but I do not fully get it and I think I am missing out on much of the power of the product. I have been forcing the Nickname "CDCD" (As we call it) and the "Database" to "DB" in the "Preferred Abbreviation" of the Entity.
    I am working with v3.3.0.734
    Thanks for the help.

    Hi Sky13,
    it can be done with glossary but it looks to me what you want is not that native to glossary approach.
    it's good to look here for basics http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/datamodeler/datamodelernamingstandards-167685.pdf
    Example here also could be useful if you want to go with glossary - Re: Data Modeler: Naming
    If you want to use preferred abbreviation then it should be CDCD_CURRENT_DB.
    For me CDCD_ is just a prefix - you can handle it separately in relational model - on whole model, on subview and in both cases classification types also can be used to determine how objects are prefixed.
    You don't want Current to be abbreviated then do not put it in glossary however you need to check "Incomplete modifiers" check box in glossary.
    Entity property "Short name" goes to table abbreviation during engineering. There is a transformation script which will prefix table columns with table abbreviation if you need it. And another one can remove the prefix.
    You can define plural name in glossary and if entity name is a single word then plural will be used during name translation.

  • Please help the new guy with a picture issue :) Thanks

    Hey guys,
    DrOnePocket here...  I am on my second BB now and love it.  I retired  my curve finally and got a Verizon Tour 9630
    I have some pictures that I have taken with my phone and when I used Media Manager on my desktop to save the pics to a file on my PC, I can't open them.  Windows has no clue what program to use to open them and I did a basic google search and landed here.
    Example file name
    IMG00016-20100327-1607.jpg
    Both my Desktop Manager and my Media Manager sometimes freeze up Vista as well.
    Help is appreciated very much!!!

    Don't use Media Manager.
    Transfer the file(s) to your PC per instructions here, using Mass Storage Mode on your BlackBerry.
    1. Go to Options >> Media Card
    (some themes or BlackBerrys may call this "Settings >> Media Card")
    2. Check the following settings (if they are not listed this way, then change to reflect the following:
    a) Media Card Support: On
    b) Mass Storage Mode Support: On
    c) Auto Enable Mass Storage: Yes
    3. Save the settings and exit
    4. Connect your BlackBerry to the PC via a USB cable. Upon connection you may see a Removable Drive appear in your file manager on the PC, or look in My Computer. From there navigate to the newly added Removable drives and explore. Copy the file needed to your PC.

  • Finally made the switch! New guy.

    Hello all. I am a very proud owner of an old iBook G3. I couldnt be happier! I wish I wouldve tried a Mac earlier in life. Like all new converts I have some questions. I bought it used and the person who sold it to me said it had been "refurbished" by his friend. He installed more RAM (640) and a new Fujitsu 30gb hard drive. The main issues I'm noticing is the battery says 59% charged and when I push the button on the battery it shows 3 lights. Yet, when I try to start it up without the power adapter nothing comes on. Also, the bottom left gets very warm. I read that I shouldnt have it on the bed or in my lap. Three of the rubber feet are missing but I'm going to order those from Microdoc. Finally he gave me all the discs plus the 2 discs for OS X 10.4.9. I know thats Tiger and better than the 10.2 on their now. Can I install the 10.4.9?
    Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

    Hi, Coach! Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    You are correct. Those install discs won't work on the iBook. You could sell the discs (locally or on eBay).
    There were three different models of the iBook 700 MHz, including one 14-inch model.
    The 12-inch model is 11.2 inches wide; the 14-inch model is 12.7 inches wide.
    What kind of optical drive does it have? (CD-ROM only or Combo? (Applications > Utilities > System Profiler)
    Most retail Tiger installation discs are DVD, so if you want to install Tiger it would be helpful if it is not CD-ROM only.

  • For New Guys, Simpleton pattern revisited...

    In the March 2004 issue of Java Patterns there is an article called "OO Patterns for Extensive Coding With OverTyping and Generic Exclamations". The article introduces the simpleton pattern, citing a similar pardigm in the C programming world. Using the simpleton pattern the following code,
    * Test.java
    * Created on May 14, 2004, 2:54 PM
    package tmp;
    * @author  awaddi
    public class Test
         private int _pNumberOfFileWritesInt;
         private int _pNumberOfFileReadsInt;
         /** Creates a new instance of Test */
         public Test()
              _pNumberOfFileWritesInt = 0;
         public void write( Object data )
              // write the data
              set_pNumberOfFileWritesInt(  get_pNumberOfFileWritesInt() + 1  );
         public void read( Object data )
              // read the data
              set_pNumberOfFileReadsInt(  get_pNumberOfFileReadsInt() + 1  );
          * Getter for property _pNumberOfFileWritesInt.
          * @return Value of property _pNumberOfFileWritesInt.
         public int get_pNumberOfFileWritesInt()
              return _pNumberOfFileWritesInt;
          * Setter for property _pNumberOfFileWritesInt.
          * @param _pNumberOfFileWritesInt New value of property _pNumberOfFileWritesInt.
         public void set_pNumberOfFileWritesInt(int _pNumberOfFileWritesInt)
              this._pNumberOfFileWritesInt = _pNumberOfFileWritesInt;
          * Getter for property _pNumberOfFileReadsInt.
          * @return Value of property _pNumberOfFileReadsInt.
         public int get_pNumberOfFileReadsInt()
              return _pNumberOfFileReadsInt;
          * Setter for property _pNumberOfFileReadsInt.
          * @param _pNumberOfFileReadsInt New value of property _pNumberOfFileReadsInt.
         public void set_pNumberOfFileReadsInt(int _pNumberOfFileReadsInt)
              this._pNumberOfFileReadsInt = _pNumberOfFileReadsInt;
         public static void main(  String[] args  )
              Test aTest = new Test();
              // write twenty lines to a file
              while(  aTest.get_pNumberOfFileWritesInt() < 20  )
                   aTest.write(  "a line"  );
                   System.out.println("Reads: " + aTest.get_pNumberOfFileReadsInt()  );
                   System.out.println("Writes: " + aTest.get_pNumberOfFileWritesInt()  );
              System.out.println("Done!");
              System.exit( 0 );
    }could be replaced using the Simpleton Pattern. Though the article was complex, I believe it raised some salient points, particularly in regard to many current idioms that new programmers are faced with. While the above code example demonstrates several principles that are important for new programmers to adhere to, a la "Ultimate Java Coding Style and Superb Idioms for Defensive Programming", the Simpleton Pattern utilises a different approach:
    class ReadWriteCounter
         public int reads = 0;
         public int writes = 0;
         public void write( Object data )
              // write the data
              writes++;
         public void read( Object data )
              // read the data
              reads++;
         public static void main(  String[] args  )
              ReadWriteCounter counter = new ReadWriteCounter();
              // write twenty lines to a file
              while(  counter.writes < 20  )
                   counter.write(  "a line"  );
                   System.out.println("Reads: " + counter.reads  );
                   System.out.println("Writes: " + counter.writes  );
              System.out.println("Done!");
              System.exit( 0 );
    }While the Simpleton pattern is useful, it has some disadvantages:
    When you sell your programmes, other programmers will be able to modify the internal state of your classes.
    Synchronisation of variable access can only be achieved by using volatile members, this is inherently error-prone as volatile variables are often guaranteed to provide semi-deterministic member access and may change the values of variables in common circumstances (never use the volatile keyword, it is dangerous).
    The use of C-like structs is likely to cause many programming errors, contrary to popular belief, int[] z; (z[0]+4) = 22; will not assign the value of 22 to the second item in the z array. Java uses object references, NOT ADDRESS POINTERS.
    So when is the Simpleton pattern a bad thing? In years of Java programming I have found that in 99% of the cases the Simpleton pattern is all that is needed, however, when referring to references of Objects that are shared between classes, the normal getter/setter is really useful. Consider:
    class ResultCode
         String value;
         public ResultCode( String s )
              value = s;
    class FileOperationA
         ResultCode code;
         public FileOperationA(  ResultCode c  )
              code = c;
         public void someOp()
              System.out.println("code:" + code.value );
    class FileOperationB
         ResultCode code;
         public FileOperationB(  ResultCode c  )
              code = c;
         public void someOp()
              System.out.println("code:" + code.value );
    class DirectoryOne
         FileOperationA a;
         FileOperationB b;
         public DirectoryOne()
              ResultCode c = new ResultCode( "OK" );
              a = new FileOperationA( c );
              b = new FileOperationB( c );
              // a and b share a reference to an underlaying object, not a primitive
         public void changeCodeString()
              a.code = new ResultCode(  "It's all good" ); // replaces OK as the message, but just for a
              // now a and b have different code values, wrong
         public void changeCodeString2()
              a.setCode( "It's all good" ); // replaces OK as the message, for a and b Yay!!
              // now a and b have (still) the same code values, right
    }The getter/setter is necessary because we aren't using primitives in ResultCode, we have a shared reference through a and b that references a reference, and because we want operations through either a or b on a shared ResultCode object to be visible to both "copies" of the object (they aren't copies, its the same object, two referents).
    Its a little complicated, but suffice it say that the jist of the article is to keep it simple unless you are really certain that you need the complexity.
    Andrew

    An object with just behaviour doesn't do much, in the
    case of an object with static methods that modifies
    data passed in via arguments (which, incidentally,
    seems to be the model you are suggesting), the object
    itself is simply a utility grouping and doesn't have
    any state to behave with.
    As I said an OO Object must have data and behavior.
    If it doesn't have data it is not an Object. That is not to say that you can not create code that does that, but rather that it is not an OO Object.
    Most objects have at least two kinds of values,
    internal values that don't compose the behaviour of
    the object, things like loop counters, computation
    constants, or intermediate values; not really data is
    it? There are also values that do compose state, alter
    behaviour, or provide information; things like number
    of logins, name of a data file, etc...Local variables are not Object data. Via the implementation code a java class (for example) might have member variables that are used to achieve some implementation goal yet are not actually part of the Object.
    >
    Then there is the actually interesting stuff, the
    raison d'etre of the object, values that represent the
    output of the object and, actually deserve to be
    called data: total monthly bill, number of available
    routes, installed packages, or whatever.
    Let's say we have three kinds of values; temporary,
    intermediate, and product or, perhaps, transient,
    volatile, and final. It should be pretty clear that
    any client or co-programmer shouldn't be concerned
    with temporary or intermediate data and that it
    shouldn't be exposed, however, it should also be
    pretty clear that the resultant data, or product of an
    object, should be (in fact, as I have been arguing)
    must be exposed, why else have the object in the first
    place?As I already said if most of the classes in the system expose their data then something is wrong with the design.
    DTOs are an excellent example of classes that expose all of their data. Yet in the total system, a single DTO can normally be expected to have 4 or more classes for each DTO. And those classes do not expose their data.
    >
    My arguments also come out against under-exposing the
    intermediate values in an object, certainly within a
    package, exposing data to related co-objects is
    probably not much of a fault, except where it concerns
    someone who says, "Hey, those values in Class Z could
    be modified by Class B!"
    Exposing data is always dangerous for two reasons.
    1. The original developer might not have know what they were doing and thus instead of creating an Object they created something else (like half an Object, or two Objects in one, etc.)
    2. The maintainance programmer might not understand the original design. Exposed data allows them to avoid this lack of knowledge. Thus instead of figuring out that the intent of the design or figuring out that the design must be refactored (after understanding it the first place) they use a kludge that the exposed data allows for.
    Of course, the proper response is, "Hey!! Don't modify
    intermediate values in class Z from Class B!!",
    problem solved. No patterns, programming paradigms, or
    rules of practice (which generally come out as do this
    or perish!) necessary. It is simpler, and because of
    that I would argue that it is faster, less prone to
    error, and more enjoyable for the programmer to work
    with as a result.
    If everyone was a perfect programmer there would be no problems.
    Since they are not, one must use what is available and what is practical to prevent those problems that are likely to occur.
    And given that the intent of most programmers is tomake money with their code (or expose it via the
    public domain) all of those people should learn how to
    write code in terms of other people.
    So exposing data is wrong for most of the people here.Clearly not true just because you said so.
    No not true because you disagree.
    Hard to tell what you are disagreeing with here though. That most developers want to make money and/or acclaim for their work?
    >
    >
    Nothing I have seen so far is even close tosuggesting that your hypothesis is correct. And there
    is at least indirect evidence that it is incorrect.
    This was a rebuttal to your original point that stated
    that 90% of development time was spent refactoring and
    bug-chasing, which I agreed with and pointed out that
    reducing code size and complexity by avoiding
    unnecessary code (designed to avoid data-exposure or
    designed for policy-adherence) would reduce the number
    of hours represented by "90%" by a corresponding
    amount.Again that is a hypothesis of yours. And current known scientific studies do not seem to support it.
    >
    You say there is indirect evidence arguing against??
    Yes. Goto's can make code more dense and yet harder to understand and maintain. Because of that gotos are no longer used. Your hypothesis would suggest that gotos should be a good thing in the language (because the code is shorter.)
    >
    That is non-sensical in terms of this discussion.
    An Object in terms of OO has 'data' and 'behavior'.The 'data' should be 'encapsulated' and 'hidden' by
    the Object.
    See the top of this post. Hiding your data is like
    saying we have your bill, we know what your monthly
    statement is but we can't tell you and so we sent you
    that blank one...
    Part of the problem is that a class tends to have many
    different types of "data". A local, temporary loop
    counter would be really difficult to work with if it
    was exposed and modified from outside the scope of an
    object.
    Again let me point out that your response is non-sensical.
    A local member variable is not data for the Object.

  • How to add more than one clip to a drop zone?  New guy

    Hey all, I'm new to DVD studio and I'm trying to fiqure out how to add more than one clip to a Template drop zone. I'm using a 6 button template. I've named each button .. Football, Baseball, Hockey ...etc.
    How can put in MORE THAN ONE CLIP in the Football track/drop zone. So when someone clicks on Football they can see 3 examples.
    Do I need to create something to link to that Football button?
    Any replies appreciated

    You can edit the segments to be used in FCP or Motion so that the asset drop in has three examples
    Another way (if you want) is to make the entire menu outside of DVD SP so that the background layer is an m2v and the items are revealed/masked to some degree
    Take a look towards the bottom of this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2951183&#2951183 where I discuss http://www.dvdstepbystep.com/Overmovies.zip
    Note that you can also use a basic overlay to do this. The overlay would be just solid black instead of the arrows/circles things I use in that example.
    For instance make the text one color and the box over the movie another (You can make it blue and the box red lets say) Draw a region over both for the button. Map blue for highlights/transparencies for normall/selected/activated and the same for the Box

  • A new guy needs your advice

    Hi people,
    I am a new here and just recently decided to start learning SAP - particularily ABAP programming. I am coming from C++ background myself. I 've been told that the best point to start is to get "ABAP Objects" book which will help me up and also comes with mini SAP on CD.
    Now reading some general stuff on SAP, I understand that some new version of SAP has been recently introduced, something called NetWeather. So, my question is, do I have to start with traditional R/3 system via "ABAP Objects" book or move straight to new version NetWeather ?
    Thanks for your help.

  • A few 8100 questions from a new guy.

    I just purchased a used 8100, and have a couple of questions.
    Is there anyway I lock just the message application, instead of the whole phone?
    Also, when I tried to set up my E-mail it said that there was already a different account for this pin number. What can I do to reset that and set up my own?

    In BlackBerry there is no option to separately lock one single application. You can think of any 3rd party apps for this.
    As you purchased an used device you need to collect the user name and password for Email setting apps from the original owner. Your carrier might not help you as this will violate the original user  rights. If the original owner forgets the password as well then ask him to call his carrier and identify himself and make it unlocked for you.

  • New guy! Recently purchased CS5 web premium,

    Hi All,
    I recently purchased CS5 web premium, I realize that I need to learn about ALL the programs, Is there an order that I should learn in? Is it better to start with Photoshop or Flash? Dreamweaver or Illustrator?
    Also, I noticed that there are 3 Flash programs, Flash Professional, Flash Catalyst, Flash Builder 4. Are these used together or standalone? is there a correct order to learn these applications?
    Can't wait to learn but don't know where to start!!! Appreciate all help!!
    Thanks!

    Well, what is it that you actually want to do? I really suggest you watch at least some overviews and basic tutorials. You seem mightily confused as to what each program is actualyl used for and ultimately that in combination with your needs will dictate learning priorities.
    Flash Professional, Flash Catalyst, Flash Builder 4. Are these used together or standalone?
    FC is something completely different than the "real" Flash and a simplified tool to produce animations and presentations without programming. Flash Pro is the "standard" Flash, part graphical animation, part programming. FB (formerly Flex) is the geek version of Flash which mostly focuses on programming for server-side stuff on large websites with dynamically generated Flash content.

  • Brand new Mac customer-should I get Lion?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm writing because I'm looking for support.  I just recently bought my first iMac (it was between this or a Mini) after having my 4th PC die on me in 10 years.  While I already have the machine ordered I have been doing extensive research on what to expect with my purchase and one of the things I have been reading has been some compatability issues with Lion OS.  After having gone through several Windows upgrades myself I am nervous to be jumping into a new format all together only to find that Apple is going through an update to their OS (perfect timing I suppose).  That being said:
    I apparently am eligible for the FREE upgrade to Lion with my iMac purchase.  Should I get it or stay with Snow Leopard?
    I have the newest iMac out there that is the base model but includes 4GB of RAM and AMD 6750M graphics card.
    I'm also considering the newest generation Time Capsule (2TB).  Will that work okay with Lion as well?
    Also, last question, since I haven't received the Mac yet I want to make sure I got an okay model.  I was trying to pick what appeared to be middle of the road between a Mac Mini and the iMac line.  I'm not expecting to get it until tomorrow but am sure I can trade an unopened computer if  that's best.  Because I had a 23 inch monitor and keyboard/mouse with my former PC I had a hard time choosing.
    Thanks for answering any or all of my questions.  Sorry if this message has the new guy feel.

    Almost certainly if you purchased your iMac directly from Apple it will come with Lion on it already so you won't need to upgrade.
    Time Capsule will work fine with Lion.
    If you bought directly from Apple you have 14 days to return the computer, so if you are not happy for any reason they will refund your money. At that point you can decide if you want a different model or not.
    I'm sure your experience will be a good one so don't worry. Reading in these forums sometimes can jade a new user, however please remember these are technical help forums that people come to when they're having issues and are not representative of the general population.

  • No DVD drive in new iMac ???

    So I have just completely upgraded my 15 years of home movies on DVD over the last year.
    I converted video, old DVDs and used imovie to make great copies for all the family.
    I just learned that if I get a new imac from Dec 2012, they have no DVD drive ?
    What ?
    If its true, then I need to buy into some device that can play and burn them for the next years.
    Yep, Apple have a vision, but I cannot see it and I am 50.
    In 180 months , when I am 65, I wont care about the visons of Apple.
    But i will care about the memories on the discs and as Apple dont let on why they restrict the continuation or stop the use or anyone else using aformat that quite honestly is massively serviceable today and will be for some years.
    Glad I dint chucj out the old dell and also, I will going fire her up to play my movies and memories. Steve Jobs is pictured on some of those DVDs, guess the new guys wanted to move on pretty fast from that era too !
    Hmmm, now where is the off button, I need to do some exercise and get real again !
    see ya

    My girlfriend told me the new iMacs came out today.. and she told they were really thin and being the apple ***** that I am I immediately started thinking about getting rid of my iMac 2010 27 inch quad core.. nothing wrong with it but I love the thinness of the new one.
    Then I saw this.. no DVD drive? R u serious? On a home computer?
    I can give my perspective on what that means for me.
    It means that all the DVDs of old shows I have been buying and watching in the kitchen with dinner, I wont be able to watch anymore. I can get all these DVDs at my local store, for much much cheaper.
    Im not a tight wad, I have an iPhone 5, Macbook Retina 15, iPad 3, Apple TV, iPod etc.. I love Apple but cmon guys..
    I cant pay $250 eveytime I want to watch a 10 year old series.. when I can buy a hard copy for $60.
    Especially when the digital copy you can only watch on your mac or Apple tv, and the other you can watch on everything - without using your precious and expensive internet bandwidth. I thought going digital, and having more limited playing devices, meant cheaper product costs for us, since we are footing the bill for everything required to play.
    Sorry, but I have just paid nearly $240 to watch "Curb Your Enthusiasm" on Apple.. and its great.. but I could have bought it for a 3rd of that price.. and then given it to someone when finished.
    This might seem irrelevant to the discussion, but its a very real aspect of what the new iMac is saying to me.
    Sorry Apple, but I upgrade nearly every 1-3 years all my different Apple products (Phone every year, macs every 2-3 years) but you cant tell me to kill off DVDs so i can buy all the digital content, which is so limited, and 3 times the price.
    Actually I was up when the iPad got announced first.. I just bought my iPad 3 in July.. And I see today they released one, already twice as powerful, and real 4G on it! Not impressed the iPad 3 only came out in May didnt it? And we were told it was 4G!
    I am NOT one of those people that complain when a new model comes out, I understand and appreciate this. Its technology it moves on or it doesnt sell. I had my iMac 2010 and didnt blink when 2011, 12 etc came out.
    I had my iPad 2 and didnt care when iPad 2 or 3 came out.. fair calls.. Same when I had my old MBP, or Macbook and they got updated after time.. again this is completely reasonable in my eyes at least.
    But this move today.. I dont know.. a bit too strong for my liking, and a bit too soon as well.. Hopefully its not a new direction cause quick updates will kill the resale market which is why so many of us are able to upgrade all the time also..
    what do you guys think?

  • New to VERIZON but doesn't feel right!

    Hey guys...
    IM A new Guy.
    New to VERIZON but doesn't feel right! Although the 1st Gen Droid is truly awesome, it was the rival of the phone I sported way back when the G1 was the current bad boy on the block the NexusOne. I HAD NO OTHER ANDROID devices in stock! SO I selected the Droid. But I desire a DROID X. YES I AM OBSESSED. ...SEARCHING for one...I guess ill have to wait iltill I'm eligible for upgrade. I was thinking I had 30 days to exchange and as soon as they are in swap...but I can't if I have talked more than 30-50min....so that's out.
    If anyone has any suggestions please let me knew thanks

    What is this...a new rule?  Where did you get this from?  The only restriction on the 30 days is one exchange, as has been previously stated.  As far as I know there is no restriction on the calling minutes used....is there?
