New HDD, no connection, no reaction, no disk utility...etc.

White Macbook 2009, OS 10.6.3 (Snow Leopard) and later 10.8 (Mountain Lion) installed
The 10.6.3 disk is still available.
The macbook took some hard hitting.
After that, it didn't want to start up anymore.
Disk utility said the hard drive was unrepairable.
Bought a new one.
The old hdd was a Toshiba MK2555GSXF (250 GB) but purchased a Toshiba MQ01ABD100 (1 TB) having seen somewhere it should work with the Macbook.
After installing the new hard drive, the computer refuses to do anything.
It won't launch disk utility. Starting with ALT only results in the cursor arrow towards the light grey screen - nothing else.
The optical disk drive also seems to be ruined (spins the dvd but spits it out after a while) but I've tried my external disk drive (new Apple USB Super Drive) and to start it up with C. Not much happens. The apple logo is up for a while and then it's swapped for the circle with a diagonal line inside. After that - nothing.
The super drive also stops.
I've reinstalled the old hard drive just to check out if something else is out of order - like if I ruined the connection when swapping hard drives - but no. That hdd is to be found and disk utility opens as usual.
So, it's not really so simple to just put a new hard drive in the computer?
I'm not particulary interested in these technical gizmos and I don't understand much, so it's probably something rather easy or obvious.
But I tought I'd be able to swap the hard drive and do the formatting - and start up from the dvd.

Ok, I got my new psu and it seems to work ok.  I have only had it a few hours though.  But the second time I booted up my computer, it ran checkdisk.  Is my hard drive fried?  Where do I find the log of what it did?   It went by really fast and it looked like no errors, but it might have said something about fixing the file system.  This is a fresh install.  My new psu is an antec neo HE 550 watt modular with three 12v rails each with 18 amps.  I don't do anything on this computer but listen to music and surf the web, but I am pouring a ton of money into it.  Anyways, should I RMA my new hard drive already?  I want to wait a few days and see if it does it again.  Maybe it was left over errors from before I put in the new psu.   Any other ideas on what it could be besides my psu messing up the hard drive?  I noticed that the voltages were awfully high with the enermax, and it did shut down for overvoltage protection (the mobo did.)   ???

  • New HDD, trying to install Lion without disk utility or a mac (HELP!!!!!!!)

    Hello everyone,
Here follows my situation: my previous and precious hard drive died a few months back inside my macbook pro. I bought a brand new one and am trying very hard to find a way to install the os lion on it but I cannot seem to find any plausible way or answers for people stuck only with a Windows pc to do this work.
It is fair to mention that I no longer have my old installation DVD`s from Apple, although, I have the os dmg file to work with, an external hdd 1tb, dvd-rw´s, the lot.
Did use a software called Transmac but it would just somehow, not cut it for me, neither trial nor full version. My External WD hard drive is fully formatted into HFS+ by the way.
Also tried two virtual machines in order to use os lion on my Windows 7 and do the farly simple trick with disk utility itself, but those will not work for unfortunate people like me that are using AMD processors, once again, back to the drawing board.
Would any of you guys know a way around this?
Heard we could convert the dmg into iso and burn it using Nero and making it still bootable on Macbooks. Nevertheless, I have tried this option with two different combinations and it will still not boot.
If anyone could just light up my way I would appreciate it very much.

Thank you so much for your input here guys!
I've manage to do it using the same software I was blaming here on the post: Transmac!
So if you find yourself having the same trouble; persist!!!
Use macdrive 8 or later on windows 7 (or other windows OS if it works for you) and format the whole external hard drive or usb stick to htf+, unfortunatelly I could not find a way to format only a smaller partition on there.
Them go to Transmac, you need to have the full version in order for it to work and run as admin, the DMG file will them be expanded, in my case OS Lion was 3.50 roughly and expanded to 3.88.
Choose "format with image" (something like that, correct me if I am wrong, there should be only two options for it anyway) confirm all the following options and wait for it to do its trick.
Should anything go wrong with the writting procedure, go back and look into the small details one more time, two, three if needed.
I can safely say that this is the easiest method I have came across to create a bootable external drive for mac using Windows given the keys I had to work with.
    Best of luck!

  • Cloning new HDD stuck at verifying stage in Disk Utility

    Hi,
Was owndering if someone can provide me some guidance on cloning to a new HDD with Disk Utility.
I have tried doing the cloning (i.e. Restore in Disk Utility) two times on the same new HDD, but I had to cancel the process during it's verifying stage. The reason for canceling it is because the cloning process got stuck at verifying stage and keep saying 5 hours remaining...Also, the new HDD would disappear on the Destination field (see pictures below)
Now I have used an enclosure by Apricorn, and this same enclosure has been used to clone another HDD for me once no problem. I'm satrting to think either the enclosure has a problem, but if it does, it shouldn't even be working up until the verifying stage, right?
Thank you all in advance for your responses.
    Peter

My iMac does not see the new Toshiba external drive in Finder or Disk Utility.  How can I get it to see the drive?

    From the menu bar, select
 ▹ System Preferences ▹ Energy Saver ▹ Power Adapter
and uncheck the box labeled Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible, if it's checked.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
Test the drive with another Mac. Test another drive with this Mac.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
Start up in Recovery mode and launch Disk Utility. Is the drive recognized?
Start up in Safe Mode and test.
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, and if another drive does work with the same Mac, then the drive is malfunctioning.

I have a 750GB HDD. Speaking visually (looking at Disk Utility) I had a 250GB Mac Journaled partition on the top, and a 500GB Mac Journaled partition on the bottom.
The 250GB partition has been deleted and is now free space.
Now how do I expand the 500GB partition "upwards" when the GUI only gives me a resizing handle on the bottom right corner in Disk Utility?
I am comfortable with Terminal if there is a non-destructive CLI way to do this, since the Disk Utility GUI seems to have failed here...

    OK.
You will need to check out a third-party utility.  The diskutil CLI utility cannot non-destructively change the start of a partition map, only the end (which is why you only get the draggable handle in the GUI at the bottom of each partition...same idea).
To be honest, I'm not even sure how well third-party tools will do at this either.  Changing the start of a partition is non-trivial, be cause of the partition map files, b-trees and so on which have to be moved.  iPartition is well regarded, but also not free.
And regardless of what tool you use, you will want a backup of your data (assuming that it's data you want to keep, or you wouldn't care about non-destructive repartitioning).  Which might mean that just getting a new HDD , copying the data and then repartitioning the current one and having an extra HDD because of it may be the simplest and safest solution anyway...

  • Brand new Mac, had to erase drive through disk utility as time machine back up failed. Now disk utility only has the option to install Mountain Lion which my Mac won't allow. Anyone any ideas as my Mac won't load anything up but disc utility!

Brand new Mac, had to erase drive through disk utility as time machine back up failed on initial setup, USB cable popped out Now can only access disk utility as won't load to log in screen. The only has the option in disc utility is to re-install Mountain Lion which my Mac won't allow or loading another time machine back up but after an hour of it processing, that didn't resolve the issue either! The time machine back up is the latest back up of my Mac Book Pro which was using OS X Maverix. I'm guessing I'm going to have to take my Mac to the store but that would be a hassle so does anyone have any ideas?

Follow this guide using another Mac.
Insert your newly created Mavericks USB into you Mac, press the power button and then hold down 'option,' until it gives you an option to boot from the USB. You will then be able to erase the internal disk with Disk Utility and reinstall Mavericks straight after.
After that you should be able to use Migration Assistant to restore your applications and user data.

  • New internal hard drive not seen in disk utility

    Hi
I replaced my hard drive with a western digital black edition but when I use it as an internal it is not seen by the disk utility.
I have installed and booked from the new drive using USB so it doesn't seem faulty.
When I use the old drive as an internal it works so I don't know what's going wrong.
I have had a look at similar problems but nothing I have tried has helped.

It may be the internal connecting cable that is the problem.  If you can install the new HDD in an enclosure, connect it to the MBP, then see if you recognize it using the OSX installation disk.  If so, the internal connector should be replaced.
    Ciao.

  • My new ssd doesn't show up in Disk Utility please help

    Hi all,
I had a HDD failure in my mbp (2012). It completly crashed. I was able to make a copy of some files through Disk Utility. (Note: at this point i could only enter disk utility after start up not in the actual OS)
    So i bought a Kingston ssdNow v300.
What i did is the following:
Put an clean Mavericks install on a usb drive.
Put the ssd in the MBP
Pressed the option key to boot through the USB and the mbp didn't see the usb.
Booted up through command + R and the computer did see the usb however it did not see the new SSD.
Tried booting up again with command + R and it did see the SSD in the disk utility (after a long load time of recovering the disk data)
Now i knew i had the reformat the ssd in order to install OS X again.
However all the options are greyed out! I can't choose erase/reformat nothing.
Also i rebooted several times and sometimes the mbp didn;t see the ssd anymore... and sometimes it did.
Also if it does see the ssd in the disk utility and i close and re-open disk utility, the ssd in gone!
So sometimes it is recognized and sometimes it isn't.
I am not able to reformat it through an external exclosure or anything.
Also I tried deleting osx mavericks installer on the usb drive and put Os recovery assistant on it. (Which the computer did recognize)
But also this didn't work at all.
I really don't know what to do anymore.
I was hoping to be able to just simply reformat the ssd through disk utility but it doesn't give me this option.
    please help is appreciated!

You need to use external media in FCP if you're going to work with Motion. Or export the clips you need from FCP.

  • New 2011 iMac 27in, CMD-R Using Disk Util Shows Disk 0 and Disk 1.  Normal?

I just bought a new iMac 27in last week(Sept 25, 2011), set everything up and my password for some reason stopped working, so I used CMD-R, selected Disk Util, and noticed something different from my old Mac Mini with Lion, Disk 0 with Macintosh HD and Disk 1 with Master Book Rocovery.  I erased Machintosh HD, then verified and repaired both Machintosh HD and disk 0, Disk 1 was locked.  I returned and selected install Lion Via Wifi, but after I entered my WiFi info and password it asked for a keychain password, I had no idea so pressed enter then asked me to Allow Always, Allow Once, Never.
Is this normal?  And see options for Connect to Server to Finder?  I have no idea what a Server really is, this is for home use with an airport extreme dual band.
I have not setup Time Machine yet until I can buy an external USB drive.  Only connect to the net via WiFi.  Have security set on top setting to block everything incoming, as well as, the other two options.  Should I take it back to apple or is it that new with lion?

Yes, that is normal regarding your hard drive, because when Mac OS X Lion is installed it will partition your hard drive with two partitions one is read only access to make the recovery disk.  The KeyChain is normally the same password as your login.  KeyChain is a program on your iMac that will store you passwords.  The server that is in your finder could be the Apple Server that you connected to for your Lion install.  What is a server?

  • My new USBs are not showing up in Disk Utility

HI ! I just purchased 25 new USBs to upload biz marketing content to. The USBs are not showing up in the FInder (I've checked all the options in the Preferences Pane) nor are they showing in Disk Utility. What am I missing? Or should I just return them?

Let's clarify what you have written:
    1. My usb drives seem to work with other usbs (that have been used on both mac and windows machines before - still works).
What specific USB drives are you refering to?
Are they the 25 in question?
Have you tested the USP ports on your MBP with other USB drives (not the 25) or other peripheral devices to make certain that the ports are functional?
    2. I've had the usb's reformatted on a windows machine and we were able to plug it in to an old mac to see it there.
Are these the 25 USB drives in question?  If so, what was the format?
    3. It is only when I have returned to my office that ONLY these usbs do not work.
These are the 25 USB drives that have been formatted and are seen on the 'old mac' but do not appear on your MBP?  They still do not appear in Disk Utility?
Is this a Mavericks issue? How else would it be visible on older Mac's and not my new Power PC?
It should not be a Mavericks issue
What do you mean by 'new Power PC'?  Are you using a MBP or a Windows machine or is this a typo?  Exactly what MBP model are you using?
    Ciao.

  • Restore on new drive: Time Machine versus "Restore" via Disk Utility

I am about to install a new 240GB OWC Mercury Electra 6G (6Gb/s) SSD into the main drive bay of my MacBook Pro, moving the original Apple-installed 120GB 3G (3Gb/s) SSD into the optical bay using an OWC "Data Doubler."
I have my entire Mac OS X Yosemite install, all apps, and all data (that is, the entire contents of the original SSD) backed up to an external Time Machine backup drive.
I'll want to make the new SSD in the main bay my bootable drive, restoring my original SSD's system to the new SSD. The original SSD will then be erased.
Question is, what are the differences between these two restore strategies:
    1. Restore from Time Machine to the new SSD
    2. "Restore" via Disk Utility, using my original SSD (in the optical bay) as the "Source" and the new SSD (in the main bay) as the "Destination"
Are there any fundamental difference between these two approaches? Such as:
    - Is one faster than the other?
    - Does one involve more or less risk in some settings or such being "lost in translation" and needing to be reset?
    - Would both methods of restore include a recovery partition on the new SSD?
    MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011, Macbook8,3) | 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 | Yosemite 10.10.2

Thanks Kappy - to clarify / confirm: are you saying that the "Restore from Time Machine" approach would *not* include the Recovery HD (and, possibly inferring, that under that approach, getting the Recovery HD would be possible but would require an additional step)?

  • Macbook Pro 2012 HDD not mounting/not showing in disk utility

I opened the macbook to find all apps freezing, nothing would work. So i did a hard shutdown and restarted the machine, and when it booted i just got the flashing folder icon. I re-booted into internet recovery, and went in to Disk Utility and found that the hard drive was not mounting and showing in there. I swapped the hard drive with a spare SSD and it worked fine, so it's not the cable. Also when i boot up, i can hear the hard drive spinning so its not completely dead. I have booted it up as a target disk with the iMac and it still will not appear. There's some photos and other bits that i really want to recover from this drive. Any advice?

Okay, so i have held off going to an Apple store because i wanted to recover the data from the hard drive before repair/replacement. I fitted a 120GB SSD drive which worked fine until today when i opened it up and the same thing occurred. It would seem that it is not the hard drive that had a problem, but perhaps a software issue. I managed to boot up once after the crash and the error report listed a kernel panic as the root of the problem. Here is the full report, which i also got the first time it happened...

Any help or ideas what may have caused this? I can't boot into safe mode, and i cannot mount the drive to repair in disk utility. Is there a way to resolve this myself?

  • Carbon Copy Cloner, Disk Utility, etc..

I just read a post here about cloning the hard drive in a mini to an external, using CarbonCopyCloner. I was curious so I went to version tracker and downloaded. While it was downloading I read some of the reviews for it. Some people posting on Versiontracker seemed to have problems with it. Such as losing all their date. Another user suggested that using Disk Utility would be a better option.
My question is, could I create a partition on my external 160gig drive and then use disk utility to clone my mini hard drive to it? Would I then be able to boot off of that partition? If all that's possible then how would I go about doing that with disk utility? And how would I make sure that both the mini and the copy are both updated with the same data?

    Hi Jerry,
Yes, you can make an identical copy with Carbon Copy Cloner (hence the name ).
You can use dik utility to partition the external drive, then use CCC top clone the Mini's hard drive to one of the partitions. To test the clone, use system preferences to instruct the mini to boot off of the clone. Of course, this will only work with a Firewire drive.
There are preference settings in CCC that allow you to sync the drives. This way they both have the same data.
It also allows you to schedule periodic backups.
Another backup utility that I have used is SuperDuper. Version 2.0 was just released yesterday. Although it is $29.95, you can download and try it for free.
    Hope this helps,
    Steve
