New hard drive in Mac Pro showing 0 bytes after partitioning

I bought a Western Digital Caviar 2TB internal hard drive for my Mac Pro (2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon (late 2006), 12GB RAM, Mac OS 10.6.8). It already has two 500GB internal drives in two of the four slots.
I slotted the new WD hard drive in and started up the Mac, getting an alert saying there was an unrecognisable disk and did I want to initialise it? Yes, so it opened up Disk Utility.
This showed my two 500GB drives plus the new WD drive at 2TB. To initialise it I erased the disk which failed with an error ("POSIX reports: The operation
couldn't be completed. Input/output error").
I next decided to use Partition instead, choosing just one partition of 2TB, Mac OS Extended (Journaled). After 7 minutes it said the process had been completed and the volume was mounted, though it didn't appear on my desktop, just in Disk Utility. I thought a restart would refresh and show it on the desktop.
Once the Mac was up and running again there was nothing there at all - and now it wasn't even listed in Disk Utility. I shut down, took the hard drive out,
looked at it, scratched my head, replaced it, and turned the Mac back on.
Once again I got an alert telling me the disk was uninitialised and would I like to format it, so clicked OK and Disk Utility opened. This time the disk was
there (WDC WD20EZRX-00DC0B0) but no volume. The info said the drive had a size of 0 Bytes and I could not erase or partition as all buttons were greyed out,
with the Partition tab saying 'this disk is too small to contain partitions'.
So what can I do now? According to macupgrades.co.uk this drive should work in my model of Mac (they recommend and sell it, though I purchased it from NORDPC via Amazon as it was a little cheaper).

I tried, with the help of my more computer-literate brother, to erase the disk from the command line via the Terminal, getting a result of "Error: 6: POSIX
reports: Device not configured". (Actually we first tried to reformat it, with an error of "does not appear to have a valid file system format").
Does anyone with more knowledge of such things have any ideas or advice? It would be much appreciated.

Unless the drive and sled are not inserted properly - unlikely - or that other drives don't work in that slot - watch out if true, unlikely but loose SATA cable - it IS a bad drive.
If you don't have a PC, setup Windows VM and use WD Lifeguard which is excellent and tests for things like bad SATA cable communicating.
You could also - I always use Partition tab btw - go in there and set it to exFAT and Windows Master Boot Record. All you want is a good drive. This one is not.
GUID tests first and last 10,000 sectors or more to insure that the partition tables and hidden areas work (they are not it is failing). Use to be that a "backup volume information block" was treated as optional if any sectors failed, now it is not.

Cant install mountain lion on a new hard drive 2011 mac pro 17"

for some reason I bought the infamous 2011 mac pro, and the hard drive kept having IN/OUT problems and after it destroyed half day of work, I decided to get a new hard drive, *blue WD 500g" but i have tried EVERYTHING and i just cant install mountain lion on it.
1.- i tried forcing the recovery mode so It would connect to the internet and download mountain lion but after 10 min or so i trows the -2002f error at me
2.- I tried to use the old hard drive that i put on a external hard drive reader so I could get the recovery partition but i just keep restarting the installation no reason given
3.- downloaded the mountain lion and tried to installing it on the system hard drive of the laptop trough a computer running snow leopard but dosn't let me.
4.- tried the same thing on target mode without success
5.- using the recovery partition I used disk utility to se of the partition was locked but it was not
6.- created a different partition to see if it would install it there didn't work.
i just don't understand why
any toughs?

Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
   2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
Use DiskMaker X to put your installer clone onto the USB flash drive.
Make your own Mavericks flash drive installer using the Mavericks tool:

     sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume
     /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed to the screen so be careful to enter it correctly. Press RETURN, again.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.

Adding new hard drive to Mac Pro (quad core)

I've just ordered a new Mac Pro quad core (2.66 GHz) with one GB HD. Since Apple is charging £240 for a second drive I decided to get it from somewhere else. I found a 1GB Western Digital Caviar Green but I also noticed 1GB WD Caviar Black. I wonder if anybody has any experience of those drives and would they work with the latest Mac Pro ?
Does anybody knows what make of drive is Apple using in their latest Mac Pros ?

So I formatted a brand new hard drive to MAC OS (Journal), I then could save on the hard drive. Not two days later Im back at square one, the program wont recognize the hard drive again.

So, hard to beleive, but I am having some trouble with Final Cut Pro X.
This last week I formatted a brand new hard drive to MAC OS (Journal),
so that I could save on that hard drive.
Well it went great.
I saved my project on there and copied a few others over as to free up space on my Laptop.
Then, not two days later Im back at square one,
the program wont recognize the hard drive.
It wont even open the events up off my hard drive,
as to jog the program into reqcognizing the scratch disk (which worked twice before).
What happened?
How do I get the program to re-recongize my newly formatted hard drive?

The name of the drive, or the name of some folders inside the drive, may fool FCP X into believing it is a camera.
Also, you should not use the drive for time machine backups.

Depends on where you got it - if it came on yoru compujter then you need to have accepeted it in the App store - and it will be in your purchases when you log in with the Apple ID that you used to set up your computer - it mahy be hidden - if you do not find it unhide applications in teh App store

Best way to transfer everything on new hard drive for mac book pro

Hi have a mid-2009 macbook pro with 4 GB ram and 250 GB hard drive, which is full now. I just bought 8 GB RAM to speed it up and a new 1 TB hard drive. I am running latest Lion (that I downloaded from mac app store - I have the original install DVD for Snow leopard). What would be the best and cleanest way to transfer everything (OSX, applications, data, files, user preferences, passwords, etc from the old hard drive to the new one)^
1- I heard I can hook the new hard drive via USB and do a clean install of my Snow leopard DVD, then update to Lion via mac app store. Then how do I transfer everything else?
2- I also heard about carbon copy cloner, but somewhere it says there is a file in Lion that this will not copy.
Anybody have any helpfull answers?

My suggestion would be to use Migration Assistant. This program you have in your Utilities folder and once you hook up your old Hard Drive to the new computer via USB or Target Disk mode, it will pretty much direct you on how to do the whole process. If you have any other questions, let me know.

I've done this many times and it works very well.

Just installed new hard drive in mac book pro 15", when trying to boot OSX from original disk I still get a folder with a question mark in it. How can I reinstall the OS?

Can't seem to get my mac book to boot from the CD after installing new hard drive.
I keep holding down "c" while restarting the machine with the disk in but it just keeps ejecting the disk and giving me a folder with a question mark.

If your on 10.5 with a Intel Mac, I think Apple has jinxed the firmware so you can't boot from the 10.5 disk anymore.
So far several people, myself included, can't boot from a 10.5 OS X disk on a Intel Mac.
Your going to have to buy a 10.6.3 Snow Leopard retail disk, it's wayyy better than 10.5 anyway, faster and most stable even better than Lion. Have to buy iLife though as it doesn't come on the 10.6.3 retail disks, only free with grey disks.

Using time Capsule to replace new hard drive on MacBook Pro?

I am replacing the internal hard drive on my MacBook pro (early 2008). I have a time capsule that I would like to use to restore the entire back-up on the time capsule to the new hard drive. What is the procedure to do this? Thanks.

First, prep the new drive:
Drive Preparation
1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
Second, install Snow Leopard on the new drive.
Third, after Snow Leopard starts for the first time you will be in the Setup Assistant. When you complete the registration you will be presented with the options for continuing or restoring from a TM backup or another Mac. Select the TM option and restore your data.

Install new hard drive into MacBook Pro?

I have a MacBook Pro from early 2008 and I've just run out of space on the 200GB hard drive which came with the computer.
I've read in a few forums that a 1TB hard drive WILL fit in this computer, and in some other forums I've heard that it won't, because it's too big. A terabyte would be ideal as I'm a media student and use this computer for literally everything.
However, if the Terabyte won't work, I'd be happy to live with the 750GB version of it. I'm looking at the Western Digital Scorpio Blue ones at the moment.
Now, my question is this; Will my computer be able to handle the new hard drive? Or should I just buy a 1TB external, run everything off that, and just upgrade the RAM?
I'd also look at getting a cooler mat for my computer if that would help.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

OWC is one of the most reliable online vendors of Mac-related stuff. You can believe that description.
The confusion arises from the fact that Apple says the height limit for drives in all MBPs is 9.5mm. Obviously Apple doesn't support the use of thicker drives in them, but in fact they do fit and work in some models, as the quote above describes.

Creating A New Boot Drive For Mac Pro Desktop

I would like to create a new and bigger boot drive but having not done this before I would appreciate any direction that would make this as painless as possible. I will continue to use Lion but am a little lost when it comes to doing this with the download process of Lion as well as transferring what has been created on the current HD in the MacPro. Get yourself a $89 Samsung 840 120GB instead along with Icy Dock $15. You will. Love it.
You don't need a large drive for the system. All you need to do is MOVE all the data and media files and every thing else, just leave the small 4GB /Users/myuseraccount/Library on the boot drive with the OS and apps. Everything else gets off loaded.
Leave your drive you ahve now as is for backup. Move data and clone the system.

New Hard Drive in MacBook Pro Early 2011, can't reinstall Mountain Lion.

My computer started having issues for some reason, it would just restart randomly about every 5-30 minutes. Disk Utility said that the drive needed to be reformatted, so I went into Recovery mode and erased the Hard Drive and then tried to reinstall it and it crashes EVERY SINGLE TIME I try to install it.
I will say this though, my computer has two hard drives instead of 1. I took out the optical drive and replaced it with a hard drive. For some reason the bootable drive was the optical, so I tried installing it on the main system drive. Well, I can't get Mountain Lion to install on either drive so I went and got a new one, but that one is having problems as well.
I took the computer into Simply Mac and left it with them to get an estimate on a trade in value and to see if they could Mountain Lion to install. Well they did something, because they got it installed, but my computer is still restarting quite often. I want to install it on the system drive (new hard drive) and then have the other drive for memory storage.
IF YOU HAVE ANY ANSWERS OR HELPS PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ABSWER. I'll try my best to give you guys all the information you.

What I am primarily interested in right now is how do I install Mountain Lion on the new Hard Drive. I don't have an Optical Drive in the computer because I put in another Hard Drive for more space in the computer.
I can't boot from an External Disc Drive, I can from a bootable USB drive, but it crashes everytime.
Even downloading from the Internet Recovery doesn't work. When it gets nearer to the end of the download, it says that there is 8000 more hours of download time, and then shortly after that it crashes back to the Main Recovery Screen. It won't install it on the new Hard Drive, this is what it does on the USB stick of Mountain Lion.
Can anyone help me?

Can I format an IDE Hard Drive from Mac Pro?

I use a mid - 2012 Mac Pro; run Mavericks OS X 10.9.2.
1. Can an IDE hard drive (using an external drive) be formatted to 10.9.2, from my Mac Pro using Mavericks? (the IDE hard drive is new/unformatted).
2. Once formatted to 10.9.2, can I reformat the IDE hard drive to Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.8, from my Mac Pro using Mavericks?
3. If so, would should I do to accomplish Question # 2 above?

The version of the OS that is running is not relevant to formatting the drive. When you format a drive in any OS, you should select "Mac OS extended journaled." (That is, unless you plan to share the drive with a Windows computer.) Formatted this way, the drive can be used with any version of Mac OS.
You do not have to reformat the drive each time you connect it with a different OS.

Hard Drive for Mac Pro Questions

Hi, I have 2, 600GB hard drives (Approximately) in my Mac Pro. 1 is for Windows Vista, the other is for Leopard. I'm running low on storage space on the Mac Side. I customized my Mac Pro when I bought it off the Apple Site.

Well, I would recommend shutting down the Mac Pro first…
Then install your new Hard-Drive / Start Up and reformat the drive.
