I need some help. My hardisk died and I installed a new one. My music is fine in an external Hardisk, but I just install the new version of Itunes and I need to transfer
MY PLAYING LISTS to my Itunes... Not the music just the
Plying List.
Any answer will be greatly appreciated.

The sync is one way - computer to ipod. the exception is itunes purchases: File>Transfer Purchases
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just this occasion.

If you laptop was new and you downloaded iTunes from the Apple site, there should be no tracks in the library.
Anyway here are some ways of copying tracks from your iPod to your PC
Copy from iPod to PC
It is important not to allow your iPod to sync with an empty library. If it is set to synchronise automatically you will get a message saying your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to sync – it is important to press cancel as syncing with an empty library erases all music from your iPod.
You can also prevent auto sync by holding down shift & ctrl as you plug in your iPod and keeping the keys held down until the iPod appears in iTunes.
Once you are connected, you need to set your iPod to manage music manually.

Hi, I have bought a new computer with windows vista, I want to transfer all my music from my Ipod touch to Itunes libary, I am very new to Itunes....I have tried to show all hidden files as per a previous post but that doesn't work?? Can anybody please help?

How can I transfer from iPod (16GB) to new computer (Windows 7) without erasing iPod?

My old computer (Windows 7) died and I have a new computer (Windows 7). I had my iTunes library backed up, but I can't get it to work on my new computer. Is there a way to transfer what is on my iPod Touch (16 gb) to my new computer without losing it on the iPod?

Transfer from iPod to New Computer

I use my iPod to listen to recordings of lectures. I do the recording using a digital recorder, then download to the PC and import into iTunes then sync to iPod.
Recently my PC crashed and the hard disk is no longer recognized. I will have to buy a new hard disk and reinstall everything to get that PC up and running. It will take a long time.
I tried to sync from iPod to another PC to continue using the iPod but it won't let me. I got a message saying that everything in my iPod will be deleted if I use it with another PC.
I can understand the copyright issue for purchased music but I don't have any -- everything in my iPod is recording of lectures.
I looked for Apple Support but all their Support web site does is refer me to this forum.
Can someone suggest a way to transfer from iPod to a new PC? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. For purchased songs you can plug the iPod into you new computer and use the "File > Transfer Purchases from iPod" feature in iTunes. For music not purchased from the iTunes store you will need a third party program to help. There are a few of them out there, and they are easy to find on Google.

Downloaded latest version of iTunes to the new computer, then successfully transferred library content from the old computer to the new one via the external hard drive method. All material -- iTunes purchases, music ripped from CDs, a movie, even MP3 files purchased long ago from another source -- transferred successfully; everything plays on the new computer just fine.
My problem is that the "old" playlists didn't transfer over. After connecting my iPod Touch to the new computer, I verified that the iPod has the latest version of iOS, and its content (including the old/original playlists) displays in the window on the left-hand side of the iTunes screen. The really frustrating thing is that I can find no way to transfer the old playlists to my new iTunes library. I've tried dragging and dropping, selecting and pasting, and exploration of all the options menus, but no luck. Creating a new playlist in the new library and then clicking on the "Add To" button opens up a window into which to drop dragged songs/folders from the new library listing, but simultaneously closes the left-hand display window with all of my iPod's current playlists depicted.
I appear successfully to have backed up my iPod to the new computer, but all the sync menu options are grayed out. When I tried clicking on the Sync button, I got a warning that syncing to the new library would erase everything from the old library -- presumably obliterating my playlists with it. I have about a dozen different playlists, some of them with several hundred songs, drawn from a library of a few thousand individual items. I listen to something on my ipod. I plug the ipod into my computer. In itunes, on the ipod, I can see the track I listed to has number of plays 1. That track in the library on the computer fails to get any plays next to it. Why? Why does this stuff never really work properly? I'm sure it used to work, but I could be wrong. It's not working now. Plays on/from the ipod don't get registered on the computer. This means I don't know which tracks I've listed to and which I haven't. Great.

Automatic sync of an iPod is supposed to sync the play counts back from the device to your iTunes library. Unfortunately the capability is unreliable and always has been.
Here is a thread on the topic from 2009.
I have found two things that help: try to do the sync shortly after you have rebooted your machine, and every once in a while do a Restore on the iPod. These help, but do not give you complete accuracy, and needless to add, are both a lot of trouble.
Maybe others here have additional ideas.

I still use my iPod 30gb Classic from 2005 but the computer with which I made the syncs is broken and I got myself a new one. How it was originally designed by Apple is you store your music in iTunes on a Mac or a PC. you back up your computer. you add to your library through the computer. you then sync to ipod classic. it was never intended to move music back the other way unless you purchased the music from iTunes store.
If your compuetr breaks you restore iTunes library from computer backup.
in many cases music is reduced in size and quality to 128kbps on sync so backwards sync would lose library quality.
finally, it avoids people illegally sharing music, or stealing music from lost or stolen ipods.
to backwards sync you will need to either get into the risky business of third party software, or find a PC running Linux and Rhythmbox and ask again. I probably said too much.
