New HD. Wnt to import iPod to iTunes. HOW??

Recently HD crashed and burned. Now I am up and running and want to import over 1500 iPod tunes BACK onto my iTunes library, but I am not having any luck "looking around" and I didn't see any forum discussions re: this topic. Has this happened to anyone recently? What did you do to restore tunes. Am close to "reimporting all CDs" but obviously don't want to go through that laborious hassle....unless I have to. Looking for the right way to do this. Thanks.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows. The procedure is a bit involved and was written long before iTunes 7 so it requires a little adaptation, also it won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. This is just a selection, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

IPod to iTunes - how?

My MacBook's hard drive failed under warrenty, and Apple replaced the hard drive.
The computer came back with OS 10.5.6 on it. The iTunes version is 8.0.2. All my music files from my old iTunes library is on my iPod (and nowhere else but separate cd discs). Very few tunes in my large library were purchased from the iTunes store. What is the best way to transfer my iPod library into my new (blank) iTunes library? I assume this will require 3rd party software.

1). Connect your iPod to your computer. You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys together. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. You should then be able to change your settings: iTunes for Mac - Keyboard Shortcuts
2). When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Corrution/inability to see iPod in iTunes - how do I restore without iTunes

When I connect my iPod (4th Gen) to my Mac, iTunes immediately says there is corruption and it needs to be restored. It was working fine last time I connected, but heh.
All right, fine, but I can't even select the iPod in iTunes, let alone restore it. My iPod always drops out of the source list (unmounts) whenever I click the OK button on the warning, leaving me no opportunity to get to the Restore function.
I've tried the following procedures:

Auto-syncing ipod with itunes: how not to have it synced with whole library

I remember a year ago when I had itunes automatically sync with my ipod, it created a playlist, something along the name of "NAME's iPOD SONGS" or something like that. And then every time i connected my ipod, it would only look into that playlist to see what's been added or removed, and so it would sync only with that folder.
But now, it wants to sync with my whole library, which doesn't fit on my ipod. How do I make it sync with only a playlist instead?

Select the Music tab
Near the top of the tab select *Sync Music* & *Selected playlists:*
Check the playlists you want to include, uncheck those you don't

My old PC crashed and I now have a new one. I re-installed itunes and when I connect my ipod, it says something to the effect that the ipod is attached to another library, do I want to replace that library with this one (which the new PC does not have anay libraries set up yet). How can I share my ipod to my new PC. My old one is toast.

80GB older IPOD and new 160GB IPOD multiple iTunes - how to consolidate

I purchased an 80GB a year ago and created playlists etc. Now I purchased a new 160GB and created a new iTunes file but I would like to consolidate the music files into one location. Maybe syncing two different IPOD's from the same iTunes. If I sync the old IPOD, to the new file, it will erase all existing files and playlists. I would also like to save on the disk space. How can I accomplish this without spending all day?

Never giving up and never letting the lack of a manual defeat me.... with a little luck and persistent trial and error I finally figured it out. And no, it wasn't memory, because honestly I can't recall from years ago how I had put that transmitter in pairing mode.
And for those of you who cherish outdated technology or may come across one.... The blue LED window on the side of the transmitter is also a pushbutton. With the iPod paused, press and hold the LED button immediately after power up, and the transmitter goes into pairing mode.
Now time to go enjoy my music with my new bluetooth headset

If you are adding a second iPod for your own use, just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually.
When the iPods belong to different people, there are basically three ways of using multiple iPods on a computer and these involve:
a) Sharing a single iTunes library
b) Creating Multiple Libraries in a single user account
c) Creating multiple user accounts.
Note: When you are sharing an iTunes library, you don't have to set each iPod to update in the same manner, you can mix and match from the options below as each iPod has it's own update settings
Sharing a Library and/or User Account
If you want to share the one library, you can set either or all of the iPods so that they only get updated with only certain playlists (you can update from more than one if you wish): Loading songs onto iPod automatically - Windows
Choosing the update option "Sync Music - Selected playlists" allows you to create a playlist specifically for the iPod and drag the tracks you want into it. If you tire of the list and want to change it, you just add or remove the songs you don't want. The ones you take out out remain in the library to be used some other time if you choose. Or you can choose to update any or all of the iPods manually and just drag whatever content you want to them: Managing content manually on iPod

Multiple Libraries
It's also possible to have multiple libraries in a single account. To create or access a second (or more) library, hold down the Option key (or Shift key in Windows) when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to the other Library.
Note: You can only have one Library open at a time and iTunes will default to the last library opened if you don't use the keyboard command to choose one. This can prove tricky when using multiple iPods, if you don't use the keyboard command you can risk syncing to the wrong library: Using multiple iTunes libraries -Windows
Separate User Accounts
Another option is to create a separate User account for each person on your PC or Mac. Different accounts by definition would give you completely separate libraries. Each account has it's own iTunes folder, Library and iTunes Music folder and you load it with CDs etc just as you did with your original one. The iPod can be set to update however the owner chooses, sync all, manual or sync specific playlists

I have read the apple documentation on how to share an itunes library with a second ipod. In my case, it will be with my wife. If I decide to go with the second option (keep one login account, but create various playlists that get synced to specific ipods), how will Itunes keep track of which podcasts have been listened to? Will itunes simply change its state to reflect the most recent sync? Or is there some way to keep track of which Ipod has listened to which podcasts?

Importing Audiobooks to iTunes-how to get them into "Audiobooks" library?

I own a lot of audio books I want to import into iTunes instead of lugging around the hardware anymore. If I insert a disc, it imports it as a music album, not in the "Audiobooks" section in the Library. I want to import in smallest mp3 size (fidelity is not an issue with audiobooks) and be able to access the files as Audiobooks rather than titled music albums. How do I do this? I can scan the covers, etc, as I do with Music when iTunes doesn't have the right cover art, but still don't know how to access the Audiobooks section in Library.

The definition of what is an Audiobook and what isn't is in the encoding of the tracks - I recall that files with m4a, mp4 or mp3 file extensions are tracks and not audiobook files.
Only files with .m4b can be audiobook files but that still isn't enough - the file properties also have to have their file type set to be audiobook and not music tracks.
Its a PITA but the encoding from aCD has these issues whereas the purchased audiobooks I have from iTunes, come in the right format and end up in the right place.

I have recently bought a new netbook. all my itunes songs are stored on an external drive, however when i downloaded itunes again for the new netbook, they no longer showed in itunes. how can i get my song and podcast library over to the new netbook?

can anyone help with this please? i feel its wrong to have to pay Apple £25 for something that should be more obvious and easier to do.

Go into the iTunes preferences and turn off the options that have you Copy Music To My Library.
Then, add the top folder which contains your music to iTunes - it will create links to your remote folder rather than copy all music to your netbook.

Can I import my existing Itunes library to new computer

I am sure that the last time I changed computers it was very simple to move the Itunes library using Export Library from the old computer and Import Library in the new computer, This simple mechanism seems to be no longer available,
I know that, in File/Library, there is an Export Library option but this produces a very small XML file which I believe is used for playlists - it is clearly not an export of the full library. There is also an Import Playlist facility for the new computer but no Import Library facility
So how should i go about transferring transferring my Itunes library to the new computer?

Dying to use my 80GB iPod, but iTunes won't cooperate... Please help!

I've had my new 80GB iPod for over a week, and I'm getting no use out of it because of iTunes.
I first installed iTunes 7 right after getting my new iPod. It took several tries to install it. After I thought it worked, it ended up not working because QuickTime hadn't installed properly. I uninstalled iTunes, installed an older standalone version of QuickTime and then upgraded with the iTunes 7 installer. When I plugged my iPod in, the Setup Assistant never ran because iTunes wouldn't detect my iPod. One day, the Setup Assistant spontaneously decided to run, and I assumed everything would be working.
After that one occasion, iTunes would no longer detect my iPod unless I went through the process of turning off the iPod service, plugging the iPod in, restarting the service and manually opening iTunes. I was able to sync only a fragment of my iTunes library because iTunes just stops detecting my iPod within a few moments -- I'm good for 2 minutes or LESS. If this happens, I have to close iTunes and repeat the process of stopping/restarting the iPod Service all over again.
I updated iTunes yesterday, and it's even more difficult to get iTunes to detect my iPod. Simply stopping/restarting the iPod Service doesn't always work, and I ofter have to restart the computer and then go through the iPod Service routine. It detects the iPod less than half of the time, and still loses it after only a few moments of recognizing it. I wanted to restore the iPod and start from scratch, but I can't because iTunes stops detecting the iPod before the restore process begins.
I've completely removed iTunes/QuickTime several times and have done everything suggested in the support articles, but nothing works... I'd really appreciate any suggestions because this is driving me absolutely crazy.

yes, it would be nice if it was easier to find this one. it might be good, for example, if there were links from some of our other main troubleshooting documents to it. like this one:

as to why having Terminal Services enabled is so important with 7 ... i'm not precisely sure. one of my first thoughts (when i found out about this one) was "so, what is Terminal Services?"
from what i was able to track down at MS:

... it seems plausible that some of the new functionality we get with ipods in itunes 7 depends on Windows components that rely on Terminal Services. but i'd be guessing if i tried to say what functionality and what Windows components were involved.
