New Hard Disk/Space Gone

Hi Everyone,
I just got a new Intel Core Dual and loaded just a few apps and used it all week end and everything was Fantastic. Today however, I went to use it and now all of a sudden almost all my space on my Hard Drive is gone. I am down to 14 gigs. Where did it all go? How do I go about correcting this problem? I tried Disk Utility/Repair but no luck. Please tell me I don't have to reinstall system softwear after only a couple of days use and after getting it all set up. Didn't even have time to do a back up yet.

I don't know much about the 250 since I don't have it. I'd contact Elgato to find out if there are any differences between it and the 200. Their support is very responsive. The EyeTV works really well with my iMac G5 1.8 Ghz and Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz. Be sure to purchase Toast 6.1.1 or later, as that usually doesn't come with it. It is a very good overall unit, mind you though even though all the encoding is done on the unit, if you attempt to multitask while it encodes, you might get jumpiness on the video recording itself. So I tend to record at night or when I can use another computer. Use the Firewire cable that comes with it, if it is a Firewire based unit, as other Firewire cables may not transmit the signal properly.
It sometimes does confuse Composite video for S-Video and vice versa when selecting S-Video as a single input. I don't know why it does that. However, the Tuner end is the end that works best hooked up to a VCR with a standard coax cable. Converted 150 VHS tapes with it and it works great
Also you might want to partition the hard drive so that one is used exclusively for capturing EyeTV's video. When done with the capture, just erase the partition. Note, partitioning works best if you wipe the hard drive, so learn about backing up according to my FAQ:

  • New hard disk not detected when plugged into SUN FIRE X4150

    Hi
We have a server currently set up as RAID-1. There's a need to have additional space for operational needs so an additional 300GB hard disk was acquired and need not be in RAID-1 setup. It was plugged into the server and the server seems to hang i.e. remote sessions terminated, cannot be ping.
Server was powered down, and after removing the hard disk, powered up. Everything is ok again.
We then powered down the server, plugged in the hard disk, and powered it up. Server boot up into the OS ok but the new hard disk did not get detected.
    My questions are:-
    1. Is it possible to add a 3rd hard disk in a RAID-1 server?
    2. If yes, what are we doing wrong or missed?
    3. If it not possible, does it mean in a RAID-1 setup, any additional hard disk to be added MUST also be RAID-1 configured?

    Hi.
This server can be ordered with LSI RAID controller or with Adaptec RAID controller.
They are required different steps for configure disks.
Adaptec RAID controller require first create volume at BIOS level RAID configuration menu.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.

  • Trying to install OS X 10.3 on a new hard disk.

I inserted a new hard drive into my iMac, as I knew that I needed more hard disk space for Panther then the 6 GB that I had with 9.2.2 (not for the install, which only requires 2 GB, but for general use).
I zeroed it and formatted it with Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but when I continued with installation it said, "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. You cannot start up your computer using this volume." when I tried to select a volume for installation.
Although I don't want to install until I have checked the firmware is updated (using the old hard drive and OS 9.2.2), I obviously don't want these problems when I try to install in a month or so.
Hard disk is Maxtor 6E040L0, 38.3 GB.
I have looked at Solution: mac os x cannot start up from this volume (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=2265801&#2265801), but the info says that the drive does have Applepartitionscheme. I will try it with the opposing scheme, if possible, but I assume that won't work.

To install Panther, you need the retail install version CDs (black with silver X). I suspect you are trying to use a model specific version or upgrade version (gray), that won't work.
When you formatted the new drive, did you check to install the OS 9 drivers? The drivers need to be installed if you want to be able to boot OS 9.x. If you just want to be able to run in classic mode, the drivers are not necessary.
If OS X has never been installed on your Mac, you need to check if your Mac requires a firmware (Boot ROM version in System Profiler) update. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 If an update is required, the update must be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X.

I am running iTunes on an IBM compatible system running Windows XP with a relatively small hard disk (70gb). I have 4 kids with 4 IPOD Touches, multiple IPOD Nanos, etc. Their apps and album art are eating up the hard disk space. I changed the Media Folder through Edit, Prferences, Advances, iTunes Media Folder to an external hard disk. The new music downloads and purchases go there but the apps and other items do not. How do I get the apps and other iTunes software and downloads to go to the external hard disk

There is no built in function to make this happen.
    Your options are:
    Upgrade the existing hard drive.
Try creating a link for the app folder on the external drive... this may or may not work.
Realistically, a larger hard drive is a better solution, then use the external drive for keeping a backup of the ENTIRE iTunes folder and any other personal data on the system.

  • In PSE will I use more hard-disk space by using iPhoto plus Organizer for photos?

I have PSE 10 on my MAC. I normally download my photos onto iPhoto (and a while ago, onto Bridge CS3 which came with an earlier version of PSE) but more recently have become interested in using the PSE Organizer for my photo library.  I have started to transfer/copy the photos from iPhoto but, having read various topics on organizing photos, am a little worried that by having the photos in 2/3 places on the MAC I will use much more hard-disk space.  I know that the original files for iPhoto are in the 'Library' so that I just see thumbnails on iPhoto ( I may be wrong here?), but will the photos I now have on Organizer be working off those same 'Library' originals or am I doubling up on the space required to store these photos?

For information my iPhoto is v 9.5.1 and would seem not to like .dng files so won't load them (I am using the Adobe RAW to DNG 8.3 Converter at the moment mainly because I would have to upgrade to PSE12 to get the RAW plug-in to process my Lumix G-6 RAW files, which is fairly expensive and, even then, my iPhoto would still be the same version unless I upgraded that as well!).
I can load the RAW files onto iPhoto but when I then send them to PSE or iPhoto itself for editing they seem to be automatically converted to .jpg and do not have the usual RAW editing selection palette. However, the PSE Organizer seems happy to accept the .dng files (but not the RAW files) and when sent to PSE for editing I do get the RAW type palette, so it looks like storing my .dng files in Organizer is a good idea and, therfore, I might as well store other photos there as well rather than run two different organizers - I will leave the photos in Bridge as they are.
If you are talking about photos not in iphoto, this is correct. If you use "from iPhoto" you will get automatic duplicates of the originals in a new location. If you export them manually and use from files and folders, yes, the organizer just makes a thumbnail.
This paragraph made me think!  I'm pretty sure that when I decided to transfer my photos from iPhoto into PSE Organizer I used "from iPhoto" as this seemed the easiest way.  Does this mean that I have duplicated the file size of my iPhoto library and am therefore using much more hard-disc space than if I had used "from files and folders" (getting just thumbnails)? The transfer seems to have pulled in a lot of folders! If this is the case, is there any way to go back and do it again but "from files and folders" next time?!
This is all rather complicated it would seem (or I'm making it that way!) and I really appreciate your help.

  • 'private' hard disk space

This question is mainly due to curiosity. The hard disk space on my MacBook is nearly full and I am trying to empty it. I have used Disk Inventory, as suggested on a discussion here, and have found 4Gb of something called 'private.' I assume this is something to do with the workings of the MacBook and I shouldn't touch it, if I could find where it was anyway. Am I correct?

    Hello Tim,
You don't say what size your Hard Drive is. If it is getting to small, you might want to install a larger one. In the MacBook it is VERY easy. I just replaced mine with a Seagate Momentus 7200.3 ST9320421AS 320GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive for only $90. I put the old hard drive in to a Nippon Labs USB-25SATA-BK 2.5" Black USB 2.0 External Enclosure for $11, so I can use it as a spare Hard Dive later. I then used Carbon Copy Cloner to transfer 100% of my old Hard Drive to the new Hard Drive.
Best thing I ever did for this MacBook.

  • Add new hard disk

    Hello everyone!
Our server is running out storage space, so we are planning to install new hard disks. Please let us know how to set up
    Thank you

For what we are going to do is that we try to run the client export with t-code SCC8, since the system respond Runtime Errors

  • Ziplight.mdimport/hard disk space loss?

I started noticing some major loss of hard disk space of late and this seems much worse after updating to 10.4.7 and installing the new iLife and iWork '06 packages. During installation of these sizable packages, it's to be expected; but after some monkeying around and restarting, I had over 5 GB. But now I find I'm hovering around 1 GB with nothing new added -- even after restarts.
    Is anyone else experiencing this?
Using Disk Inventory X, I also see that something called Ziplight.mdimport is taking up 4 GB, and I have no idea what this is. Anyone there know?

Ziplight.mdimport is a plug-in that allows spotlight to search within and index the contents of zip files. This is third party. Any idea who installed it?
You may try to re-index your drive via terminal:
    sudo mdutil -E /
Press return, key in your password and press return again. This will delete the index of your boot volume and recreate it. If you still have space problems you may have to get rid of Ziplight.

  • Confused about hard disk space

ok, I am new to Apple and not a computer person per say, so I am very confused when all of a sudden my new computer is now telling me I do not have enough space on my hard disk to download things. I have downloaded pictures and videos but have never had this problem with my old pc and I have more disk space on my apple. am I doing something wrong?
and, I tried to move some of my photos that I downloaded onto a disk to free up some space but it's not letting me move the originals. I'm getting super frustrated -- HELP!

Agreed, jtandi, we would be happy to help.
Have you checked your system profile to see how much hard disk space you have available? If not, follow these steps and let us know what you find.
    - Click the Apple Logo in the top left of your menu bar
    - Click More Info
    - Your MBP displays a summary screen, Click "More Info"
    - Your MBP displays a more detailed information tree. Click "Serial-ATA" under Hardware
    - your MBP displays information on your hard disk. Look towards the bottom of the display. You will see the name of your hard drive. If you have not renamed your computer, it will be Macintosh HD. Below the name will be your hard drive's "Capacity" and "Available" in GB's. Let us know what these two readings are

  • Disappearing Hard Disk Space

For several days, I have watched my available hard disk space "disappear" before my eyes. I should have approximately 13 GB of free space available, but this number has gradually dropped to zero and then back up to 6 GB and currently hovers around 2-3 GB. This has happened over the last 3-4 days. I don't recall installing any new software, drivers, etc. A virus scan detected no viruses. Disk Utility detected no problems. System Profiler logs don't seem to show any processes that are unusually large and consuming. Where did my hard drive space go and how can I get it back?

  • Kernel panic after new hard disk

Because my macbook is very old (early 206 model) and has not many free space left I decided to put some more RAM in it and a new hard disk. First I installed the RAM and that worked fine, so I did a full copy of my old hard disk to my new one, using disk utility. However, after putting my new disk into my macbook I fired it up but it gave me a message that I should restart my computer. On the background I saw that it was about a kernel panic. I don't know what to do because I can't reinstall OS X because my SuperDrive doesn't work.
    Does anyone knows the answer?
    -Sander

First, are you saying you cannot boot the computer from your external clone? If so, then your clone is unusable so you will need to use the OS X installer DVD to install OS X on the new drive.
If you cloned your old system to the new drive and cannot boot, then you may not have prepped the new drive properly as follows. This assumes you have booted from the external clone:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Once formatting has complete you can restore your clone:
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the new internal drive.
Source means the external clone drive.
