New HD and Partitioning with Power Mac G4 AGP (400)
I have not found anyone mentioning the ability to boot in either OSX or OS9 after upgrading a hard drive.
I want to keep that option for awhile longer, but it is necessary to have more than a mere 10G HD.
Before I purchase a new drive, I would like to know if there are any issues regarding the choice to boot in either OS following the upgrade. I am sorry if it is a silly question, but I don't understand what makes this possible in the first place...

Hello! Upgrading your hard drive a has nothing to do with booting into an OS. If your computer can boot into OS9 now it can do it after an upgrade. If you have a 10 gig or so drive running OS9 and you want to go to X I'd suggest that you leave the OS9 drive as is and but a new 120 gig 7200 rpm drive as a secondary drive and put the OSX OS on it. If the machine is currently running OS9 then you'll likely have to do a firmware upgrade before installing OSX on the G-4. You'll have to be booted into OS9 to do the firmware upgrade. Leaving the current drive you have now as OS9 will give you the ability to run in OS9 if need be. Your machine will only see a 120 gig drive without adding another pci card so I wouldn't buy anything larger. As for partitioning think of it as a filing cabinet with two drawers. Each drawer is separate from the other but it's still one cabinet. The hard drive can be "partitioned" into two drawers or "volumes" to be kept totally separate from each other. And by the way adding another gig or so of ram and a 1.2 ghz or faster processor will have the old G-4 smokin' once again. Tom

i boot into the 10.4 install dvd about 1/5 th into the install it says please try installing agian.
when i restart without the disk in it shows the flashing no os floder.about 5 seconds after that it shows the white screen with the can't boot icon.

Is your install DVD black or gray? A black installer is a retail version that you need. A gray installer is Mac model specific & will only work on the Mac that it came with.

Networking imac with powe mac 604e - ethenet?
Hi i have an older power mac 604e computer
and i want to network it with a new
imac. Im trying to get my old files transferred onto my new computer. The old power mac has an old fashion scii connection and it does not have usb nor firewire so i thought the ethernet connection would be the best way.
this is just a one time transfer of data and i already have an ethernet cable. How do i set this up?

stevenThe 604e computer has to be running Mac OS 9 or OS X to be able to talk to your iMac running Tiger. You can try to connect the two computers via an ethernet cable and then configure things as follows here:

That page indicates that you can also get this to work with system 8.5 and 8.6 but I found those systems to drop connections alot. It may work without a crossover cable if the autosensing features of the ethernet ports work correctly. Lastly if you have an ethernet hub you can use that (with regular cables) instead of a crossover cable. Good luck and keep an eye on things as you may get drops anyway!

I am connected to wi-fi through TC connected to a specific router and is working perfectly and saving data through TM without any issues.
The TC version is 7.6.1 and am using OS 10.7.3
The router mode is on Bridge mode and router is connected to TC through USB cable, I suppose for internet access. My Mac is on wi-fi through TC
I have another location, much further, which recently have been installed with wi-fi through router that has WPA accessibiulity with password, 100% different than the current one.
Since, I will be most of my time in this new location, I wish to move my TC to this new location, and configure it in similar fashion like what I am having right now.
Naturally, I do not wish to lose any saved data on the TC.

I think if you use the start-command, the execution is asynchronously and you won't get the correct process-id. Try to execute Acorbat directly without the cmd /c start in front of it.

My wife has a new Ipad and Iphone with icloud. We also have a Imac that has not been upgraded yet that is somehow syncing with her ipad and screwing up the apps. Is there anyway to prevent this. Maybe it is thru mobilme?
I think iCloud isn't coming until this fall and not until iOS 5 is publicly available. Right now there is confusion because all this stuff is still in beta and things are under NDA and may still change.
I'd just set the 3GS up the same as currently. When iOS 5 is available in the fall (and I don't think Apple has specified beyond "fall"), before you update, there should be any number of guides to setting things up and how it will all work. http://macworld.com is a good place to look for such information. -

Your Windows system will not open any Pages, Numbers or Keynote documents. No applications exist for Windows that can open those formats. You will need to export your documents in Word, Excel and PowerPoint formats, respectively, before you'll be able to view and edit the documents on your Windows system. The iWork documents can natively open Word, Excel and PP documents, though there are limitations on what can be imported (for instance, Numbers does not support all possible Excel functions). Consult the documentation for the relevant iWork application for details on importing and exporting.
If you are asking how to get the documents from one system to the other, then there are several ways to do that, including file sharing, using an external drive (hard drive, USB flash drive), or emailing the documents to yourself. Which would be best for your situation I can't say without more details about your usage.

Software and OS upgrades have always helped market new hardware.
Number one: I don't come anywhere near 100 percent cpu usage at all when I am using my MDD. Though, I don't use Apple's complex software, once in a blue moon I will burn DVD's or CD's, but this is fast enough for me.
Secondly: You have owned an MDD far longer than I have. I just recently got this MDD which is a 2003 dual 1.25 - the VERY VERY last one before the G5 came out. I am happy with this machine as it is doing everything that my digital audio did, but faster. I don't need windows, though if emulation of TI-99/4A, MAME, and MESS become a problem, I might consider a MAC MINI alongside my MDD. I am in no way shape of form going to get rid of the G4. Plus, I have so much fun with the powerpc processor and its capabilities. I know, the bus speed is 167, but consider this. I came from a digital audio to this MDD and it only cost me 400 dollars on craigslist. The condition:
Brand spanking new! The owner told me he had never had any problems with it. No over heating problems, nothing! The only problem I had with it was a bad front panel board - but thats all in the past.
True, I personally wouldn't plunk down any more money as far as CPU upgrades go since the 1.8 and 1.6 duals don't offer L3 cache. If anything, I would get at low price a 1.42 board to put in this machine and make it dual 1.42, though 10 percent increase is really miniscule.
Which brings me to the next point - of course, upgrading a Beige, Yosemite was a waste of money because for what those systems were worth they ran on a G3 processor. But, we are talking about a dual 1.25/1.42 MDD, not G3.
I do like the Intel macs, though from what you heard about me spewing hatred towards them and the architecture, I was just plainly upset that day for no reason and decided to take it out on others. For that, I am deeply sorry. However, I plan to get a Mac intel mini to be networked alongside my MDD. I just realized that really for what I use my MAC for, I wouldn't need a mac pro or anything remotely expensive, given right now that I am just starting a new job in a few weeks.
Finally, I am still at odds of whether to upgrade to Leopard, since most of my software is all tiger oriented. I originally had Panther 2 years ago and I was hesitant about going to Tiger, but I did and I am glad I did since I see the performance it is giving me.
So, the MDD is not a bad machine and really isn't as slow as one would think - at least for what I use my system for. Explain to me why you are getting 100 percent cpu on yours?
