New HD in MBP (2009)

Hi Guys,
Was having some issues with my MBP (programs shutting down / crashing) so I decided to buy a new 750gb HD and install Mavericks.
Once I installed the new drive, and got to the desktop, the system started restarting itself... repeatedly! I would get the message: "The system had to restart, please press any key to continue" (along those lines).
I've taken the new drive back out, made sure it was a fresh install and have also checked the drive with Drive Genius, all of which returned no errors with the drive itself.
I managed to get the log from Console before the last crash. Can anyone help please?

Hi Ravi Rai,
I'm sorry to hear about the issue you are having with your Mac. If you are having hard freezes or restart issue that don't appear to be drive related, even after reinstalling Mavericks, you may want to try the troubleshooting steps outlined in the following article:
OS X: When your computer spontaneously restarts or displays "Your computer restarted because of a problem."

  • New owner of MBP, why can't you turn off the keyboard backlight in Win 7?

I'm a new owner of MBP. I have Windows 7 64bits installed on bootcamp. The keyboard backlight is really bothering me. I thought Boot Camp was out for awhile, and I don't know why can't Apple fix this backlight control thing? I downloaded that power assistant software and I liked it; however, I was turned off that it wasn't a freeware. What can I do to turn this backlight off permanently?

Well... seems like pre-2010 MBPs all had 'non-disablable' keyboard backlights on Windows. Installing BC 3.1 won't help at all. You could temporary minimize backlight level, but not turn it off. And on just any ambient light change it jumps back to maximum. Extremely erratic
A friend of mine got a 2010 MBP and he's able to turn backlight off. I've got mid-2009 model with BC 3.1, and I can't. My another friend has late-2008 model, he can't turn the backlight off, either.
I agree, ideally powerplan7 should have been a freeware. However, although I did spend $10 on a key, I'm oh-so-happy right now. With backlight disabled And since there are no alternatives AT ALL, I'm glad they're not selling this software for, say, $25.

  • Shutdown Stall - diskarbitration on MBP 2009

    Hi, everyone
    I own a 15'' Macbook Pro 2.66 GHz mid-2009 (MacBookPro5,3) with 8GB RAM and 640GB HDD. I'm running Lion 10.7.2
Since I installed Lion my boot time has increased significantly, but it seems everyone experienced it. There were some issues that I managed to solve by removing some old apps and drivers that were sitting in my computer since Snow Leopard. I even did a fresh install of Lion just to conclude that the startup time is only short if the HDD is empty and goes back to around 1 minute when all my documents and files are back in place.
But lately it's been acting quite awkwardly. I'm now downloading EFI and SMC updates to try it out, but since these are stability fixes for the newer versions of MBP I don't think they'll help at all.
I continuously have "shutdownstall", and I can find the log files in Library/Logs/Diagnosis  (this is the name of one of the files, just for your reference:  diskarbitrationd,pcscd,sh,sleep,SystemStarter_2011-11-24-205832_localhost.shutd ownStall)
It seems like diskarbitration is causing the stalls. I ran a bunch of searches on Google and came up with nothing but the definition of diskarbitration and how to turn it off (though I don't want it to be off).
Does anyone have any idea about what's going on? Is anyone experiencing the same issue?
When I first jumped into Lion it was HP I-O Trap Monitor which was causing the shutdownstalls, but that has long been solved.
I'm curious. Is there any way my diagnosis log files can be sent to Apple to be looked at?

I have none of those applications. I tried seeing when was the first stall report generated. It was on Nov-8.
Then I tried sorting the applictions by date (point Finder to MacintoshHD/Applications) and see which one was installed/created/modified around that date... and nothing.
I have no idea what's causing it. It drives me nuts to have a mac giving me windows-like issues.
I opened one of the shutdownstall log files with the text editor and the information inside is completely alien to me. That's why I'd like to know if anyone from Apple does read these forums and can give us users some assistance. After all, I think that is the point of having an automatically generated error report.
This is a transcription of the first few lines of the error log:
    Date/Time:       2011-11-08 22:16:49 +0000
    OS Version:      10.7.2 (Build 11C74)
    Architecture:    x86_64
    Report Version:  9
    Command:         No Target
    Path:            No Target
    Version:         ??? (???)
    Parent:          kernel_task [0]
    PID:             0
    Event:           shutdown stall
    Duration:        8.66s
    Steps:           87 (100ms sampling interval)
    Pageins:         5
    Pageouts:        0
    Process:         diskarbitrationd [15]
    Path:            /usr/sbin/diskarbitrationd
    Architecture:    x86_64
    UID:             0"
It may sound ridiculous that I'm complaining of an 8.66 second delay in the shutdown, but the point is that something is wrong with diskarbitration, mdsnresponder and something else. And I can't fix it.
    Any ideas?

  • MBP 2009 17'' - frustration :( :( :(

I bought an MBP 2009 17'' at apple premium reseller store in Russia, september 2009.
2 months later I discovered that my Nvidia 9600 GPU is out of order and can not playback DVD films or work with Safari and YouTube continuously.
I took it to certified Apple service centre, they had it unassembled and waiting for a replacement motherboard shipment since that time. 3 Months passed and the equipment has not arrived yet all due to massive Russia's customs problems.
I realize that my MAC which cost me over 5000 USD here is 'aging' and getting outpaced by new technologies and I can't get it to work.
There is nothing positive with 'BAD quality' assembly standards employed by Apple factories with this 2009-2010 Macintosh product line.
Every other Mac's 2009 video adapter fails.
My question is, can I get money back should the service centre postpone repairs any longer?

This is a user to user forum. This is not Apple. Call AppleCare in your country.

  • MBP 2009 Mavericks battery issues

So I've 'upgraded' to Mavericks on my MBP 2009 and since im eating 1% battery every minute with anything and everything flagging as using too much battery.
I would like to keep Mavericks but I have tried the things ive found which were supposed to fix this issue like SMC reset and NVRAM reset. Any other ideas before i give up and go back to Leopard, which whilst not amazing for battery, would normally serve me 4hours ish, im currently working on about a hour and half max! killing my laptop use now!
    Thanks

The information you paste from System Profiler indicates a capacity of way above 2%, pddrome. 4831mAh is more like 86% of original capacity (around 5500-5600 mAH) for a 15" MBP 3.1. It doesn't look like a "failed" battery at all, but one that's pretty normal after 100 cycles or so.
I'd be wondering whether something else is going on here. Maybe a problem with your system management system or the like that is giving you "false" readings, or perhaps even dirty battery contacts or some such giving erratic results.
Just by the way, a Li polymer battery left unused will deteriorate over time anyway. You would probably be better off swapping the two batteries every few days to maximise their lifespan, rather than using one heavily and one very intermittently.
But the SP info you provide doesn't suggest that your battery is dying. I'd be wondering about other issues with charging or system management generally.
EDIT - I think I can see where your mistake is. You are comparing the actual amperage figure (second bottom in the column) with the total present capacity, rather than the total present capacity with the original capacity.
Not surprising it jumps around if this is the case! The amperage figure depends totally on the current rate of power usage at the time when you run system profiler. It doesn't tell you anything about battery condition. Fire up a processor or disk intensive program and it will go screaming up if you run SP again. Shut everything down apart from SP and it will drop, etc etc.
Sounds to me that with your new order you will soon probably have 4 good batteries to keep on swapping around!
    Cheers
    Rod

  • New 2.4GHz MBP in "lid closed mode" wakes up automatically

    Hi,
I got one of the new 2.4Ghz MBPs, had a first gen 2.16Ghz MBP before. I have external mouse, keyboard and display attached and use it with the lid closed. When I sent my older MBP to sleep it would take a few seconds before the display went dark. Then I turned of the power outlet and the MBP kept sleeping.
With the new MBP I have to power off during the time the display is still on or otherwise the MBP will immediately wake up as soon as I turn off power. Then it will take a few seconds for it to "realize" that I did not intend to wake it (i.e. the lid is still closed, no external display, no power supply) and will finally go to sleep.
    2 Questions:
    - Is it bad (for the display or the MBP) to power off at the time the Cinema Display is still active?
    - Can I somehow regain the sleep behaviour of my old MBP?
    Thanks a lot!
    Björn

  • Maverick draining battery after upgrade MBP 2009

I upgraded my MBP 2009 2.8 GHZ intel core 2 duo to Maverick, before upgrading the battery life was around 5-6 hours now the battery
level drops quickly and I only get around 2 hours battery life.
I have reset the SMC as per this web site and performed a permissions fix and verify disk (no issues) and have waited a week now for spotlight to do its thing
    but still the same issue.
I have notice that the bottom on the notebook gets hot as if running an intensive app but no apps are using significant power.
It is as if I have switch the graphics to high performance but the energy saver setting say better battery life.
This issue may have started after I switched the graphics to high performance and after setting this back to better battery life I noticed that after logging out
this setting reverted to graphics high performance.
could the graphics still be in performance mode but indicating better battery life?

Nothing obvious here, but better get rid of that remnant of CleanMyMac2. Also check if all software with kernel extensions, launch agents and launch daemons is still necessary and up to date (if not uninstall or update).

  • New 15-inch MBP (2008 MPB) battery drained to 84% in 15 mins. Help.

Hi there! I just popped in a brand new 15-inch MBP (square) battery into my 2008 MBP with Lion 10.7.4. It has drained to 84% in about 15 mintues. Is it a defective battery or a problem with caliberation? Thanks!!!

Calibrate it, and then you'll find out whether the problem is/was with the battery or its calibration.

  • Will a full backup from a 2009 13" MacBook Pro work on a new 2010 13" MBP?

My mid-2009 13" MacBook Pro is running 10.6.4 and is fully backed up using SuperDuper to an external bootable firewire drive.
I just received my new mid-2010 13" MacBook Pro, which is virtually identical except for slight CPU speed increase and bigger hard disk.
To save hours of install time, can I simply reverse the backup from the 2009 MBP into the new 2010 MBP?
In a simpler form, the question is really this: is MacOS 10.6.4 any different on the 2010 MBP over the mid-2009 MBP?

    Hi Steve M;
Instead of restoring the backup, I would suggest that connect the two together in Target Disk Mode and do a Migration Assistant.

  • Installed new HD on Mid-2009 MBP, installed Mavericks, now getting "error code -50" after being on for a while.

So I had the stock 320gb drive that came with my machine. It started crashing, so I pre-empted the loss of data and installed a spare Western Digital 500gb Scorpio Blue drive, installed Mavericks, and restored my data. Almost immediately I began having sporadic issues with the machine being unable to write to the disk, giving me "error code -50" after being on for about a day or so. I usually just restart and it will work for another day or so, but this is getting very tedious, and I'm a bit worried it might be straining the machine, since I can only hard restart (holding power button) when this happens. Usually, right after restarting, I repair the disk permissions, and this seems to fix things.
Is this maybe a bad OS install? Maybe I should back up and try it all again? Or is there a software issue I'm not seeing a solution for anywhere? Most people who are getting the "error code -50" messages seem to be getting them on external drives. Is it just a compatibility issue and I need to seek a new drive?

    Thank you for the tips!

Even though I read about it I had not touched any SMS settings in OS X since I did not have any problems before. I disabled SMS in Mac, let's see now.

    Reteep,
you could try the same thing as well.
In my case I doubt it is the problem because it worked fine before Mavericks, although forcing restart may have done something. I hope disabling SMS helped.

  • Help me bring new life to Mid 2009 Macbook Pro

    Hello,
I have a mid 2009 15" Macbook Pro, 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo, 2x 2g 1067 MHz DDR3 memory, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, 320G HD w/ rotational rate of 5400.  I purchased the computer back in 2009 and it's beginning to show it's age.  I have read this entire thread here (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4141610?start=30&tstart=0) and heard many claims of read/write speeds after installing an SSD, although none of them include what the speeds were with there original (spinning type) HD.
    My computer needs:
I am currently in my 4th year as an electrical engineering student, so I use the computer for tasks such as Matlab, analyzing and plotting the output of an analog to digital converter (sometimes resulting in 3-4 thousand data points to be plotted at once), and general report typing.  I may one day soon begin running parallel desktops as I often use a program called Multisim that is only available on Windows.  The machine is also my personal computer and contains an itunes library consisting of ~2k songs, many of which have uncompressed bit rates (Im a sq car audio guy).  Im currently using ~250G of my 320G HD.
    The point:
I can't afford a whole new computer right now and also may end up receiving one in the near future from an employer.  With that being said I would like to upgrade some of the components of my existing laptop, as I have plenty of room for expansion.  What I see as my best options are as follows, in order of preference:
    (1) Upgrade to a SSD.  I would like to do this to bring back some of the responsiveness to my machine.  I also favor this option because I'm beginning to reach capacity on my current HD.  In the thread I linked I learned some people favor putting a 128-256G SSD in their optical drive, and leaving the HD untouched.  I would be in favor of just replacing the entire current hard drive with a 512G or larger SSD, to keep the optical drive functional.
    - is the smaller SSD in the optical bay a more cost effective solution?
    - what drives are recommended/ not recommended? In the other thread guys spoke of having trouble with certain brands, but assuming the drive doesnt physically break isnt memory just memory?
    - will I need any other components to transfer my current HD data to the new SSD? (I like the idea of a fresh OS install afterwards)
    - where could I find a walk through on how to install new SSD/transfer HD files/install fresh OS?
    serial-ATA specs:
    NVidia MCP79 AHCI:
      Vendor:          NVidia
      Product:          MCP79 AHCI
      Link Speed:          3 Gigabit
      Negotiated Link Speed:          1.5 Gigabit
      Description:          AHCI Version 1.20 Supported
    (2) Upgrade the memory.  Im hoping this will remove the pinwheel I get when performing calculations/plotting large data sets in Numbers.  I would replace the current two 2G memory sticks with two matching 4G sticks for a total (and I believe max) of 8G memory.  I believe any DDR3 1067MHz sticks would work, but correct me if Im wrong.
    - is any brand recommended or not recommended?
    - Swapping memory is as simple as powering down the machine, popping the old out, popping the new in right?
For either upgrade I would most likely be going with after market brands, as I just dont see Apple parts as cost effective, unless it is recommened I stick with Apple products.
-I realize that both of these options will result in improved performance, but what I ask is is it worth the money (and potential headaches) to upgrade?
-If the performance of my machine were a chain, what do you feel is my weakest link? I feel the SSD will result in a larger overall performance improvement but currently the 4G of memory is my weakest link and the most cost effective of the two options.
-With the parts of my chain that cannot be upgraded, such as the processor, serial-ATA, are any of these upgrades worth it?
Sorry for the long post, but I hope I was complete in describing my current situation.  Please advise me and thank you to anyone kind enough to read this and shed some light.
    Cheers, Matt

    (1) Don't put a SSD in your optical bay if you're going to use it as a boot drive. MacBook Pros assume that the boot drive is going to be in the hard drive bay and you're just asking for trouble if you put the SSD in the optical bay. See my (long overdue for an edit) user tip -> Upgrading your MacBook Pro with a Solid State Drive. It should answer some of your questions.
    (2) Most of us around here recommend Crucial or OWC RAM. You are correct in saying that your machine can utilize up to 8GB of 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMMs. Visit the Crucial website and, under the System Scanner tab, download a small zipped app that, when run, will report your model back to Crucial and you'll be offered potential upgrade paths.
Is it worth it? You might run into a SATA cable problem with the SSD when you install it as mid-2009 MBPs are notorious for having faulty SATA cables - but that's of little concern in determining if the upgrade is worth it. The only two parts of your machine that are upgradeable are the drive and RAM and you'll certainly notice a difference in performance. But, in the end, only you can determine how much longer you're going to use your machine and if you'll get a good ROI.
Good luck - I know that I haven't helped you with all your questions, but it's a start...

  • MBP 2009: Audio over Mini DisplayPort

    Hello
    I previously ordered a Mini DisplayPort -> HDMI cable (http://www.amazon.co.uk/1-8m-DisplayPort-Adapter-Unibody-MacBook/dp/B003WVC8R2/r ef=sr1_fkmr01?ie=UTF8&m=A1T39SA8AUFT6J&qid=1289477962&sr=1-1-fkmr0).
It's been working great with my 2009 model MacBook Pro, however I have to use a separate cable for audio.
When in the Apple Store recently to fix a battery problem on that laptop, I got into a discussion about audio through HDMI on this model. According to the Mac Genius audio through Mini DisplayPort was enabled on older devices through a firmware update (and he said his Mac Mini now uses one cable to do audio and video).
Audio is not working with the cable above - but was I incorrectly informed by Mac Genius, or do I need a different cable that does support audio?
    Thanks
    Jamie

All we know about your MacBook Pro model is that you've identified it as a "2009 model MacBook Pro." Apple introduced audio-out via mini-displayport in the April 2010 MBP models, so if yours was bought before then, it didn't have that capability when it was new. To the best of my knowledge and belief, nothing that has happened or been released since then has changed that.
[This article|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241], updated in June 2010 (after the release of the latest mac Mini), lists the Mac models that supported audio via mini-Displayport at that time:
"iMac (Late 2009), MacBook Pro (Mid 2010), MacBook (Mid 2010), and Mac mini (Mid 2010) supply multichannel audio (up to 8 channels) and video signals over Mini DisplayPort."
I haven't heard of any update that has changed that list since then. If it were possible to enable audio output by means of a firmware update, I think Apple would have made that update available to all owners of mini-Displayport-equipped Macs, not just some of them.

  • Connecting MBP 2009 to Samsung syncmaster F2080

    Hi Guys,
    I have a 2009 MBP 13" that I want to connect to a Samsung Syncmaster F2080.
Do I need a mini display port to DVI or something else?
    Thanks

Another possibility might have something to do with video DRM in the form of HDCP. Your new Mac supports HDCP. Your TV may not since it pre-dates HDMI. The Mac may be seeing a TV (from the TV's EDID) and trying to perform an HDCP handshake, which the TV may be incapable of performing. If that is what's happening, your options for overcoming the issue narrow rapidly.

  • Cannot partition, erase, format or restore (OS X Lion, MBP 2009)

    Hi!
I have a 2009 MacBook Pro 13" (2.53 / 4GB / 250GB / Lion) that stalled on the grey screen + spinning wheel a few months ago. I was able to recover my data and load it onto a new MBP, so I set the old one aside. I am now trying to repair the problem and cannot get past DiscUtility.
    Starting with a Cmd+R start:
"Use English for the main language" [press Enter]
    Mac OS X Utilites
    [Double-click Disc Utility]
I no longer have "Macintosh HD," but instead a volume called "disc0s2."
From the First Aid tab, I can click Repair Disc. It states: Verifying and repairing partition map for "ST9250315ASG Media" and the time bar begins to run across, while the details box does 5 checks (prereq's, partition list, EFI system), and begins "Repairing the EFI system partition's file system" This runs for a seemingly endless amount of time, until the mouse changes from arrow to spinning color wheel. At this point, clicking nothing works, but the mouse still moves. I manually restarted after 25 minutes. I can let this go all night, but I would like to continue trying alternatives.
    For Volume, the error reads:
         Volume Erase Failed
Volume Erase failed with the error:
         File system formatter failed.
    For partition, I have:
         Partition Layout: Current
         Partition Information:
              Name: disc0s2
              Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
              Size: 249.2 GB
From here, when I try to set up one partition, renamed "Macintosh HD" still journaled for the total capacity (250.06GB), I get:
         Partition Failed
         Partition failed with the error:
         Couldn't unmount disc.
    And then....
    Starting with a Cmd+R start:
"Use English for the main language" [press Enter]
Opened Terminal to verify "date" is correct, which it is. Close Terminal.
[Double-click on Install Mac OS X Lion]
    [Click Agree]
The only option I have to install it on is "Recovery HD." It has 650MB total, with 140.3MB available. Also states, "This disc is locked."
I cannot click on the disc anyways, and the only available option is 'Back.' Ultimately, I have to exit Install, and I'm back to the Mac OS X Utilities.
So, could it be a bad drive? It would seem impossible to me considering that any of this is working at all. I have also tried to boot from a OS X Mavericks USB drive (from my newer MBP), but with the same results; except that the Install OS X is for Mavericks. Everything else is exactly the same.
I don't need any of the data on the computer (if there is any left anyways), and I'll try just about anything.
Thank you in advance for your time!

Thanks for the quick reply. I'm afraid that might be true. Can the computer operate like this with a bad HD?
    Also:
    For partition tab, I have:
         Partition Layout: Current
         Partition Information:
              Name: disc0s2
              Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
              Size: 249.2 GB
From here, when I try to set up one partition, renamed "Macintosh HD" still journaled for the total capacity (250.06GB), I get:
         Partition Failed
         Partition failed with the error:
         Couldn't unmount disc.
