New HD and New Wireless Configuration - Input?

The hard drive on our iMac needs to be replaced so as I'm figuring out what to get and how big, etc. I'm seeking input.
Here's what we have:
Intel-based iMac 17" (the one needing the new HD)
MacBook
1TB Time Capsule base station with DSL connection
AirPort Extreme to extend our wireless network and with the following connected to it:
- Sharp internet-enabled TV
- DirecTV (soon to be torpedoed for Uverse I think)
- Sharp internet-enabled Blue Ray player
- 2G Apple TV (the new tiny one without the HD)
We'll eventually replace the iMac with a bigger one and hand the 17" down to the kids. In the meantime, because we're not incredibly happy with the Apple TV's performance (I just got it for my wife for Christmas) I'm thinking about switching some things around like so:
- Get a 2TB HD for the iMac and point the Time Machine backups of the iMac and MacBook to a separate 1 or 1.5TB partition on the new HD.
- Swap the AirPort and Time Capsule so the AirPort is now our base station
- Move our iTunes music and movies to the Time Capsule it could become a media server and connect all of the A/V stuff to it
Is there a compelling reason to back up to an external drive or is the separate partition ok? Will Apple TV perform better if it's connected (via ethernet cable of course) directly to the disk that the media is stored on? Any other pitfalls or land mines I'm not seeing?

If you mean to connect the drive to your Airport, don't. Backing-up that way is not reliable and +*not supported by Apple.+ See [Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Airport.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
A better solution would be to back the iMac up to one directrly-connected disk (or partition); and back the MacBook up to a separate partition on the same disk, or separate disk, connected to the iMac. See #22 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum), for setup instructions.
I wasn't planning on attaching a drive to the AirPort. I was going to get a big internal drive and partition off a piece of it for the backup. Then I was going to use our Time Capsule as a media server, extension for our wireless network, and switch for our TV, Apple TV, etc.

  • Backing up and restoring wireless configurations

I am getting ready to blow away my iBook and do a fresh install of OS X. I use my iBook in a variety of different areas and have it setup on several WEP and WPA protected networks. Basically, I'd like to be able to backup my wireless configurations and restore them once I reinstall the OS.

I would assume it's the com.apple.airport.plist in you user Library>Preferences folder (network locations/preferences are user specific). Drag it to the desktop and restart Airport. Are your various locations there? No? Then that's it.

  • Firefow will not open at all on one computer and on the other it opens but will not load. I just added a new wireless router, could this have anything to do with it, it had been working fine up until I installed it Tuesday night. Internet explorer won't

I installed a new wireless router on Tues. (May4) up until that time I had no problems using Firefox. Now I cannot get it to open on one computer, and the other it will open but will not load. Wondering if it has anything to do with the router, my provider or our computers. Again, it had been working fine. I am also unable to open interent explorer now on either computer.

Sounds like a problem with the router installation/configuration (likely) or a DOA router (very unlikely).
Visit the forums for the router manufacturer (i.e., linksys, d-link, etc.) and ask for assistance there. There is probably a link to help listed in the router manual.

  • I have problem setting up a new wireless keyboard and my new Mac mini

I have problem setting up a new wireless keyboard and my new Mac mini

Same with my new mac mini.
Got it brand new via the online shop.
Happy to start with the new mac i really got dissapointed by the fact that it`s impossible to pair the wireless keyboard unless you first connect a USB keyboard to the mac mini and start the configuration.
    THIS S.U.C.K.S. !!!
No hint at all from apple that you first have to connect the USB keyboard.
I had to borrowed a USB keyboard from my neighbour :-((
After setting things up it was no problem at all to establish the BT connection with the keyboard.
    Works fine now.

  • I downloaded and installed TB and it pre-configured my wife's mailbox instead of setting up a new one for me. Whats up with that?

I downloaded and installed TB and it pre-configured my wife's mailbox instead of setting up a new one for me.
The first time I ran it, there was her mailbox and all the msg's. I didn't input anything for a server, login or password. IOt just came up configured for her mailbox! Did it do that from the IP address or what?

I would guess that Thunderbird has been installed previously and it has simply rediscovered an old profile folder.

  • My new iMac has recently had OSX Lion installed on it and now when I start the machine it looks like its updating something every time, and the wireless doesn't work. So I restart and everything is OK - until I have to start up again the next time?

My new iMac has recently had OSX Lion installed on it and now when I start the machine it looks like its updating something every time, and the wireless doesn't work. So I restart and everything is OK - until I have to start up again the next time - then I have to repeat this again! Any help appreciated.

I've been having the same issue, but have just discovered something on my own that hasn't been pointed out in any of the forums I've visited.  In what I thought would be a vain attempt to help myself, I went to System Preferences, Users & Groups, and then clicked on Login Items.  I discovered that one of the Items that was listed to open automatically upon login was iTunes Helper and that there was an exclamation point beside it indicating that it was incompatible.  I simply deleted that item and now I don't have the situation you described and my wireless is connected.  Hope this helps!

  • HT1178 Do I want to create a new wireless network or join my current network?  I can't connect an ethernet cable to the Mac / printer and to the wireless modem at same time - in two different rooms.

I am trying to set up Time Capsule so that I can do my first backup (after 1 1/2 years!) with Time Machine.  I have read other forums, but in each case they instructions eventually do not apply.
I have connected my TC to my existing wireless router.  This sits in a bedroom and cannot be moved as a rental home.
I have plugged in the TC and updated the software.
Now - do I want to A Create a New Wireless Network (remember I can't connect the TC to Mac using an Ethernet cable). B Replace an existing base station or wireless router with TC (only intend to use for TM as don't know other benefits as of yet). or C want TC to join current network.
Thinking C.  If I choose C, it then asks A TC to wireless join current network (NO as already connected using Ethernet). B want to connect TC to my network using Ethernet to extend my existing wireless network. C want to disable the wireless network on this TC and connect it to my computer or network using Ethernet - CANNOT do this as devices can not be in the same room.
Or do I want to create new wireless network - first set of questions - choice A?  What is the benefit to creating a new one when I won't be in this rental house for longer than 18 more months??
    Please help and quickly!  Thanks!

    Let me suggest some things.
But first ask exactly what wireless router you have now and what type of broadband service?
Are you happy with the wireless on the current router? If so, then you can plug the TC straight into whatever computer you have by ethernet, short 1M cord with no connection to the network. And use it without affecting your existing network at all. This is trivial setup.
Although you don't say exactly what Mac and printer you are using, is it a desktop? Laptop it is definitely easier not to plug it in, but a desktop you can plug in the TC and it will all sit happily together.
How is the printer connected and to what?
I am not sure why you need such quick help.. this is all minor setup stuff.. and 18months in todays world is like permanent man.
Your multiple A, B, C are more confusing than helpful.
The best choices without more info.. are to replace the existing wireless router with the TC. ie your option B.. but how to do this depends on the type of connection. Is it cable or adsl? Can you easily bridge the existing modem router.. if that is what it is?
Think carefully in the ideal world what would you like..
    and what do you have..
We can probably suggest ways and means to fit what you like to what you have.. without introducing a stack of options that are doing your head in.

  • I have a new wireless router and now my laptop will not recognize the printer.

I recently installed a new wireless router,Linksys E2500, and now my laptop will not connect to my OfficeJet 4500 wireless printer.  Operating system is Windows XP.  Says it does not recognize the printer.  It was working fine with my other Linksys router and I have been able to connect all of my other electronic equipment.  Thanks.

You must reinstall the full feature software and drivers again to be sure it will work with the new router.  This is the fastest way.  Simply follow the instructions that came with the printer.

  • MacBook Pro and Time Capsule after adding new wireless router

I have a MacBook Pro and Time Capsule (which functions wirelessly to router and computer). I added a new wireless router (netgear, not my idea) and had to change name of wireless network. Now Time Capsule flashes amber and does not show up in Airport Utility.
Do I have to set up Time Capsule from scratch? If so, if you can aim me to directions I won't have to waste tech support's time.
My additional question on a similar vein: I also have a Time Capsule (second time capsule) which is plugged into the wireless router using ethernet cable for use with a windows notebook running windows 7 which backs up wirelessly. Do I have to change anything on this Time Capsule (second Time Capsule) as a result of change in name of network (I've already adjusted computer to connect to network)?

    Hi DD,
If you don't get answers here, try posting in the Time Capsule forum (http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1253) and/or the Time Machine forum (http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1342).

I just purchased my first iPad (the new one) and a wireless keyboard. Is there a keyboard usage manual available anywhere that shows the functions of the keys? The info that came with the keyboard was very basic and my searches have been unsuccessful.

If you are using a Bluetooth keyboard on your iPad device, you should take advantage of the keyboard shortcuts for quicker access to copy, cut, paste, undo, redo, and other commands.
    Command + C : Copy Selected Text
    Command + V : Paste
Command + X: Cut Selected Text
    Command + Z: Undo
    Command + Shift + Z: Redo
Command + Delete: Delete everything to the left of the cursor on the current line
Option + Delete: Delete the word to the left of the cursor
Command + Up Arrow: Go to top of document
Command + Down Arrow: Go to bottom of document
Command + Left Arrow: Go to beginning of current line
Command + Right Arrow: Go to end of current line
    F1: Dim screen
    F2: Brighten screen
    F7: Back one song
    F8: Play/pause song
    F9: Skip song
    F10: Mute
    F11: Decrease volume
    F12: Increase volume
Eject button: Show or hide onscreen keyboard

  • Is it possible to disable Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz and only use 5 GHz for testing new wireless installations? (Lion, MBP Mid 2010)

    Hi,
I already read that it was not possible to switch off either 2.4ghz or 5ghz radio in the year 2009. Is it in the meantime possible? I would like to test some new wireless installations on Co-channel interference.

AHT on the disks is unreliable and can't be updated to match firmware and drivers changes in OS X updates, so don't even bother with it.
If your Mac is a more recent model, you can boot the machine while holding the D key down until something appears on the screen, but you have to be near your Wifi or on Ethernet connection to the router/modem as AHT is downloaded from Apple's servers.
If your machine is having a problem, take it to a Apple Authroized Repair or Store and they will hook it up to their diagnostic machine for free.
    No problem.
And you can install as many OS X versions on one machine as you like, as long as it's a Mac.
OS X 10.5 is obsolete and insecure, OS X 10.6 and later are getting security updates.
OS X 10.6 has Rosetta and will run your PPC based programs of 10.5.
OS X 10.7 and later version will not run Rosetta or PPC code, unless you install OS X 10.6 Server (it's legal) into a virtual machine program.
Download the free MacTracker and it can tell you everything about your particular model of Mac and what operating systems it will run.

  • HT1365 just installed a new wireless router (cisco linkseys E1200) and our apple laptops connect fine on one floor but lose connectivity when moved to another.  Other non apple laptops & Ipad connect with no problem no matter what floor they are on

We just installed a new wireless router to our main PC.  It's a Cisco Linkseys E1200.  All other wireless devices were able to connect without a problem, including my Ipad.  We have 2 Macbook Pro laptops.  They both connect just fine when on the same floor of our house as the router, but when we take them upstairs to the 2nd floor of the house, they lose connectivity and it states the wireless password is not the correct password.  All other 2nd floor laptops have no problem at all with connectivity no matter where they are in the house.  Please help- my husband is on the verge of selling Apple if that cannot be remedied.

This would not be a security issue symptom. I would consider checking for sources of wireless interference HT1365

  • HT4356 I got a new wireless modem. The HP 8600 no longer works and is not seen as an airport printer. The diagnostics on the printer say it is connected to the wireless.

Suddenly no wireless printing works. The printer is a HP 8600e and the wireless is turned on and the printer itself can connect to the network, but OSX no longer sees it as an airport printer and nothing prints. I've tried all the Apple support docs without success.

An old addage of troubleshooting is "First, fix what you most recently changed."
All the driver uninstall etc, was probably unnecessary.
Power cycle the router (wireless modem).
    Power cycle the printer.
Now check that the printer is in the local subnet of the router.
(local subnet means router is something like 192.168.1.1, your computer is something like 192.168.1.2, and the printer is something like 192.168.1.3 - only the last part - 192.168.1.x - is allowed to be different).
Add the printer using the default printer browser window.
If this doesn't work, Reset Printing system and re-add.
