New HDD = dead sync

I just got a new HDD put in my Powerbook, and I copied the old iCal info to my new drive, and now I cannot sync my Palm Zire. I installed Palm 4.2.1 and set it up in iSync. It will look like it is doing something, but then not actually change anything.

Hi iSMH
A new HD in your PB wouldn't be the reason to your syncing problems.
It's probably some sort of wrong settings, but I can't help you with that, since I don't own a Palm anymore.

Thanks Chris   The phone has been great until this morning.  When using the camera it seemed to shut down, then it was just looping the restart, and finally into recovery   It never rains but pours   Thanks anyway
BTW, the phone has never been jailbroken or anything.  Stock standard

  • My hdd is gone and now I have a new one without my old key - how can I get my stored data on my new hdd?

all data on my old hdd is lost after an crash. so i changed it with a new hdd. but the old sync key is not longer available. I generated a new key so i lost all my old date stored with sync... is there any way to restore the old data from my old hdd sync key...?

Sorry, no. The SyncKey is used for encryption / decryption during the Sync process, without the Sync Key that was used to encrypt your personal data as it was uploaded to the Sync storage server your data is worthless. Plus, when you generate a new Sync Key for an existing account, all the data that is saved on the server for that account is deleted for your security.
Do you still have the old HDD? It may work long enough for you to extract your Firefox data, if you put that drive in a USB drive enclosure and access it as an external drive. <br />

  • Hi, My Macbook Air Rev A 80gb HDD isn't showing up in Disk Utilitiy (new hdd btw)

Hey guys.. im new and this is my first post
Recently my Macbook Air rev a 80gb original hdd was failing *S.M.A.R.T* so i knew its time for a new hdd soon anyways... then i managed to format it with disk utility one day then after that it completely stopped detecting in disk utilitiy. now got my new hdd which is exactly the same *confirmed* and well its not detecting with my macbook...
    Helllppppp meee please
(PS. dont just comment stating the obvious i.e. try a new hdd cable as they are not cheap for a trial and error case)
    Thanks...
Ps. i have a secondary Mac Pro to use in the meantime if this can help repair/cd boot?

Does the new drive appear in Disk Utility?  If so then you need to prep the drive before you can use it:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.
If the drive does not appear in Disk Utility then either the new drive is dead, you've installed the ribbon cable incorrectly, the new drive is physically installed improperly, or there is some other hardware issue.

  • Can't detect boot device after factory format to new HDD

First off, I have an HP Pavilion G6 that I purchased in December 2012. Yesterday I decided to get a new HDD to upgrade it and start fresh. It's a 1TB SSD+HDD hybrid by Seagate. It installed without a hitch, and I used my HP recovery CDs to do a factory format of the disk.
It finishes, reboots, but instead of rebooting to the HP Windows 8 setup screens, it goes to what looks like Windows 8 safe mode with a box containing the date, time, and it says something along the lines of "HP diagnostics driver installation" with an OK. Clicking that or not makes it disappear, and there's a command prompt bar at the bottom left hand corner of the screen.
The screen changes to an HP screen that begins to install drivers. It finishes, and reboots to a black screen that says "no boot device detected, please install OS."
I ran a check of the drive and it's fine. I swapped my regular drive back in, and it loaded up fine. In fact that's what I'm using right now to type this.
What could be the problem here? The boot order was never changed in the BIOs. If it were the connector failing I doubt it would load the drive that's always been in the computer. Loading up the newly formatted drive in an external enclosure shows that Windows 8 is indeed on it, but on a 93GB partition even though the drive is 1TB.
I'm at a total dead end here and no one seems to know what to do!

  • HDD dead. No OSX discs.

    Hey,
So a few days ago I posted a thread in which I explained that I was experiencing some HDD issues, and that it could be a faulty SATA cable. I am now pretty sure it's actually a dead HDD. While the HDD was disappearing and reappering on Disk Utility just a couple of days ago, it has gotten harder and harder to find it. Now I've given up. It has just disappeared forever from Disk Utility.
Problem is, I have zero backups and no OSX discs as I never got them when I purchased my late 2012 13'' MBP from an Australian third party dealer.
While I believe I will be perfectly capable of jamming in a new HDD or SSD into my MBP, my problem is that I don't know how I would go about installing OSX on that new drive. I can order Mountain Lion from Apple, but then what's next? Do I just insert the disc and install? Any precautions?
    Thanks,
    Sebastian

    Hi there momanjabo,
You should be able to reinstall OS X using Internet Recovery. Take a look at the article below for more information.

It should be like the very first time you synced your phone with I-Tunes. It will notice you haven't synced before and just copy everything from your phone into I-Tunes. It shouldn't delete anything from the phone, at least it never has for me. It just puts a copy of everything into I-Tunes and even if you delete an app for example from your phone and you decide you want it back later, you can just go back into I-Tunes and copy it back over. Hope this helps.

  • New HDD Freezes at initial install screen w/ Disc 1

My hard drive is just about dead, and I ordered a new one, put it in as per instructions, and the computer freezes on the initial install screen.  I put in theOSX install disc and restarted it, and hold the option key, the page wanting me to click on the Install Disc 1 icon with the grey arrow underneath comes up I click and it freezes.  I have to restart it. Wash, rinse, repeat.
My question: is the problem the new HDD, the disc, or possibly both? And what would be he best way to remewdy the sitaution?
When the HDD was dying and I was trying to diagnose, the machine wouldn't boot from install disc 1, and it doesn't respond to holding the C key at all.  I have to use Option. The machine is just out of warranty (6 weeks), and just over 3 years old.  I've never used the install discs before, and they are not scratched or visibly damaged, so they might be faulty. The optical drive is probably OK, becuase I've recently imported music from CD without trouble.
Many thanks.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

only boots in single-user SAFE mode
Sorry, a bit confused, does it boot into the 2 different modes... Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), AND Single User Mode, ( CMD+s keys at bootup)?
Can you turn off Airport in Safe Mode & try a normal boot?

  • Mac Pro won't clean install OSX on new HDD

I have a Mac Pro early 2008 and I was running windows and mac on 2 separate hard drives. I was using the 500gb WD hdd that came with the mac that had mac installed and I just upgraded to mavericks, and I was also using a new WD 1TB hdd for Windows (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0088PUEPK/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1394048774&sr=8-1). I was using windows more because I was having trouble switching back and forth and sometimes the mac hdd wouldn't show up. I tried a few different things with the harddrive and I just came to the conclusion that the mac hdd was dead. It was the original hdd that came with the Mac Pro so it was pretty old I figured it just died, it wouldn't show up anywhere. Anyways, I bought. 2TB WD hdd (http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008YAHW6I) to use for mac and now when I tried to install it with the retail mac snow leopard install disk from apple, it gets to the grey apple logo with the loading circle and just stays there forever. I've left it on for a while and it still stays there, which is the same thing that happened when I tired to reinstall it to the old mac harddrive that I think is dead. I've started up into boot option and the new hdd doesn't show up, idk if it's supposed to show up being that's it's a new hdd or what. So I'm not sure if the hard drive is incompatible or the installer disc is incompatible with this Mac Pro. Or the 2tb is too big, I've heard people run up to 3tb on one hard drive on mac pros and they still run good. So I'm not sure, if anybody could please help I'm sure it's probably something simple. Links to the harddrives I have are above. Thanks a lot !

No 2TB is not too big, though it is overly large for a boot drive.
A 128 or 250GB SSD is just about perfect for system boot drive - for either system.
Cloning for backup is the best type of insurance against issues. Two probably, one you can have a copy of the working sytem, one older safe copy. And use those to repair.
you might have been able to clone it. You might be able to mount it and use Data Rescue 3.
A "recovery drive" and two backup drives: TimeMachine and clone.
System drive and "data" drive for all the media and data and other non system files, all YOUR user folders and files.
Did you change out the video card? that could be one reason why. Apple's ATI 5770 requires 10.6.5+ - beyond the build of the retail Snow Leopard.
You could try buying Mountain Lion too.
With good backup clones then rare to ever need to redo and install the system. But it is good to start fresh when you have a new OS, and to format any drive at that time, and probably on a yearly basis - and not just keep using same drive for system, or for data.
I would think that without proper maintenance and use of Disk Utility: Repair Disk, you just had simple directory corruption issues.

  • HDD Failed, how to copy restore partition to new HDD?

    Hallo,
I have a Compaq Mini netbook, with Windows 7 Starter.
The HDD failed and it's not repairable. However, it seems that the recovery partition is OK.
I want to buy a new HDD, install the driver on the netbook and then use the recovery partition/tools in order to install windows 7 on the new PC.
So, the question is simple: How do I copy recovery partition to the new HDD?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hello s91066.
So your hard drive on your notebook has failed? If this is the case what do you mean by the "recovery partition is ok?" I doubt that this notebook has two hard drives so if you're able to see this partition your hard drive may still be working.
You'll need a set of recovery discs to restore the partitions on the new hard drive. If you're able to boot into Windows, which you probably can't with a dead hard drive, you can follow these steps if you can get into Windows.
If you can not boot into Windows you need a set of discs. You can order these directly from HP. The number for the US/Canada is 1-800-474-6836. If you're in another area you'll need to visit HP Support Worldwide to get your area's contact information.
I hope this is helpful; have a great weekend!

  • Freeing up SN on crashed HDD for install on new HDD

    Hi,
Laptop HDD failed, new HDD installed and configured. I can't deactivate SN on old drive since the drive is dead.
I need to free up that SN for Acrobat Pro X to install on the new laptop HDD. How can I do this?
    Thanks
    Brad

You should have at least 2 installs that you can use. You will still need the SN. If you need to deactivate after the crash, you will need to contact Adobe. I don't have the correct contact at hand, so either you will have to wait for someone else to provide it or search the Adobe site yourself.

  • Old HDD died, new HDD doesn't have Thinkvantage. Help...

The HDD that came with my T61P died.
I purchased and installed a new HDD, but now the computer is missing a lot of drivers and software that I would like to have back on the computer (namely, ThinkVantage, fingerprint login, Touchpad Navigation).
I visited the T61P driver support page and downloaded all drivers for Vista-32 and installed them, but that did not solve all of my issues.
Things that still do now work:
1.) I don't know how to get ThinkVantage back on the computer (Hidden recovery partition).
2.) Fingerprint scanner still does not work.
3.) "Fn" keyboard Function buttons do not work
NOTE: This is after I have installed all applicable drivers.
I can't seem to figure out what to do next to resolve these issues.
    Any help would be appreciated.
Message Edited by erdavis on 07-13-2009 03:48 PM

    Hi erdavis,
    Welcome to the Lenovo forum.
I think the easiest way for you to restore the recovery partition(s) is to re-install from a set of product recovery CDs. If you didn't create these before (suppose you didn't since you would probably have used them already) you should be able to order a set from Lenovo.
If you're not dead set on having the hdd recovery partitions, you could purchase a copy of Acronis True Image and use that instead of Rescue and Recovery for whole-drive backups to an external USB drive. I've found such backups and restores to be far faster (about 20 minutes, depends on the size of your disk of course) than using R&R. But the ThinkVantage button won't work on boot.
You're probably missing some drivers that are causing your other problems. The easy way to get them is to install and run ThinkVantage System Update; it will download and install all necessary drivers for your ThinkPad.
    Good luck!
