New hard drives coming. Update projects now or later?

I want to upgrade to FCP 10.1 (from 10.0.9) at the earliest. I travel and shoot video abroad but return to the US to do major editing. So my current hard drives are small: I have media and backups that I've been moving back and forth between drives. I use three Lacie Little Big Disks (2x1TB 7200rpm; 1x2TB 5400rpm) and a Drobo Mini (2 sets of 4x1TB drives). I've also put all my Camera Archives on a 3TB WD USB 3.0 drive.
I have new desktop drives coming right after Christmas. I am considering upgrading to 10.1 now. I will use Event Manager X to update projects and their associated events one at a time (following the guidance of Philip Hodgetts' article on FCP.co).
My question: Is it advisable to go ahead with the upgrade now and then move libraries to the new drives? (Or would it be better to wait until the new drives arrive?)

May as well do it now. You can move the libraries at will whenever you want.

What installed iPhoto there in the first place?  Was it the same version of iPhoto that came with the Mac?  Was iLife added at a later time from a Mac Box Set?   You can selectively install iPhoto, and then apply the appropriate iLife update without taking it to the shop, after removing the application, or recover it from your backup.

  • New Hard Drive - Software Update Problem

I have a 13' MacBook Pro running OS X v.10.6.7  Snow Leopard, a little more than a year old.  A few weeks ago, it had a kernel panic..long story short, ended up needed my hard drive replaced.  Now I have the new hard drive, moved all of my files from my external HD back onto the laptop.  When I tried to open iTunes, I get the following message: The file “iTunes Library.itl” cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes. Would you like to download iTunes now?.   So, I ran Software Update, which tells me I have 11 items to update. I click Update, it goes through and updates for about an hour, then tells me I need to restart to complete the update.  I click restart, then a screen pops up telling me that I have items that need to be updated, would I like to update and restart? So I click update and restart, it seems to go through and update the same 11 items before an error message appears telling me the update could not be completed.  This has happened every time I try to run the software update.  Any suggestions?

Try installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo.
Restart your Mac after the combo is installed.
If necessary, you can Re-create your iTunes library and playlists

  • New Hard drive doesn't show up (MBP late 2009)

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro that was running Lion. The HDD failed so I installed a new one. This blank HD had no OS on it so I get the blinking question mark (the problem that started it all). I found my old snow leopard disk and tried booting from the disk. Each time I tried this I got hung up on the screen that just shows an apple and a little swirly time thing. I also tried booting holding option so that I could select exactly what I wanted to do. When I tried this, I noticed that there is no HDD showing up next to the picture of the disk. I know this is not normal because on my (working) iMac, it shows both my hard drives and the snow leopard disk. I recently went to the "Genius" bar where they performed a diagnostic. The test showed that the SATA cable, logic board, and HDD were all in place and properly functioning. I have already reformatetd the new hard drive through target disk mode on my iMac. I have no idea what else to try. I've let it run for several hours and all I get is an apple with the swirly time thing and a very hot laptop.

Hold down Option while you start up. Only the DVD will be shown, because the new drive is not yet bootable.
Choose the DVD and click the proceed arrow. It should proceed within one minute.
"A Mac that cannot boot from an appropriate System/Utilities DVD has a Hardware problem."
You should soon get the "What Language ?" screen and be able to proceed to Install.
If you cannot Install because of the Drive, answer only the What language question, and WAIT a quarter minute for the MenuBar to be drawn, then choose Disk Utility from the Utilities Menu.
Make sure the new drive is present, and has GUID Partition Map and a Mac OS X Volume in Mac OS X Extended, Journaled.

  • My IPhone used to be synced to my computer.  A new hard drive was installed and now the phone says it's syncing, then a message appears saying the next time my computer is available is will sync.  I've followed the instructions and no success.

My hard drive burned up and had to be replaced.  When I tried to sync my IPhone after my computer repair, the phone says it's syncing and the icons spin, but nothing happens.  In a few seconds a message appears saying it will sync the next time my computer is available.  I have gone through the instructions and procedures for syncing four times and can not get the thing to sync.  Apparently the phone hasn't synced in a long time.  What do I do to sync my phone again?

    jrmetzger,
iOS runs on iPads and iPhones; OS X runs on Macs.
Given your situation, I’d highly recommended that you purchase a SATA-to-USB adapter, so that you can test both your old disk and your new disk externally, since it might be that the problem is due to a faulty internal SATA cable rather than due to faulty disks.

  • Running 10.6.8 on Macbook after new hard drive installed. Issues now.

Original hard drive died. Replaced it and installed 10.6.8. Iphoto is not on device nor a few others. Will not upgrade even when 10.6.8 is upgradeable. Just not running with full capabilities. Should I wipe it and start over? Bring it to Apple store? Iphone was connected and imported pics and not even sure where they went to. Thanks.

The App Store version of iLife ‘11 programs (iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, Garage Band & iWeb) will only work with 10.7 or 10.8. You can get the iLife ’11 DVD which will run on 10.6  on eBay or Amazon.com fairly cheap.

  • Help with new hard drive and data recovery

I have a macbook pro 13" from early 2011...last week the hard drive crashed and after a few hours at the genius bar had to got  tekserv to recover my data and get a new hard drive and update to 8GB of Ram.  When I got my macbook back I was given an external hard drive that had everything from my old hard drive saved by the users on the old hard drive.  I was hoping I could just transfer the user over to the new hard drive but since I had to restart the computer as a new computer I am not able to just reassign my old profile as the new one on this laptop.  Maybe I've done something wrong but at this point I transferred all my documents over, moved my music and pictures over but I have a few things I can't figure out that I'm hoping someone can help with.
    1. Do emails that were in my mail program from both gmail and my verizon.net program get saved somewhere or do I have to just assume those were lost?
    2. my iTunes library is now there but none of my playlists are there.  Should those have been saved somewhere in my iTunes folder that I should see them?  I'm concerned about syncing my iPhone or iPads to iTunes without those there.

  • Mac Book Pro 15" mid 2009 after installing new hard drive and 8 gb memory, start up disk is still full, start up from power off is very slow, and programs open immediately after start up EX. word, excel.  Help?

I installed a new 1tb WD hardrive in my mid 2009 macbook pro along with upgrading from 4gb to 8 gb.
My start up disk is still almost full, booting up is extremely slow, and programs open up by themselves once booted up ex:word, excel.
New TB drive shows up alng with 8 GB but, new hard drive not updating somehere?  What am I missing?  See screenshots below

Thanks for the response, but I'm looking for answers to a few of the other answers before I look at completeing the steps above.
    1.  Whyis the new TB drive recognized in image 1 but still have the original 256GB size still recognized(and almost full) in image 1 also?  The HD should now be 1 TB, not 256 correct?  If this were the case, the HD, would only be fraction of full capacity,  Where is the disconnect between reconizing the installed tb HD but, it not being used?
2.Image Number 2 shows once again that the new tb internal HD is recognized.  However, in image 3, the HD 256GB drive is still shown underneath the new HD.  Does this show that I am misssing something, some step, related to confirming the new HD should be fully reconized instaed of this old 256 that still remains?
    3.  In image 4, the SATA heading, shows the TB hardrive,  However, in image 5, the 256GB drive is still being shown under the storage heading?  Once again, seems like I've missed some simple step to make this all the same?
4.Why is the start up from boot up soooo slow now.  I was never even close to this slow(slower than PC startup slow) before the new HD was installed.  IS this common when updraging to a new HD?  Doesn't seem right?
    5.  Why now all of a sudden when the computer finally boots up are certain programs automatically opening up, word, excel, when they have never opened up like this before?
Summary:  1. New memory issues, 2. Very slow start up, 3.  Programs opening up automatically at startup.
Until I address these issues, I'm not going to worry about loking through and deleting heavy folders.
    All responses welcomed!

  • Reinstalling Windows 8.1 on new Hard drive

Hi. I have a compaq presario cq58 & the hard drive failed before I was able to make a recovery usb. I bought a new hard drive & installed it myself & now I need to reinstall my operating system. I made a recovery usb from my husbands compaq laptop but it cannot complete installation as the product id does not match,The old hard drive had failed completely & I couldn't recover system from it either. So now I have a new hard drive with no operating system on it. I don't feel that I should have to purchase installation discs & wondered was there any other way to install operating system. My laptop is just out of years warranty & to be honest I would have expected hard drive to last longer than that. Any help would be appreciated

If you didn't create your HP Recovery Media when you first setup your computer, please contact official HP support, via the HP Worldwide Support Portal, to see if HP Recovery Media is available for your computer.
If the computer came with Windows 8 / 8.1, contact HP to order HP Recovery Media.
If the computer shipped with Windows 7 and you can still read the 25-digit Windows product key on the Microsoft COA affixed to your computer, you can install Windows 7 Home Premium using this key. Please see "How to Install Windows 7 Without the Disc" for instructions on how to download Windows 7, create the installation media, and install Windows 7 using the 25-digit product key from the Microsoft COA on your computer. • Can I start new hard drive set up again?/time machine info missing!

Hi, hoping for some guidance as I think I've made a mistake with my new hard drive set up, and now my time machine hasn't transferred everything over as I've folders missing!
My hard drive packed up & a new 10.6 was installed on my Macbook Pro.  Previously running on 10.5.8 which was backed up to time machine 3 week ago.  I switched on and went through the 'set up assistant' but when asked 'Would you like to inherit (or reuse) the backup?' I think I chose 'Don't backup now'  because I thought I could do my time machine later!  I now know I have chosen the hard route!!
Then I tried the 'migrate assistant' - it took 1.5hrs - desktop has screen shots etc as before but I couldn't access thing like 'my pictures' in bridge etc. The dock has LR, PS, Bridge etc as before too.  Then I deleted the new admin set up (so I had only my old admin.)  I restarted - no change.  I then tried 'migration assistant' again but transfered only 'Other files and folders' because when all ticked there wasn't enough room (-81gb)
Now I can go into LR catalog it only has 2 folders (instead of more than 20), and in Bridge I have files & folders, but on accessing them I get 'Items could not be found. It may of been moved or renamed.'
I've looked into erase & install - but I don't have the disc. Maybe I should go back to the shop who installed 10.6?  Can I start again so I can transfer from time machine in the set up?
Any advise on how I can get my info back would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks, Heather

I have the same problem, but it is happening with various USB drives including an iphone. If I have any of these connected via a USB hub to the MacBook Pro, they mount and operate fine until I attempt to copy large files to them. Randomly, during large file transfer, the drive will suddenly disappear and I'll get the same error as if I had yanked out the USB cable without unmounting it.
    This is happening with:
    * A standard (Lacie) powered 500GB USB drive mounted normally.
    * A standard (Lacie) powered 500GB USB drive being used as a Time Machine disk (it errors/unmounts during Time Machine backups).
    * An iphone 8GB during itunes syncs, only when copying large files (like videos).
I have tried two USB hubs, one powered and one not, and both cause the same problems. If I connect any of these drives/iphone directly to the Mac then they work absolutely fine.
I first thought the (unpowered) USB hub was to blame, but when I started using the powered USB hub and saw the same problems I'm starting to wonder if OS X has a bug with regards to heavy I/O to USB devices connected through hubs...?
Davros: my tip would be to connect the drive directly to the computer (not via USB hub) and see if the problem goes away.

My laptop recently crashed and I was unable to get a backup of my music.
It was taken away and a new hard drive was put in, now it's fine.
Here's the problem. My music's still on my ipod, is there any way to get it back on my computer through the ipod?
If not is there at least a way I can put new music on the ipod without deleting the music I had on it before?

You may need many other updates to retain compatibility with Lion. I suggest you reinstall Snow Leopard. Unfortunately, you will need to erase the drive first. Be sure to backup your data if you haven't done so already.
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
with your computer.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
After the chime press and hold down the  "C" key.  Release the key when you see
a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
