New hard drive and need to restore from time capsule

I replaced my hard drive with a new 1TB drive. Now I need to retore everything from my Apple time capsule. I'm having some trouble doing so. I first booted up with the new drive and selected restore from back up under disk utility and everything seemed to be going fine until I had to restart the computer when it was finished. When I did, I got the "panic" error and the computer wouldn't boot up in any mode (ie safe mode). I then started holding C button to start with the operating disk in and at set it up that way. My back up stuff is on there somewhere because 150GB is being used but my computer looks like it just came out tf the box. I also did a upgrade to Lion last year, How do I get that back?
Thanks for any help

  • If I install new hard drive can I still restore from time machine?

I'm planning on updating the hard drive in my macbook to a 320gb drive. I currently have a drive with around 120gb of space. I know there are programs available to back up the entire hard drive. But, I've been having issue with my computer lately and I would rather just start over and just back up microsoft office because I don't have the key anymore and my iTunes library. Can I do all this from just my Time Machine back-ups and reinstall everything else? Or is the best way to make a bootable back up to my new drive and then install the hardware in my mac book.

I did this just a few weeks ago. I replaced my 80g hd with a 320g hd. I used time machine to backup my computer. All I had to do was swap hard drives. Use the install dvd to start computer. i then used disk utility to properly format the new hard drive (mac journaled). Then I used the restore option. That was all I had to do. Everything from my old hard drive was put on my new one in about one hour. Time Machine backs up your entire hard drive unless you excluded anything. So you can have a clean install of everything just the way it was on your old hard drive just by using Time Machine.

  • Can u use time capsule as a normal hard drive and don't activate the time capsule in my macs?

can u use time capsule as a normal hard drive and don't activate the time capsule in my macs?

Yes, but it will be slow and expensive compared to just buying an external and plugging it in locally.

  • Hi, I have an issue with my Aperture, I recently had a Samsung HD with 225 gb Aperture library fail. As per the instructions I moved the library to a new hard drive, in this case a 2tb Time Capsule. Now Aperture opens but no pictures

Hi, I had a Samsung 1tb hard drive fail with a 225gb Aperture library on it, as per onscreen instructions I transferred the library to another hard drive in this case a 2tb Time Capsule. Now when I open the Aperture library I see the file structure and the white outline of the photos but no photos. When I try to export photo I get a pop up saying, 'selected master version offline'. The metadata is showing the photo details and size but no pic, and the aperture library is still showing it as 225gb
If anyone has any suggestions or a way of finding the master files I would deeply appreciate it.
    Many thanks

When a drive reports failed the data on that drive should be suspected to be corrupt. Initially one should assume any copies made of data after the drive starts reporting failing will also be corrupt.
    After a drive reports failure:
When a drive reports to be failing our first concern should be the integrity of the existing backup of the data on that drive. It is easy to manage to corrupt the backup data during efforts to retrieve the failing-drive data.
Step one should be to back up the back up of the failed drive. The known-good backups should be carefully quarantined from the likely-corrupt data.
Step two (which should only happen after step one is complete and verified) is to make post-drive-failure copies of data from the failing HDD and make efforts to verify the accuracy of the data copied from the failed drive.
    Before a drive reports failure:
Originals from the camera card should be separately backed up prior to import into Aperture or any other images management application. Always.

  • Had to get new hard drive and need to reinstall iTunes

My very new PC went beserk and I had to get a new hard drive. Everything off the old drive is irretrievable. I have my iTunes library backed up to an external drive (everything is also on my iPod). However, I don't want to have to "count" the new computer as one of the five machines on which I can copy my iTunes library, since it's not technically a "new" computer but just a replacement of my not-so-old one, which was barely 9 months old before it went kaput. Is there a way to reinstall iTunes and my library without getting dinged for yet another transfer of the library? Thanks.

Hi I can't figure out how to post a question of my own, so I'm asking it on this one because it is close to mine.
I just switched from a Sony Viao to a MBP, and tried to transfer my ITunes library from the Sony to my new MBP using a USB stick. I put all the music in my music library onto the stick, it said that it used 4.99 GB, and when I tried to put the music onto my MBP it only added 1.98 GB.
I thought that maybe the music it wasn't transferring was the music I purchased on my earlier laptop, but it transfered a few of my movies that I purchased off of ITunes. Please Help?

  • New hard drive - can't back up to time capsule

I recently replaced the hard drive in my imac. I successfully migrated all my data etc to the new hard drive. However, i can't back up to the original "backup" on time capsule. Time machined trys to set up a completely new backup for which there is insufficient space. Thus, I need to know how to back up to the existing backup, or. preferably, format the timecapsule disk to creat space and do a completely new backup. Please assist.

    plectical, welcome to the discussions!
Time Machine / Time Capsule "sees" the new drive on your iMac as a new computer, so that is why it is attempting to back up the entire contents of the drive.
I don't believe there is a way to tell Time Machine to continue with your current backups, but you might want to check with Apple to confirm.
If there is not, the best option you have is to erase the current contents of the Time Capsule and start over with a new, complete backup of your iMac.
To do this, you would go Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Disks Icon (top of pane) > Disks Tab (just below icons)> Erase Disk.
Once complete, you would need to set up Time Machine again by opening System Preferences > Time Machine and selecting your Time Capsule as the destination for backups and start the process again.
Allow plenty of time (overnight, maybe longer depending on much data you have to backup) for the first backup and use an ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule directly to your computer if at all possible. Ethernet will be much faster than wireless and there will be less chance of errors on the large initial backup.
Once the initial backup is completed, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will be much quicker.

  • How can i format my MacBook Pro hard disk and recover my data from time capsule?

    Hello,
My MacBook Pro is running slow, more and more. Everything started with the "upgrade" to Lion.
Can I re-format my hard disk and recover from Time Capsule only the data and applications I really need (including Snow Leopard as OS, maybe)?
    Thanks

The problem is that it is a Western Digital 3.5 inch internal hard drive housed inside a hard drive caddy. So the only way to connect it to my computer is through a dock.

  • I'm installing a new hard drive and wanted to restore it from Time Machine. When I restart w/ "command" /"R" it returns to orig. startup disk.

I'm trying to load a new harddrive using timemachine when I restart the Macpro using "command"/ "R" keys it restarts to orig. startup disk and not to restore option.

If you installed a brand new hard disk, there is no recovery partition. OS X Internet Recovery should enable you to boot with ⌘ R but this does not work on all Macs, just ones with updated firmware that enables this function. Yours may predate that ability.
    Read this: from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718
Some computers that did not ship with OS X Lion or OS X Mountain Lion installed may have a software update available that allows them to use Lion Internet Recovery.
Therefore, without a recovery partition, your 2008 MBP cannot boot OS X Internet Recovery.
Boot from your original system installation disc, then restore from your Time Machine backup. It will create the recovery partition on your new HD.
Time Machine backup volumes are also bootable, so you should be able to boot from the TM volume using Startup Manager. Connect the TM volume then an Option key while starting the MBP.

  • Hard drive not appearing during restore from Time Machine?

While attempting to restore Time Machine from an external drive to my new MacBook Pro, the hard drive doesn't appear in the graphic.  A second external drive I have does appear, but not the Macintosh HD.  Suggestions?

    Howdy dlayne40,
If your hard drive is not showing in Time Machine, check it with Disk Utility.
OS X: If you can't back up or restore with Time Machine - Apple Support
    Check your Drives
Use Disk Utility to check your startup disk and any external drives you are using for backup.
Repair any issues and try again.
    Best,

  • I just replaced the hard drive on my macbook pro, reformatted new hard drive and copied over a backup from time machine now I have a kernel panic message (you must restart) - what do I do now?

i just replaced the hard drive on my macbook pro, reformatted new hard drive, installed a back up from time machine and now have kernel panic ( you must restart your computer) what do I need to do?

If you're able to boot, launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents – the text, please, not a screenshot. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post "shutdownStall" or "hang" reports.
If you can't boot in the usual way, try a safe boot. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
During startup, you’ll see a progress bar, and then the login screen, which appears even if you normally log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Safe mode is slower than normal, and some things won’t work at all.

  • IPhoto events and pictures missing from iPhoto after restoring new hard drive and upgrade to iLife11

My iPhoto events and pictures are ALL missing from my iPhoto Library after I tried restoring my programs on a new hard drive AND upgrading to iLife11!  Over the last few months, I upgraded my 2008 Macbook Pro's hard drive from a 250 GB to a 500 GB hard drive and since then have been manually installing and restoring programs and software.  I decided to do things manually because I had problems with doing Time Machine backups/restores in the past, so before I upgraded the drive, I manually saved everything to a Western Digital MyStudio 1 TB hard drive that I had just for the purposes of a second back up.  Anyway, I tried importing the pictures onto the new library, but couldn't find the hard copies at first, so that didn't work.  I then tried deleting the iPhoto Library that came with new operating system, then copying my old backup onto the new hard drive...that didn't work either.  However, when I right clicked on the iPhoto Library icon on my external hard drive (the original) and clicked on "show package contents," the folder not only contained the originals, but they were still organized by year and event just as I had them originally!
So, then I thought "why don't I try just importing the pictures directly into the new iPhoto Library!"
I tested it out, and sure enough, it worked!  I then tried importing an entire folder (which, was actually the name of the event), and again it worked!  So, I literally clicked and dragged my entire 2007-2009 library of pictures (which was about 35 GB) back into my iPhoto Library!  AND, this only took about 30 minutes to download, enough time for me to write this post and the following instructions to Recap:
              1. Open your new iPhoto Library
              2. Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
              3. Click on "Show Package Contents"
              4. Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
              5. Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
              6. DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reaseon, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
I assume this could work on other iLife programs, but luckily I have MobileMe and my iCalendar updated itself, though I did have to do some tweeking...
Hope this helps other people out, GOOD LUCK!

I'm re-posting the answer to this problem so I can show it has been answered:
    Open your new iPhoto Library
Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
    Click on "Show Package Contents"
Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reason, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
              GOOD LUCK!!!

If you have installed a new hard drive , you will need to have formatted it in Disk Utility correctly. This may explain your problem.
Boot  into your 10.6 Install disk again at the top menubar > Utilities > select Disk utility and in there select your new hard drive, and select the tab Erase and choose to make the format as  Mac OS Extended Journaled. When that is finished look in the main window to make sure that the partition map scheme says GUID Partition Table.
Now go to the Restore tab and reinstall from your backup.
