New HD not recognized

Just installed a new hard drive in the iBook, and it doesn't show up in Disk Utility. In hardware test cd, it says that there is a hard drive. Any ideas?

The drive did not show up in Disk Utility. I could not format what did not appear. I was booting up from OSX 10.3 install CD. Last night I disassembled and reassembled, taking the IDE cable off and putting it back on. Apparently that worked, for now I am using my iBook. The cable looked fully seated when I took it apart, but apparently it wasn't seated...or something. I am a little leary of it suddenly working just from unplugging and plugging it back in, but at least I will know what needs to be done if things start going weird later on. This is the third hard drive (first two under warranty) that this computer has had installed, so the cable might be a little tired from all the previous repair work.
As an added bonus, I only spent $95 verses $290 that Apple quoted me. I gained 20GB of memory, and got a faster drive. Its incredibly quiet. (Obviously one would expect that to be true when the old one spun at full speed continously as it was dying.) At least they helped me diagnose the problem, when my computer first started hanging. He ran Disk Utility and Disk Genius, both times it returned an unrepairable error. I have had no other problems besides the hard drives going crazy, so I figured that it was a good bet to replace the hard drive. Its suprising to me to know that the old hard drive, Toshiba 60GB MK6025GAS which is the standard drive, went on the fritz only after about 18 months of life. Perhaps an IDE cable replacement is in order? Thoughts?
Thanks for your suggestions fellas, I appreciate that someone responded!

  • Brand new Shuffle - not recognized in Windows or iTunes

I just got an iPod Shuffle 1Gb for Christmas (today). Followed all the instructions installing software, etc. Plug in the iPod - the light on the front flashes orange. Does not show up in My Computer, Device Manager or iTunes.
Uninstalled iPod and iTunes software, rebooted, installed latest iPod and iTunes software downloaded from website. iPod still not recognized and still flashes orange when plugged in to a USB port. Tried several different USB ports - no change.
    Rebooted again (more than once).
    iPod is fully charged.
    iPod has been reset.
I can't restore it, because even the iPod software doesn't recognize it.
My USB ports are fine - digital camera and external USB hard drive still work when plugged in to the various ports. Unplugged all other USB devices and iPod still wasn't recognized.
All my friends love their iPods. This is my first one. I have to say... I'm not impressed.
As I said, this was a gift, so I don't have a receipt for it, and there isn't an Apple store near me. And I think having to pay $30 to send it back to Apple so they'll replace it with a "new, used or refurbished" iPod is bullsh*t.

I had the same problem today.
What I found is that during the install routine, the Shuffle was not formatted. I went through Windows Explorer (right click on "Start" and choose "explore"). My computer found the shuffle as a removable media, but when I tried accessing it (clicking on the drive while in explorer), I got a message saying that it wasn't formatted. So, I said yes to the prompt to format it and as soon as it did, iTunes saw it and started the rest of the install routine. I had to restart and replug in the device, and it seems to be working great.
I don't know if this will help you out, but it is worth a try.

  • New iPod not recognized in Vista PC and no devices in iTunes

Hello, plugged iPod Touch into computer and Vista showed usual little box which said automatically located drivers and installed them. But couldn't find iPod in My computer. Installed iTunes from download area. No devices in left column.
Reinstalled iTunes from fresh download. Plugged iPod in every USB point on computer, but nothing happens. IPod not found or recognized.
Tried to find USB driver in Device Manager but all have generic names and so can't identify which driver was installed for iPod. None show installation date or anything which may identify which one. Also forgot to create restore point first (kicking self - always do this normally before installing something new).
Been through Apple help pages and tried all their ideas including reinstalling. Still nothing found.
Could someone please suggest what to do, besides dropping computer out of window?
    Many thanks

  • New computer not recognizing iPod

My laptop hard-drive crashed, but I had all my iTunes on an external hard drive. My iPod (30GB, noncolor, flywheel) had been synching with the ailing laptop and was not working right (showing the folder/exclamation point sign; when I hard reset it now I just get the Apple symbol and clicking sounds), so I'm assuming my iPod problems are just a reflection of an aborted synch attempt with the dying compueter.
So now I've successfully reset iTunes on my work desktop PC with Windows XP via the external hard drive. I downloaded the latest iPod version onto the new computer but it is not "recognizing" my iPod...it says to plug in my iPod when it is already plugged in. The plugged in iPod seems to alternate between "Do Not Disconnect" and "OK to Disconnect" (with a giant checkmark) messages. Regardless, the iTunes page is not "recognizing" the iPod...
Once I do figure out how to get my iPod "recognized", should I choose to RESTORE or UPDATE it? I don't have playlists or ratings to worry about, just ~3500 preciously selected songs I enjoy shuffling at random.
    Thanks!

I cannot "See" the iPod. I have tried it on different computers that worked before with my iPod. On a laptop computer, there is some humming and clicking as if it is about to be recognized, but my iPod never shows up on the iTunes list (under Library, playlists, etc). When I go to "My Computer", there is nothing listed under the appropriate E drive (USB port). On a desktop computer, the iPod actually changes to the "Do Not Disconnect" sign and again there is the expected humming and clicking that suggests it is going to be "recognized", but it never comes up on the iTunes list. Under My Computer, there is a transient picture of something like a hard-drive with a big red questionmark, as if the computer is in the process of "recognizing" something at the USB port, but this fades and then there is intermittently this "removable storage" listed under drive F. As if it is only transiently being "recognized". When I manage to right click on the transient icon under My Computer, I get the list pulled down and left click on "Format..." but nothing happens. Then the iPod screen changes from "Do Not DIsconnect" (which again was an improvement from the other computer where there was no sign the iPod was even attempting to engage with the computer) to the giant checkmark and "OK to Disconnect" sign OR goes back to the "File Folder/! icon". Tried several times....
    What do you think?

  • MacBook Pro 5,1 - new HD not recognized

    hi,
2 weeks ago suddenly my MacBook Pro (5,1) started giving signs of an HD related disease. having a good backup (phew!) I simply ordered a new Western Digital Blue Scorpio 500Gb (same size I already had) and replaced it.
Nope! When I restarted my MBP, the new HD didn't show up in Disk Utility under Snow Leopard.
I browsed various resources, then put the new HD in an external box and reformatted it. then I put it IN  the MacBook Pro, but without success.
presently I am using my MBP from an external HD (not really confortable) and apparently NO other HD but the original one (Hitachi 500Gb) is recognized by Disk Utility!!
It's a very strange AND frustrating issue I never had before. The original HD is faulty (fail to format), but will be recognized by DU, the new Western Digital Blue Scorpio and a Samsung (1Tb) will not.
    Any hint?
    thanks,
    Luca

Hi donv: I repartitioned, rechecked with DU, even ran a hardware test, still not recognizing the HDD from within the (family pack) installer.
Restoring 10.5.8 works and the machine boots just fine. I am at a loss.
The disk is a WDC WD3200BEVT-22ZCT0. Could the disk be a problem? A year ago a certified technician replaced the original disk with this one.

  • New harddrive not recognized after boot

    Hi,
I just got a new (never been used) Western Digital Green 4TB hard drive today, but it doesn't seem to be recognized by the OS after booting. In the BIOS it is recognized, but as having ~2TB of storage instead of 4TB. During booting I get this message a few times: "ata9: softreset failed (device not ready)". This causes booting to take around 30 seconds longer than usual and the drive makes some strange beeping noises while this is happening. Eventually the message stops printing, and the beeping stops, and the OS finishes booting, but the drive is not recognized at all.
Did I get sent a defective drive?
My motherboard is a z77 Sabertooth that I purchased in the summer of 2012. Is there a certain SATA port I need to use for a drive this big? Could it be that the drive is not getting enough power to spin up? I noticed that the drive has some extra pins that none of my other hard drives have, like in the left side of this image http://techreport.com/r.x/wd-red-4tb/straight.jpg. Am I supposed to plug anything into those?
Last edited by tylerpnn (2015-03-17 15:58:31)

    The pins are for jumpers.
Try different SATA cables, SATA ports, and power connectors. If behaviour doesn't change you probably have a bad drive.

  • New drive not recognized

I installed additional hard drive, icon showed up initially, now that drive is no longer recognized by computer: SATA internal drive 400 Gig Western Digital.
I set it up as 1 partition. How can I get computer to recognize the newly installed drive?
    g5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Excellentpa has a 1.8GHz (single) G5 with 1GB RAM. I helped him install the SE16 WD4000KD without knowing the issues with that drive.
    Quick Recap:
    - installed WD4000KD drive in G5.
    - drive initialized fine, but not recognized upon reboot.
    - unrecognized drive removed
    - now on startup, HD seems to speed up continuously and no functions work.
He's got the original OSX disk that came with the computer, but no apparent way to install the disk and access the disk repair utility since the CD drive door won't function.
Any ideas for a fix? Thanks!

  • New Nook not recognized

I have gone from a Nook Color to a Nook HD and Digital Editions will not recognize it when I connect it to my computer

Most tablets are not recognized by ADE (digital editions).
Try installing a compatible Adobe DRM  app on the tablet, Bluefire seems the most reliable.
Authorize Bluefire with your Adobe ID.
Then copy books from the computer to the tablet using your file manager (Windows Explorer, Mac Finder) to the tablet as a mounted drive.
You should be able to borrow and read library books directly on the tablet without going via ADE.
The Overdrive app is specially designed for that, but I have found it rather stroppy in use (on iPad).
I usually use a dedicated ereader for reading rather than the iPad as it weight about a million times less,
so still need to go via ADE.

  • New HD not recognized as startup disk after Time Machine restore

I installed a 320 GB seagate HD (original drive from my Mac Pro) into my wife's iMac G5 1.8Ghz replacing the stock 80 GB drive. Once I completed the installation, I used the "Restore from a Time Machine Backup" option on the OS X 10.5 installer disk to restore the old data onto the new drive. All went we but now the drive isn't recognized as a startup disk. It shows up in disk utility but not as a bootable device.
    Any suggestions?

Good catch! That's exactly what the problem is. The G5's drive needs to be reformatted as Mac OS Extended (journaled), but before that is done, the data should be transferred to an external, so it can be reloaded onto the G5 afterwards.

  • New HD not recognized - computer won't start

    Powermac G4 MDD
Originally had 2 hard drives -- 60GB (jumpered as master) and 40GB (jumpered as slave)
The 40 GB failed and the 60 GB was diagnosed as failing so I purchased used Seagate 160 GB ATA/100 Hard drive
I installed the new 160 GB Hard drive in place of the 40 GB HD and used SuperDuper to clone the still working 60 GB drive. The files were all copied to the drive and the drive showed up on the desktop as a hard drive icon, and it was recognized in the System Profiler. However, I could not select it as the startup drive from the System Prefs window.
I then took out the 60GB drive and replaced it with the 160 GB drive jumpered as cable select and now the computer won't start up (flashing question mark).
    What have I done wrong?

I read through all this and still have some trouble. The article says that in Disk Utility if I select the drive a tab named "Partition" will appear at the top of the window among the other tabs. It doesn't.
I noticed some differences in the spec for the 2 drives currently in the machine: specifically, the new 160 gb drive is formatted (right word?) as GUID not AMD as the old drive is. But I can't figure out how to access that "partition" option and make the change. Here are the spec from System Profiler:

  • New laptop, new ID not recognized

    Hello -
I have a new laptop and my old iTunes ID under which I purchased a whole bunch of songs is no longer recognized by the new laptop and I'm getting this message that the laptop is unauthorized to play these songs. When I try to log in under the old ID and authorize, it won't let me. What happened to the old ID? How can I reinstate it??
    Thank you!!!

Try closing the Words app completely and see if it works properly when you re-open the app : from the home screen (i.e. not with the Words app 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Words app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
If that doesn't work also do a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • New iMac Not Recognizing iBook Running In Target Mode

Help!! I am helping a friend transfer all of her files and settings from her old iBook to a new iMac. I have repeatedly followed the instructions for using the Migration Assistant but the new iMac does not recognize the iBook after it is started in Target Mode. I have switched cables, zapped the pram, used the startup disk to repair disks and permissions. I can plug in an external firewire drive and it recognizes it immediately. I was called Apple Support, talked with first layer technician, was put on hold for next level of technician, put phone on speaker, person came back, said they couldn't hear me and hung up. Called back and low and behold it was quitting time. Very, Very frustrated.

    bookwiz wrote:

Several posters have reported this. A solution that has worked for some is to place a powered firewire hub between the two machines (if you external FW disk is self powered and has two FW ports, that might work).

  • New Itouch not recognized by windows or itunes.

I got the itouch today for XMAS. I have attempet to activate it on two different laptops and my home computer, none of which recognize it in windows or on itunes. The only thing I can consistently get from the itouch screen is the picture to conncet to itunes. WHich obviously doesn't work.
I have reinstalled itunes several times, verified the usb ports (which are multiple) are working. I have reset the itouch, even though I haven't even used it.
Any logical suggestions on how to activate this thing?

I was really frustrated this morning when I expected to plug in my new ipod touch and it did not work...
I have spent hours and hours trying to figure out what in the world is wrong with it.
I called apple support on the phone this morning and none of the troubleshooting ideas worked so I made an appt with customer service on SATURDAY! ahhhhh i seriously do not want to wait....i kind of want to smash it on the ground....
i read everyones thread and the exact same problems are happening to me...
when i pluggled it in it said "This Ipod cannot be used because the Apple Mobile Device service is not started." so i went into services and the program refused to start....goody...then on some weird spur of the moment click, it worked but even then my ipod didnt even show up in itunes...made that annoying little noise
im going to see if i can exchange this defective ipod touch for another, but i just hope there arent 5 million people there...(day after christmas)
