New hard disk WD Black 750Gb won't install under OSX 10.4

Hi,
I just bought and installed a WD Black WD7500BPKX 750 GB (7200 rpm)  into my MacBook (mid 2007).
The physical installation was succesful.
I then started Disk Utility from the OSX Disc (10.4). The hard disk shows up under the name 'Media'. I clicked it, and chose to partition/format it (GUID - HFS+), only 1 partition was an option, but that is ok for me.
When I clicked 'partition' I got the error message: partitioning failed - no permissions.
The question is: how can I manage permissions on a disk that is not yet mounted?
How can I mount the new disk?
Thanks a lot in advance for your help.
Cheers

As Rich said, it does sound the same as when a firmware update is needed, however, you mentioned that the PB had been running Jag before . . . if it does turn out to be firmware, great. If not, another thought is RAM. If there are two RAM modules (256MB or 512), try removing one at a time and then retry the installation. Marginal RAM which seems to work fine in normal operations can manifest issues during installation.
Which TiBook is this btw? Sounds like the original 400 or 500MHz?

You don't want to install the software that came with the drive, you don't need it and it will be problematic. Connect the new drive, open Disk Utility, select the new drive and partition it using the GUID partition scheme, then format it as Mac OS extended journaled and it will be easy to use with your Mac.

  • Recurring Hard Disk Error - New Hard Disk

I've been in contact with HP about a recurring problem with my Pavillion g6 - it periodically has blue screen errors and then won't turn on, displaying a "hard disk error". It then refuses to boot up for anywhere between a few minutes to a few days. I sent it in for a repair, it came back with a new display bezel (???). More hard disk errors. I called in and they shipped out a new hard drive for me.
Today I installed the new hard drive. When I tried to boot it up for the first time, I was greeted with yet another hard disk error. I ran a test, it claimed that the hard disk was fine (it used to say that before sometimes too, which is probably why they didn't replace it initially). Powered down, and turned it on again - it started up fine.
Now it is working, but I don't feel any better about it since it had that initial error. Is it normal for a new hard disk to fail right after being hooked up? It was obviously installed fine, as I am typing this post on a fully functioning laptop now. I am tired of living out of a portable drive (it is a lot like living out of a suitcase), so I would appreciate some assurance that the laptop isn't just going to crash again, but it seems to me that the new hard disk isn't going to be my solution.
I have an extended warranty - but I don't have the luxury of time when it comes to mailing it in, as I am a full-time student and use online courseware every day.
    This question was solved.

It is obviously not normal to get an error on a new hard drive. Equally obviously, it is not the drive itself. I wish I could calm your fears but I suspect you have some sort of an intermittent connectivity problem with the SATA port on the motherboard. All you can do is keep using it and see if the problem comes back. I might go in and triple check all the screws and connections, but that is just OCD, really.

  • Replacing tunes in iTunes in computer with new hard disk

I recently had to replace my hard disk. I have authorized my computer (same as old one, but with new hard disk). Can't unauthorize the previous one. But want to transfer the music (from my CDs) currently on my iPod to iTunes on my computer. Having problems doing this. Any way to do so? Thanks.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
iPod Music Liberator Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Satellite L300 - New hard disk drive info needed

I own a Satellite L300 and have to replace the hard disk drive. I am in Korea and went to the service center, but they only couldn't replace the disk drive because they only had them in Korean, so I have to go elsewhere to get one in English (that's what I think I was told anyway) I don't know a whole lot about computers, so I am looking for some help.
When I bought my computer it came with Vista pre installed, therefore I don't have an installation disk or anything like that. Because I am getting a new hard disk drive, will I also need to buy Vista and install it myself?

    Hello my friend
I am a little bit confused after reading your posting. HDD replacement is so simply and can be done by everyone and I don't understand how the service couldnt be able to do this. for this action you need 10 minutes and can be done without manuals or some maintenance manuals.
If you want to do this alone, please follow these steps:
    - turn notebook upside down
    - remove the battery
    - near the battery you will see HDD cover fixed with two screws
    - remove the screws and HDD cover
    - remove the HDD pack by pulling on the tab attached to the pack, following the direction of the arrows
    - place the HDD pack on a flat surface (such as a desk), and remove the two black flat head screws with black head screws
Please be careful with HDDs and do not apply pressure to the top or bottom of the drive.
    Vista OS
New Toshiba notebooks are delivered without installations disc but recovery image is saved on HDD. When you start notebook for the first time you will see Toshiba reminder with info that you must create such disc alone using preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator. if you didn't create it and now the HDD is defective you have a problem. Either you must order new recovery media from Toshiba or you can use Microsoft installations disc to install Vista.
If Ive forgot something please let me know.

  • NEED HELP, old hard disk failed, new hard disk not detected.

My hard disk died, not working, not detected when I restart with the MacOS X DVD and attempt to reinstall.
I have bought a new hard drive, 160 GB ATA - IDE Samsung drive, and carefully replaced it following service manual instructions. All connectors have been carfully but firmly reconnected, and the new hard disk is not detected.
What can i do?? where is the problem??
Thank you very much for your help.

Do you know that the new hard drive is working? As it's new chances are it is, just asking .... do you know it's powering up? If you replug the old not working hard drive in, is it recognized? (this is where you don't put the computer back together, but just replace the hard drive and sort of close it back up, but don't use any bolts close the case). Plus you can feel or clearly hear if the drive is starting up or not.

  • New hard disk not detected on openboot

    hello guys,
would like to request help if there are any settings i need to enable for a netra t1 to detect the new hard disks that were added on a dell disk array. the netra t1 is able to detect scsi hds 1-3 but not the 8-11. have checked netra t1 manual and it says that it supports both narrow and wide scsi. probe scsi only shows the following disks:
    /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/scsi@2
    Target 0
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318404LSUN18G 8590

    Target 2
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
    Target 3
    Unit 0 Disk SEAGATE ST318406LC 8A03
the new disks are of the same model. any help is greatly appreciated.

This is an incomplete output of probe-scsi. Which of these disks are internal (maybe only ID 0?) ?
Set auto-boot? to FALSE at the ok-prompt. Temporarily insert one of the new disks in the slot of one of the detected disks (e.g. ID3). Is the disk now detected at the OBP ? If it is, there is something wrong with the external chassis.
I assumed that this is a Netra T1 AC200/DC200 with only a single channel SCSI controller.

  • New hard disk not detected when plugged into SUN FIRE X4150

    Hi
We have a server currently set up as RAID-1. There's a need to have additional space for operational needs so an additional 300GB hard disk was acquired and need not be in RAID-1 setup. It was plugged into the server and the server seems to hang i.e. remote sessions terminated, cannot be ping.
Server was powered down, and after removing the hard disk, powered up. Everything is ok again.
We then powered down the server, plugged in the hard disk, and powered it up. Server boot up into the OS ok but the new hard disk did not get detected.
    My questions are:-
    1. Is it possible to add a 3rd hard disk in a RAID-1 server?
    2. If yes, what are we doing wrong or missed?
    3. If it not possible, does it mean in a RAID-1 setup, any additional hard disk to be added MUST also be RAID-1 configured?

    Hi.
This server can be ordered with LSI RAID controller or with Adaptec RAID controller.
They are required different steps for configure disks.
Adaptec RAID controller require first create volume at BIOS level RAID configuration menu.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;

  • New hard disk on old imac - best way to transfer back-up from Time Machine??

    Hello,
The hard disk on my 2008 iMac died and I just got my computer back from the repair guy, who installed a new hard disk (and the latest Yosemite).
Which is the best (and most fail-proof) way for me to transfer all the stuff from the old hard disk -  which is on my Time Machine – to the new one?
Before getting repaired, my iMac was running on Mavericks. My Internet access has also changed (it broke down the same week… ). Don't know it that makes a difference.

Connect your backup drive to the computer. Because you had Mavericks installed before you can only restore your Home folder from the backup. Use Migration Assistant in the Utilities folder to transfer your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences. Upon completion you will have two user accounts. The one you are now using and the migrated one. Log out of the account you are using then log into the migrated account. Open Users & Groups preferences, click on the lock icon and enter your admin password for the migrated account. Select the account you were using and click on the Delete [-] button. Select the option to delete immediately.

The new HD is a WD My Passport Edge 500 GB capacity
5 hours to do 6 GB of transfer is NOT normal, even for USB 2.0 so there's something wrong here. I'd say cancel it, wipe the drive and then test the integrity of the drive. Do some file transfers over to and see if it's behaving normally. It could be a bad USB cable, it could be a bad drive or bad enclosure. As it's new, I suspect you haven't really put it through its paces yet and it's important to do that first before commissioning it to serve as your "reliable backup."

  • How to restore my Ipod touch into a new hard disk/computer?

Guys, my Laptop's hard drive was crash and all my songs and applications were the only copy I had. However, I had no idea how to restore my musics and application back to the library after I had replace a new hard disk. I went through online to check out some solutions but basically they required a software to retrieve those music and they cost money. I don't think I deserve this since I had spent $70 to get a new hard disk. The worst was mostly they only able to restore musics and videos. I don't think they're able to restore the applications, please give me some advises. Thanks

You should always maintain a backup. If you fail to do this you are asking to lose your data.
    You can transfer itunes purchases:
    File>Transfer Purchases
Unlike music and videos, you can re-download apps:

  • Where could I buy a new hard disk for my macbook pro 15''(MB986CH/A)

Does anyone know where I could buy a new hard disk for my macbook pro 15''(MB986CH/A) (mid 2009)? The hard drives sold in Apple Store are not for macbook pro... Thanks a lot!

At one time Apple use to put an Apple firmware on the drives installed into Mac computer. That is not the case anymore. And even if they did that firmware was just to indentify the drive as an Apple drive. Those same drives would work in any computer and any drive would work in a Mac computer. Same is true today. There are NO Apple Mac drives. Apple uses the exact same drives as any other computer.
Apple uses the exact same hardware as all other computers. Same CPU, GPU, RAM, Drives, DVD drives you name it, it is the same as any PC.
Good Luck but just because you go to a Mac-centric store doesn't mean it is any different then what you would buy some place else, other then it may cost more from one of those Mac-centric places.
