New HD - not enough free space error message

I have a Power Mac G4, dual 866mhz, 2gb RAM. I recently purchased (2) 2TB HDs to use as a file server. The drives install fine and show up on the desktop. Whenever I try to drag files to it, I get an error message saying there is not enough free space. There is nothing on the drive. I tried reformatting with different formats and it still does not work. Any ideas?

Yes I do, The card works fine. Both drives show up and are able to be reformatted. The problem is when I go to drag files. It is 1.8TB free, but I still get an error saying there is not enough free space.

  • "Not enough free space" error message when there is enough free space

Last night I decided to put a few more songs on my iPod, but when I tried I got the following error message:
"The iPod cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the selected playlists."
I know that is a load of crap because it says I have 2.59 gigabytes of free space, and I'm only trying to put 11 or 12 new songs on there. I have checked the settings to make sure that it isn't trying to upload my entire iTunes library, and it's not. I have the latest version of both iTunes and the iPod software. I've tried restarting, reinstalling, and all that... Any suggestions?

First of all, thanks for the replies.
I gave it another try today; I deleted the old files and ripped them to my computer again, this time using Windows Media Player instead of iTunes. I tried transferring them to my iPod again and this time it worked. As always iTunes had to convert them to files that it could read, but then it took just a few seconds and all of them made it to my iPod.
I don't know what the problem was the first time around. I checked the file sizes, and the largest was 4.2 MB. There were about 11 songs. It was just a typical audio CD and its total length was 44 minutes.
I guess from now on I'll just import CDs with Windows Media Player and then let iTunes convert them so that I can have even more files on my computer. Oh well. If that's what it takes... Sometime when I have a lot of time to fool around I'll try to see if something is going wrong when I'm importing them with iTunes.
    Thanks again for the responses!

  • "Not enough free space" error. Prevents sync.

My 4th generation iPod Touch has recently started throwing a "not enough free space" error message every time I try to sync. I haven't added and large files recently, and since getting this error, I have deleted many large files from my Ipod. I still get the message.
    The exact error message is:
"The iPod [my ipod name] cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library (additional 19GB required.)."
My iPod is showing 17.4GB of free space. I'm syncing why wire. Intersetingly, I sync my library to an 120GB regular (non-Touch) iPod without issue.
Any suggestions? I'm about at the end of my rope.
    Thanks.

Here's what worked for me, finally.
In iTunes, I unchecked Apps, Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, etc. so that they wouldn't snyc. Then I syned my iPod. The synce worked fine. Then, I rechked all of the items I previously unchecked and synced again. No error message this time.
It appears that all of the settings in my apps were reset to default after the sync, and perhaps even game data (I rarely play games, so I don't what, if anything it would save), And my home screens were totally unoriganized, so I had to rearrange all of those back to my personal taste, but all is back to normal now.

  • False "not enough free space" error

    Hi
When trying to copy a large file over, an Aperture Library, I get an error saying I have not enough free space.
I have 90GB free, and the library I am attempting to copy over from an external hard drive is only 50GB.
I have run Disc Utility from the recovery mode, and it did find a file (that I had deleted the same day) that was falsely listed as taking up 70GB when it was just 3GB.
I of course had Disc Utility fix the disk, and when running it a second time it did not spot any errors.
I have also used Terminal to search for both the deleted file and the old Aperture Library (that I had deleted) and it does not appear to be anywhere, even as invisible.
What can I do to find out what is taking up the free/not so free space and how can I get it back ?
I am running 10.9.4 on a MacBook Pro with a SSD.

    UPDATE:
I tried to copy the file over in segments rather than as a lump, and that seemed to have worked.
Rather than copying the entire "Aperture Library" package, I opened it, moved "Masters" out of it, copied the remains over, then afterwards copied the contents of the "Masters" folder into the respective positions on the MacBook Pro.
So aparently there is a bug which prevents Maverics 10.9.4 from copying a file bigger than 50GB.
As say this as I could copy the file ONTO an external harddrive from a computer running 10.9.3
So there you have it Apple now, you know you know where to look.
    Thanks for listening

  • Clean Install G4 Dual 1 GHz-Not enough Disk Space Error? -SLOW USB copies

    HELP puhleeeeze!
This seems to be an issue on various sites with no one being able to figure out what is the cause and a solution. One person stated his problem went away with a fullwipe and clean-reinstall of everything. But this is what I did already.
What is the reason for the "Not Enough Disk Space" error message when both my hard drives have gigs of space available. If I had hair I'd be pulling it out by now!   When trying to copy a file to my 2 internal hard drives that have a lot of space available, but only by the USB port?!!
I have a Power Mac G4 Mirrored Door (MDD) Dual 1 GHz with a clean install of 10.5.8 from the Original Mac OS X Leopard DVD. Both internal hard drives are 60GB and 100GB. The hard drives were wiped clean with Disc Utilities and reformatted to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The Power Mac only has the OS and a few music apps installed. Easily over 30 GB of space left on the the main G4 interal hard drive and about 75 GB on the other internal hard drive.
The error seems to only happen when I connect a USB flash drive to the USB port. I tried to copy a 50MB update to the desktop-"Not Enough Disk Space" error message happened.
I know that the G4 MDD Power Macs only have USB 1.0. Is this a USB 2.0 issue? Another issue is that it has very slow USB speed (dramtically slower than normal USB 1.0 copying of files. And this is only when it is successful. Is it a USB format issue? I know I couldn't get an external USB 2.0 drive to mount on the Power Mac at all. Disc Utilities could see it but it still would not mount. I have a friend who has an older G4 single processor Mac that doesn't experience these issues with its USB 1.0 ports.
    Now here's the kicker:
If I put in a CD disc in the DVD/RW drive, it copies with no problems to either hard drive. If I connect to the Power Mac  via the ethernet network, files can copy with no problems. But any USB connection -  I get a the "Not Enough Disk Space" error message. I know this is an old mac... but it's never been problematic until this latest wipe and update to Leopard 10.5.8.
Is there a solution to this? Any and all help, feedback, comments, thoughts are greatly appreciated in advance!!!

    Hello everyone,
Ok, I did the ultimate task. I erased the hard drives, AGAIN. Just to start fresh from scratch. Hard drives were erased. Did a new install of Mac OS 10.5. And all was well. I could copy with no problems. I gave the computer to my friend and all was good for a couple of days and then the issue came back again. He couldn't copy anything to his internal hard drives and we received the "Not enough disk space" error message! I was baffled. A complete hard drive erase 2 times, 2 fresh Mac OS 10.5 installs and it works for a few days and then coping to HD we got the same **** problem again! THEN - I remembered that the PRAM battery was dead on this G4 Mirrored-Door Dual 1GHz PowerMac. I had recommended that he get a new battery, because this computer would always have the incorrect date and time after every restart. So with recalling this, I had him reset the PRAM by holding down the CMD+OPT+P+R keys after a restart (start-up Chime). I had him hold the keys for at least 3 start-up-chimes. Soon as the G4 Power Mac started up everything was fine again. He was able to copy files to his hard drives again with the "Not enough disk space" error message.
So everyone! Try zapping your PRAM (resetting the PRAM) and see if this solves your problem. I told my friend to get a new PRAM battery to replace the old one that is completely dead. I have not heard back from him.  I will ask him again if the problem has come back.
If that fails: My only other solution would be to consider that it is possible that Mac OS 10.5 has a conflict or issue with the G4 Processors and maybe it is safer to install Mac OS 10.3 or 10.4. Because this problem only has occured after installing Mac OS 10.5, the highest version of the Mac OS the Dual 1GHz Mirrored-Door G4 can be installed.
    Cheers,
    B

  • HT1414 I just got a replacement iPhone 5 (64MB) for one with a cracked face, and tried to restore it.  Got an error message saying the iTunes could not restore the iPhone because not enough free space is available on the iPhone.  Now what?

I just replaced my iPhone 5 because of a cracked face.  I backed up the old phone to iTunes.  When I tried to restore my data off of iTunes to the new phone, I got an error message saying that iTunes could not restore the iPhone because not enough free space is available on the new iPhone.  Now what?
I have Apple Care+, but I'll be darned if I can find any way to contact anyone at Apple to talk to about this.  They take your money, but make darned sure they don't have to support you unless you jump through a bunch of hoops first, like this site.

I've done a restore.. The phone was completely wiped back to factory settings.. It then tells me there isn't enough space on the phone to restore from back up? How when the phone is empty?!

    Hello pryan1012,
What this message means is that you have more music in your itunes library than there is free space in your ipod.
I had this same issue at one time. This is what helped me put my music on the ipod. I used manually manage.
Learn how to sync muisc here.
    Hope this helps.

It sounds unlikely of course. But from your question it's hard to tell what might have filled your HDD. Are you constantly on file sharing or has filled the drive with movies?
Best way to tell is to start checking what folders occupy space. "Get Info" for the HDD and its subfolders is a way to start checking where the data in question resides.
And as BGreg say, call Apple support is also a good way to begin with.

  • HT1766 I backed up to my PC and attempted restore but I keep getting an error message that "iTunes could not restore the iPhone because not enough free space is available." I have a 32GB iPhone; only 13GB used!!!  HELP!  iCloud backup/restore did not work

I have a 32GB iPhone; only 13GB used!!!  HELP!  iCloud backup/restore did not work either! How can I resolve this problem to restore from back up.

If you're not a developer then you really should not have upgraded.
I'm unsure how you can fix this as you have already done a back-up on iOS 7 and apple don't support firmware downgrades.

  • Get an error message when importing from iPhoto says, "There is not enough free space on your Aperture Library volume to import the selected items. It is estimated that you need at least 44GB of free space."

I get an error message when importing from iPhoto that says, "There is not enough free space on your Aperture Library volume to import the selected items. It is estimated that you need at least 44GB of free space." the drive is empty, I just reformatted it to Mac OSX journaled.

I'm guessing this is an extrenal drive, correct? If so make sure the library you're importimng into is really located on the external drive. By default Aperture creates its library in your home pictures folder.

I can not seem to back up my iPhone 5s, error message is: iTunes cannot back up this iPhone because not enough free space is available on this computer
There is plenty of space over 260gb

Are you absolutely sure there's 20GB in use, and not that it has 20GB free? If you click on the hard drive icon on your desktop and click cmd-i to Get Info, what is the available space?

  • TS1503 After an update on my iPhone 4, (I updated using my MacBook Pro) I first received the message, iTunes was not able to load all of iTunes library back on your phone, not enough free space on your phone. (not an exact quote, essentially the same mean

The complete iTunes library was already on my iPhone 4. Why would it all not go back on? It left out around 4 or 5 songs from my play list. How do I get them back on my iPhone?
Note: All software on both devices is up to date.
Then, I tried to sync my iPhone to my MacBook Pro. I got the message, cannot sync your iPhone because there is not enough free space in the iTunes library (not exact quote, but same meaning).
I researched how to get more free space on my phone which might 'supposedly' alleviate the above issues. I removed some less used apps, and some photos and videos from my phone. Then, I tried backing up again. I still got the message there wasn't enough free space on my phone, and the missing songs from the iTunes library were not returned to my phone. I gave another try at syncing my iPhone. I still got the same message that the phone couldn't be synced because  there wasn't enough free space in the iTunes library.
Any suggestions on how to remedy these problems will be appreciated!
BTW... I read a suggestion on the internet to restore my phone (I did  this recently when something went wrong during a phone update and the whole process went 'hey-wire', shutting down before the update was complete. However, at that time, all of my songs and apps were still on my phone and stored in the iTunes library.) If I restore my iPhone now, will the apps and songs no longer on my phone be lost?
Sorry there are so many questions within the same 'New Discussion' thread I'm starting! But, I think all of these issues are somehow related.
    Thanks!

I Have fumbled all day to this resolved, I'll run the battery down and see what happens afterwards. This is not good !

  • Question I have a dilemma . I added a lot of songs in my iTunes now when I synced my ipod this message appear "Elma's ipod cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all the items in the iTunes library (additiona

I addesd a lot of songs in my itunes, now when I synced my ipod this message appear "elma's ipod cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all the items in the itunes library (additional 382m is required). Then I uncheck a lot of song and synced my ipod again same message appeared. Do I need to buy a new ipod with more memories? Somebody told me to check apply after I unchecked some of the songs but I cannot find the word APPLY. please help I'm not a very technical person.

The Sync button becomes the Apply button, if you change the iPod's settings in iTunes.  If you are only unchecking songs in the iTunes music library, you click on the Sync button.
When you select the iPod in iTunes, you see the iPod's Summary screen on the main part of the iTunes window.  There is a checkbox there for Sync only checked songs.  Did you check that checkbox?  If you want iTunes to ignore the songs you unchecked when syncing your iPod, that setting needs to be enabled.  If you change that setting, you'll see the the Sync botton has changed to Apply.  Click Apply.
That method of unchecking songs works, but it may become annoying over time, as you need to uncheck more and more songs.  If you want advice on some other more convenient ways to make it work, you can post back.
