Also, to be compatible with my setup, what are the requirements? Just 2.5 and 9mm? thanks!

    Will that work?

That drive should be fine - there's even a review on Newegg from a user who installed it in a MacBook. He liked it, but says it vibrates more than the original drive.
I'll be installing the 160G WD Scorpio in my MacBook later this week, from Newegg. If it vibrates too much, it will go into an external enclosure, and I'll try something else for internal.

  • My Hybrid 1TB Seagate Hard Drive will not work in my data doubler caddy installed in the optical bay

My Hybrid 1TB Seagate Hard Drive will not work in my data doubler caddy installed in the optical bay of my MacBook Pro

Thanks for all the advice. It looks like I have finally got my MBP working again (after two weeks of pain).
The WD HD works fine internally, but restoring from TM introduced a whole load more of issues/incompatabilities (see above). Eventually the only thing left was to re-build rather than restore:
    i) mount the WD disk internally and install Snow Lepoard from the orginial installation disks
ii) get online, and after much trying download Lion (previously purchased). Perfrom all update.
iii) Connect my Time Capsule, identify my data, photo and music files and then copy them accross by hand
iv) install all the other applications (e.g. MS Office:mac, etc) from scratch.
This exercise has shown me that even though tools and procedures exist to address separate issues, when the complexity of inter-dependence is introduced there are a raft of problems that crop up.
Now I am back in business I will be using TM and CCC to take full and regular copies. I did this previously, which has saved me from losing my data and cherished pictures, but hopefully next time (and I'm sure there will be a next time) the recovery will be less infuriating.
BTW I got a refund on the Seagate Momentus XT. They guy in the shop said it wasn't the first time he'd heard of this issue with MBPs. Great.

  • OS X lion USB Thumb Drive - will this work on new Mac Mini or MBA (2011)?

    Hi All,
Not to be confused with the other similar posts, I am interesting in only clarification of what build comes with the USB Thumb Drive now available on Apple Store - will this work with new MBA and Mac Mini?
    Thanks,

    KeanuReeves wrote:
From what I have read about the usb installer, it is not intended for you to try booting from the stick after wiping your hard drive. You are to click on the installer
You may be correct, but this statement is quite confusing in that context:
    Important Note
When you install OS X Lion using the USB thumb drive, you will not be able to reinstall OS X Lion from Lion Recovery. You will need to use the USB thumb drive to reinstall OS X Lion.
So, if the Thumb drive is supposed to take the part of the Recovery partition, it seems that it should be able to boot. However, the license agreement still requires an Apple computer running Snow Leopard, so maybe it isn't bootable.

  • External Hard Drive Will Not Work

I  purchased the recommended 1TB WD hard drive.  It worked for a couple of days, recorded some programs-- all of which froze after a few minutes, and now my DVR repeatedly shuts down and reboots when the external drive is plugged in.  Here's the message I get:
the set-top box will reset because an external hard drive was improperly disconnected
The only way I have disconnected the drive is by going into settings and clicking on "EJECT" as recommended.
Would someone please tell me what is going on here?  Thanks.

Sorry to hear about the troubles you are having with the drive. One thing you can do to try to correct the drive issue is to hold down the power button on the drive. You will get a pop up message that an unknown storage device has been found. Click to accept the new device. The drive should now be connected. Go to the main menu of the DVR box and select the option for DVR.  Go to expanded storage and format the drive. Let us know if further assistance is needed.

  • If I have manually set "Start Time" and "Stop Time" for songs, and my hard drive is backed up in Time Machine, when files/songs are transferred on new hard drive, will my "Start Time" "Stop Time" options be there?

My Macbook Pro will be going in for reimaging and my hard drive will be wiped, I want to know if all my iTunes preferences will be copied if I have backed them up on Time Machine. Specifically, if I have set certain "Start Time" and "Stop Time" for my songs, and I copy my iTunes library, will these "Start Time" and "Stop Time" options remain or will I have to manually set them one by one once again? I need a reply ASAP! Thanks so much!

As far as I'm aware the start & stop times are stored in the library database, not the media files. If you backup/restore/transfer the whole library then the settings are included. If you create a complete copy of your iTunes folder on another drive you can connect to that copy by holding down option/alt as you start iTunes so you can check that everything is working properly before you send the Macbook away.

  • Got A new hard drive - will my old photo albums stay on facebook?

    Hey everyone,
My harddrive crashed last week and was replaced by with a new hard drive by apple support. I wanted to know that when I try to use iphoto for the first time and upload more pictures to facebook, will the albums previously uploaded to FB with iphoto on my old hardrive be deleted? Because I lost all my albums on my harddrive when it crashed, i'm worried I'll lose the albums that are on fb if I try to sync. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

No - i didn't - but my albums are still on fb. I'm wondering if i reconnect to fb with a empty iphoto if it will delete the pics already on fb.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi, I have an issue with my Aperture, I recently had a Samsung HD with 225 gb Aperture library fail. As per the instructions I moved the library to a new hard drive, in this case a 2tb Time Capsule. Now Aperture opens but no pictures

Hi, I had a Samsung 1tb hard drive fail with a 225gb Aperture library on it, as per onscreen instructions I transferred the library to another hard drive in this case a 2tb Time Capsule. Now when I open the Aperture library I see the file structure and the white outline of the photos but no photos. When I try to export photo I get a pop up saying, 'selected master version offline'. The metadata is showing the photo details and size but no pic, and the aperture library is still showing it as 225gb
If anyone has any suggestions or a way of finding the master files I would deeply appreciate it.
    Many thanks

When a drive reports failed the data on that drive should be suspected to be corrupt. Initially one should assume any copies made of data after the drive starts reporting failing will also be corrupt.
    After a drive reports failure:
When a drive reports to be failing our first concern should be the integrity of the existing backup of the data on that drive. It is easy to manage to corrupt the backup data during efforts to retrieve the failing-drive data.
Step one should be to back up the back up of the failed drive. The known-good backups should be carefully quarantined from the likely-corrupt data.
Step two (which should only happen after step one is complete and verified) is to make post-drive-failure copies of data from the failing HDD and make efforts to verify the accuracy of the data copied from the failed drive.
    Before a drive reports failure:
Originals from the camera card should be separately backed up prior to import into Aperture or any other images management application. Always.

  • T61 New hard drive will not boot, BIOS doesn't reckognize.....

Ok i need some major help here.  I recieved a new Seagate 500Gig internal hard drive for my lappy.  so i thought i would do a fresh install of windows vista, via the restore media that i created from the thinkvantage software on my laptop.
Now here is where the problem lies....Before I install it, format it or write any data to it, BIOS reads the new drive just fine.   As soon as i run the recovery software cds  i get a verry anoying error.
The following is the exact error message.
    "error 2100: HDD0 Initialization error (1)"
Has anyone else seen this and been able to install a new hardrive in this laptop?
Weird thing is this.  I put the old HD back in 100GIG and connect the new one, that BIOS won't read after data has been written to it, to an external USB case.
I load windows vista just fine off my old drive, plug in the now 500G external drive and windows reads the data that has been written to it from the restore CDs.
Can anyone help me out here.  I have spent the past 2 full days trying to figure this out.
    Thanks

Ok just as an update thus far. i still can't get it to read the hd after i install from the recovery discs...which is odd of course.
It does read the drive before i install anything to it though.
OK time to add something really really weird though, i an attempt to figure this out, i installed the 500G drive and put ubuntu on it just to see if the problem was w/ the HD  having a failure or not.
ubuntu installed just fine, and i am typing this off the installed ubuntu OS.
SO now i have to ask, is there a bug in the recovery cds that thinkvantage has us create?  is there a way to test that?
Does the t61 have a limitation w/ a 500GIG hard drive that will not let the recovery dvds work or install properly?

  • M45-S165 with new Hard Drive will not reformat and recover.

I replaced the crashed Hitachi 80GB hard drive with a new WD 320 GB WD3200BEVE. I have the Toshiba Recovery and Applications / Drivers DVD Satellite M40/M45 Series CD, media number TK143/PMAE00300010. I start the computer, insert the disc and shut it down and wait a minute. When I restart the computer and press the F12 key when I see the Toshiba screen and I select boot from CD Drive and press enter. Then the screen goes black and "Starting Windows 98" shows up with other copy. Next I get "Welcome to the Toshiba Recovery Utility" and press F1 for OK to accept license agreement. Next I get "Recovery in process" briefly then the WARNING screen for erasing hard drive and press "C" for continue. Next "Toshiba" screen comes up again then "starting windows 98" again, then "Welcome to recovery utility" again. I press F1 then "C" and it starts all over again. What am I missing?

Hi, hjbugs, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Disconnecting the drive while your Powerbook was accessing it probably caused your problem. It may be repairable using DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro, but if you don't have access to one of those and aren't going to buy one, reformatting the drive with Disk Utility may be the only other way to make it usable again. If it contains data you need to recover first (i.e., data that isn't also stored on your internal HD or other storage media), download the free demo version of one of the data recovery utilities mentioned in this thread and use it to see what is recoverable. If the files you need are recoverable, buy the full version of one of the utilities and recover them.

  • New hard drive will not recover from disks cq62 notebook

I made the recovery disks when the laptop was purchased (compaq cq62-423nr).

ran bios diagnostics and recovery disk diag too. everything passed. It also has the current BIOS rev.

I'm thinking the recovery discs is bad or corrupted.
If you like, order recovery media directly from HP:

  • New Hard drive will not boot

Today i installed a new 1Tb segate HD in my mid 2010 MBP.  After a long painful waiting game of backing up to time machine i swaped the harddrives, and reinstalled OSX Snow Leppard. After importing all my time machine data i attempted to log in.  I was dennied access on both accounts on the computer. I tried a restart and now my mbp is hanging in the blue screen.
FYI my time machine backup was created of mountin lion.

To move the files manually, erase the drive and install Snow Leopard as usual. Then, follow the Setup Assistant steps and, when you arrive to Desktop, open Finder, go to your external drive > Backups.backupdb > yourmac > Latest > Users > user and copy the files to your internal disk. For example, if you want to copy the data that is in Pictures folder, you would want to copy it to Pictures folder in your internal drive
