New hard drive, need PCI card, do I need to reformat?

Hi all,
I'm afraid I didn't do my research properly beforehand, and allowed a retailer to convince me to buy a new 160GB hard drive, only he neglected to tell me that I'd only be able to see 128GB unless I bought a PCI card as well.
So, I've just spent two days backing up my stuff, installing the new drive, and transferring my stuff back to it, re-installing programmes, and generally giving my mac a 'spring clean'. Now I find out I need a PCI card so I can make use of the spare GB on my new drive, so can anyone reccomend a particular one?
Also, once the PCI card is installed, does this mean I'll just suddenly have more space, or does it mean I'll have to reformat the drive again (and back up all my stuff and reinstall it all over again)?
Many thanks for any advice.
Rob

Drive would have to be reformatted to use all 153GB - maybe not worth it.
A PCI card won't buy much in the way of performance... just to get 28GB space? skip it and use as is.
You could just put it in FireWire case and have that be your new backup. FW bridge (Oxford 911/912 etc) support large drives. Get a FW800 PCI for $49. Or pick up a larger drive for FW backup.
If you had bought a nice 300GB 16MB cache... then yes. Or if you redo this in some way, consider SATA drive and controllers.

  • Satellite T130 - Stuck on loading screen - new hard drive needed

After a message on screen saying back up your hard drive it will fail soon and pressing F1 it then seems to get stuck on the loading screen. I am not too clever with computers. Do I need to simply buy a new hard drive to get the laptop working again or is it far more complicated than that. My guess is the latter.
Thanks in advance for any help given

The first question is: have you created recovery media (USB stick)?
If not do it so long your HDD is working OK. original recovery image is saved on HDD but you must have it as USB back-up that you can use for installation if HDD must be replaced.
Do it as soon as possible. More about that you can read in users manuals.
What to do with HDD? In my opinion so long it works there is no reason for panic. Use your notebook as usual. If you will notice some performance problems or more and more error messages I think you should replace it.
HDD replacement should not be so problematic. HDD cover must be placed at the bottom side of your notebook. The smaller one is for RAM and bigger one must be for HDD. Check it out.
Before you do anything remove battery and disconnect your notebook from AC adapter.
If you don't have experience with this stuff please don't makes some risky steps. You can damage something.

  • Photo files moved to new hard drive, need to re-connect photo tagging

Moved back catalog of photos from an almost full internal hard drive to a new larger external hard drive.
Elements Organizer is now unable to locate tagged photos on the new hard drive
Is it possible to re-connect the photo tagging ?

If you can go back and do a PSE backup/restore that would be your best and easiest approach.

    Hi,
    Try the following.
Remove the Windows 7 installation disc and shutdown the notebook.
Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.  Insert the Windows 7 installation disc.  Select the Boot Options menu ( usually f9 ).  Use the arrow keys to highlight the CD/DVD drive and hit enter - if prompted to 'Press any key to continue......', do so.

  • New hard drive, need to sync music on my phone to the computer

I had to replace my hard drive a couple of weeks ago, and now when I go to sync my music content to the "new" computer, I get the "Erase" warning. Is there a work around for this?

Yes, if you transfer your iTunes library from the old hard drive to your new hard drive assuming the old drive is an internal drive. If an external drive or you store your iTunes library on an external drive, you can connect the external drive to your computer.
There is no way to send the iTunes content on your iPhone from your iPhone to MobileMe.
Your iTunes library that was/is available on the old drive must be available on your new drive, or made available by the computer that you sync your iPhone with.
Other than that, use the iTunes transfer process from your iPhone that I provided with my previous post, but this is for iTunes content on your iPhone that was purchased from the iTunes Store only.

  • Installing OS 10.4.3 on "new" hard drive - need to change mount location

I have an older G4 that I am setting up for my little sister. The original hard drive in in went bad, so I put in a "new" one that I pulled from a working PC. I also bought OS 10.4.3 to install. When I try to install it on the new disk I get the message "You cannot install Mac OS X on this volume. Mac OS X cannnot start up from this volume." I have re-partitioned the drive and tried all of the formatting options, but no matter what I do it mounts to the /Volumes/hard_drive (where hard_drive is the name of the partition I created). I am not sure, but I suspect that I need the drive to mount to the root directory to fix this problem. Does that sound right? If so, how do I do that? There are no other hard drives on this system, though it does have a zip drive. Please Help!
    G4   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

The drive is mounting properly. Have you checked the drive to be sure you have it jumpered as the MASTER? I'm assuming from your post that "replacing" means there is still only one hard drive in the computer.
Because I don't know exactly what you did to prep the drive let me provide instructions just to be sure:
    1. Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu to one that is the total space on the drive. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
If the drive is prepped as above you should then be able to install OS X on the drive. When the Tiger installer reaches the point for selecting the destination be sure to select the correct drive as the destination drive.

  • New Hard drive Needed - Please Help

    Hi guys,
Two questions concerning my iBook G4 933Mhtz ...
Can anyone provide me with a good link to "Instructions for Replacing Hard Drive", and
Which hard drive (specs, physical size) do I need?
    Tks
    Paj

    Hi Paj,
The following web site has both repair guides and parts for iBooks. The drive is an ATA100 2.5" 4800rpm but I'd go with a faster drive for the replacement.

  • Install OSX on new Hard Drive - need to create install disc or drive

So my old hard disk got wrecked and is in the trash can right now. I got a new one and I'm trying to install OSX from scratch on this new HD.
Problem is, my Macbook Pro (late 2011) came with Lion and no installation disk.
I have a laptop with windows, a 8GB USB drive and some blank dvd disks. Can I create an installation disk with those tools? I don't care if it's Lion or Mavericks.
I looked it over and couldn't find any direct way on doing this. Every page I found assumed I already had an installation disk or an image downloaded.
(I can even borrow a friend's mac if I for some reason it's not possible to do it via windows)

    Hi There,
All you need to do is download one of the full OS installers on your Mac from the Mac App Store.  You do not have to install it just download the installer.
Then use Diskmaker X (http://liondiskmaker.com) to make a bootable USB flash drive.

  • New hard drive, new drive letter, need to keep my library

On my current setup, my OS (Windows Vista), iTunes, and all other programs are installed in drive letter C:
I have all my music saved on drive letter F:/MP3
In F:/MP3 there are several more folders separating the music by genre (For example F:/MP3/HipHop or F:/MP3/Rock, etc.)
Drives D: and E: are hard drive partitions that are not needed anymore.
    This is my concern...
I will be reformatting my current hard drive and will be doing a clean install of Windows 7 and iTunes on it. They will be on drive letter C: again.
I will also be installing a new, hard drive with more storage and it will be drive letter D:
I will have 2 separate hard drives in the computer, and just 1 drive letter to represent each hard drive.
C: (150GB hard drive for Windows and programs)
D: (1TB hard drive for storage of files, music, pictures, movies, etc.)
I want to copy all my music from my old hard drive to the new hard drive D:/MP3 and keep the folder structure the same.
How do I tell iTunes to look for my current library (playlists, music, etc.) in the new D:/MP3 folder instead of the old F:/MP3 folder?
I hope this makes sense, I tried to explain it as best I could.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You can mess around with editing the XML file, but be advised that will NOT import *Date Added*.
I don't know if Date Added is important to you, but I add music daily to my library and do not want to lose that metadata.
Any reason you can't just leave your content on the F: drive? You can assign drive letters in Windows however you like. They don't have to be in C, D, E order.
You can keep using the iTunes Library.ITL from your current setup on the new Windows 7 setup.
Just make sure Windows 7 knows the drive letter is F: BEFORE you fire up itunes the first time.
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Change-add-or-remove-a-drive-le tter
This iLounge article has a good explanation about moving to a new drive or system.
If you keep your current F: drive and copy your current ITL file, you won't have to consolidate anything. You won't have to edit anything.

Remember to deauthorize your PC before you reformat it.

  • I am not able to access old music after a new hard drive install.  Wants an old password and I'd

I am unable to sync music to iPad iPhone etc. from 27" iMac with anew hard drive install.  Wants an old really old apple I'd and PW that hasn't been in use. What to do?

    Hello DeedeeB6075,
Thank you for posting in the Apple Support Communities.  It sounds like you have some music that you purchased with an older Apple ID that you don't have access to because your new hard drive needs to be authorized. If you know what the Apple ID is, you can go to https://iforgot.apple.com/ to reset your password.
If you cannot remember the Apple ID, you can follow the steps in this article to find your Apple IDs, and then go to https://iforgot.apple.com/ to reset your password.

Hold down the Option key while you boot your Mac. Then, it should show you a selection of devices. Click your flash drive and it will boot from that.

  • Do I need a new hard drive & can I use Leopard?

I have a PowerBook G4 17" 1.5Ghz with OS X 10.3.9 on the original 80GB hard drive, I've been getting a lot of problems with the computer acting very slowly and getting 'hung up' with the color wheel spinning endlessly, during which nothing responds, I can't force quit, the only thing I can do is force a shut by holding down the power key. Sometimes it takes a long time to start up. I've tried re-installing the OS but still the same problems. I ran the Apple Hardware Test which gave this error code "2STF/4/3:ATA-100 ata-6-MASTER".
Does this all mean that my hard drive is going down and I need a new one?
Can I use any size hard drive e.g. a 250GB one?
Also - If I put a new hard drive in can I then install Leopard?
All info received with many thanks.

    Welcome to the Apple discussions.
That code means there are problems with your hard drive. If you look at Disk utility (on your hard disk in applications/utilities) you may see that the S.M.A.R.T. status shows a problem. Or if you have SMARTreporter installed, it may not be green.
You can certainly use up to a 160GB hard drive. There was a discussion recently suggesting a BIOS (basic input output services) limit to 160GB ... I don't know if that's real or not.
If you do replace your hard drive, you might consider the slight price premium for a 7200rpm drive. You'll appreciate the extra snapiness in response time. And yes, you can install Leopard on it. After installing the new hard drive, boot from the DVD drive and use disk utility to format the hard drive in mac os extended (journaled) format. Then you can install Leopard.

Type move itunes library into the google serach bar.
It has always been very basic to always maintain  abackup copy of your computer.  Do you not have a backup copy?
