New Hard Drive and Fresh Install

I have a late 2006 iMac and I bought an internal 1TB hard drive today to upgrade it. I initially thought to clone my current internal drive to the new one, but I figured that doing a fresh install of Leopard would give better performance. I have a USB adapter for this new drive to connect it externally (temporarily).
My question is... What is the best way to copy my information if I do a fresh install on the new drive? I do have another external drive with a Time Machine backup and I know how to copy over my iTunes library to another computer (I did it with my MacBook) but how would I copy all my other information? The things most important to me are Mail with all my e-mails and accounts and iPhoto with all my pictures. I can copy all my other folders no problem. But like I said, what I'm concerned about most is my Mail and all my pictures. Would all the albums in iPhoto be kept? Basically, I would like to make the new drive as cloned as possible to the original one while doing a fresh install.

I also just purchased a 1TB Internal hard drive - Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm - and used Carbon Copy Cloner to clone my original hard drive (which is running Tiger). Everything seems to be normal, except the the long boot up process. The desktop appears, the dock appears, and then there is a long pause of 20 to 30 seconds before the drives mount and and the desktop folders appear. I have 10 gigs of RAM, I have rebuilt the Directory with Disk Warrior 4.1, and also repaired the disk permissions (although some of them state that they can't be repaired). When I reboot from my original 250 Gig hard drive, the boot is lightning fast. Any thoughts? I have many third party software programs installed and am trying to avoid a fresh Leopard Install. Here's my story. On Wednesday last week, we had a power outage. (Yes, I had a surge protector. It didn't matter.) The next morning, when I turned my iMac on, it wouldn't boot. It got to the startup icon, but it just spun forever. I restarted and ran fsck, and it gave me a bunch of invalid sibling link errors. I used my Mac Mini to look at the hard drive in Target Disk mode and got the same result. I also tried using Disk Warrior, which hung a couple times before rebuilding the directory, but that didn't help. I took the iMac into the Apple Store, where a Genius checked it out, reset the PRAM, and then got a kernel panic. He told me I'd have to "erase and install," which I did (I had most of my important stuff backed up, but still lost some data, unfortunately.) I rebooted with the Apple install CD and reinstalled the OS. Then I rebooted into the clean install. The machine was extremely slow and took forever to get to the desktop. Then it hung with the spinning beach ball when I tried opening the Applications folder. A couple more pokes around the desktop eventually produced another kernel panic.
Yesterday, we got the hard drive replaced. I just finished reinstallation the OS, and guess what? It still won't boot. I get the Apple icon after the start up chime, then we get a blue screen that's quickly replaced with a gray screen. Then a black screen, then a gray screen again. This repeats forever with an occasional spinning beach ball until I restart.
I should note that I can boot into single-user mode and run fsck, and it reports no problems. I'm running DiskWarrior now for lack of any other ideas, and while it booted into the CD, it took forever to do so. I'm completely out of ideas, so other than throwing this machine in the trash and buying a new one, is there anything else I can try to diagnose the problem? Please note I was able to boot into a CD and reinstall the OS twice so far, so it still seems to be functioning to some extent.
Any ideas?

Did you format the new drive, if not it has to be formatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) before the OS can be installed. Here is a simple how-to guide:

New hard drive and OSX install but not linked to my Apple ID

My hard drive died on my MacBook Pro (2012) and so I had a new one put in. Before this they managed to save a back up of all my folders, files, pictures etc. They then re installed my OSX software (not my original as that was Lion, I think this one is Mountain Lion - it's version 10.8), and started up my computer to put my 'back up' of my folders etc onto the computer before returning it to me. However, by starting up the computer and going through the welcome section, they have logged in without my Apple ID and so my computer is not synced to that apple account. This computer is now not registered with my apple account. This means, my iLife is gone (iPhoto etc). How can I restart and have the computer linked with my Apple account. I need to be able to sync up to access my iLife, my previous purchases such as Pages, and sync my iPhone with the computer again.
How can I fix this?

'They" are Apple technicians or an AASP tech? I had a similar situation where Mt. Lion was installed on my MBP, by a genius bar technician, which originally came with Lion. The solution was to reinstall Lion. Then to install Mt. Lion, I had to get a redemption code from Apple and then install it. This then connected my ID with Mt. Lion.
If you have purchased Mt. Lion, it should still be in your App store account. If you have not purchased it, consider installing Mavericks instead (it is free).
I suggest that you start the MBP with the OPTION-COMMAND-R keys down. The display will show a revolving globe and proceed with the installation. This connects with the Apple servers and installs the original OSX. You will need a solid Internet connection.

New Hard Drive and OS Install

Need some advice. I have a 60 GB Macbook, Intel chip set, Tiger, that I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard and install the new SL OSX. So, I purchased the $169 box set and a new 320 GB HD and a sleeve for the old Internal HD. My thoughts are
1. Take out old HD
2. Install new HD
3. Install SL from Disk
4. Do updates
5. Install I Tunes and other software I have disks for
6. Put old HD in sleeve, connect via USB
7. Pull over bookmarks from FireFox, and DOC files from MAC Office
8. I Tunes, this is my tricky part
Moving the Library into the new HD. Can I just drag the folder into the new HD location in I Tunes for the folder?
Do I have to De-Authorize the Computer Before I pull the old HD? If so, when I drag the folder over, then I have to Authorize again?
Any help and or noted flaws in my approach would be greatly appreciated as it's the wife's system, doing upgrade for XMAS.

I had an enclosure without firewire, USB or Ethernet only, the USB 2.0 transfers very well and fast. My old Internal had Tiger but kept giving lots of erroneous closures and problems, so I bought a new 320 GB Internal and loaded SNL clean.
So, after loading everything clean and updated software, I had items on the old internal that I wanted. Migration was going to let me do it, but, it said it was migrating 33 MB, which, minus, the OS of Tiger, that's how much I had stored on it to begin with.
I was leery of letting migration move all that, but I could not find any info on Migration, in other words, once it selects the 4 areas of items to move and it tells you how much GB will xfer, I didn't see where it would allow me to de-select items I didn't want to move, like settings and things that I had already set up.
So I dragged and dropped items between HD's. I have I-Tunes on DVD and will do a restore from that for I-Tunes.
Cannot figure out how to move password memory files or address book contacts. I assume it's a PLIST file, but which one and if so, can I just drag and drop or do I have to delete the current existing file first and so forth.
I also realized I forgot to deauthorize I-Tunes on the HD I pulled out, but I am using it as external storage and it does have an OS on it, so I am guessing, worse case, I could boot from external, open I-Tunes and do it then????
I'm a old PC guy, new to MAC, so I do not clearly understand file options at times.

Brand new hard drive and still can't get past the gray screen

i was having problems with my mac last night going to the gray screen, sometimes i'd get the folder with the question mark. i looked up for solutions and i tried every one i could find short of reformatting the hard drive. nothing worked, getting the start-up disk causes the mac to freeze on the screen with the picture of a disk and an arrow after i press the arrow to go into disk utilities. i took it to the apple store, which i wasn't really happy with my service there- i was called up immediately but then was never able to explain what was happening to the guy he just plugged in the computer, went back to helping someone else and periodically looked at my screen. i understand that they probably take care of multiple people at once so they don't get complaints about wait times, but i don't think i was really helped at all, he just ended up saying that i needed a new hard drive and if i knew how to put one in i was better off doing it myself then sent me on my way. well i bought a new hard drive and upon installing it and putting in the mac os x disk it still freezes and no solution has worked yet.

So all you need then is to know how to format the drive and install Snow Leopard.

Playlists Missing After Install New Hard Drive and Upgrade to Win 7

My computer needed a new hard drive and I upgraded from Win Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Home Premium.
I am trying to get my Playlists back for my iTunes in my "Administrator" user account, after reinstalling iTunes and putting my music libraries back onto my computer.
(I had installed 32-bit Win7 OS myself, computer worked OK for about 1 day, then would not boot up; I took computer to shop, they said I needed new Hard Drive, and I gave them my new Win7 OS computer disks)
I am confused over whether I have 32-bit OS or 64-bit OS. They recommended installing 32-bit OS, I agreed, and believed that I had 32-bit OS installed; however, Computer / System Properties state "System type: 64-bit Operating System"
Prior to my installing Win7, I backed up the following onto my Western Digital "My Passport Essential Portable Hard Drive:"
("My Administrative Account"): Users / Owner / My Music
and
("My User Account"): Users / Yank / My Music
My "Administrative" and "User" user accounts contain different songs in iTunes.
If helpful, I could describe what is in each of these 2 backed-up music folders.
To get started, I copied both my "Owner" and "Yank" user folders in the C: User folder; however now I have "Owner," "Yank," and "Yank.Owner-Toshiba" folders in the C: User folder. I think I did this by creating a new Yank user account by creating a new account, not by my copying a folder into C: User folder. The Owner folder has a picture of a lock on the folder icon.
Because I had trouble merging My Music folders in the Owner folder, and I was confused, I copied everything that was in the Owner folder into a new folder in the Owner folder, "NEW OWNER FOLDER." I also copied my Owner Music folder into several places in my Users / Owner folder.
I also ended up changing the "iTunes Media folder location" several times, using iTunes "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / change "iTunes Media folder location". When I chose "Reset," it shows "C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media"
I've also played around with "Edit / Preferences / Advanced tab / 'Keep iTunes Media folder organized' "
When I open my iTunes, I have no playlists.
However, when I went to my "Yank" user account and opened iTunes for the first time, the playlists associated with that account were visible.
How do I get my playlists back on my Administrative Account, which is my main song collection and had many, many playlists?

I didn't try shift-start of iTunes, but I DID GET MY PLAYLISTS BACK BY FOLLOWING YOUR OTHER ADVICE:
I went to my external hard drive, went to my backup at Users / Owner / My Music / iTunes / and searched for library.itl
Four files with that name were found, with different dates.
I chose the most recent, dated just a few days before I made my backup to the external hard drive.
I copied it to my computer's hard drive into the following location:
C:\Users\Owner\NEW OWNER FOLDER\Music\iTunes
which overwrote the file which was located there.
When I opened iTunes, ALL MY WONDERFUL PLAYLISTS WERE THERE!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SOLVING THIS FOR ME!
CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW DISAPPOINTED I FELT WHEN I BELIEVED THAT I HAD LOST ALL OF THE PLAYLISTS WHICH I HAD CREATED OVER THE YEARS? Many of my playlists were composed of whole albums whose songs I had added to iTunes.

New Internal Hard Drive and Clean Install: Errors, Frustration and Hopelessness

First Off:
Macbook 13" (late 2009) ... It was running Mountain Lion 10.8.5 with 2 gigs of memory and 160gig stock hard drive.
I started this process almost a week ago and despite numerous attempts every night I have had no luck. I appologize if the details here are fuzzy, my head is spinning after reading dozens of threads and attempting multiple solutions to each error I've received and i cant remember everything I've tried so far...
I got my new memory in the mail first, upgraded to 4 gigs and everything works fine with that..
Next came my new Seagate Momentus 750 gb 7200 rpm SATA 3gb/s 16Mb Internal Hard Drive.
Using this guide: http://osxdaily.com/2012/02/17/make-bootable-os-x-10-8-mountain-lion-usb-install -drive/ (and cross checking other guides) I ended up creating a bootable external drive using my 160gb External Firewire drive for my clean install to my new hard drive. So far so good.
I then shut down the computer, removed the old internal hard drive, installed the new, restarted the computer holding option key and booted up using the External Hard Drive, and the install software started fine. Note: I have attempted to re-erase the drive so many times without luck that I cant remember if I actually successfully erased the drive originally to begin with the installation, but either way I started the OSX reinstall and it got almost all the way finished before it gave me the error message:
"Install failed. Mac OS X Lion couldn’t be installed, because the disk (volume name) is damaged and can’t be repaired. Click restart to restart your computer and try installing again."
restarting of course did nothing, it repeatedly gave me error messages and made me quit installation...
Disk Utility isnt getting me anywhere, im either getting errors like:
"POSIX reports: the operation couldnt be completed. device no configured"
it wont allow me to erase the drive or partition the drive
"Disk Erase failed with the error: File System Formatter Failed"
and everytime the drive fails to erase or partition, it disappears from the list of drives on the left of the disk utility screen and i have to restart the computer for it to reappear for a second try. Typically the volume under the drive is greyed out and says that it is unmounted.
Ive zapped the PRAM.... and Ive done other things that I cant quite remember right now because my brain is boiling from reading too many **** threads on multiple devices....

So funny story...
While writing this discussion I had to come to the computer and try to erase the drive so I could see the error code for reference. The erase didnt work as usual but I wrote the error code down here.
I also could not remember the error code for partitioning the drive so I attempted that as well so I could write down the code, and this time it magically partitioned successfully! The only thing I did differently was that I didn't rename the partition because i figured it wouldn't matter anyway. Since the partition was successful, I attempted the Reinstall of ML and it magically worked!!
I dont know what the **** happened but ive been attempting this install every night for like 3 hours since Monday and this is the first time it went through... for no apparent reason?
Ghosts? Magic? Full Moon?
we may never know...

Windows 7 won't load after installing new Hard Drive and Recovery software

I guess a virus crashed my hard drive so I bought a new one. I installed the new drive and loaded the recovery disks that I also bought from HP. Apparently Windows didn't load properly and it keeps telling me to RELOAD WINDOWS. I've tried starting over from Disk 1 but it's not doing anything different to fix it.
I removed the new hard drive and reinstalled it but it's still doing the same thing.
What am I doing wrong and HOW DO I FIX IT?

Before trying the following, make sure you can still read the 25 Character Product Activation key on your Windows COA label ( 5 blocks of 5 alpha/numeric sets ).
Assuming that this is just a problem with the Recovery process, there is a straight forward work around if you have ( or can borrow ) a retail Windows 7 installation disc that is exactly the same version as your OEM installation - ie if your notebook came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit this is the exact retail version you would need.
If you don't have access to a retail disc, you can create an installation disc yourself using another PC - just download the correct Disc Image from the link below and use an application such as ImgBurn to burn the ISO correctly to a blank DVD - a guide on using ImgBurn to write an ISO to a disc is Here. These Images are clean and from a well-respected source, however there are only limited versions available.

Use the disc to perform the installation, enter the Windows activation key found on the COA Label when requested and when the installation has completed, use the 'Phone Method' detailed in the link below to activate the OS - this method supported by Microsoft and is popular with people who just want a clean installation of Windows 7 without the additional software load normally bundled with OEM installations.

Power on the computer and insert the DVD immediately.
Hold down the 'C' key to boot from the Snow Leopard DVD.

After selecting the appropriate language, if necessary, select Utilities, and Disk Utility.
You'll likely need to partition and format the new drive before it's recognized.

Your "Firefox personal data", like bookmarks, are stored in your Profile folder in Firefox. See this support article about how to recover that data from that old hard drive and transfer it your your new Profile.

Because you are running lion.. FCS 6 is a Power PC app and Lion doesn't support Power PC anymore.. So you can't install it.. Three options..
1. Revert back to Snow Leopard.
2. Purchase FCP X...
if you can't stand FCP X
3. Call apple directly, 1800-MYAPPLE and ask to purachse FCS 3 for $999... (its FCP 7)

If you know the location and you have all the songs in there, you could try the below:
For iTunes 9:
Choose File > Library > Organize Library
For iTunes 8:
Choose File > Library > Consolidate Library
For iTunes 7 or earlier:
Choose Advanced > Consolidate Library.
A message will pop up.
For iTunes 9:
Place a check next to "Consolidate files" and click OK.
For iTunes 8 and earlier:
Click Consolidate.
This action copies all of your music and other media files to the new location.

Which computer? There is a label on the bottom.
Exactly which hard drive is it? Give us the specific model so we can look it up.

If you have restored the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media, that probably means you restored to a drive with the new advanced-format technology.
Try installing this driver.
