New HD can't be mounted

Have a 1TB Maxtor HD i've been using as a secondary then the other day a message came up upon booting up, stating it couldn't read the HD and I had options of "initialize, ignore or eject. It shows up in disc utility but all options are greyed out. Tried switching bays but with no luck.

Rebooting the AEBS was decidedly helpful. I do have an alias of the hard drive on the desktop now, but as described above it's still grayed out...maybe it's supposed to be for all I know.
In any case, thanks for the good advice.
