New hard drive for Pismo

Hi everyone,
Owing to the pathetic hard drive in my Pismo, I've convinced myself to upgrade. I've got the original 6GB IBM TravelStar DARA-206000 drive, and I'm aiming for something around 30GB. I thought about the Hitachi TravelStar DK23CA-30, which I can get brand new for £36, or nudging up 10GB I could get a Seagate Momentus 5200.2 40GB drive for about £50. Are these drives compatible with the ATA controller on my Pismo? It's a March 2000 G3 400, running Tiger.
I need a lot of storage space, since I have a lot of music and a lot of documents to dump on the disc. Since this is a desktop-replacement arrangement, I'm not too worried about battery, but being able to get at least 3 hours of life, like I currently can, would be nice. Noise is also a factor - the old IBM disc is clearly audible (I'm sure it's not about to fail - I hope). Any other good models - I'd like to hear from you.
Secondly, how would I go about transfering my data across from the old drive? I've got about 4.5GB of data to shift, since I don't have the Tiger installation CD or a spare £80. I've heard about cloning the hard drive - is this really as easy as it sounds? If so, is it cheap/free?
As a last point, does anyone know a way to keep the heatsink on the processor card? I can't get my card off without the heatsink falling off.

Upgrading the internal HDD on my Pismo is one of the best things I did for it. Not only are the newer drives larger, but they are faster. A larger drive will not only have greater storage capacity, but it will also improve the performance of your Pismo and make it faster.
You need a 2.5inch ATA 6 drive. A higher number is fine as these drives are backward compatible. I don't know about the particular items you mentioned as I am not aware of their specs.
I would also suggest an even larger drive than you are contemplating, at least 60 GB. Music and photos fill up a drive pretty fast, and you do need to keep 10 to 15% of the capacity free for virutal memory etc. Besides, as you know when you buy a 60 GB drive you don't get that much storage capacity. My 100 GB HDD gives me just over 93 GB storage capacity. In this case, more is better.
In terms of moving your files, you will need either an external Firewire HDD to which you can clone your present drive and move it back after your new installation. To clone you can use either Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper which you can download and use.
The second method is to use Firewire Target Disk Mode for which you will need to use a second computer with Firewire capability.
Thirdly, you can place you present/old HDD in a Firewire enclosure, and clone it to your new HDD.
One last thing. Here is a set of directions for removing the old HDD and installing the new. It is a pretty easy process and not as intrusive as the direction in PB Fixit.

Hold down the Option key while you boot your Mac. Then, it should show you a selection of devices. Click your flash drive and it will boot from that.

Need a new hard drive for T43...

I need help finding a new hard drive for my T43. It appears that my hard drive is starting to fail. It just seems to not power up all the time during boot up or it just dies after it's in used for a little while. The T43 seems to only be compatible with certain types of hard drives though and I can't find any place that still sells them. Does anyone know of a place that still sells hard drive compatible with the T43?

Welcome to the forum!
Any PATA laptop drive will work as long as it's 9.5mm high, but most of today's drives will throw a "2010 error" on boot, which is really not a big deal IMHO.
The biggest hard drive that won't throw this error is Fujitsu MHV2120AH (120GB/5400rpm) that has been discontinued a while ago. Expect to pay a hefty premium for a sealed one.

Just user to user....based on past and current history, Adobe Tech Support is not going to help you with a technical issue which is preventing you from using your purchased serial number for Photoshop Elements. Version 12 is not the current version. And, the Adobe Tech Support is limited even for the current version which is 13. If this matter involves a purchased activated serial number trapped on a crashed computer while you are trying to install on a 3rd computer, then probably Adobe Chat Activation can be of assistance. If that is the case and you want to explore that possibility, then click on the following link

In need of a new hard drive for my old G5 computer

Hello there, I'm not as savvy as you are with computers but I am in need of a new hard drive for my old G5 computer that my husband uses. His crashed. If you did it all over again would you buy the same new hard drive? If so, where did you buy it? I don't even know where to start and was SO happy to find this recent post on installing new drives into the G5. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you!

I actually just ran across this hard drive oddity for the first time myself just yesterday. It seems that some older Macs may not be able to use the newest SATA interfaces on some hard drives.
I an attempt to not get overly technical, SATA is the current interface type on computer hard drives. You can get some additional information from Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA. There are currently three revisions, SATA-1 (the oldest), SATA-2 (the current version), & SATA-3 (the latest and greatest).
So what happened was that my G5 could not use the SATA-3 drive I purchased because the computer could not support the SATA-3 standard. It was possible to "slow down" one of the other test SATA-3 drives to make it work like a SATA-2 and so it may be possible to do the same to other hard drives.
To answer your question, I would NOT purchase the saem hard drive for my Mac as it does not work for this older Mac.
My suggestion, if you can find one purchase the same hard drive that was in the computer. That way you know it is compatible. If you would like to upgrade, you will have to do some looking. Although I cannot recommend a specific drive, my two favorite companies are Seagate, www.seagate.com and Western Digitial, www.wdc.com. You most likely have a 3.5" drive, if you have a desktop, 2.5" for a laptop. WD has the Cavier line and Seagate has either Barrcuda or Momentus. What you are looking for is capacity.
So, both Seagate and Western Digital are good. You need a 3.5" drive for a desktop or 2.5" drive for a laptop. Stick with a SATA-2 drive also known as a SATA 3Gb/s drive for compatibility. Get a drive that is 7200 RPM or higher. Finally purchase the largest capacity at you can afford. Amazon is a good general place to been looking.

I need to get a new hard drive for my imac g5. I went to staples and picked up a maxtor sata hd but the screws aren't in the correct place as the original HD. Does anyone know the exact HD that came with the computer and where I can purchase one?

I think I figured it out. The reason why the screws aren't in the right place is because the original HD that comes with the computer has an external housing around it. I think what I need to do is just take that housing off and put it on the new HD that I purchase.

Are you on Windows or Unix? And are you using ASM?
I'll assume you are on Windows....So after allocating the drive, you will format it say as F drive. Then you can create a directory T:\Flash. The parameter determining the location of the flash recovery area is db_recovery_file_dest. But you also need to set the size of the flash recovery area as well. After that's done. You can do your backups to Flash and see if the directory is populated.

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application SuperDuper. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

Hi,
Installing Snow Leopard revealed a faulty hard drive, but Genius Bar got me a new hard drive and installed Snow Leopard and the rest of the Mac Box Set for me.
I'm putting my computer back together, and I had all my files backed up on a Passport, but what do I do about the applications that I had? I could use a reinstallation of Office for Mac and Final Cut Express. Can I ask the companies directly?

More reason to back up your +*entire system,+* whether with Time Machine, a "clone" app like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, and/or some other way.
You should still retain the original discs, of course, but having a full system backup greatly reduces the chance you'll need them.

New Hard Drive for HP DV6 & Recovery Issues

Greetings everyone... Happy Holidays to all!
As luck would have it, on the first day of the Holiday break, my wife's laptop hard drive decided to go on strike - luckily, I could mount the hard drive on another system and get most of the files off that were needed. In replacing the hard drive and doing my research on the web and on these forums, it appears there is a fair amount of disparity between those having success and complete failure when running the recovery disks after a hard drive failure and, thus far, I am in the second camp (not going as smoothly as advertised). As a side note, I created the recovery disks from the system upon receiving it and the disks were verified as part of the creation process as being 'good.'
I am working on an HP Pavillion DV6t, product number XC100AV that originally shipped with a WD Scorpio Blue 640GB drive (WD6400BEVT, 5400 rpm). We have had this system about 13-14 months (just past that 12 month warranty period) and the system is very lightly used (nightly facebook'ing is about as strenuous as this system has worked). Since I have a high degree of experience and confidence in working with computers, I didn't have any reservations in going down to the nearest electronics retailer and picking up a new drive to put into the machine. I picked up a Seagate Momentus XT drive (500GB, 4GB SSD hybrid, 7200 rpm) and put it into the machine in a few minutes, adjusted the BIOS settings to boot from the CD drive and disable the HP Web flash capability, and proceeded to load the CDs through the HP system recovery manager. The system progresses through the recovery manager without incident or error (indicating the recovery disks are 'good'). However, when booting the system after the recovery CDs complete, I get the nice message that no boot file can be found. This tells me that there is no MBR (master boot record) created during the system recovery process and there is no way to boot into the operating system.
Given this information, I have a few questions to those experienced in this area:
1. Am I required to contact HP to purchase a new hard drive to get the recovery to work properly? To put it another way, is there an HP 'tatoo' (as alluded to in other posts around the Internet) that would prevent me from using a HDD that is technically compatible?
2. If the answer(s) to #1 is no, what am I missing in getting the recovery to work properly? Are there any MBR utilities that I should use in addition to the recovery processes outlined by HP?
3. Am I required to purchase the same HDD (size, manufacturer)? I decided to stay away from WD after it failed after only 13 months of light use...

That happened to me too (after testing windows 8), and the only way I was able to get W7 back on my PC was to install XP, and have it format the drive. I let XP install and didn't bother installing any drivers.
I booted from the W7 disk and it worked without incident.
You have to have advanced knowledge to install XP on a modern notebook, because you need to know how to install the necessary sata drivers in order for XP to even see the drive.
I noticed that MS has re-established the W7 ISO file download links again in the last day, so see if you can make your own disk again and try using that to install windows and then try to use the recovery disks if you want.

5,400 RPM if you want longer battery time between charges
7,200 RPM if you want more performance.

Hard drive removal and replacement procedures can be found in chapter 4. You can do it yourself.
Just save the old hard drive because you need to take some things off of it (caddy and screws), and transfer them to the new hard drive.

Why am I not able to install snow leopard on a new hard drive for my macbook pro, which at one point was upgraded to Lion?

I've just had my hard drive go caput and after purchasing a new one was inclined to install snow leopard but received an error message when attempting to do so.
I did not create a back up or restore file before I decided to upgrade from snow leopard.
I'm wondering why am I not able to simply install snow leopard on a brand new hard drive. What would clue it into me having had ran lion before and why can't I simply delete that kernel or said file. It makes completely no sense to me. I come from a pc world where if I choose to format a hard drive, I can do a clean install of whatever OS I choose. After all I only paid for my laptop as should be able to do with it what I wish.
Any suggestions or insight would be greatly appreciated

1. Was Lion on the machine and trying to downgrade?
2. If so this might be an issue. Newer machines are done for current OSX.
3. If you have Lion on your machine try to install Snow Leopard on another partition or portable HD
4. After you format and install SL on the other partition or drive Try to boot from this machine retarting and holding the Option key at boot up.
5. See if that work.
This is a trial and error way but Mountain Lion is right around the corner and Snow Leopard is 2+ yrs old.
