New Hard Disk won't work

G4 12" powerbook original hard disk died.
Replaced with 160GB seagate momentus 5400.3 and it seems to be working ie. disc starts up is recognised by G3 iMac when connected as a firewire drive (start up + T key). Have used disk utility to format it and to mount OS from powerbook DVD but does not work.
Hardware disc checker says cannot access memory SRR1 & SRR0 with some numbers.
Is there a driver I need? If so where? or what else can I do?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
Sounds like incompatible memory... but go here and check out the information on how to do a Hardware Test. Might come up with some answers: http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/aht.html

  • My USB external hard disk won't work anymore after I updated to 10.4.10

As I said in title since it's quite urgent to me. ALL of my files is in my external hard drive. It's format as FAT or FAT32 I can't remember since I use it between mac and PC. More than that IT IS WORKING FINE UNDER PC. Before updating to Mac 10.4.10 I used my hard disk fine till I updated to this version. I plug in my usb port and after a hours it still won't be detected. I can find my hard disk in finder or desktop. I have tried plug my hard disk to other MacBook or Mac Pro but still won't work anymore. However it's working fine under PC or when I started my MacBKPRO as WindowsXP under bootcamp, my hard disk is working fine, too.
I have search this forum and seems someone have got the same problem as I face. I don't know what to do...and I feel so disappointed to Mac.

As Mac OS X has no known viruses in the wild, that leaves you with one of three possibilities.
    1. When connected to the Windows machine, a virus has written over a critical boot block area which allows the drive to become crossplatform. Get the latest Windows virus detection software and make sure the drive is clean of Windows viruses.
    2. The firmware that allows it to communicate driverless has become corrupted on the drive case. Replacing the drive case itself will eliminate that problem, as suggested earlier.
    3. The directory damage is just enough that the boot block itself is damaged. Backup any critical data from the drive onto the Windows machine first, and run Alsoft Disk Warrior 4.0 to repair the directory and see if that works.
The fact that Mac OS X 10.3.9 won't read it basically eliminates this as a 10.4.10 problem. Only a boot block or firmware issue like this could make a drive not readable on one platform, but readable on another.
P.S. please note the nomenclature of Mac, versus MAC on this user tip, as it appears you haven't learned it:

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and

  • Recurring Hard Disk Error - New Hard Disk

I've been in contact with HP about a recurring problem with my Pavillion g6 - it periodically has blue screen errors and then won't turn on, displaying a "hard disk error". It then refuses to boot up for anywhere between a few minutes to a few days. I sent it in for a repair, it came back with a new display bezel (???). More hard disk errors. I called in and they shipped out a new hard drive for me.
Today I installed the new hard drive. When I tried to boot it up for the first time, I was greeted with yet another hard disk error. I ran a test, it claimed that the hard disk was fine (it used to say that before sometimes too, which is probably why they didn't replace it initially). Powered down, and turned it on again - it started up fine.
Now it is working, but I don't feel any better about it since it had that initial error. Is it normal for a new hard disk to fail right after being hooked up? It was obviously installed fine, as I am typing this post on a fully functioning laptop now. I am tired of living out of a portable drive (it is a lot like living out of a suitcase), so I would appreciate some assurance that the laptop isn't just going to crash again, but it seems to me that the new hard disk isn't going to be my solution.
I have an extended warranty - but I don't have the luxury of time when it comes to mailing it in, as I am a full-time student and use online courseware every day.
    This question was solved.

It is obviously not normal to get an error on a new hard drive. Equally obviously, it is not the drive itself. I wish I could calm your fears but I suspect you have some sort of an intermittent connectivity problem with the SATA port on the motherboard. All you can do is keep using it and see if the problem comes back. I might go in and triple check all the screws and connections, but that is just OCD, really.

  • NEED HELP, old hard disk failed, new hard disk not detected.

My hard disk died, not working, not detected when I restart with the MacOS X DVD and attempt to reinstall.
I have bought a new hard drive, 160 GB ATA - IDE Samsung drive, and carefully replaced it following service manual instructions. All connectors have been carfully but firmly reconnected, and the new hard disk is not detected.
What can i do?? where is the problem??
Thank you very much for your help.

Do you know that the new hard drive is working? As it's new chances are it is, just asking .... do you know it's powering up? If you replug the old not working hard drive in, is it recognized? (this is where you don't put the computer back together, but just replace the hard drive and sort of close it back up, but don't use any bolts close the case). Plus you can feel or clearly hear if the drive is starting up or not.

  • Where could I buy a new hard disk for my macbook pro 15''(MB986CH/A)

Does anyone know where I could buy a new hard disk for my macbook pro 15''(MB986CH/A) (mid 2009)? The hard drives sold in Apple Store are not for macbook pro... Thanks a lot!

At one time Apple use to put an Apple firmware on the drives installed into Mac computer. That is not the case anymore. And even if they did that firmware was just to indentify the drive as an Apple drive. Those same drives would work in any computer and any drive would work in a Mac computer. Same is true today. There are NO Apple Mac drives. Apple uses the exact same drives as any other computer.
Apple uses the exact same hardware as all other computers. Same CPU, GPU, RAM, Drives, DVD drives you name it, it is the same as any PC.
Good Luck but just because you go to a Mac-centric store doesn't mean it is any different then what you would buy some place else, other then it may cost more from one of those Mac-centric places.

  • New hard disk for HP Pavilion All-in-One MS228sc

I need to get af new hard disk drive for my HP Pavilion All-in-One MS228sc. I have great difficulties in getting in touch with HP denmark since my product is out of waranty.
My questions is if the PC can handle a disk larger than my current on on 500 GB. Further more I am not sure about other potential limits the PC could have ini regards to speed and other parameters on a new disk drive
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

As your computer is out of warranty, please purchase a 500GB - 2TB 3.5" SATA2 or 3 hard drive from an online or local retailer. If the new drive is an AF (Advanced Format) drive, you may have issues using the HP Recovery Media you created or purchased.
If this is the case and you can still read the 25-digit Windows product key on the Microsoft COA affixed to your computer, you can install Windows 7 using this key. Please see "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" for instructions on how to download Windows 7, create the installation media, and install Windows 7 using the 25-digit product key from the Microsoft COA on your computer. This method will not install any HP customizations or value-added software and you will have to manually install all needed drivers.
Links to Windows 7 SP1 can be found HERE and HERE. (Download the Windows 7)
Direct link to Windows 7 USB/DVD Download tool. (Use to create the media from the ISO)

  • Installing Lenovo Windows 7 upgrade in a new hard disk

I have an U330 and I have received Lenovo Windows 7 upgrade disc. My pre-installed OS is Windows Vista.
I bought a new 500 Gb hard disk and I want to change my U330's hd for this new one AND also want to install Windows 7 in this new hard disk.
Question: is is possible to install windows 7 using Lenovo Windows 7 upgrade discs directly in this new hard disk?
Or do I need first to change the hard disk (and restore backup or restore factory default) and then upgrade to Windows 7?
    Thanks in advance

I dont think it is possible, the upgrade disk will check for a eligible version of Windows vista before starting the installtion

  • System seems slower after new hard disk installation.

    Dear all:
After a recent hard disk crash that caused me to lose a lot of important professional and personal information I replaced my old defective hard disk (a Seagate Barracuda 1.0 TB internal SATA drive) with a new one (a Seagate Barracuda 1.5 TB internal SATA drive).
The issue I am now experiencing may or may not be related to the new drive but I wanted to post it here and have your opinions about it. It seems to me that since this new hard disk was installed that my system is slower than it was before. Something else I noticed is that iTunes seems to hang every once in a little while, freezing and a while later resuming its operation (as if it were frozen while trying to read the information from its library located on the new hard disk ???).
Since the capacity of the new disk has increased some 50% compared to the older one, could this be the issue ? Can the fact that the 1.5 TB hard disk are new technology be a reason why this is happening (some issues still not completely resolved) or could it be that the capacity being so much greater requires the drive to work harder at finding the data ?
In case the information is relevant the drive's speed is 7200 rpm but I couldn't find any information (including Seagate's own web site) about its seek time spec.
Something else I noticed is that since I've installed the two 1.5 TB internal drives the fans inside my G5 have become more noticeable, raising their speed to a noisy level every now and then depending on what I am doing with my computer. This didn't happened before when I had only one internal hard disk installed (my original purchase configuration) and when I had (2) internal 400 GB hard disks installed.
    Any ideas ?
    Thank you in advance.

Turns out I used screws that were too long above the optical drive which blocked it...

My newly installed burner works fine from i-tunes, except the burned disk won't work in my car CD player. The old burner's work just fine in the car. Please help.

Using my new G5 I have the same problem, which I did not know using my old G4 with an external LaCie burner. The CD-Changer in my car is not able to read audio-cds, also my cd-player in my home hifi-system. The only way to play these audio-cds is (strange...) to put them directly in the main tuner of my car (usually used for the navigation cd), not using the Changer.
Maybe the problem really depends on the quality of the CD-Rs. I have used CD-Rs from Sony (it´s a brand, I think?) and will try Verbatim.

  • Rebuilding a T42 with a new hard disk

    Hi folks, 1st post!
I have a T42 (Type 2373-WAS) that I bought from an asset management company a couple of years ago.  The original 40GB hard drive is dying so I have bought a larger one to replace it.
When I bought the machine it didn't come with any build CDs, but had the IBM Access stuff on it with a separate partition for restoring - obviously this isn't on the new hard disk.
What I would like is to have the same structure on the new hard disk - with all the IBM recovery stuff and the extra partition.  Is this possible?  If so, how?
I suspect what I will have to do is reinstall XP Pro from my other CD, use the serial from the Windows sticker on the bottom of the laptop (hopefully that will work), and download the hundreds of drivers from the lenovo website?  I don't really relish doing this, especially as I have read several accounts of people having issues with the wireless card driver...
What's the best solution to this?
Also - how can I find out *exactly* what the spec of my machine (2373-WAS) is?
    Thanks in advance!

If you want the recovery partition you would need the Recovery discs, which you can try to purchase through ebay or marketplace on forum.thinkpads.com (you should post a Want to Buy listing the item that you are interested in purchasing).
If that don't work then, you would need to install the aftermarket OS and install the drivers separately.
Your machine spec and all the relevant drivers can be found in the link below.

  • New hard disk after time machine restore doesn't boot, NEED HELP

    Hi,
I just bought a new hard disk for my computer and it works fine if you just install the OS X, but every time I do a restore from my time machine I received a screen after the boot that tells the following:
"You need to restart your computer, hold on the power button until it turns off, then press the power button again."
This message appears in many languages, I do the restart and the same message comes again every time.
I already tried the disk utility when I boot with the OS X DVD and says that the disk is ok. I also tried a PRAM reset.
The result is the same message.
Does any body knows what I am doing wrong or why is this happens?
    thanks for any help

This is a kernel panic. They are often, but not exclusively, hardware related. Some reading for you:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1392
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
If this only happens after a full restore from TM, that might suggest something you are copying back over is causing the problem. You may want to ask in the Snow Leopard TM forums about how to identify the culprit, or do a partial restore that might skip the system files likely to cause a panic:
