New Hard Drive, OS X Disc Help!!

Hi,
Me and my mum's partner have both got MacBook's. This week i am going to get a new hard drive as 60GB is way too small.
I do not have my OS X disc's with me as i am here on holiday and they are at my other house, would it be possible to use his OS X disc's when installing my new hard drive?
Or would another option be to remove his hard drive, put my new one in his and setup the hard drive via his MacBook and then swap it into mine?
Thanks,
Andrew.

If the two Macs are exactly the same model, you can do it. Otherwise, it probably won't work (the Installer won't allow it). You could try...
If you had a way to mount the internal drive externally, you could use Disk Utility to "restore" from the old drive to the new drive. That would be the ideal way to do it, because you'd get everything exactly like it was before. You can use an external case or a device like this.

Or would another option be to remove his hard drive, put my new one in his and setup the hard drive via his MacBook and then swap it into mine?
It seems rather extreme to take apart two MacBooks, but I think it would work. Won't you void the warranty (if still in effect).

  • How to install a new hard drive without bootable disc/usb

Hi- my hard drive has totally failed and although I can get into disk utility it won't let me create images and keeps coming up with input/output errors when I try.
I don't have another mac to work from and have no discs whatsoever even for older OS versions
I've ordered a new hard drive(a seagate 750GB 7400rpm one) but how do I get mountain lion on the new hard drive without any discs? If I just put in my new hard drive will it come up with an option? I have a mid 2009 MBP if that helps

I have a mid 2009 MBP if that helps
    Here is how it helps:
You need the Utilities from Recovery_HD. Your broken Mac can boot from a Thumb drive.
Use this article to download this Utility to copy the Recovery_HD from your older, working Mac to a minimum 1GB USB thumb drive:
OS X: About Recovery Disk Assistant
Then boot the new mac with the thumb drive by holding down Alt/Option, wait wait wait while it draws an Icon for each bootable Volume, choose the Recovery_HD, choose proceed arrow, and use Disk Utility to erase the drive and create GUID partition Map, 1 partition, Mac OS X Extended (journaled). Then install Mac OS X by download.

  • My MacBook won't boot into recovery mode after new hard drive installation. Please help!

I just installed a new hard drive. On boot it keeps on going to the flashing folder with a question mark inside.
I was able to format the new hard drive but am unable to boot into recovery mode to install the operating system over the air.
When I hold down Command -R it keeps on taking me to the flashing folder.
    Please help!

A new hard drive doesn't have a recovery partition. It's totally blank. You're going to need either your original install discs or a Snow Leopard retail disc from which partition, format and install OS X.

  • New Hard drive and Window disc

I bought a dv6-6047cl before, and the hard drive is not working now.  (No window disc with the laptop)
So i buy a new hard drive, after i put the new hard drive and it shows me
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
    What should i do?
Someone told me i should buy a new window 7 Home to RESTORE TO FACTORY SETTINGS.  Is that right?
If yes, which CD should i buy?  Can you show me the picture?
If not, what can i do?

you download the ISO then you need use the Microsoft tool to make the bootable memory stick or cd.
Use the links in my 1st post for the Microsoft tool & a guide on using it.
Once you have your boot media made you need plug in the usb stick or load the cd & then boot notebook & enter boot option menu & boot from cd or usb drive pending on what you decide use.
A very basic guide on installing windows 7 is in link below, don't follow it blindly, just use it as a rough guide as needed & think twice, do some research or ask questions if hae doubts<>problems ...

  • How to install operating system on new hard drive without installation disc on macbook pro 2011

My macbook pro 2011 does not come with a recovery disc or any disc at all, my hard drive recently failed and i have no backup. i have replaced the hard drive but don't know how to install the operating system on the new hard drive.

If it originally shipped with 10.7 or newer, connect the computer to the Internet and start it up with the Option, Command, and R keys held down. You'll be able to install an OS.
If it shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier and wasn't upgraded to use Apple's Internet Recovery system, phone AppleCare and order the disks.

  • White screen, new hard drive, blue screen. Help!

Tried to boot my MacBook Pro (2011) and just had blank white screen. Tried to boot from Mountain Lion bootable flash drive and just get a blue screen.
Installed new hard drive. Same thing. Suggestions?

After the dealer looked it over, he determined it has a bad logic board. However, searching online, I see the cause of all these 2011 MBP failures is due to the Raedon graphics card in them. Apple was replacing free for iMacs with the same part, but so far isn't doing the same for MacBook Pro's. I have emailed Apple, intend to call them, and posted on their support forum as well as other ones. FRUSTRATING.

  • My Imac needs a new hard drive. Can anyone help ensure I get the right one?

I have an Imac from around 2008-09. IMac8,1
It's running Mac Os X ver. 10.5.8 and has the stock hard drive in it.
    2gb ram
Running a 2.8ghz Intel Core 2 Duo and I think has like 250 gb
I'd like to get something bigger and also upgrade the operating system.  Don't need multiple TB's nor can I afford it but want to ensure i get the right thing for my needs.
It won't install adobe photoshop 6 because operating system is too old but don't want to spend money on new operating system with hard drive that keeps failing.
    Error code: 4hdd/11/40000000 SATA (0,0) !
Got this error code about a year ago.  downloaded a manual fan program that has helped but every third day or so it crashes and when i try reboot i get the dreaded question mark.  usually if i let it rest for an hour or two it fires up but i don't want to risk anymore.
    any help greatly appreciated.
    cheers

I suspect a failed HD, in that case I'd recommend Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode at least 3x. You will need the original install discs that shipped with the computer, if you do not have them any longer you will need to order a replacement set from Apple by calling AppleCare. You will need a credit card and the serial number of the machine. The cost should be nominal.

  • New Hard drive not working - please help!!!

This is an original thread that I'd started:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2066043&tstart=0
Since that, I tried the following this morning.
I took out the old 100GB drive and fitted the new 500GB (blank) drive. My plan was to fresh install OSX, install Carbon Copy Cloner and then clone the old drive by plugging it in with a reading device I have. What actually happened was the following:
I put in my Mac OSX install disc 1. I opened disc utility from the top toolbar. In disc utility the new drive showed up and I formatted (erase option) it to mac OS Extended (journalled). I then began a fresh install of OSX. As it started the macbook told me I was '+running on battery power+' and '+was I sure?+'. With full battery I said yes and continued. All was going well and it prompted for the second install disc. It got some way through that and then got stuck at 38% installing garage band loops. The new internal drive was also making a repetitive noise - not loud or anything but certainly sounded like it was searching for something. As the whole thing was stuck and nothing was working I held down the power button.
I tried again with the first disc but it wont even do anything anymore! I took out the new drive and put in the old one. Booted up. Connected the new drive to the reader with the idea of re-formatting it via disc utility.
But now the brand new drive is not readable and is making the a few funny repetitive noises.
Please help me someone - I'm very worried about this new drive now!!! Is is broken or corrupted or something???
Your help is very much appreciated

    Hi VS,
What "reading device" are you using?
As it started the macbook told me I was '+running on battery power+' and '+was I sure?+'. With full battery I said yes and continued.
It is best to have the power adapter connected when running a long process like this which cannot be interrupted.

    How long was it "stuck?"

It sounds like there is something amiss with the new HD. If you have access to a different external enclosure, (even on a PC, just to see if the HD will function), you could try erasing/formatting it again. If not, I think it's time to contact the vendor about a return.

  • New hard drive spinning wheel-please help

I have a 2008 mackbook. I went to upgrade the harderive today to a segate hard drive. I had not problem installing the hardware. Once it was installed I plugged the power cord back in and rebooted the computer. I then installed the disk utility so that I could reinstall the software and all i got was a spinning wheel. I know the computer still works because when I reinstalled my orginal hard drive my computer turned back on. any ideas on what to do? I tried holding the "c" key but that didn't help.

You're doing things right but maybe not with the right timing. Insert your install DVD and restart, press the C key immediately when you hear the startup chime, the MacBook should start successfully from the DVD then and you can run Disk Utility to partition and format your new drive. Make sure when you partition to select GUID partition scheme or your Mac won't boot.

  • Cannot restore new hard drive with restore disc

I have a Toshiba L755 with Windows 7 Home Edition 64 bit with a 640 GB hard drive. I had a hard drive failure and had to replace the hard drive. I replaced the hard drive and went to use the restore discs to reinstall my OS and all of my Toshiba application and it will not complete the setup. I have 4 discs and after each disc it says to put in the next disc. I do this and when the 4th disc completes it continues to ask for another disc. I went the install process of the discs 6 times but it did no good. I ordered a second set of restore disc from Toshiba but I am still having the same issue. Can someone help me. I don't know what to do. It will allow me to install a copy of Windows 7 Home Edition and use the key on bottom of laptop but then I cannot get my original Toshiba apps back. I want to restore laptop to out of the box.

  • How to install a recovery partition after installing a new Hard drive? and FileVault help.

    Hi,
I recently swapped out hard drives and when I did a Time Machine backup to the new drive, I noticed there was no Recovery HD partition for my drive. Is there a way to install it back on my MacBook Pro (Late 2011, running 10.7.4)?
On a slighlty different topic FileVault won't let me encrypt my new HD it says "Some disk formats don’t support the recovery partition required by encryption. To use encryption, reinstall this version of Mac OS X on a reformatted disk."
What formatting does my disk require for FV to be turned on? Currently it is Mac OS Extended (journaled)
If there is a solution to solve both these issues, or any one issue it would be appreciated.

The formatting being referred to is actually the presence of the Recovery Disk.
You can't enable FV2 without a recovery partition being present. The reason is strictly logical: if your entire disk was encrypted, how could you run the unencryption procedure you need to start up? That would itself be hidden behind the encryption. Hence, for FV2 to be able to work, you must have a Recovery disk present.
When you boot up with FV2 enabled, the login screen you see to enter your password is actually running from the recovery disk (invisible to the user). After you enter your password, recovery boots your encrypted partition and logs you in to your account.

  • HT1329 Hi All - My hard drive failed and I am trying to move all my music from my ipod to the new hard drive. I am operating on Win 7 64 bit. Can anyone help please?

    Hi All,
My hard drive crashed and is no longer usable. I just installed a new drive however, I am not finding any way to export my recorded CD's from the Ipod touch to the new hard drive. Can anyone help please? I thought by enabling syc with Ipod woudl do it but to no avail.
    Thanks

I used a 3rd party program called copytrans http://www.copytrans.net/ that is not free to move my library from my ipod to my itunes library when I had to start from scratch.  After that happened I started backing up my music that purchased from the itunes store to a dvd so I would always have it if things went south.  Now I always backup my purchased digital music to an optical disc just in case plus everythng else I have is on retail cd's so I can just rebuild my library from scratch again if I have to.  You should also regularly back up your itunes media folder to another disc so your entire library will be backed up just in case you should lose your program drive.

  • How to I transfer my music from my ipod to the new hard drive?

My windows laptop crashed two months ago and I lost everything on it.  I was able to get the hard drive replaced but all of my music is on my ipod (nano - 2nd edition, I think).  Only a small percentage is purchased via itunes.
I have been googling how to now move my music from my ipod to my new hard drive but most solutions assume that I still have the old laptop/hard drive.  I know I was able to do this previously when the hard drive crashed, but I can't seem to remember now as it was about 5 years ago.  I'm afraid to do anything just now as I don't want it syncing to an empty library and have my ipod wiped clean.
Is there any way of moving the music from my ipod to my itunes library on the new hard drive??  Please help as I don't want to have to reload over 100 cd's
